Looking to take advantage of the special's that are available during restaurant week in Providence, we chose the offering advertised on Open Table at the Pane Y Vino, who was offering a prix fixe menu at $34.95 for 2. When we sat down, we noticed the price fixe menu made no mention of the "for 2" special. I asked our waiter about it and he became a little belligerent, insisting that they had nothing to do with the error and that $34.95 per person was what all of the Providence restaurants charged during restaurant week. (I knew he was wrong about that, but merely encouraged him to correct the misunderstanding rather than draw people to the restaurant under a false pretext. Of course we were half way through restaurant week and they had not yet made any effort to notify Open Table of the misinformation.) So like lambs led to slaughter, we paid double for a meal that could only have been designed to be delivered as a special for the lower price. A starter of clams casino did little to brighten my mood - they were something like receiving a plate of unseasoned bread crumbs that fell through your fork as you searched for something that was breaded - only to find there was nothing - no clam, no bacon, and no flavor, just a mouthful of sawdust. Next came my swordfish and cous cous. The portion of fish was very small, underpinned in the bowl with a cous cous concoction that might well have been assembled using fish eyes and glue - with an overly tangy flavoring that overwhelmed the simple elegance of the grilled swordfish, but which you were forced to eat if you didn't want to leave the restaurant hungry. For dessert I had a piece of tiramisu - not very adventurous, but a cannoli was the only other option on the prix fixe menu. The sponge cake was over-saturated and had clearly not been properly refrigerated as the dessert was soupy and lacked the melt in your mouth thrill we expect from a competently prepared confection. First visit to Pane E Vino, and we were very impressed - especially with the valet parking. We had no reservations, and it was a busy Friday night, but we were able to get two seats at the bar. We just got drinks at the bar - every drink was delicious. The bartender was friendly and attentive. She also was creative with our drinks when we asked, and she made us both spin-off versions of our typical Gin & Tonic and Moscow Mule. Overall, the atmosphere was very enjoyable, and we can't wait to go back - for some food this time! read more

Excellent food and service. Went here with my brother and my parents for dinner, my brother has a lot of knowledge about wines and was very impressed that our waiter was too. The food was excellent, I had the gnocchi, mom went with the price fixed items, dad had the swordfish special and my brother had the beef special. Everyone had a taste of each dish and they were allldelicious. Our waiter was polite, attentive, and he was actually from Italy and gave us some good tips and places to go, if we ever went there. The ambiance is romantic, I would say it would be a good 1st date place to go to. It's not your typical italian restaurant, but if you have any questions about the menu, they have the answers. They also have comment cards that ypu can fill out and if you give them your email address, theu send you freebies. Mom got a $25 gift card from them on her birthday. read more

The service here was outstanding which pushed the rating to 4. The food was average to outstanding depending on the item. In the outstanding class were the calamari appetizer, veal chop and black linguine, although the latter was pretty spicy. Some of the southern Italian dishes were average to unexciting, including the Fusilli Neapolitan style. Wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. They advertise a wine bar,it is pretty small but we had no problem getting a seat on a Friday night at 8:00. Nice atmosphere. read more

This is the best Italian food on Federal Hill and the North End. The lamb lollipop appetizer was only second to the pasta and sausage appetizer. The duck is the best duck I've ever eaten anywhere. Im a bread pudding snob, I could not believe how unique this bread pudding is and how I could not stop eating it after all the other great food. There are lots of good Italian restaurants where I live in Boston. And the North end is a bit like federal hill as far as I can tell in that there are also a lot of 'touristy' restaurants where you can get a good meal, maybe not a great one, and Pan e Vino is in my opinion such a place. The latest accolades heaped upon Pan e Vino this year lead me to think that this place was something very special. True, the room is warm and very nice as was the service. The wine list is decent and they're not gouging on the markup (the '08 Antinori Tignanello was a deal at $165). But the food is of course the true test of any upscale restaurant. This is where I can't give Pan e Vino the high marks it has seemed to have earned. It was a Birthday dinner (2 actually, my self and my wife share the same day). Yes, we had high expectations, but the awards seemed to merit them, so we booked it. We started with the Calamari, Rhode Island style. Fresh fish, but bit soggy, not crisp or terribly hot. The polenta with shrimp and fresh marinara just didn't come together as a dish, again not terrible just not stellar. House made pasta Bolognaise was good and meaty and is a dish I have come to judge certain Italian restaurants by. I've just had a lot better (Butcher shop in the South End in Boston blows it away). We shared the Duck confit which was the best dish of the night, succulent wirth earthy, bright flavors. Still, all told, Pan e Vino just did not merit the high praise. Not sure if Boston just has better Italian restaurants in general but for an amazing Italian meal, go to La Morra in Brighton on rt 9. The food is serious Piedmontese and after dining there twice in the last 2 months the bar is set pretty high for me. Erbaluce is another standout in here in Boston and the bast pasta I've ever eaten. Neither is in the touristy North End. I wanted to love Pan e Vino, but in the end it was simply okay when compared to really talented, innovative chef's creations I've had this past year. Pan e Vino would be right at home in the North end of Boston where the demands are not as high. That may be a compliment to some, just not for the serious foodie IMHO. On the upside, for a really stellar meal, go to Gracie's. The 7 course tasting menu was out of the park great. I'd go back to Providence just to eat there again. I just can't say the same about Pan e Vino. read more

Stopped in for a light meal after a stroll through Federal Hill and enjoyed a delicious special salad and a unique, guilt-free pasta dish - braised broccolini and homemade orecchiette - that was full of flavor. We were tempted by the prix fixe menu, especially after seeing plates delivered to the table next to us, but we stayed strong. A week later, I wish we hadn't. Extremely disappointed with this restaurant. We went to this restaurant for a special occasion. My daughter and I are gluten free. While they have an extensive gluten free menu, they served bread to my husband and daughter who are not gluten fee and nothing to us. The service was lacking, we had to wait over an hour for our food and the manager was rude and did not care about our concerns. I wrote an email and requested the owner write to me but that did not happen. I had asked for a special dessert and that did not happen either. The locals were treated well but out of towners beware - they are not friendly here. Sorry that we wasted our good money on a poor establishment. read more

We hosted our rehearsal dinner for our son's wedding at Pane E Vino last weekend. Not only was the food excellent, but I can't say enough about the excellent staff. From the moment I called months ago to make the plans the staff was so easy to work with and extremely helpful. I had to make last minute changes as to the total attending and they couldn't have been more accommodating. When we arrived at the restaurant we were so warmly welcomed and the two waitresses that covered our party couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. I had an absolutely horrible experience last night at Pane e Vino. During a ride from NYC to Boston, my freind and I decided to stop for a good dinner (I'd been to the restaurant twice before). We arrived at 730 on Sunday night, seated without reservations and were introduced to our waiter, Kyle. We ordered after about 15 minutes. We got our appetizer at 9PM....90 minutes after arriving. All the tables were complaining since they were having the same experience. The table next to us told us we should leave!! We asked the waiter what was happening and we were told tha there was a back up in the kitchen. We wanted another beer, but the waiter never would make eye contact with us....we finally ordered one, but we didn't get it until nearly 30 minutes after ordeing it. AT one point, we had 2 empty beer glasses, 2 empty bread plates, 2 never used wine glasses, an empty bread basket and 2 empty water glasses on the table. When the veal finally came at 930, it was burnt.....it would have been futile to complain. The meal included dessert, but I told the waiter to just give us the check, he offered to wrap the dessert and I accepted. The waiter never apologized for the delay. The manager never acknowledged the delay. I tipped the waiter a mere 10%- half of my usual tip - for the horrible job. I will never go back, and I will tell as many people as I can about this outrageous experience. read more

This past weekend I took my husband to Providence to celebrate his 50th and 51st birthday, as well as our 10 year meeting and 7th year wedding anniversary which happened exactly one month earlier. I called the restaurant a week prior to make reservations and talked to Karen in the office, she couldn't have been more helpful, excited, pleasant, and more than willing to make sure our experience was unforgettable. When we arrived, the hostess brought us to the back of the restaurant to the very last table and it was fully decorated with little gold stars sprinkled all over the table and two cards set up celebrating our anniversary and my husband's birthday. From that point, we felt like VIPs.. Our server, Jason, attended our every need, want, and desire. We started with a bottle of Merlot, followed by some AMAZING mussels Arrabiata, and the ABSOLUTELY BEST grilled octopus we've ever had, and we've had octopus so many times in many cuisines. Jason was an absolute doll, and the manager even came back to introduce himself and assured us that if we needed anything, they would be at our service. My husband had the veal Saltimboca and I had the fish special, which was striped bass in a broth over Israeli couscous, with roasted burst cherry tomatoes and wilted escarole. DELICIOUS! At the end of the meal, we asked for espresso martinis and their house made tiramisu. They brought out the desert with a candle and the whole service staff, including the manager, came back and sang "Happy Birthday " in Italian. After the cloud-like tiramisu, Jason came back with two complimentary house-made limoncello. All in all, the restaurant gave us a very welcoming reception, amazing, romantic meal, and an overall unbelievable experience my husband and I have ever had. read more

Pane e Vino is a very special place for food, service and ambiance. From the great appetizers to the perfectly prepared pasta dishes the preparation and presentation was perfect. My out of town friend and I went for dinner on a monday evening since we learned they were offering all their wines at 50% off. That was already a great start. We ordered the beef carpaccio and the zucchini flowers: both appetizers were delicious. For pasta course we shared the bucatini amatriciana cooked perfectly al dente and full of flavor. The entrees were terrific including a best ever veal milanese, topped with amazing salad and the pork chop with figs sauce that came with gnocchi and cauliflowers. For dessert we shared the warm bread pudding.. impeccable. They have a great selection of italian amaros and grappas. We found the service to be attentive, professional and courteous: we received a warm reception from the host despite the fact that we showed up on a busy monday night without a reservation. I am very disappointed with the handling of our reservation! I made a reservation through OpenTable for 12 people 54 days prior to our event. We live out of state and were planning to entertain a large group of family after a college graduation in the area. I called the restaurant 8 days after making the reservation to confirm it. Jessica took my cc # and my cell number and told me I would be called before charging $20/person as a deposit. I told her no problem. I called back 20 days later and added two more people to our reservation. I talked to Richard (the manager) and he in fact told me that the space they were reserving for us could actually hold 15. I told him that at that point they could go ahead and charge my cc for the 14 people. He agreed. Ten days prior to the reservation date, I called to confirm because they had not yet charged my cc. They told me that they had canceled my reservation through OpenTable. They said they tried to contact us. They used the cell number on the OpenTable account (my husbands) and they never called my number even though I was the one making all the arrangements and it was my number I had asked them to use. Richard apologized for the mistake and offered a reservation to us for that day but we could not accept as it was during the graduation. read more

Disappointed to say the least. I took my fiancé there for a special night out one Saturday. We made reservations over a week before for 8:00. After we moved through the packed entrance way of other disgruntled couples who had been waiting a while to be seated for their reservations, we checked in and stood around for 45 MiNUTES before we were seated. We watched 2 couples leave because they had been waiting so long. The woman who I believe to be manager, did not check in with anyone who was waiting. She would also periodically yell at the hostess who was visibly uncomfortable. After seeing this restaurant was voted best in providence, we were excited to try to the food, which was less than average. We were really disappointed. Service was just okay. The best thing about this place was the valet. I would not go back there or recommend it to anyone. If you want great Italian food and service as well as a nice staff, go to Camille's.
