Solid Italian joint for our group of 7 at lunch - food was good, portions were very generous, but service was hit or miss. Getting the server's attention required -really- waving down them down with two hands high in the air a few times, as eye contact and a little wave was not sufficient. They also seemed to be tending to the bar, but there was another bartender there too, and it wasn't very busy...and we were sat literally across from the bar and felt ignored. They dropped the bread basket 30 mins in and it took 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Once food was at the table the service picked up. One thing to note is they serve their dinner menu at lunch time on the weekends, which was not apparent from their website, so entrees averaged $35 for most of our group. There was also a 4% surcharge for using a Visa credit card and not paying cash (further research says using a debit card you can avoid this charge, we were not from RI). While we enjoyed the food, we'd likely look elsewhere next time for better service and more transparency on prices and charges upfront given there's many restaurant options in the area. read more

I was in Providence for work and was craving Italian food for dinner, so I asked the hotel shuttle driver for the best Italian food in town and she didn't even hesitate--she took me straight to Cassarino's. Let me tell you, the locals know! As soon as I walked into the restaurant I could small delicious food! I wound up ordering their special, which was homemade rigatoni in a creamy pesto sauce with chicken, fresh tomatoes and broccoli all topped with shaved parmigiana and fresh basil. This was the very first time I was served a meal in a restaurant that was so hot and fresh I had to take my time to eat it. And the portion size was hearty; enough for two meals! By the way, the bread here is superb! It had the best golden brown crust--nice and thick--and the inside of the bread was soft and warm. I was in heaven! I thought it had a classic atmosphere that wasn't pretentious, yet it could be perfect for date night or out with friends. It's hard to describe, but just felt comfortable. Where do I start with this review without salivating? The Federal Hill area in Providence is well-known for its contribution to the food scene here in the Ocean State, and Cassarino's changed my impression of pasta and Italian food as a whole. My friend and I wanted to celebrate our recent graduation with a night out. We started with bread and irresistible dipping oil, followed by my chicken escarole soup, perfect for a cold night. My selection was hearty, with ample chunks of tender chicken and a broth that complements it oh so well. Moving on to the main entrée, I had the rigatoni bolognese, a pasta dish generously topped with a traditional meat sauce composed of veal, pork, and beef. This tomato-based sauce had the perfect amount of seasoning and thickness to pair with the noodles. I love everything about it and could very much make it my entire personality. Generally, I always answer "yes" when asked, "Do you have room for dessert?" Yet, I shy away from picking something off the sweets menu because: A. Everything sounds great, and I'm indecisive. B. I'm afraid the portions are too big. C. I want to share something with someone, but we have different tastes when it comes to dessert. The trio sampler of mini sweets, tiramisu, crème brûlée, and cannoli, was the answer to all my problems. Each option had the perfect amount of sweetness, just enough that it wasn't overbearing on the tongue. Though I'm a sucker for all three (with crème brûlée holding a special place in my heart), the light tiramisu takes the cake for this foodie. The ambiance was great, with second-floor seating that overlooks the Federal Hills street. first of all, I would just like to say that the waiter/ wait staff was excellent. on the other hand, the female owner was rude and inconsiderate. our party was a party of 8. we spent at least $100 per person. the owner came up to us and told us that "we were loud at a 9 and she needed us to be at a 5". Understandable, we are italian and loud, But the fact that we spend $658, and then proceeded to ask to speak to the manager after being told our business doesnt matter, is down right rude. We are customers spending over $600 to eat and dine with these people and we did not deserve to be talked to the way that we were. There are respectful ways to tell people that they are loud, and the owner did not do that. I will not be returning due to this ignorant owner. Even a frugal financial mutant in training such as myself who doesn't venture out as much as many others here probably do knows that finding a restaurant firing on all cylinders can be quite rare these days. And yet Cassarino's manages to do so whilst making it look naturally effortless. Shout out to my outta town gal pal for recommending this shiny beacon of a restaurant as our super chill friendly send off dinner for one another. Ya see, my friend was in the mood for authentic Italian cuisine. After much deliberation, we settled on this place. And we're glad we did...even IF their portions can be rather enormous for the modest eater. Plus, it doesn't help that my friend eats like a bird, even whilst preggers. But....that's really a minor point. If you scope their website and YP prior to visiting as I often do, you'll note they offer free valet. Okay...technically nothing is free. But at least you don't pay extra for the valet service. Just be sure to arrive with cash for tipping because these guys definitely deserve one. Easiest way to take advantage of this is to arrive on the same side of the road the restaurant is on so that you may pull directly into the valet lane. If you see a dude with dark glasses approach your vehicle, you have just met your valet driver for the evening (it's not as ominous as it sounds). Hand them the keys, remove any valuables you have, then they take it from there. Immediately upon walking in, you'll spot their WiFi password on the hostess' desk; which, despite taking care to snap a quick pick for reference, I instantly forgot to bother using upon sitting at our table. XD That's probably because we both were hella distracted by the stellar waiter service, immaculate restaurant decor, and stunning food bestowed before our very eyes. The cuisine here can best be described as casual fine dining. For starters, we had the Aracini (or risotto balls for us non-Italians). Crispy on the outside, creamy and saucy on the inside. These pair perfectly with their homemade marinara sauce. But be forewarned: these babies are HUUUUGE!! I'm used to seeing these the size of your average meatball. These were about 3 times bigger. We each ate one, seeing as we still had main courses coming. 9 out of 10, totally worth taking home whatever you can't finish. The bread with garlic oil was a nice addition, too. It was reminiscent of what you'd get from the Macaroni Grill, only executed way better. The oil seasons the bread adequately. With that out of the way, we gotta talk about the Cassarino Burger I got. Now, reading the ingredients to this thing had my initial doubts. Then I reminded myself that was probably just my culinary anxiety talking and that I should simply take a chance on this thing. OH EMM GEE, does this dish ever slap! The fact that all the ingredients work in a perfectly harmonized synergy to the point where no element ends up dominating the palate, yet is still packed full of flavor is just....*mwah*...chef's kiss! To better understand this, I must take you through my bizarre thought process. See, I was worried that maybe the sweet onions and balsamic reduction would make the burger taste "off", since I'm not usually a fan of sweet and savory flavors being mixed together. However, one bite of this 10 ounce monster (yeah, more than half a pound) told me these chefs knew precisely what they were doing. Firstly, the burger itself was both seasoned and cooked to perfection! It even had a nice charred sear which added that final layer of flavor we come to love as grill masters. Second, they topped it off with crumbled Gorgonzola cheese. This offered a potency which was then slightly offset by the sweet onion and balsamic mentioned earlier. Cap it all off with a toasted bun and crispy hickory smoked bacon and you've got yourself a legit upscale burger that isn't pretentiously priced. Believe me when I tell you....this was easily worth the price! Granted, the fries were slightly overcooked, but still mostly edible. I suppose I could have swapped them out for the redskin mash or something, but....it didn't really ruin anything for me as is. 9 out of 10, would highly recommend. Overall, it was a lovely night with a grand time had by all. Hoping to check out more places around the Providence area in the coming months. The only change I would make is not eating at the bar. The bartender was top notch for making drinks but should prioritize the customers eating at the bar more. I can't believe the reviews I read prior to coming here. If it's the first time you're having Italian food, like at all, I get it. But good lord, sweet baby Jesus was this anything but satisfying. Pros: 1. Waitress was awesome and attentive 2. Potato croquette. Easily the best item on the menu, I'd order 2 next time and call it. Cons; 1. Didn't get any bread service, but in hindsight kinda glad because im sure the quality of the bread and oil would match the rest of the food. 2. Speaking of which, there are just some things you have and you can just tell it came out of a box or a can. The Margherita pizza was made on a pre-fab dough that is a step up from a tortilla. Not joking. The red sauce, the worst of the worst Reataurant Depot canned sauce. You know the dark red "marinara" with the tomato chunks and little specks of pepper? Yeah, that acid reflux inducing paste is what they use for 90% of their dishes. If you're charging $27 for a plate of pasta, can someone hand crush a tomato? I guess not 3. We ordered scallops and I didn't know that it was possible to come in the shade of Dark Brown that they came in. Not a touch of white ANYWHERE, and they sent it out.... 4. Got a lasagna because why not. Pink vodka sauce and "bolognese" meat, which is claiming to be beef, pork, and veal. What it didn't claim to be was so dry that the crumbles of meat fell out the second you cut into it. We recently chose Cassarino's to celebrate my mom's birthday--a place we've supported for years. Unfortunately, it ended up being a deeply disappointing and frustrating night. Yes, we were late, and I take full accountability for that. However, we did call ahead to let the restaurant know. At no point during that call were we informed that our time at the table would be shortened. If that had been made clear, we might have tried to make other arrangements. Upon arrival, we were told we had the table until 7:30 (an hour & a half) and we did our best to respect that. In fact, we decided not to have dessert there and planned to go elsewhere, just to be mindful of time. What truly soured the experience was what happened toward the end. At 7:20, another party was seated beside us, and it was made very obvious--by both staff and their guests--that we were holding up their evening. The pressure was palpable, and we were effectively crowded and rushed out. It felt like we were being bullied out of our seats. Meanwhile, we were not lingering unnecessarily--we were simply waiting on our check, and our server was understandably busy. We were leaving and did not deserve to be treated that way. It was shocking to be treated with such a lack of courtesy and respect. We traveled over 30 minutes, chose your restaurant for our celebration, and were treated in a way I've never experienced anywhere else-- including other places with time limits. If you're looking for good food and a quick meal, Cassarino's delivers. But if you're planning a birthday, anniversary, or any special gathering, I would strongly suggest you look elsewhere. We just spent Easter Sunday here of dinner. The food was great but the service was poor. It Started off ok, but we were left waiting for our main waiter to return with cutlery and condiments. We ended up grabbing from another table.. Before we had really finished our meals there were three different servers who came by asking if they could clear the table. Where did our waiter go?? Ordered espresso and a cannoli. The cannoli was excellent. Waiter did not offer any lemon rind or sugar for the espressos. We had to call him back over for this..... We had a bottle of wine, an old fashioned, The Cassarino, shrimp scampi, and the pasta con broccoli rabe aglio. I mean, you can't get more traditional Providence than that. The wine was tasty and a perfect compliment to the veggies that came with the broccoli rabe dish, and the veal in the Cassarino was tender and to die for. It wasn't terribly crowded at lunch, though I did make a reservation to be on the safe side. It was a nice place to talk and catch up, and our server, Daniel, was attentive but would come and go without interrupting the flow of our dinner, which was incredible and very nice. I was really pleased with the meal, the place was clean and modern, but still had the old school touch. Well, we were planning on using one of our Christmas gift cards another Federal Hill restaurant today for lunch, but we drove up and found that they are closed for renovations..... so we went to Cassarino's. Good decision! Haven't been there in years and we were not disappointed. The renovations they've made since we were there last are really nice. Our server, Drew, was pleasant and very efficient, considering how many tables he was taking care of. I had a nice glass of Federalist Zinfandel (one of my faves), and my husband had a Riesling. They offer 6oz or 9oz pours. I couldn't decide what to have for lunch so many yummy options. I chose the Pollo Rabe: Grilled chicken breast served over a bed of sautéed rabe with prosciutto, topped with roasted peppers and portabella mushrooms, asparagus spears and roasted potatoes. It was so good and the portion was big enough that I brought 1/2 home. My husband is the connisoeur of chicken parm and he really enjoyed it. Lunch portion was $17.95. Perfect portion size for him. I forgot to take pictures of the food because I was so excited to eat it but it was so so delicious! Went here with my mom for lunch on a Monday. We got the mushrooms and escarole soup to start which were both incredible. Nothing was overcooked and it all had a wonderful texture. The mushrooms weren't overdone or underdone and they had a very nice texture. We got the veal parm and the chicken parm for entrees. The red sauce is really delicious.
