Being brought up Italian you have come to expect certain things when it comes to Italian cuisine (using the proper ingredients and preparing it properly). As a human who has eaten all of of one's life you also come to expect basic tenets of eating (should be edible). Unfortunately, Pane e Vino did not impress on the Italian side and failed miserably on the basics. The salad should not be swimming in dressing and the pasta should not be so hot as to be dangerous to eat. This is not an exaggeration - I burned my throat eating my gnocchi and brought it home in order to eat it. It all my years eating fresh gnocchi from my grandmother and mother (me as well), or eating out have I ever had to wait for my sauce to reach safe eating temperatures. NEVER. My wife even tried it (about 10 minutes after it was served) and could not eat it. If it was not for our waitress, this would have been 1 star. read more

First time here and I must say I was impressed with the taste, quality and selection of food. Had the duck confit with fig ravioli. Interesting flavors and very tasty however I found the fig ravioli added too much sweetness to the dish. My date has the scallops with risotto and that was excellent. Our sangrias were on point, the cheesecake dessert was perfect and expresso and cappuccino were done right. Not weak like many places. Definitely holds up to the coffee quality in Europe. One of those places on my list I've been meaning to get to - finally got here thanks to my aging little brother celebrating the ripe age of 32. Why not do it on the Hill? Found parking on the street which is always a plus but they do offer complimentary valet parking. It was a Monday night which I didn't know happened to be half off bottles or glasses of wine - why help myself, why don't I? We were seated in a corner booth which was nice as it lent itself to a more intimate setting for our party of 5. We started with calamari, mussels, arancini and the squash blossoms. All were very good. We all ordered different dishes - I went with the pork chop and boy oh not that little piggy sure was tasty - cooked perfectly and came with gnocchi nuggets and some cauliflower, I enjoyed it immensely. My bf loves a good veal parm and he said this was prob one of the best he's had. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, with the exception of the duck, my SIL liked the duck but wasn't crazy about the sweet tasting ravioli that came with it - the birthday boy said his steak was delicious. We ended with the bread pudding - wow, just wow. My brother didn't enjoy his cheesecake as much as he'd like but all in all, we had a great night here. Our server was awesome - super friendly and knowledgeable and gave us just enough attention without being overbearing. We discovered this place on a Reddit thread as one of the best Italian places to eat. The recommendations did not disappoint. Everything was phenomenal from the service to the food. Our server was attentive and paced our evening perfectly from the appetizers through dessert. The charcuterie board (small) was perfect for two people and could have probably fed another. I ordered the special that night, which was lobster ravioli, filet topped with lobster claw meat and broccoli. It was mouth watering. For dessert we ordered limoncello and their trio of cannolis. We chose Pane e Vino - Providence for the recent Mother's Day occasion at the very last minute, mostly because we heard how great their Gluten-free menu was. Due to it being Mother's Day & graduation season, we knew it would be hard to book a standard table, and it was. I have lived on the Hill for a long time and I have never visited Pane Vino. I was trying to go to Andinos because I had a craving for Chicken Francaise but their valet never came to park my car. I called Pane Vino and asked if they made Chicken Francaise and Matt the Manager answered the phone. He told me they don't offer it on the menu but asked me to hold while he want to ask the kitchen. After a short wait I was told that the kitchen was happy to accomodate my request. I showed up 2 minutes later and they had my table waiting. The service was perfect, the food was a 10/10 and I will be going back to sample the rest of the menu. The Crispy FontinaPotato Cakes might be one of the best things I have eaten made with potatoes. It was the perfect compliment to the lemon butter chicken goodness. Good food is one thing, good service really puts me over the top when it comes to restaurant recommendations. Service was well below what you expect. Long delays between ordering and checking back. Delay when they burned dessert and didn't tell us or comp is but left us sitting for 30 min. Long delays when they forgot extra silverware or even enough forks for the number of guests seated. Long delays when they went to serve a course and left out one diners dish each time. Oh and don't expect more than the initial glass of water as refills are also long or never offered. By the time we had left all the glassware was bone dry and had been for at least 20 minutes without us waiving anyone away. Food was fine. Not pro or con on the flavors. Most of the portions were good sized. Eggplant and salmon dishes were. But strangely the pasta dishes were a bit smaller sized than you expect for a main. They did have a number of gf options. This being Easter Sunday, I was lucky enough to call Pane E Vino to get a reservation because my kids liked what they saw on the menu. We were seated promptly and our waiter, Leo, had The type of personality that was spectacular. His professionalism exceeded expectations. I had the veal chop with roasted mushrooms and the most amazing potato cakes I've ever tasted. My son had the shrimp scampi, and my daughter had a lovely gnocchi dish that was baked in a clay pot. Went here with my girlfriend for a spontaneous date and was very happy with the service and the atmosphere. It isn't a five star establishment but it does have a very authentic and special feel to it. My girlfriend loved the art on the wall especially. When it came down to the staff we had an excellent waiter and he made our experience. The food was good as well, the portions were large and hard to finish (we brought both our meals home). We live out of state but been here twice, once with a large group, one just on a date last night. What a gem. We got the duck confit + fig ravioli both times and just died of happiness. The protein is so flavorful and tender, and encased isn't this delicate juicy shell of a light layer of melty fat and crisp which just dissolves on your tongue.....ahhhh.... and then the ravioli is such a perfect sweetness in the creamy sauce to balance everything out (you do have to like sweet in a dish). There were moments that were so perfect I just had to close my eyes... Spent a lot of the meal talking about how great it was :) Our server (I've forgotten her name, a lovely red-haired person) was absolutely delightful. Pane E Vino is a nice Italian restaurant on Federal Hill. I ordered the arancini as an appetizer and it was yummy! The apple cider sangria was just the right drink for a cold winter night. The lobster ravioli was a 10/10! I highly recommend it! The restaurant was a little bit tight in between tables, but that's just preference for myself. As Italian Restaurants go, Pane E Vino is nothing to write home about. The service (Josh, et al) was very attentive and professional, and the Monday night half-price wine is a nice touch, but the food we had did not merit raves by ant means. So, there were four of us, dining on a variety of dishes... two got the Veal Saltimboca. The main veal was tender, but way over sauced, so we could not really appreciate the flavor of the meat. They topped it with mozzarella, rather than the traditional provolone, which added to the smothering. BTW, The Arancini we had for an appetizer, WAS gently sauced, and they were notably delicious, with one per person being a nice appetite rev-ver. The one true fail was the linguini with clam sauce. The flavors were great!.... except there was so much sand in the dish that it ruined the meal for me. This was a clear indication to me that the clams were not purged, nor were they rinsed. That's just basic. What made it so sad was that I was truly craving linguini with clams in garlic, white wine, olive oil on our trip to New England. Oh, well .... I'll make it at home. read more

We had a great meal with only two complaints. We had asked for a different table because ours was right by the front door and it was cold and drafty. The response was "let me check our seating chart"...well that's reasonable. We came at 5:00 with a reservation and the place was less than half filled. In the end the only other option we were told was another table at the front door. Both were small tables for two. Ok then we had no choice. But then as more patrons were seated we saw parties of three seated at tables set for six and other parties of two seated at tables for four etc. Originally I had the review at 5 stars but now that I'm reading my own words here I took a star off. They basically insulted us with the seating situation and attitude. Next was the appetizer. Calamari. They thought they were doing us a favor by splitting it on two plates? Small portions, calamari wasn't crisp. A complete failure of Pane E Vino to deliver what should have been a signature dish. The entrees...duck confit and veal parm chop were great. The fig ravioli was awesome. Now that I think about it I can only give them three stars. A good meal but they just didn't stick the landing. The service was wonderful except for the seater who I almost wanted to have a word with, but I figured what would it accomplish after the fact? To the management...I'd work on a couple of things to have your place get 5 stars. Perhaps I should have complained at the time and maybe I would have received an apology and a cannoli, but it's not my style. read more

Absolutely amazing 10/10. Loved everything about this restaurant. For food we had the beef carpacci, burrata con prosciutto. I had the gnocchi and blood orange cosmo and a tiramisu. Everything was perfect. Our waitress was the sweetest soul (although I can not remember her name she wore glasses). First, Atwells Ave on Federal Hill is a great location, even just to stroll, with lots of shops, bars, restaurants and a very lively scene - we were off to a great start. The Pane e Vino staff was professional and welcoming. We were early for our reservation and were seated immediately in a nice corner of their beautifully lighted front room. Inside and outside dining is available. A highlight of the experience was our well-spoken and well-presented server who came across as a pro. The owner (or manager) also popped over to ask how we were enjoying our meal. Beer is available on tap and in bottles. We had 2 beers, one signature cocktail, shared an appetizer, ordered one Gnocchi alla Sorrentina and two Chittara Cacio e Pepe. All dishes held up - we were not starving - and felt like a solid attempt at authentic. We are very familiar with Italian cuisine, and just returned from a few days in Italy, so in that context, 7 out of 10 for execution. $140 including tax and tip = $45pp. If you're out for a special evening or just a nice dinner they do a good job. read more

So--I've eaten here number of times--love the place. Recently went for a "wine dinner " ($125 pp) and was really looking forward to it. Reception was cool --outside, mediocre white wine and apps. Met "Ciro" --wine rep from Italy. We conversed in Italian and all was good. We were seated for dinner--and here is where it went south. They missed me for the first course. No worries --corrected very easily. (No pane) We were given our first pour --4 oz.. Was ok--I was looking forward to the Buon Padre. Second course was was an al dente risotto. (oxymoron?) and our second 4 oz pour. Needed an additional glass of wine to wash this stuff down. The waiter informed me that there was only one (1) pour per course!! What?? This is a wine dinner--NOT a wine tasting. (What Italian family do you come from that drinks 4oz per course??!!) Manager called over (Dave) . Reluctantly he conceded to another pour. I'm embarrassed. Heading into the 3rd course--I had to beg again. Now, after less than 12 oz of wine total (a large glass) I was humiliated and done. We walked out. Wow! What a find. I came to this place after my dad found it and boy were we shocked. We walked into the incredible atmosphere and we were seated with an incredible waiter who was knowledgeable about the whole menu. The bread was amazing (which is always a good sign). I ended up ordering the Duck Confit with the fig ravilo. The flavors where perfectly balanced, in my opinion, with the sweetness of the fig pairing wonderfully with the fatty and salty flavor of the duck. Each bite has multiple layers of flavor that blend phenomenally with each other. I had the Pasta e Fagioli, la lasagna, and Carciofi con Veal. Pane e Vino's rendition of Pasta e Fagioli brought me back to my Nonna's kitchen. The lasagna was very good as well. However, I was a little disappointed to see Ricotta being used in the lasagne because the authentic recipes use a besciamella instead. It was to die for nonetheless. The artichokes were perfectly cooked and the Veal was juicy and tender. The dinner was topped of with two glasses of limoncello and some birthday cake. An unforgettable time was had by all! I went here for dinner this past Friday and we were able to call and make reservations ahead of time. We called an hour before coming, so I'm shocked we were able to be accommodated so quickly. We got there and our table was ready for us. We were sat in a corner section, I have to say the table was a little too wobbly for my liking but that's just me. Our server was definitely knowledgeable about the specials, she had beautifully presented the choices for the night without any difficulties and made awesome recommendations. Although I did notice she tried to up sell the most expensive choices but don't all high end restaurants? Food review: I ended up getting the gnocchi Quattro formaggi, which consisted of four cheeses in a tomato base sauce. The dish overall was extremely authentic and savory. I can definitely tell why this place was rated as a high end Italian restaurant. Summary. From the servers to the bathroom, everything was placed to theme the Italian restaurant. Servers dressed in black and white dress tops and dress pants. Bathrooms were vintage style with tiles and picture themed from the 80s Italy although could have been a little bit more cleaner.
