Saffron spaghetti with black olives and mozzarella
    Martin R.

I almost issued 5 stars because I felt a lot of attention is paid to every detail. It started with the most wonderful, fresh bread drizzled with an equally wonderful olive oil. The scallops appetizer, which was a special, was equally enjoyable, and so was the beef broth soup. The saffron spaghetti was another special I ordered. This was also very good; however, I didn't detect any saffron in this dish. When I pointed that out, I was told the spaghetti were made in saffron tea and that it was not 'overpowering.' This is what cost the one point. Real saffron is the single most expensive spice on earth with one pound of the real stuff retailing around $10,000; it is also the most tampered and forged spice there is on the market. As a chef, I would not take mention of it lightly without being able to back it up. It was a warm night in August, and I had a table outside on the patio. Service was great and left nothing to be desired. So was the dirty Martini, beer on tap, and the tiramisu for dessert that had a wonderful ratio of mascarpone cream to ladyfingers.

Bend has pretty much converted me to a food truck or pub kind of diner. It's infrequently that I opt for a "sit down" restaurant. But I have some places bookmarked to try, which included Trattoria Sbandati, so we popped over there yesterday to check it out (and by 'popped by,' I mean we made a reservation two days prior). Sbandati has the 'starter, first course, second course, dessert' thing but we're typically not big eaters so we ordered just two entrees (both first and second courses are full-plate 'entrees') and two sides, no dessert: polpette (three big meatballs in a tomato sauce), merluzzo all'aqua pazza (Alaskan cod in a different tomato sauce), cannellini beans and sauteed spinach. The meatballs also come with spinach but we like spinach. Everything was excellent. Food, service, ambiance. Sbandati is a small place and I imagine when it fills up it might get loud with conversation but we had an early reservation, so it was nice. I know Sbandati gets mentioned a lot when folks are asked about their favorite Italian restaurants in Central Oregon so it's probably no surprise that my verdict is: highly recommended.

Class, it does not cost much but means a lot.

5 Stars are few and far between these days but Trattoria Sbandati got me thinking, why did we wait so long to return other than I cannot pronounce the name, it takes me a few tries, ok I got it, ahh lost it again, no I don't have the skills, oh $#!&. YELP Short Answer: Yes for sure, make a Resi and enjoy a classy meal which is the BEST real Italian in Bend but not the most expensive, enough said there. Location: Kind of a funky location but it has stuck, was the old LaRosa back in the day and it wasn't that great then. Parking can be an issues so plan ahead. Buildout: Simple Italian, great kitchen I have visited several times when the owner was trying to do cooking classes ; ) Menu: Very simple, everything is explained and on our last visit, Joanna assisted and and was so perfect with drinks, wine, and menu explanations made decision making easy. Food Prep: Well done, nothing goofy about it just like being in Italy, the meal is the experience not the flower on top. Food Quality: This would be a 6 star on our night. Sorry to see some negative reviews but who knows all I can say is eccellentemente. Drinks: Great Martini here. Diner: Incredible both items were perfect which is pretty good. Wine: Perfect pairing Chianti of course. Desert: TM was great with an espresso. Waitstaff: Joanna is a professional and so exceptionally nice, glad she is back she is a 10 and you know I mean that! Overall Value: Excellent please enjoy, treat people as you'd like to be treated, Trattoria Sbandati is not an upscale kiss your @$$ overpriced, BS journey like some others have grown into. Venting I am. TIP: Resi app and get a confirmation. Outdoor seating is very nice weather dependent of course. Menu on website is not current, but that's Italian !!!!

Soup of the day. Tomato beef with pasta and parmesan. Mind blowing. Almost made me cry with the first spoonful.
    Big E.

Best meal I've had in a very, very long time. Food is prepared with heart and soul, and you can taste it. Cured meat selection was perfect starter for me. The soup of the day almost made me cry. The pan seared cod with tomato sauce was flavorful and satisfying. Italian cuisine is know for being fresh, flavorful and relatively simple. Trattoria Sbandati has been and always will be the best authentic Italian restaurant in Bend.

I had them and was very satisfied. Drinks were great, and we appreciated the non-alcoholic mocktail options for part of our group. The menu isn't very large and I think we both settled on choices quickly, deciding to try the most "quintessential" entrees to share. I chose the Blackened Redfish, and my boyfriend the Jambalaya. Even though we had already decided, the waitress went on her whole spiel through the menu highlights, including what we had already had planned to order. Awkward, but it was fine, and we didn't stray from our original choices. The Blackened Redfish was perfectly cooked and flaky. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a slightly tangy sauce. All of it was tasty, but I was a bit disappointed in the lack of spice to the blackening seasoning and the sauce. Also, serving it on grits instead of mashed potatoes would have made it feel 100% more Cajun, even with lack of seasoning. The Jambalaya fared a bit better, although my boyfriend was also left puzzled by the lack of spice to this classic dish. In all ways it was a very good representation of New Orleans style red jambalaya, with the andouille sausage being particularly notable for flavor. The cornbread it came with was pretty good. We shared a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. A very decadent concoction of chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel. It was one of the better $12 slices of cake I've had. Overall? The service was good, if not a bit awkward with the menu spiel. The food was all very well prepared, but for a Cajun style restaurant they sure could stand to spice things up a bit. It's not cheap, but at least the entrees are a full sized meal and you don't have to order many "tiny plates" to cobble together a dinner.

Bad news. Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

Awesome that you can do many different sides including regular fries, Cajun fries, salad, chips, and more options... do wish they had onion rings however. I got the hummus plate which was good but not the best I've had. It came with a baguette which was more like garlic bread so I would have, personally, liked pita more. It also had a few olives on the side with a red pepper type sauce. I got it with no pickled onions. They had a great beer selection and even a few tasty non-alcoholic beers. Also had kombucha on tap which was delicious (from Humm). Everyone working was super sweet and the vibes were relaxed and casual. Our food came out quick and exactly how we ordered it. They also seemed to have spaces for larger parties, too. They also have a little gift shop if you wanted to pick anything from shirts, to bottle openers, to beer candles and more! Would come back again!

I found myself wishing other areas of the restaurant had been designed or decorated more intentionally to honor its soulful past. It wants to be a high class spot, but something about the interior design feels underwhelming. I enjoyed the drinks I tried although the menu seems a bit unimaginative. The energy was strange, maybe it was that night, but bar staff seemed to be a bit "altered" and on edge. One was wearing what may or may not have been an intentional cologne that smelled like the overpowering essence of hot rubber mixed with cigar smoke, and leather. I ended up ordering the fresh steelhead and it was amazing. Caesar salad was lovely. And the drink of the night was called something like a White Christmas but was sort of a wintery margarita. Awesome night in the end. But I prefer the Redmond location.
