We visited for dinner three days ago. Both the outside and inside bars were packed. Inside seating seemed about half full. We were seated quickly by a cordial hostess at a deuce in the back corner of the upstairs section, along the exterior windows. The location seemed great; nice lighting, limited traffic, and a good view of both the restaurant and passers by outside. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be an ideal seat. But, more on that later.
We started with margaritas (of course!) to enjoy with our chips and salsa, while we looked over the menu. The drinks, chips, and salsas were all yummy. We weren't sure how large the entrees were, so we skipped the appetizers and went straight to entrees. We ordered braised pork enchiladas and fish tacos; we didn't order sides (more on that later, as well). When the entrees arrived, they were hot and looked wonderful. As we dug in, the taste was thoroughly enjoyable. The chile colorado sauce had a lovely depth with a hint of spice, and complemented the pork and potato filling well. The fish tacos were light, a hint of heat and smoke from the chipotle mayo, and a nice crunch from the slaw. The tortillas were quite thin though; they fell apart quickly as we handled the tacos. Overall though, the food was a big win.
Now to the big miss...the service. We had a very pleasant interaction with someone who described herself as "the manager" when we first sat down. But, our waiter was terrible.
We'd been seated about 10 minutes before our waiter stopped by. Not a big deal, because the aforementioned manager brought us water, chips, and salsas. So, we had nibbles and water to tied us over. But, we should have realized this was a red flag. The next red flag occurred when our waiter walked up. As he approached, he was looking at our table, but when he arrived he immediately looked above our table toward the patio. His eyes remained there throughout our conversation...as though something outside was far more interesting than we were. Nevertheless, we tried to be upbeat and pleasant as we gave him our drink order and thanked him. He walked away, still looking outside.
When he returned, he set our drinks on the table, immediately returned his gaze to the patio, then asked for our food order. He offered no information about the menu, didn't ask if we had questions. So, we gave him our entree selections. As mentioned earlier, we didn't realize sides needed to be ordered separately. And, since he offered no information about the menu, we only ordered entrees. Our waiter didn't seem to notice (or maybe didn't care)--perhaps he was so distracted by the patio--he simple acknowledged our order, looked down long enough to grab our menus, and then departed.
As we waited for our food, we noticed a table nearby with rice on a side dish rather than on the plate with entree, which made us start wondering if we'd mistakenly overlooked the need to order sides. We began looking for our waiter. But, for several minutes we couldn't spot him. So, we eventually asked a lady who delivered food to a nearby table. She told us to wait a minute then zipped away. We saw her go right to a waitress, talk at length with her, then head to the kitchen. We hoped she was alerting the waitress that we needed something. No idea though because the waitress headed off in the opposite direction of our table.
Eventually our food arrived, we ate and made do with our entrees. Then we waited. We could see our waiter tending to other tables--he was talking to them, looking at them, providing what looked like reasonably attentive service. But, he chose not to swing by to check on us, offer more drinks, make sure our food was to our satisfaction, or see if we needed anything. Eventually, we decided to just flag him down and ask for the bill. As he walked up, he once again looked right over us out onto the patio. He picked up our plates, acknowledged we wanted the bill then headed off. He passed through the section twice looking around each time, then seemed to suddenly remember our bill. He disappeared for a brief time then headed directly to our table. We quickly settled our bill and left, happy to leave the experience behind us.
The food was great. We really enjoyed the meal and will remember sides next time. But, we really hope for a better waitstaff experience next time. read more
