Belgium and Beer go together like Germany and Beer or Milwaukee and Beer or Japan and Beer or St. Louis and Beer or Holland and Beer (not that Tom Holland Bero crap). I guess a lot of places do beer right! I was staying at the Springhill Suites a few doors down and this place was a welcome delight. I was able to snag a table, have a delicious beer flight, and a wonderful pork schnitzel dish. My spatzel was cold so I asked for some fresh and it was much better. Boiled perfectly and then pan fried in butter or something. Nice texture. The place is kinda nice too. It had a spacious interior and a wonderful outside space where a lot of patrons were happy drinking and dining. And that custom table!!! I wish I was here in Bend longer as I would have liked to return and try more of those delicious beers. I tried Monkless Brewery for the 1st time today, although I've lived in Bend since 2005. Some friends told me they had a good menu, & I liked the idea of the views of the Deschutes & Old Mill. The ambiance is very nice, & comfortable. My service was friendly, the pinot gris was tasty & refreshing- but the cauliflower crust "pizza" type item (can't remember name), was very disappointing for an item with such potential with specific ingredients of mushrooms, roasted garlic, asparagus, goat cheese, & balsamic glaze. Started off ok with flavors, but the OVERWHELMING ! amount of balsamic glaze & UNDERWHELMING! amount of mushrooms, plus SEVERAL !!!!! mouthfuls of tough, woody asparagus pieces that I had to literally remove from my mouth. Plus not one single beautiful & tender asparagus tip for both taste & presentation. Overall underwhelming. read more

I hadn't been here in a while but another solid performance from Monkless. The beers and ales are always amazing. As is the view from the deck. We stopped in the night before a concert at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. It was crowded but not crazy crowded. They managed it well. It was hot out so we picked lighter food. The orzo, corn summer salad was *really* good, perfect for a hot day and nice with the sausage add-on (note: while the temp the sausage came at would be fine on a sausage platter app, it was a bit too lukewarm for an entree imho). The meatball smash (ok, not that light) was very good as was the beet salad with steak on it. Great value, solid service from the reception to the waiter during the meal. read more

The ambiance of the place was nice right on the old mill. The service was ok could have done better. Never once did they refill water for me and the kids. Our waiter kept walking back and forth to see our glass empty and not once bothered to refill. So I had to drink water out of my own water bottle. The sausage board was great. But was disappointed with the salmon entree. For the price we paid. The salmon was a small piece but overloaded us with potatoes. Not worth the price paying for. read more

The servers here were so friendly and sweet, they recommended us a nice point butte hike for the sunset after. We snagged a couple nice beer glasses and a shirt from their merch too. The ales were excellent, inexpensive, our favorites were the stouts and the saison. The pretzel is warm, fresh and large, but we got sticker shock later when we saw it was almost $20. I did not choose to come to this restaurant. I am gluten-free and they only have a few options I wasn't really interested in. But the hostess was so nice and welcoming and my waiter was friendly and even the social media person helped me a lot when I was panicking about having to attend an event here. I chose to get the sausage platter because someone else at my table wanted to share it. One sausage was good, one was fine, and one we did not like. I am giving 4 stars because I don't want to bring the star rating down because of all this. They really tried to help me make the best of an awkward situation. This brewery near downtown Bend is a great spot to sit down and catch up with friends. They offer indoor as well as outdoor seating with heat lamps that they turn on as it gets cooler out. The menu offers a variety of drinks including a whole list of Belgian based Ales of which I tried a couple which both tasted great, very strong yet smooth flavors. I also tried the poutine which was phenomenal with great flavor and real crisp fries. The server was awesome, he was training another server on the job but still made sure to check in on us frequently enough and was knowledgeable on the menu. On our visit to Bend the craving for schnitzel was so strong that we chose Monkless for the signature pork schnitzel only to discover that it was out of stock. How do you run out of your signature dish? We were forced to pivot to french dip sandwiches and braised short ribs. Tragic. The short ribs were pretty tender and filling, enjoyed the soft carrots, the mashed potatoes didn't really hold up just kind of turned into mush slop. The french dip was decent but a little bland. Just ok. The flight was good but only one of the beers was European and the one we liked the most there was the least of. The "flight" is pour your own which is a little strange normally flights come poured. A decent experience but not a great one. Lunch Review - Monkless Belgian Ales - Bend, Oregon This review is based on numerous weekday lunch experiences at Monkless Belgian Ales, ranging from lunch for two to lunch for twenty. The most recent was a lunch for two on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The dining experience at Monkless is extremely consistent. The restaurant is seldom more than half full for weekday lunches. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, each very comfortable, with one of the most pleasant patios in the Old Mill District. The restaurant is always clean and well maintained. The staff is consistently friendly and professional. Seating is usually prompt, followed by beverage requests, meal ordering, food service, and checkout. All of this happens at a nice pace, neither slow nor rushed. There is always at least one mid-meal check-in to ensure everything is going well. When I have hosted larger group lunches, the staff has managed these very well. During summer they do not accept reservations, but you can call ahead and give them notice. When I have done this, they have been prepared and ready for the larger group. The food at Monkless is good to very good. I am never disappointed, but I also never leave thinking, "Wow, that was incredible." Their menu is what I would refer to as gastropub. It also changes over time. But their Belgo burger tends to be a staple and popular fall back. Aligned with their Belgian theme, mussels are also a regular feature on their menu. I should note that I do not drink, though Monkless offers a very good selection of Belgian-inspired craft beers. Friends and colleagues I've dined with have commented on how much they enjoy them. Their prices are in-line with many similar lunch offerings in Bend. Many of their entrees come in around the $20 mark with some scaling to the $30 mark. With tip, our lunch for two came in at $48.75. If you are in the Old Mill District and need a timely meal with quality food, polite professional service, and a comfortable space, Monkless Belgian Ales is a very solid option. read more

Went for lunch today with a local friend who specifically chose Monkless as our meeting place. Great food again, just like the last few times we visited here. It's one of our go to spots when we visit Bend. We ordered the poutine and it was so fantastic. The flavors of the meat, gravy and potatoes and cheese---and then topped with an egg was splendid. Wow. Hubby ordered a French dip sandwich which was also flavorful, especially the beef, the bun and au jus! I ordered a delicata squash soup and it was packed with a squash flavor. It was very rich and I think I would have preferred it to be more soupier instead of a mashed potato-like , thick consistency. But it was a healthy meal. Service was nice from Alex. We had a truly amazing time at Monkless in Bend, Oregon. The Belgian ales here are beyond delicious. And the food was made with meticulous care that isn't often a thing at good breweries that nonetheless produce their food as an afterthought. Not the case at Monkless, though. The salads are delicious. My wife love the salmon. And I so enjoyed the cauliflower crust pizza. But what really made Monkless exceptional for us was the care and service we received from a young man named Michael. So kind, attentive, and caring throughout our time here. The aesthetics are amazing! Good beer. The food service and food itself are very lackluster and disappointing. We were very, very specific about food allergies in our group. We ordered my daughter plain pasta - no butter, no oil, no cheese, no garnish. I spelled it out to the server and said it twice. The dish came out with butter, green garnish, etc. I kindly reminded our server how we had specified our order. He just grabbed the plate, without apologizing. Then, when he brought it back out, the pasta was literally burned, charred with black all over it. Again, no apology. I wouldn't be taking the time to write this if this was just a one off. But, this was the second time this happened. I suggest you train your serving staff and cooks on how to kindly and appropriately manage people's simple food requests. Plain pasta is one of the simplest dishes you can make. There is no excuse. We ended up paying $$ for something my daughter couldn't even try to eat - twice! Just not cool. Won't be back. read more

We actually ate here twice while we were here :) The atmosphere here is always buzzing, the outdoor seating has great views. Our waiter very friendly and kept us hydrated. My first brewery experience in Bend and I'm so glad to randomly find this place that I enjoyed everything. Outdoor seating have nice breeze and river view. Definitely a good spot for a beer. Sausage plates have different pickles and sauce to go with the 3 kinds sausage. It's not greasy and tasty. Pretzel is beyond my expectations. When you first walk through the door, the decor in the atmosphere had a great feel to it. The attention to detail on the design was very spot on and very unique. We we only had an hour to hang out, because we wanted to go check out the Monday Night Football game so we didn't get to drink as many beers as we wanted to try out. The few we tried out were great! Our bartender was very friendly and very informative. He checked in with us enough, but not to the point where it could be annoying. I didn't get enough time in this place to really enjoy it as much as I wanted to, but the time I did spend was great. We parked nearby at the gear thrift store and then wanted to find a brewery where we could chill, have some drinks, and play card games. We looked up breweries and saw this one was within walking distance, so we came here! The inside has really cool decor including several tables made from huge oak trees, exposed brick, and medieval-style wagon wheel chandeliers hanging from above. My husband and a friend split one of their beer flights which came with 3 full size beers, so it was perfect for the two of them to split to try out a few different types. I got their hazelnut espresso martini and really liked it! My next drink was their featured cider which was a berry flavor that was tart but not too strong. Everyone seemed to like their drinks and we enjoyed hanging out here for a couple of hours. The back patio has a view of the nearby river, it was really nice to watch the sunset with that view; the back patio would be the move during the warmer months. The soft pretzel was warm and doughy--exactly what you want. It came with a nice cheese dip and a tangy mustard that gave it a little kick. The brussels sprouts were a surprise favorite: tangy, flavorful, and kind of uplifting in a weirdly refreshing way (not something I usually say about brussels sprouts!). I also tried the shrimp and bread appetizer, which was tasty and had a good balance between the seafood and the bread base--not too heavy, not too bland. I decided on a flight of four Belgian ales, all were great and appropriate for the style as full bodied and rich. My husband read some travel brochures highlighting that Bend, Oregon has some great breweries, and we would be traveling through Bend while in central Oregon. He was excited to discover there's a tap house called "Monkless Belgian Ales" in Bend, reminiscing about the dark stout beers that he enjoyed in Brussels during a vacation there a few years ago. After the challenge of finding parking, we visited Monkless on a Tuesday evening, around 6 pm, in Sept., 2024. We climbed up the stairwell from the riverside street, which brought us to the back patio, where we ultimately decided to sit. We ordered an appetizer from the "Communal" section of the menu to share. Our choice was the gluten-free Alsatian Bacon and Onion Tart ($18), which featured a thin cauliflower crust, topped with cream cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, and fresh chives. Our rating: 3.5/5. It was tasty, but we would've preferred a more traditional flour crust. It was also somewhat pricey given the size of the tart. My husband also ordered four beer tastings from the Build a Flight menu, which featured your choice of four 4-ounce pours for $10. (They also offer eight for $20). Preferring dark stouts, and as suggested by the waiter, he ordered (1) Dubbel or Nothing; (2) the FNG; (3) Meet your Maker; and (4) the Trinity. He enjoyed the variety, but liked the Meet your Maker best because it was the darkest, most malty. Good value. For a future visit, he might try Belgian bottles rather than the tap beers. Rating: 4/5. Not being much of a beer drinker, I ordered a specialty cocktail -- a Belgian Peach Bliss ($11), with Shepplekoffegan witbier, peach schnapps, and orange juice. Rating: 3/5. Ambiance. (3/5). We were on the back patio, with a nice view of the river, some greenery, and a parking lot. It was quite hot without shades, and the tall stool was uncomfortable for me, a short (5'4") person. The restaurant's music was also competing with the live band performing in the arena across the river. Service. (3/5). Our waiter was friendly and gave good recommendations for beers, but had to be reminded that we requested waters and had to be flagged down with our final bill. read more

My wife enjoyed her French onion soup and focaccia bread. The mushroom soup was just ok, it was way too thick and needed to be a soupier texture. Chunks of mushroom would have been nice too. We had such a pleasant experience kicking back on the outside porch overlooking the river that we decided to stop in for another night for dinner! My husband was pleased to see that there is a place dedicated to Belgium ales in area that typically just serve NW beers: NW IPAs. I was pleased to see a great list of cocktails! A lovely spot overlooking the river with good drinks and food. THE WAIT At 2pm on a Tuesday, the wait for 8 people was 45 minutes! We were really surprised. But we hung out in the front area (plenty of space and tables, room for the kids to play with their toys etc), and we were sat in 30 minutes at an outdoor table so our dog could be with us. They initially sat us at the end of the patio, which felt too warm, but we asked to be moved to the central part which was much cooler (more shade, an overhead fan), and they put a couple tables together for us. THE SERVICE Very friendly and available. It seemed every time we used up the last share plate on our table, our server or someone else immediately came over to bring us more. THE DRINKS * Hibiscus Ginger Mule ($13) - 4 stars. Refreshing and light. * Peppercorn Imperial Wit ($7) - 4 stars. Fruit-forward, refreshing, a little tart. Didn't taste the pepper so much. * Saison - 4 stars. Fruity, good. Our friends also got the Hibiscus drink and really enjoyed it. THE FOOD * Belgian Frites Cone ($9) - 4.5 stars. Fries were amazing, a lovely snappy crunch, medium thickness. Curry ketchup was interesting. * Roasted Brussel Sprouts ($17) - 5 stars. Amazing, how do they get that crisp?? The balsamic was great, the thick bacon bits a perfect accompaniment. * Sausage Board ($28) - 4 stars. A lovely array. We liked the one paired with mustard one the most. There was also a spicy one, and one paired with cilantro. * Bavarian Pretzel ($15) - 4 stars. Very soft and airy. Less crust than other pretzels. * Mandarin Poppyseed Salad ($12) - 3 stars. A bit boring, though the ingredients were fresh. * Belgo Burger ($19) - 3.5 stars. Interesting this was denoted as a "fork and knife burger". Indeed the bun fell apart easily, although it was deliciously soft. This could be eaten with your hands, but it ended up being quite messy.
