We are headed to velvet after having dinner a few blocks away. As you walk into the entrance, it gives you a very pleasant feel and reminds you of the old school snow cabins that you would see out in the mountains. The lighting and the colors helped to give a very laid-back atmosphere. It's a very small setting with upstairs and downstairs seating, we went on a Tuesday night and there is plenty of room for us (party of five). Most of the group ordered Old-fashions and I just wanted something a little bit more refreshing at the time so I ordered a Mojito. The drinks were great, and the bartender worked well with us. I've loved Velvet for years, at least the idea and aesthetic of it. Really well curated interior with a great ambiance. The owner is the only person I've felt good vibes from. The rest of the team, especially recently, have unfortunately always had frankly unwelcoming, bored, avoidant, unenthusiastic, dead expression attitudes no matter the time or stress level. I've even been in when zero customers were in the entire building and based on the sole interactions with the bar, or lack thereof, the magic gets leached away from the place. Without the bartenders, it's just an empty building after all. A welcoming attitude or some conversation is the warm hearth that brings cold travelers back over and over again; people remember how they feel. Then again, even when the place is packed with people, I don't feel any warmth or connection from anyone here. Maybe it's a sign of the times, maybe it's Bend in general. I'll keep trying and coming back nonetheless. read more

The only downside is it's a bit small so seating is scarce but not a dealbreaker. Small, somewhat tight spot downtown with a very chill ambiance. - Two levels with a bar in each. The upper level is slightly bigger (the space as well as the bar). The lower level seems like an overflow - the bar sometimes isn't even attended. Which is not a problem - you just go upstairs to get a drink. - Seating is eclectic, very much a lounge atmosphere, particularly upstairs where there are cushioned long seats. - Velvet has a full bar and offers specialty drinks along with the usual libations. Small beer tap list. - They have a limited menu although what they have is generally good. It changes, of course. This week they only had Jackaroo Aussie pies (apparently Velvet bought up the remaining inventory from Jackaroo, which is going out of business). Regular menu to resume after those are gone. - Fairly low-key music, although that might not always be the case, I don't know. - With the small space, it can get extremely crowded and in these days of covid, I won't go there during busy times. The servers can get overwhelmed with a packed house too. - With the small, probably crowded narrow space, and with the upstairs being the better level, I can't recommend Velvet for the mobility-challenged. This is a hidden gem, it's small but has an eclectic, speakeasy sort of feel to it. They had interesting drinks, we tried the Blueberry Velvet which was refreshing, not too sweet and had Oregon blueberries in it. They had appetizers and sandwiches as well. One of the nicest bars in downtown Bend with amazing specialty cocktails. I would recommend going earlier because it gets super crowded in here. There is an upstairs and downstairs bar to order at and the inside has the best aesthetic. There are cool mirrors everywhere, wooden furniture, walls and floors, tons of plants, lamps and mood lighting. My all time favorite cocktail is the blue velvet which has vodka, Yerba matte, and blueberries. A lot of the cocktails almost taste like health elixirs with all of the unique and natural ingredients! Hooooly cow, these drinks pack a punch! Our bartender pointed out the happy hour menu around and we went with the Blue Velvet. Sheesh! The vodka soaked blueberries were no joke, if you pick them out of your drink & pop a few in your mouth, it's like getting 2 drinks in one. Our bartender was friendly and attentive. We got a little tipsier than we had intended, curtesy of the "dangerberries" as we teasingly called them. All in all, it was a lovely experience in a super cute spot! We meandered around downtown then made our way back to Velvet later in the night. Our second visit was a bit shocking as our cozy cove had turned into a total rager- bouncer & all. Super cool atmosphere and vibe. Bartender was super nice and poured excellent cocktails. The crowd was 30's-40's and 50's. Not many college kids when we were there. Although they did not have stuffed olives for my dirty martini, the drink held up well. They have a couple seats outside which is nice for people watching. Inside is kind of small and there was no bar service downstairs or any servers. You have to trek upstairs for each drink. For a late evening nightcap, I'd definitely return. read more

Stopped into Velvet for a drink before dinner. There seems to be two bars inside, one upstairs and one downstairs. The vibe is upscale Bend and at the same time cozy. The bartenders were professional and friendly. The night we were there, there was a problem with the cash register. The guys handled it smoothly and continued to make drinks to keep the line moving. Great place to check out on a bar hopping night and a very stark contrast to the otherwise quite street late in the night. The crowd was mostly 20 something and the spot seemed very popular as both the floors were overflowing with people. We were lucky enough to find a good spot on the couch upstairs.
