Although we didn't have reservations, we arrived early and were seated promptly. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, setting the stage for a wonderful meal. We started with freshly baked bread and olive oil--simple yet outstanding. The fried calamari was perfectly prepared, crisp and flavorful. While the food was good, the service was terrible and the main reason for my 3 rating. We tried to give our server the benefit of the doubt given that it was a busy time, but for only 2 drinks and 3 food items, we should not have needed to ask multiple other waiters if they could find our person so we could order/pay. The food itself was good, we ordered the cacio pepe and maccheroncini del cardinale - both were flavorful and had a nice balance of fat that made the meals hearty. We also ordered the tiramisu which was larger than expected and soaked well. " Pane e Vino" is located on Atwell's in federal hill and, despite being on a busy street, has a quiet and intimate feel. Excellent Italian restaurant with great service. It was raining and we walked without an umbrella due to a street closure. The front desk manager offered us cloth napkins to dry off when we walked in. They have a menu of different options and we started with the Arancini, which were crunchy and gooey inside. All of the pasta dishes were cooked properly al dente and the I enjoyed trying a little bit of each. Tables are close to each other and the restaurant is not huge but the ambiance is very lively. Our first time here. We had reservations but were able to get seats at the bar. The gentleman working the door was extremely polite and accommodating. Our bartenders Mike and Justin were F'ing awesome!! They made the night. Great conversation, great recommendations, and they are a great team. We started off with the Burrata and it was delicious. Note: the crostini's were a little thin (high society problem..LOL). We then split the lasagna which was good but just a little on the dry side for us. To end the meal, I had a double expresso and my wife had an expresso martini which both were fantastic. I highly recommend eating here. If possible, sit at the bar. Can I first say that the food was good enough last week to bring my sister back to try other dishes, even if the service wasn't great. Sadly- the service was still questionable. We asked for the San Felice Il Grigio Chianti Riserva and got the San Felice Chianti, which is a good wine don't get my wrong but hasn't aged as long and didn't pair as well with the food we ordered. When the bottle was brought, we double and triple checked from the server, Dwight, and he declared multiple times that it was the correct bottle. Who are we to argue with someone who serves these bottles everyday. Once we started drinking it, we knew it was the wrong one. When the food came, we ordered the special salad of the night and would have eaten it many times over. The goat cheese was a nice touch. The pasta dishes came out and I will tell you, they do Sunday Gravy right! The Fusili Al Ragu Napoletano was a good choice. What wasn't great, was the broken sauce and burnt bacon. My fellow diner said the chocolate chip cannolo was really good and very worth it, even if it was a hot plate that made it melt. Either way, I'm not thrilled that I gave the service a 2nd chance only to see the food be lesser than my first experience which is sad. AMAZING, simply amazing. My husband and I were in Providence RI for my birthday weekend. It's a city we go to each year and enjoying picking a restaurant in Federal Hill to try during our visits. I have dined at many fine restaurants in Boston and this one is better than any restaurant we have eaten at in Boston or Providence....for several reasons: Upon walking in, it reminded me of a small restaurant in Boston's North End. We were pleasantly greeted (by the owner if I was to guess). We requested to sit at the bar because that is what we like. The seats had a Happy Birthday sign and sparkles. There were two bartender (Dylan and Mike F) that could possibly have the customer service skills I have ever experienced. I asked if they had blue cheese olives before ordering a dirty martini. Mike told me that Dylan had just finished hand stuffing them YUM! My husband had the Stoli Doli cocktail. After our drinks, Mike F asked if we thought about an appetizer. I mentioned that I read about an eggplant rollatini appetizer in a post but I did not see it on the menu. Dylan overheard our conversation and told us that it used to be on the menu, but he would ask the chef if they would make it. I was touched that he offered to do that and thankful when Dylan came back and said, "yes, the chef will make that appetizer for you." It was delicious - eggplant was so tender, filled with a pillow of ricotta and topped with the perfect amount of cheese and sauce. Next was the bread.....the olive oil and freshly cut crunchy bread. Without asking, Dylan brought us out something they don't normally server. It was sharp cheese with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar to go with the bread. Again, such a nice touch!! Onto the entree - we asked several questions of Dylan and Mike F as we tried to figure out what we wanted to eat. We decided on the Braciold Di Maiale (grilled pork chop, caramelizedfigs, potato gnocchi and roasted cauliflower). We were sold on it when Dylan explained that the chef on duty actually created this dish. To say it was THE BEST pork chop dish I have ever had is an understatement. It was tender, juicy and the outer crust was something a high end restaurant should try to achieve. We also ordered the Patata Croccante (crispy Fontina potato cakes) which were lightly fried and delicious. We ate every morsel - overstuffed but we couldnt push away such delicious food. We didnt try any of the desserts but finished off the night with two shots of their homemade Lemoncello. Again, the bartenders brought the shots over to us without even asking. Their service industry skills are second to none. I will think about this restaurant often and probably wont order a pork chop at any place else. The two bartenders added such a wonderful experience to our night out. So very happy we found Pane E Vino and it will be the only place we eat the next time we are visiting Providence RI. read more

We just happened upon this treasure as we were dropped off by our Uber in Little Italy. Providence, RI We have traveled to Italy and wow, we were transported back! Greeted with true Italian warmth. We had to run early from our dinner so took entrees to go. We got the spaghetti puttanesca and guanciale. When we ate them later, both pastas were so dry with barely any sauce at all. There were also basically no guanciale or anchovies. Both of us were very surprised and reasoned that the lack of sauce must be because we got them to-go, but that is still not an excuse. When I say dry btw I mean bone dry. The guanciale pasta especially was pretty bad. The appetizers we got while dining in were great so the drop off in quality was drastic. Hoping to go again to see if the food in restaurant is better, but even if it is I think doing better on to-go would benefit them greatly read more

Atwells Avenue is a little slice of Italo-phile greatness in the sometimes grungy city of Providence. Though Miami/Fort Lauderdale style hookah bars blasting rap music have infiltrated this once old school street lined with classic Red Sauce Italian joints, it still has a faint feel of Italy's small town piazzas ... if Italy's famous yellow stucco buildings were replaced with giant square triple deckers with vinyl siding. The two most picturesque restaurants on Atwells Avenue (not counting the old school Jimmy Marzilli's Canteen, which looks to be transported from the 1920's) are Constantino's/Venda which looks like it could have been designed by the same Disney Imagineers who built Epcot ... and Pane Vino which looks much more European. To save you time ... a synopsis of the review: - Outdoor seating is the best option as inside is very cramped and people brush past you no matter where you sit. - The food is average, at best, but tries to remain authentic Italian. - If you are eating for atmosphere, this place will make you feel most like you are in Italy (outside). Let's dive in ... We were seated outside and within 5 minutes, a group of old codgers walked out the door and one of them stopped and blasted a loud fart 2 feet away from our faces while we were seated. Welcome to Atwells Avenue at 8 p.m. Aside from our gassy friend who walked promptly to his car after his bout with doorway flatulence, all was pretty good with the atmosphere. Nice flowers in buckets, tables distanced and a great waiter who was very attentive and personable. Constantinos has music and dancing on the weekends if you prefer a more lively atmosphere but the tables are more spaced out at Pane Vino. The food was similar to many RI Italian restaurants ... average. The cacio con pepe (an Italian version of deconstructed macaroni and cheese made with spaghetti, was more like a spaghetti al fredo with pepper. In fairness, outside of Italy, I have not found a suitable version as the American versions seem to go heavy on the cream. The worst dish of the day (other than old man toots) was the Frito Misto. In Italy the batter is just barely there ... lighter than tempura and almost flaky. A little salt and lemon ... dry crisp batter and fresh seafood ... nothing better. What we got here was thick fried batter which was overcooked to almost brown and soggy with oil. Maybe it was double battered and not patted down before plating ... but this was not a frito misto as described on the menu (lightly battered) this was a thick cotlrnmeal style batter. Way too heavy, way too greasy and way too overcooked. I'd have sooner eaten $18 worth of fried dollar bills, which is what it cost. The meatballs were good. I'm used to a crisp/pan fried edge with a juicy inside. (Rao's spoiled me) Most will find them acceptable. Not the best ... not the worst. The red sauce was typical of Providence ... blended to a soup-like consistency and very sugar-sweetened. Again, not the worst I've had but far from the best. The chicken dishes are good. Nicely reduced sauce, cooked well ... maybe a bit on the salty side. Probably nothing someone would complain about ... but nothing to write home about. The seafood di mare was good. The potato cakes served as a side were okay but would have been better if they weren't stone cold in the center making us wonder, Gordon Ramsay-style, if they were fresh or frozen. Much better than the frito misto though. Overall, we felt the atmosphere and good service made up for the lackluster food. You couldn't pay me to eat inside it was so cramped but outside was nice on a summer night. Other than the Frito Misto, everything was edible and okay. I will mention that the wine list was fantastic with several great Napa cabs and Tuscan wines. Maybe a few of the better Tuscan wines I've had ... many were 2016 vintage which is fantastic for that region. We probably would come back for the atmosphere alone. The food we can put up with. Hopefully the farty old men will go on different days. read more

This was my first time here. I came for the raisin bread pudding that my cousin swears by it is the BEST. Well, I must say is pretty dawn delicious. If you are a fan like me with the bread pudding you should give it a try to this one. Definitely recommend this place for that. Five stars beginning to end. I was worried about parking (busy Federal Hill neighborhood) and was so happy to see a valet waiting to park my car. That started things off right. Then somehow they knew it was our anniversary, and not only was our table decorated with a card and flower petals - everyone who came to the table wished us a happy day. Nice touch. The food was amazing. Olives and oil and bread were lovely to start, then we had some kind of cheese baked with mushrooms and red sauce - heavenly. I would have been content with that and a glass of wine. But no, we tried the fettuccine with mushrooms and peas in a creamy sauce, and the cacio e pepe - both perfectly executed. We really should have stopped there, but the dessert list beckoned- olive oil cake (sounds weird, I know, but so good!) and cannoli AND affogato. We had to waddle to the car, in the end, but it was a happy waddle. Love the atmosphere (kind of a busy, friendly, happening vibe) and the low-key respectful and friendly staff. However, we weren't seated until over an hour after our reservation time because there was a big family party in the back, and we were frankly very frustrated when we were finally seated. However, the customer service and quality of the food more than made up for this wait. The waiter and waitresses were professional and lived up to their restaurant's high-end reputation. They took our jackets, presented our wine, gave us new utensils for each dish, etc. We also appreciated them providing us with complimentary calamari to compensate for the delay. I ordered a seasonal Italian 3-course meal and absolutely enjoyed it! Although I'm very uncultured in Italian dining, the dishes were distinctively authentic. They had fresh ingredients that came together to create nuanced flavors. I especially enjoyed the fish and broccolini of the second course. Being brought up Italian you have come to expect certain things when it comes to Italian cuisine (using the proper ingredients and preparing it properly). As a human who has eaten all of of one's life you also come to expect basic tenets of eating (should be edible). Unfortunately, Pane e Vino did not impress on the Italian side and failed miserably on the basics. The salad should not be swimming in dressing and the pasta should not be so hot as to be dangerous to eat. This is not an exaggeration - I burned my throat eating my gnocchi and brought it home in order to eat it. It all my years eating fresh gnocchi from my grandmother and mother (me as well), or eating out have I ever had to wait for my sauce to reach safe eating temperatures. NEVER. My wife even tried it (about 10 minutes after it was served) and could not eat it. If it was not for our waitress, this would have been 1 star. read more
