So, I haven't found broasted chicken in years, finally found this place that has it. OMG can't say enough food things about this place. The chicken and potatoes were out of this world. Chicken chicken was golden crisp and juicy. Russet potatoe slices were soooo light and fluffy. Nothing was salty either. The bartenders are very friendly and inviting--you can tell they've been here a very long time. Recently moved to Bend and have been hitting up different neighborhood/regular bars (no $14 shots or $20 burgers for this guy). M & J had been at the top of my list for the last few months, so I finally gave it a chance this past weekend. Overall, the place had a cool vibe and definitely had the look of a "dive" bar, hole in the wall, local bar.. whatever we call it these days (I grew up in a small Alaskan island so to me it's just a "bar".. thats all we had). The issue with this place was it seemed more like it was disguising itself as an every day bar but was really more geared towards the tourist and specialty crowd. Shots were expensive, pours were small, and the overall atmosphere was lacking. I know people will say "Bend is just expensive, that's how it is" but I've found that to be untrue. There are legitimate locals bars in this town that have a great ambiance, solid pours, and reasonable prices.. they just aren't going to be right downtown (go figure, no locals bars where all the tourists go). That being said, I've found multiple other places that I'll frequent as a local, but if we have friends in town and have had a few drinks I wouldn't be opposed to stumbling upon M & J again. read more

I've been in here a couple times and it's always a blast. Service is good and bar tenders are awesome. I went in before a concert across the street and naturally the bar was slammed. They worked hard to keep up, but I feel like they need a server well or something to help guests and the staff to keep up with the demand and taking people in the order they show up. This place is amazing! So many tequilas (over 200)!! So friendly and attentive service. They tequila flights which you can pick whatever tequila you want in your flight! CJ and Mike are freaking fantastic!! Super personable and knowledgeable about the tequila and whiskey they have! They make you feel right at home from the minute you sit down until you leave. Fantastic "dive bar" best i have been in for years. Had been in Bend for some micro brews and had enjoyed Porters The Cellar..but everything seemed to close at 9 pm...yeah even on a Friday..so walked up to try get Silver Moon and they had closed early too. This place was within 100 yards. Its always intimidating to enter a locals type place but as soon as i walked in and found a seat at the bar..all those fears were =gone. Great hard working and friendly bar staff. Good micro brews on tap and the locals were fantastic. As the night wore on the place got packed but i met a few tequila fans and this is a tequila bar..the tequilas i tried on recommendation blew my mind. Lucky my hotel was within walking distance. This was our last stop at the end of a long weekend in Bend. We were visiting friends and were fortunate to be able to see lots of the town. This was the perfect place to end our visit on a high note, and was a great representation of how we felt about the town as a whole: very friendly and warm and welcoming. We parked on the street not far away and a food truck parked nearby. (There are so many mobile food vendors in Bend!! It's amazing!) We walked into the bar and heard the awesome band playing their bluegrass songs. I ordered a couple pints of beer for my husband and I, and was happy to get ID'ed. (It was only a couple weeks ago in Monterey, CA that the bartender didn't bother to ID me but did make sure to get ID's from the girls next to me. Ouch!) Our group of 6 found a table next to a phone booth that we all agreed took up valuable real estate in the place without adding much. We were squished into the little corner but it was still nice to finally sit down off our feet. People were playing pool at the table next to us, and in the back there was video lottery and some arcade games. The staff was very friendly and the drinks were cheap. Will definitely stop here again next time we visit Bend, and would probably make this a regular meet-up if we lived up there. read more

My favorite bar in Bend, not for fancy cocktails with obscure ingredients (which I also enjoy), but for the fine ambiance and fine company. C.J., Lara, and Mike are the height of elegance with efficient service, quick come backs, and complete discretion with my secrets. Friday evenings bring the privilege of a rounding out the workweek by tossing peanut shells on the floor and Saturday evenings are typically too loud to chat but are great for getting into different types of music. The ladies bathroom was one of the M&J's crowning features because it was resplendent with sweet graffiti--one lovely message was even my profile photo in my brief foray into online dating--so my only complaint is that they painted over it with brown and then greased the walls a few years back. My friend & I visiting Bend were super excited about the craft brew scene. Unfortunately we were disappointed on Sunday that many things closed 8-9pm. We came across M & J Tavern when the doors were locked at a near by brewery a block away. The Tavern door was open and welcoming! We entered to a cozy and fun bar, decorated with lots of John Wayne, Oregon Ducks, and Halloween fun! There were pool tables (Sunday is free pool day; WINNING!), and a person favorite Buck Hunter. The crowd was warm and welcoming of locals! The bar was filled with liquor of all sorts and taps from local breweries! The bar tender Shanna (sorry if that is spelt wrong) was amazing! While visiting my Mom in both the dalles and bend (she lives both places due to having to move for work), she took me into several bars. All verrrrry divey. Not the cute kind of divey I am used to in SF or Portland but, middle of nowhere Oregon divey. This place gets 4 stars because I wasn't scared shitless and the bartender was nice. There were some patrons under the age of 55 and the drinks were still cheap. They are next door to Old Towne Pizza which is why we were there and you can tell Old Towne to bring the pizza over when it is done. I would go back for a beer if in this situation again. read more

Stopped in here for a beverage with the sweetheart and a friend. It is located next to a laundromat and even has a glass double door connecting the bar to the laundromat. It was a quiet afternoon but it is roomy enough. They regularly have music shows going on. The people present were there for pool and football. Judging from the decor, it would be safe to say that they like the Ducks. At the end of the bar on the side closer to the door is a small room with a gate revealing shelves of liquor through the bars. The stools at the bar was reminiscent of a soda fountain which got us wondering how old the place was and what it used to be. We learned from the bartender that M&J Tavern has always been a tavern since the 1940's and the back room where the video lotto machines were used to be where the owner lived before they knocked down that wall and opened it up. There's even a bloody murder and a ghost in this tavern's background. It's a great place to go with friends to watch the game and it looks like it would be a cool place to watch some shows. Just another divey bar. Pool and darts I think as well as electronic lottery games. Beer on tap and decent poured drinks. They specialize in tequila which you wouldn't guess from the name or the decor. They have A LOT of bottles (most with dust on them) and offer tequila flights. Bend's best hole-in-the-wall tequila bar. Tequila bar? Yes, you read that right. It's not billed as such but they have an insane collection of the agave nectar. Yum. If you're a tequila hound stuck in Central Oregon, head to the M&J, stat. Eat before you go. Their bar food is basically on the same level as the hot food at your neighborhood grocery or convenience store, but who cares when you can sip on Chinaco, Partida, or 123 Organic (all 3 avail. in plato, reposado or anejo)? Yes, it's weird that there's basically a laundromat on premises and sometimes the pool tables attract interesting characters who may not have the best hygiene but again: tequila tequila tequila. One tip: I'm totally a fan of day drinking but do that elsewhere. The daytime bartenders here are painfully stingy with their pours. Belly up to the bar after 6 and make friends with the the guy who looks like a cross between Hemingway & Santa Claus - he's kind and funny and will make you feel right at home & you'll forget all about the washers & dryers 20 feet behind you. read more

CJ is the best bartender I've ever had! She knows what to make based off of what you like, and the two "surprise drinks" she has made me have been amazing!
