I expected a little more substance. Overall, I'm glad I tried it and can definitely see why people enjoy this restaurant. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

The restaurant was so loud that we spent most of our meal either not talking, or asking what the other had said after trying to talk. Brickhouse I really want to like eating in your restaurant, but I just cannot see a reason to dine there when there are 5 other restaurants that have similar pricing for a significantly better overall experience.

-This review strictly reflects this restaurants knowledge and ability to cater to those with a gluten sensitivity.- Gluten-free menu- There was not a "gluten-free" menu available, but supposedly any meal can be made gluten-free. While a gluten-free menu was unavailable, the server was sure he could cater to the needs of even the most reactive individual. A gluten-free menu, in my opinion, is still a good idea. Service- After notifying the server of my extreme reaction to gluten, he did have to double-check on the soup of the day for both gluten and dairy. I did question the menu on what meats had gluten in them and the meatballs were the only item. It was a typical lunch hour so the restaurant was quite busy for the server to go into further explanation and reassurance. To give a fair review at this point, I would really need to inspect the kitchen and chat with a chef and manager. Knowledge- At the point of ordering my meal, I can't say I had a ton of confidence in the likelihood of 100% gluten-free with no cross-contamination during preparation, as this IS a bread and pasta restaurant. However, upon leaving the pastaria, I was able to speak briefly with the manager (Steve) and he did assure me of their strict procedures with gluten-free meal preparation. He stated they use designated utensils and prepared the gluten-free pasta completely separate from the regular pasta. After mentioning I was a physician and was doing a Gluten-free review on his establishment, he did recommend I email the head of marketing as well as himself for setting up a time to meet. This is always a good sign, as it shows they have nothing to hide. Safety of Food- Although I couldn't be sure if my meal would be prepared 100% gluten-free, based on the type of restaurant I was at, this is a small chain with eight other locations that supposedly implements a system at all of their establishments to assure a safe gluten-free dining experience. All gluten-free dishes are marked with a little toothpick "Italian flag" to avoid confusion by servers when brought to the table. Taste and Cost/Serving Size- The taste of my pasta dish was FANTASTIC, and having taken my office manager Katie to lunch, the cost was very reasonable. I am a bit of a big portion guy though, and would have liked a little more substance to go with my oversized plate. Not having a gluten-free bread option, Katie opted to not eat the regular bread in front of me. As I do follow a very close to Paleo style diet, I very seldom have any form of pasta or bread, but for the growing population of those with gluten sensitivities, a gluten-free bread option would not be a bad idea if it could be implemented safely. Overall Experience- Good. I was invited back by the Manager for an off hours tour of the kitchen. I met the head chef, Jason, who was also very knowledgeable with gluten sensitivity and with allergen avoidance with food preparation. Jason took me through the steps on how they avoid the potential for accidental cross-contamination. The gluten-free pastas are made first thing in the morning in clean pots and then packaged in special "labeled" bags and stored in the fridge until a gluten-free option is ordered. There was even a grill that was strictly for grilling bread. While the deli meat likely had gluten in it, it was in a separate location designated for sandwich preparation and would not be included in any GF meal. All Salads are made GF and croutons are added after salads are made. My only concern was the bread-crumb container which was a little too close to the spinach. This was, however, something they immediately mentioned they would switch. Also, because there was no "Gluten-Free" menu, I did suggest creating one, and Jason even suggested having all of the existing menus having a GF symbol put in front of all of the GF options. The manager mentioned he would get to work on this possibility as soon as possible. I give Pastini Pastaria 4.5 Stars, and would recommend the Bend location for those with a gluten sensitivity. In my educational talk with the manager and head chef, I did emphasis the importance of treating every individual ordering GF as if they could have the worst possible reaction imaginable. read more

If you need your carb/pasta fix, this is the place in Bend to get it. On the riverside (which is lovely in the summer and winter alike - lots of big windows to enjoy the views). The staff were friendly and greeted me right. I opted to belly up to the bar and was immediately offered a drink and menu, by two different people. The second was just making sure someone had taken care of me. The bar is very pretty but not well located inside the restaurant - it's just sort of in the corner with your back to everything and no windows. It's not really a place you'd go for the bar itself in my opinion. I had one of those days where nothing but a heavy creamy pasta dish was going to do so I made a bee line to Pastini Pastoria. While waiting for my meal they offered me bread with oil and vinegar, which was so so but still worth a nibble. The pasta dish I ordered was fettucine alfredo with prawns.... and it totally hit the spot!! perfection! My only complaint is I can't finish it all! Staff was checking in regularly (there was no day time on duty bartender), so my needs felt met. read more

Pastini is a wonderful restaurant with a prime location along the picturesque Deschutes River. The setting allows for a delightful dining experience, especially during sunset. I had the pleasure of trying their carbonara pasta, asparagus, and a single meatball. The flavors were authentic and lived up to the expectations of a quality Italian eatery. Despite some recent poor reviews, my dining experience was fantastic. I'm unsure why others had negative experiences, as everything we had was delicious. The only slight downside was the server being a bit reserved, but she promptly attended to our requests and made our meal enjoyable. Overall, Pastini is a quality eatery that deserves more recognition for its excellent food. I would gladly return for another delightful meal and recommend it to others seeking an authentic Italian dining experience with a beautiful riverside ambiance. read more

such a poor decision to go to Pastini in Bend Oregon for dinner 6/24/23. Waitress was great, the meal however not fit for even the manager. Manager comped our ticket and that was nice, but have her admit that when she brought us my meal it "didn't look good to eat". She was right! Wrong type of noodles used, gummy, over cooked, the sauce was a ragu that used tough meat and clumps of veins in it! Manager admitted to trying different kind of noodle and yes she admitted to trying different place for meat. Isn't Pastini chain restaurant? Aren't they suppose to buy and follow the chain recipes and not try to cut cost, which she admitted to. Sorry Bend won't be eating here again and you perhaps to go someplace else. read more

We love Pastini in Portland, and we usually eat at their Bend location when visiting...it has the best riverside patio! We shared risotto cakes and their great Caesar salad, and also shared the pasta bolognese, which is very authentic, and loaded with tender meat, just wonderful. Also had a terrific Rufina Chianti for under $8 a glass, a super deal. Finished with tiramisu and left so happy. Yum. read more

They can add pepperoni to a cheese pizza for the particular children in your life. My husband and I shared a Cobb salad, no croutons to make it gf (the lemon dill dressing was AMAZING! Actually, this whole salad was very good). We also intended to share the NY strip with chimichurri. However, we didn't read that it comes with bread and a side salad (great!) and roasted vegetables in romesco sauce (also great!). My husband is allergic to nuts and so he couldn't eat any. That is not a complaint...all on us! The menu is clearly marked. But be aware if you have a nut allergy to specify that you can't have the romesco sauce. Or let the order taker know, as they are informed on modifications and whatnot. So he ate the salad and done pizza. I ate most of the steak and veggies. Everything tasted really good. The steak was a bit gristly. But the chimichurri was great. My absolute favorite thing was the elote cake with tajin buttercream. It was not a sweet cake. But it was heavenly. I should have grabbed another piece before we left. It was creative and salty and delicious and I still want it two days later. Service was great. Food is brought out as it's ready, not all at once. And the side salad and bread is brought before the main dish. The people were friendly and helpful. This was a great place and I would definitely go back.

Easy for a group or solo diner…read more Good menu but we were fortunate to be there on an evening when they were serving prime rib which is exactly what we wanted. Enter through the breezeway into bar, then pass through to dining room. Warmed with ice cream marrionberry cobbler was just the best! Definitely would return. A wonderful change from so many copy cat places trying to be modern these days. An absolute treat.
