We were staying the night at McMenamins in Bend while traveling from California to Washington, and one of the highlights of our stay was hunting down the speakeasy bar, The Broom Closet. Half the fun is searching the property for it--and don't worry, I won't spoil where we found it! Once inside, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The space is cozy and intimate, with comfortable places to sit and a full bar that feels tucked away from the rest of the property. It was especially festive during the holidays, with Christmas drink specials adding to the charm. I ordered the NA Merry Cherry, which was gingery, slightly spicy, and super refreshing--a great non-alcoholic option. My wife had The Countess and said it was absolutely delicious. Between the atmosphere, the drinks, and the fun of discovering it, The Broom Closet was a total win. Such a cool little addition to the Old Saint Francis hotel. We were staying at the hotel and encouraged to explore and go find the Broom Closet. Once we did find it, we enjoyed a cocktail and sitting in a quiet nook. It's definitely not a large space or a loud space, but something more to be savored and enjoyed. The bartender was extremely kind and engaging. Even if you aren't staying at the hotel, I would highly recommend coming to check this place out. read more

What a unique experience....I debated about writing a review about the "Broom Closet" as it supposed to be a speakeasy......And with any good speakeasy the challenge is to find it....so I will just lay out some breadcrumbs to set you up to finding this unique experience in Bend, Oregon. This secret spot is located at St. Francis School, well ex St. Francis School. This is one of the McMenamins locations, and if you know anything about the McMenamins locations, they are each unique....So once you find this place its good to explore the property.....once on the property search out the broom closet.....when you give up, ask an employee or two for some clues..... Once you find the broom closet, you will find a small room with a bar. On the weeknights expect this place to be packed! There is only a limited number of seats. And some seats require you to climb over your fellow guest, so make friends with your fellow guest! The chosen spot is right when you enter to the right, there is a small booth fit for two. A great booth to enjoy the activities at the bar or read some "well wishes in the ceiling." The broom closet is just a bar. The bar menu has some unique drinks to explore. Or you can go off the menu! The bar staff are hard workers- super busy filling everybody's wishes! Thanks for your hard work in a tight space! Its worth visiting at least once.....or if you are local, a good place to take your guest. If too busy, there are plenty of other bars on the property to explore.....or perhaps another drink afterwards......and if you have too many drinks, you can also catch a wink at the hotel on property. I've been to several speakeasies in several cities and this is by far my favorite speakeasy I've ever been to. Loved the ambiance and the creative entryway. Finding the entrance is part of the fun. I looked through other reviews on Yelp to prepare for my visit and was able to find my way without any trouble. I probably would've struggled otherwise. We stopped by shortly after opening on a Saturday and had no problem grabbing a booth. The McMenamins Blackberry Cider was to die for. How cool is this really neat SECRET spot at St. Francis School?! It took us a minute to figure out how to enter but it's such a cool spot when you get in. It was FAR bigger than some of the other "small" bars I've been to at Edgefield, Kennedy and Anderson School but it's typical McMenamins. Quirky decor, and art with lots of concert posters. I like how bright and open it felt even though it was a "closet." I'd die for a closet that big. We didn't drink but they had some great options. The bartender however didn't seem like he wanted to be there. In fact he seemed downright mad to have to work. Glad we just got stamped and moved on!! read more

There's no denying the Broom Closet is a fun place be, and find, but part of it's allure is also its weakness - the place is incredibly small. During Bend's tourist seasons, it's really not somewhere I would suggest. I'm reminded of a recent chat with the bartender in one of McMenamins' other bars. After agreeing that Bend was 'between tourists' at the moment, he said it's like "Yay! We can go to Smith Rock"! Same with the Broom Closet. read more

First, you'll need to locate the venue, which may be a challenge, but once you do, you'll be rewarded with an eclectic and funky atmosphere that will instantly put you in a good mood. It feels like Speak Easy ! If nobody told you this secret speakeasy was here, you'd probably never find it on your own. I kinda wish the front desk staff didn't inform guests of its existence, nor the McMenamins Passports mention it, either, because the excitement of discovering the Broom Closet is a huge part of its appeal! Located on the third floor of the detached Art House building, where the majority of guest rooms are located, the sign bearing the name "Broom Closet" camouflages the true nature of the bar beyond with its utilitarian plaque and font: it looks like the door to a janitor's closet. Open the door, and you find yourself in a narrow, claustrophobic passage, with an ice machine at the end, and the right wall adorned with antique-looking brooms (purely decorative). Push on the correct one, and the wall swings inward, revealing the hidden lair of lubricating libations beyond! The roar of conversation within was completely suppressed by the secret passage, erupting in a startling level of volume as soon as the hidden door was opened. On our Saturday night visit, the place was packed, with only a single booth available for us to snag a seat. We enjoyed a couple cocktails in the narrow attic space, absorbed the ambiance, grabbed our passport stamps, and vacated our table to allow the constant flow of patrons to turn over and experience the place in manner it deserves. I would return several times that night to grab another cocktail and return to our room on the first floor, as the combination of coolness and convenience made the Broom Closet my favorite bar at the Old St. Francis School, and perhaps all of the McMenamins properties. read more

This is probably the coolest speakeasy I have ever been to (and I've been to a lot of speakeasy's!) It is a little difficult to find but honestly that was half the fun. Very small inside so many of the folks we saw coming in didn't have a place to sit, but it's worth sticking around until a space opens up. The banana old fashion was phenomenal. Love the Harry Potter vibe instead. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Bend as a MUST DO on your list. read more

The quest to find the broom closet and the other secret rooms at McMenamins was a family affair. My 10year old had so much fun. However, the reception we got from the bartender upon opening the door was disappointing. A weak smile was all we got :( . She made up for it after we sat ourselves and ordered a couple of drinks. I do understand how exasperating it must be to have people come in, hang around a little and just turn around. Drink wise, the Smokin Paloma was the bomb! Trust me, when you go the smokin way, there's no going back to regular Paloma. It's smoky, spicy, tangy, sweet and refreshing. The hubby enjoyed his beer as well. After ending up in multiple employee only areas that we truly weren't supposed to be in, we found it. Great cocktails, cozy vibes. What a sweet, secret find! This bar is pretty damn cool. If you find the room marked Broom Closet you are just like Bon Jovi, halfway there . Keep investigating and you will be rewarded with a cozy joint filled with sweet libations. Enjoyed a few Irish Whiskeys and Scotches from, well, Scotland. The smell, the taste, the warmth. This is the newest of the McMenamin's in Bend. It is hidden in one of the new buildings and is a nice wood paneled space with views out its small top floor windows. BTW when I say hidden it is, just like the secret rooms in the new buildings. There are no big McMenamins signs outside just a nondescript door with Broom Closet on it, like a housekeeping door. Peek inside and its a room with lots of different brooms on the wall.... Everyone who finds the bar comments its just like Harry Potter...it actually is though....exept no butter beer. The bar is one of the nicest in the chain, small cozy and comfortable. Great service, the only downside is trying to find a seat. For a bar that went out of its way to be hidden its alway packed. It has the usual Mcmenamins drink line up. I haven't tried food but even if they offer any, the kitchen is far away... Finally it has limited hours so check them out before you leave, really you don't want to miss this place! read more

I want to give this place a 5 Star review but the bar tender was not friendly and had a piss poor attitude. The local is one of a kind. Never been to a secret bar like this. Amazing. Well done. Rustic. But damn... this mustache man was just not Enjoying my presence or something. I do love this cute this 'hidden' bar but it's always warm up there. (3rd floor, 1 window, and usually full of people) so staying for a drink isn't always as fun. Plus it's always full- only about 7 tables to sit at. But the wandering walk there is fun and I just order a beer there and then wander back to the O'kanes fire pits. It's definitely a spot I've shown my friends and visitors tho! read more
