In a sea of endless Italian food on the hill, Andino's can be easily overlooked but not outdone. After trying just about every other spot on Atwells, I can't believe it took me this long to get to Andino's....my mistake! The host seemed surprised to see us despite being right on time for our reservation but we were seated right away after a quick exchange. Our server Erik came right over with a smile and continued to be a consummate professional throughout the evening. I wish I could have him be my server everywhere I go. We started the night with some seasonal cocktails. The spiced pear old fashioned was to die for. Complete with a solitary large cube and balanced flavors it was delicious. Our table had veal parm, linguine and white clam, and lasagna. Each dish was fresh and executed perfectly. It's a garlic lovers paradise but never overpowering, in a way any Nonna would approve. For dessert we split a slice of limoncello cake. The cake was so light and fluffy it was like eating air. Even the frosting was light enough where it didn't feel like we were stuffing ourselves to finish it. It's a smaller place so it gets busy quickly and can be a little loud. I would highly recommended a reservation as I don't think you'd have much luck getting a table on a weekend. Andino's is my favorite Italian restaurant in the Federal Hill neighborhood in Providence. If you haven't been to Providence you have no idea they have some of the best old school Italian anywhere. There is nothing better than grabbing a couple of bar stools and having dinner at the bar. Terry, their fabulous bartender has been making exceptional classic cocktails for 20 years. She makes you feel like you're home from the moment you walk in. Along with their fantastic Italian fare, they have a nice selection of seasonal cocktail recipes. I usually stick with my staple Manhattan when eating Italian so trust me it's one of the best you'll have. Andino's is known for a very healthy pour which is nice given how skinny they get these days. So nice, my friends and call it a kiddie pool. Who doesn't love a heavy pour? The calamari was cooked just right with a nice crunch not overcooked at all. The portion was way bigger than I was expecting . His is not an appetizer for one person at all. I ordered angel hair pasta and 2 meatballs and 1 hot sausage. The portion was well worth the price. Everything was good but the meatballs need more flavor but other than that it was all good. Maigin was my waitress and she was very helpful and friendly with making sure I had everything I needed. She is an excellent waitress she gets a thumbs up on top of her rating. If you're unfamiliar with Federal Hill they have a beautiful mural of it on the wall. This is a casual ambiance setting here very relaxing and comfortable. So a few things has changed since I've last been here for lunch- and I'm disappointed. This has and will still be my favorite restaurant anywhere for lunch or dinner- but we will not be able to go as often . For lunch, there was a 30 percent increase on cost and significantly reduced portions (chicken used to cover the plate) - and now there is a credit card fee on the bill of 5 percent. I totally get it restaurants need to do this to keep up with inflation and stay afloat- I was surprised it was so quiet there during lunch it used to be a very busy spot for lunch. I felt overwhelmed today with increased price, smaller portion and a credit card charge. Food was still amazing and drinks always on point. Service exception so no complaints there. read more

I came to Andino's for lunch on the hill and valet was a huge bonus considering it was the weekend, rainy, and busy. They parked my vehicle right away and I was able to get quick service at the bar. They give you complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic. For an appetizer, I got the fried mozzarella. It came with 4 thick mozzarella triangles and a delicious crispy breading. I would suggest asking for extra marinara sauce on the sauce, it was so good! For an entree, I ordered chicken franchise - a good piece of chicken but the sauce was very thin and too much lemon. My boyfriend's dish stole the show, he got Chicken Parmesan in a pink vodka sauce. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle with a delicious pink vodka sauce smothered with cheese on top. The pink vodka sauce had a nice creamy texture and great flavor. She was friendly but didn't know the menu, didn't know the food, couldn't hear us, and generally unaware. I asked her the different options for the snails and she literally just read the menu to me. Another server saw this and gave me the response I was looking for. When explaining to my son that the dish was hot, she nearly stuck her face in his food. I have been to Andinos multiple times and had a wonderful experience. It's been a couple of years since I've been there. From the moment we sat down we were approaches by wait staff pushing us on drink orders. I have never felt so pushed to order. It was definitely not a relaxing experience. The tossed salad I ordered had 2 olives, three small croutons and 2 small pieces onion. My salad was awful. Old lettuce. The Tips of the lettuce stalks were brown meaning it's been around a while. Of our party of 4, one order was wrong. For the prices they charge, it should be a rememberable experience . It was not!! The best atmosphere for old school Italian cooking on Federal Hill especially now that Old Canteen is gone. Have been here many times and tried something from pretty much all the major menu categories. My favorite is the seafood dishes as they are fresh and the portions are generous though not so overwhelming they can't be finished in one sitting. Had the Cod Italiano on recent visit which was freshly garnished with olive oil and grilled peppers and tomatoes. Some other favorites include the burrata salad, stuffed mushrooms and any red sauce pasta dish particularly the chicken parm or lasagna. The rat pack charm of this place is almost as good as the food. Definitely a place where you want to make a reservation probably a week or two in advance if you don't want to eat at 9pm, or worse, not get a table at all. It's that good and that popular and the seating area is pretty small. They are a scratch kitchen so dishes can be customized to suit dietary needs and they do have gluten pasta for my daughter. We all loved the antipasto, I am dieting so I went with the salmon and broccoli rabe which was delicious and didn't feel like I was denying myself at all. My daughter had shrimp scampi. I can't personally attest to how good it was as she wouldn't even share a bite. My husbands lasagna was plentiful end amazing. Our waiter, maybe Eric or Derek, was so attentive and had a great personality. With 13 years at Andino's, he has surely earned tenure. You don't stick around that long in the restaurant industry unless you are the proprietor or they are doing something very right. When my mom is visiting we try to make a point to visit Andino's and this was her birthday so they brought out a complementary tiramisu with candle. Traipsing in one blustery icebergish dusk, we were warmly greeted and invited to a 'metsa metsa' table snack dab in the middle; it was fairly slow early - but not the corner booth we'd requested in advance for our getaway. But with our perky server (Andrea, I believe) and Camillo hovering nearby, why quibble? As we perused the menu, we noticed a lively bar scene, older men chatting, like something one might find in Verona or Naples. For wine lovers, the choices are intriguing; I went with the distinctive Brancaia "Tre" after requesting a sample; a robust red with a complex, earthy finish. My wife, a martini lover, rather enjoyed her Bellini Martini but fretted its modest size. As from the world class service, two positives remain from the evening: first, a fabuloso Eggplant Rolatini - delicate eggplant smothered in zesty pasta sauce and draped with copious amounts of Mozzarella cheese; and second, the world class Broiled Stuffed Icelandic Cod. If you think that sounds intriguing, it is: a hefty Cod filet above a nice serving of home-made stuffing drenched in a rich, aromatic tan sauce. Dessert, Spumoni and Tiramisu formed a nectary finish. But, alas, being asked to clear out by 6pm to make space for a large group was a distinct turnoff. Sigh, turning a pleasing setting into one much less so. Such a wonderful Italian spot in the heart of Federal Hill. We luckily were able to reserve a few seats at the bar on a Tuesday night about an hour in advance. The bartender is incredibly efficient, kind, and straightforward. She makes an unbelievable martini too. We split a bottle of red wine and each had a different meal. I had the chicken picatta paired with angel hair pasta. The chicken was soft enough to not need a knife and the capers were a wonderful touch of texture. The sauce was extra buttery and had the perfect amount of lemon. My mom had the chicken parmesan which was arguably one of the best I've ever tried. The chicken was thin and had the perfect crispy edges and the cheese to sauce ratio was spot on. My dad had the fish française which he says, and I quote "the single best peice of flavored fish I've ever had." That speaks for itself! Come take advantage of the the valet and have a wonderful dinner at this upscale Italian spot, but be sure to call in advance for a reservation! read more

Visited Andino's for lunch today. Tried their calamari as an appetizer along with the eggplant rollatini and veal saltimbocca for entrees. The calamari was fried and served with sliced pickled hot peppers. This might have been the best calamari I have ever had and I have eaten this type of dish all over the country. The coating was good and without a burned taste on the calamari like you get in many places, plus the hot pepper slices just pushed it over the top. The eggplant rollatini was a huge portion, (3) pieces, and overall pretty good, it was different than many other eggplant rollatini's in that it contained a nice portion of I believe prosciutto in the center of each piece, and I could not identify the ricotta in it if any. The only part of it that didn't thrill me was the hard cheese mixed in it was rather too strong in taste for me in some spots, but overall it was okay The veal saltimbocca was tasty with plenty of veal, mushrooms, and a delicious wine sauce. It was well worth the 26-dollar fee for the dish. Lastly, on the food, the complimentary bread was really on point, after living out closer to the West Coast for the last several years, this bread just hit the way Italian bread should. The wait staff for our table was two different servers. they worked well and they both checked in on us multiple times. The service was not rushed, and not slow either. The servers were both nice and pleasant, and we were offered up options on how the food could be prepared more to our liking. As to the ambiance, the place is on the smaller or intimate size, yet we didn't feel crammed in like in some other smaller places. It has an upscale looking bar when you walk in and there is a divider separating the bar area from most of the tables. Our host was very friendly and conversational (always a plus for us)! She guided us in our orders since we were all from out of town and gave us really good recommendations for portion sizes and dishes. Most of us ended up ordering either pasta (because Italian restaurant, duh!) or some sort of protein (salmon/chicken). We kind of filled up a little bit from the complementary bread and oil because it was our first meal but still made room for the huge portion of food we did end up getting. I didn't even get to the potato from being full from my salmon, bread, and order of salad. Everything was delicious though - including the red wine we ended up ordering! I had the luck of finding this place maybe 6 months ago. Since then I have been numerous times -- whenever I visit Boston I make sure to make the trip. I am always treated like family. The first time I went the wait was 1.5 hours so I wandered around federal hill and was so glad I waited. For me, this is the best Italian food I have ever had hands down. They also have amazing vegetarian options. Impossible to overstate how flavorful the food is but the way they treat you there is also so special. This place is ALWAYS busy so I strongly recommend a reservation -- and yes I have been twice in a single day for lunch, and dinner. This is probably my favorite restaurant of all time. I had the clam sauce linguine which kind of lacked flavor. They got my husband's order wrong.
