Bad news. Good news. Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake. read more

Very nice place we were trying to do something out of the norm because this was our first year visiting Ben without kids. They had a nice happy hour and very good drinks on it. They were simple and well-made and relatively strong. Very cute little location seating wasn't an issue, even though we didn't make reservation reservations ahead of time Just overall a very solid little spot, we got some sliders and some other little sides and everything was put together well and price right. Came to this spot for brunch on a Saturday because there was a 1.5hour wait at Lemon Tree. Our group of 4 was seated right away and offered menus. The options were a little limited, but the waiter was very attentive. Nice touches included outdoor umbrellas and free house made popcorn while you wait for food, but their kitchen was seriously overrun. Took almost 30min to get our food, which was good but nothing to write home about. I expected more for an $18 for an avocado French toast, but I guess that's what brunch prices are these days. Basic breakfast had larger portion, but again nothing spectacular. Wouldn't be my first choice next time. read more

Great food and a fun way to celebrate a birthday! The decor is very comforting with a classy vibe that is very welcoming, with big booths and big mirrors. We had included the birthday in our group on our reservation so the staff had included a birthday sign at our table when we sat down. Seated right away, wait staff was friendly and informative. Four in our group, order peach burrata, BLTAs for both couples to share. Peach burrata was amazing. Bend, OR Downtown Bend. Come here for happy hour. The artichoke dip is ok but the chips are delicious! The wings have a honey glazed coating on the skin. You get three wings for happy hour and cost is $10. Draft is cold and refreshing. Margarita is good but way too much ice. Bartender is cheerful and friendly. They give you a small bag of popcorn when you sit down that is seasoned. Fun treat. I give this place 4.2 stars. They lost stars because you can see the kitchen prepare the food. And, the cook put chips on my plate without gloves. Later I see him wipe his nose with his sleeve. Yuck! read more

I visited Drake Downtown while in Bend and had a pleasant experience. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and our server was wonderful.. The highlight of the meal was the bang bang shrimp appetizer. It was crispy, flavorful, and definitely something I would come back for. The rest of the meal was good, just not quite as memorable. It is on the more expensive side, but the service and ambiance make it worth a visit, especially if you are in the mood for a relaxing night out. read more

I'd come back to Bend just to eat here. The chef and his brigade were on point and every dish they sent out was better than the last. We had the fried chicken and the burger as entrees and the the shrimp and crab toast as starters. All delicious. Cocktails were great too. Mason was our server and he was very attentive. This is one of the first places I've eaten since migrating from VA to OR. It was described to us by a local business as an "upscale" dive bar. We walked in around 1600 on a Friday without a reservation. They seated us with no problem. The gal greeting us, lighting the table candle was just a delight. The gentleman who seated us (can't remember his name) was very pleasant. We had the fried shrimp, the artichoke dip (which was strangely mixed with sour cream which the DH doesn't like) and I got a burger with a side salad instead of fries. The salad didn't look like much, but it was amazing. The burger I should have ordered Medium, the medium well was a little too done. The drinks were good. I didn't think the bill was outrageous being everything in Bend seems overpriced. I'd go here again and heartily recommend. read more

First bite taste the crunch, char-grilled patty, and seared beef juices squish out. Yum! Comes with side of hand cut fries or mixed greens little gem salad or soup of the day. So let's preface this review with the fact that we came here several times, but this time is Christmas Eve. -- Let's start out with the good notes first. They were super backed up and the service was pretty good. We had a super nice server who was obviously overwhelmed with the amount of people, but he did great for the cards that he was handed. The food was decent for me . I had the shrimp and grits and I had smoked trout as an appetizer ..didn't enjoy it with the chips so I decided to add it to my shrimp and grits and it was a wonderful compliment. The fried chicken was the letdown today and it was our go to usually . Not only did we wait about an hour for the food, everyone next to us, got their food first even though we ordered our food first.... -- and the fried chicken is burnt so it has that burnt taste to it that throws off the flavor. Let me note that it is usually good . This particular visit was not 4 stars worthy, but I have been here on multiple other occasions and I guess I forgot to review it. It is usually a four star dine. As you can tell, I've been here multiple times, so I'll let you know if I would come back . Final rating for tonight that would be a 6.5 out of 10. read more

We popped in without a reservation and the kind ladies at the front said we were good to go if we could be done before all the evening reservations came in. We only wanted a drink and an app so it worked out perfectly. We tried the trout dip which we've never had anywhere before and it was delicious. I went with a Paloma and my husband had an old fashion and the drinks were awesome. We'll definitely be back to have dinner sometime. read more

We were in downtown Bend leaving Sunriver for the week, on a Saturday morning. Our favorite breakfast place was too busy to accommodate our party of six, so we searched around for a new place. We came across Drake Downtown Bend, and they were able to seat us immediately. The menu looked great and it was on the way out of town, which worked for our schedule. We sat down and didn't have to wait too long for our enthusiastic waiter, Martin, came to bring us waters. He is the best thing about this restaurant. He was fun to talk to and super helpful for deciding menu items. After 5-10 minutes, he brought us our drinks, and took our food order. After that, we didn't get any food for around 45 minutes. Once the food came, we were all quite hungry. I started eating and immediately discovered that, of all the steak I've had in my life, I have discovered the worst steak. It came out cooked exactly how I wanted it to, but the flavor was incredibly lacking. It was unseasoned, and it was cold. The best way I could describe the flavor would be saying it tasted something like charcoal. I then moved to the eggs, which, to my surprise, were also unseasoned. No salt or pepper were present on the eggs. The potatoes were also not made very well. I still ate the whole meal, as I am not one for wasting food, but I was incredibly disappointed. This all being said, I did taste the meals of some others I was with, and found that my case could have been a one-off. Everyone else's food tasted great! The Drake Burger and French Toast were highlights for sure. I would say, if you're looking to get breakfast at Drake Downtown Bend, don't get the steak and eggs. read more

We're on vacation in Oregon and stopped by Drake for lunch. I had the burtata and peach salad with arugula and cherry tomatoes topped with a balsamic reduction (just wow!) My husband had the charred wedge salad with blue cheese chunks and dressing including bacon tomatoes and red onions (another wow!) The restaurant is was not clean, the food was not kept properly and it made me sick. I made a complaint to the bartender and they shares that their working conditions were tough. Their bar was full of mold and the owner (Ted) refused to pay a cleaning company or shut it down for cleaning. I got sick twice, yeah, silly me gave them a second chance. The second time, I got severely ill, ended up with food poisoning. I made a complaint to the health department and they thought it was a chef that just had quit. They went of to trying to ruin the chefs reputation and spread false rumors about him, poor thing. He didn't do it, yet they went on a vengeful strike and tried to have him lose other options for employment. In addition, they bad mouthed him on future catering projects, this was Bridget. I'm not sure what position she held but she was a horrid person. After the complaints to the health department, they sold it. Ted owns other restaurants, the Washington and mountain burger, I don't recommend any of his restaurants. If he is this kind of person imagine the energy that is in those spaces. Drove in from Sisters with 2 hungry kids for a 6pm rezo. Got seated immediately, kids got their crayons, and the table was served tasty popcorn while we looked at menu. Ordered a ton of food.. highlights were charred wedge salad, shrimp & grits, hamachi crudo and ricotta donut dessert (thankfully recommended by our server). I have been here 3 times now and they have all three been during happy hour (on purpose). They have an excellent happy hour with discounts on beer and cocktails and a limited food menu. Their spinach artichoke dip was amazing all three times, but this last time half of the chips were stale. Our Caesar salad came out missing ingredients and we were going to let the staff know, but no one ever asked. It was hard to interject a complaint amongst their own conversations. (We're not very outgoing people to start). We did get to let them know upon receiving the check. The salad was taken off the bill, but it didn't increase the overall morale. Their service during happy hour will result in quick seating because not many other guests are there. Your service after being seated is borderline nonexistent. It does feel like all they care about is the dinner rush afterward. You won't be acknowledged very much. You'll always be waiting on a drink refill and don't expect them to ask if your meal came out okay. Our bartender had an alcohol tasting right in front of us, all the while our own drinks were empty, but he got to taste 4 different ones. The food here is phenomenal. I'd hate to say I'd never come back, but the disappointment weighs a lot into my decision. There are SO many good restaurants in Bend, so why waste your money here ? Maybe dinner is a better time to go? The atmosphere is always chill, maybe too chill? Hard to say. I always love seeing employees get along and laugh with one another, but the people paying them should also get attention here and there. I noticed that drake had reservations and there were plenty available! Win for Drake! The host and server were both professional, attentive and friendly. I noticed other tables had popcorn but didn't see it on the menu. When I asked, before our food arrived, they brought us some. I got a mimosa and the Caesar salad. Hubs got the veggie scramble and potatoes. Everything was pretty basic. The potatoes were good. To be fair, though, I think we could have ordered more specialty meals like the fried chicken or shrimp and grits, but after a week of indulging. We were ready for light.
