    XO Fried Rice

OK Canaan is the sister restaurant to OK Ryan on College Point Blvd with almost identical menus, but OK Canaan on Main St has a much larger dining room, accommodating much larger parties. In fact, my son was here a few months ago when a friend of his took up the whole place for his birthday party. The Taiwanese cuisine here is solid and I would make this a regular stop in our dinner rotation. Street parking in the neighborhood can be a little challenging but not impossible with some pay spots directly in front of the restaurant if you get lucky and spots around the corner by the Botanical Garden. Some of my favorite dishes that we always get are the 3 Cup Chicken and Tea Smoked Duck, both very flavorful poultry dishes. Other favorites of our family are the Stir-fried Cabbage & Chinese Bacon and the Braised Pork Rice, which comes with a tea boiled egg & pickled cabbage. My son always wants an extra Braised Pork Rice because he wants a whole bowl to himself. The menu is quite substantial and it will take quite a few visits to go through. I'm going to have to stop here for lunch sometime to try the Taiwanese Fried Pork Chop over rice.

The search for the best beef noodle soup continues, and Ok Canaan seemed like a promising candidate from Yelp reviews. My fiance and I arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday, and the restaurant was quite empty except for 1 other solo diner. We ordered the beef noodle soup ($15) and got our order within 10 minutes. The BNS here is just okay/mid at best. While it definitely tastes like a taiwanese beef noodle soup, it's lacking depth in the broth and in the flavor of the beef. The menu also notes that this is supposed to be spicy - we didn't pick up on any spice. To their credit, portions are hearty, beef is tender, and their pickled mustard greens are decent. I'm not the biggest fan of the noodle choice, which didn't quite pick up the flavors of the broth. Service is kind & efficient. Towards the end of our meal, we were provided with a small dessert, which was very much appreciated! Visa & Mastercard are both accepted.

Stinky tofu was solid even being not hot out of the fryers; just right stinkiness and the presented cabbage was nicely sour and a little spicy! After trying the street fair version, will have to try the full restaurant!

This is per my personal preference. Wanted to get dinner in Flushing with Taiwanese food and came across Ok Canaan due to the great reviews. However the dinner was a bit disappointing. The waiter was extremely friendly when I walked in and the entire time during dinner. Even though it was just her manning 4 tables and take outs she still managed to check in on us throughout the dinner. We ordered a couple of dishes. 1. The braised pork over rice was good however I felt like because the braised pork was pretty saucy there should've been more rice. There was very little pork and a lot of sauce as well. 2. The three cup chicken was kind of bland, didn't really taste the soy sauce / basil much. The flavor was very light. 3. The beef in black pepper was good but nothing mind blowing. 4. The duck blood soup was also a bit bland. 5. The sweet and sour fish fillet was a bit over powering. I felt like the sauce would've been better suited for pork and the fish would've been better with a lighter flavored sauce. 6. I think the chicken cutlet was pretty unique. It wasn't breaded, it was more so coated with something like the Korean rice crispy. The chicken also wasn't dry it was pretty moist, perfectly cooked but a little cold. Also I think it would've been better with some dipping sauce. If you are looking for a spot to eat, I'd still recommend coming just to try it out. Some dishes are pretty expensive but the lunch options are decently priced.

Ambiance could be better. Lighting was not great either but that might have been due to the scaffolding on the outside. Food though was on point. Items I ordered: - Stinky tofu - finally found a spot that makes it good like back in the day on Prince street called 66 Prince. - XO eggplant vermicelli - this dish was so flavorful and was delicious. I could eat this all the time. - Braised pork over rice - was so delicious as well but I still kept going back to the XO eggplant vermicelli dish. Tried the butterfly bean coconut drink - probably only thing I didn't really care for. Save your 7.50. Just tasted like coconut milk with coconut jello on the bottom. Also had shaved ice which was well worth it. I only had another person with me but this could easily have fed 4/5 people. It was huge. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.

When I tried this place and it had the same menu as OK Ryan, we didn't know that they were the same owner!! Food was just as good and place is larger at OK Canaan and ambience was more modern looking. Their braised pork rice was fire!! Highly recommend getting this if you're dining here. 3 cup chicken, XO Seafood with Egg Tofu Casserole, stinky tofu, smoke duck, and flys head were also super flavorful and delish. We also got this 4 herbal soup - this is def not for everyone as feels like it can revive you if you're sick and smell is very strong and medicinal. But we still enjoyed it!

We ordered several dinner dishes to go and were happy with all dishes we ordered. We liked that the meat dishes were all meats and not with half vegetables underneath to take up space. The flavors of all the dishes were very good. We really liked the food and looked forward to try their sister restaurant named Ok Ryan soon.

    Braised pork belly rice

Stumbled upon this no frills restaurant. We ordered the braised chicken leg over rice and the braised pork belly over rice. Both were really tender and flavorful and a great combo to eat on a fall afternoon. We love that the dishes came with vegetables and a cold cucumber appetizer. There was only one server but she was very patient and kind and always checked up on us. There's also a ramp inside so wheelchair/ stroller friendly! Not something you see often!

Located about a mile south of Downtown Flushing is the strangely named OK Canaan Taiwanese Gourmet. Ever on the lookout for Taiwanese comfort food, I drop in for dinner on a Sunday. Ambience: the interior is very .... Red. When we walked in at 7 PM, it was empty. This is not a good sign to be empty on a weekend during dinner time. Food: we ordered: Shredded Beef with chili - a staple of any self respecting Taiwanese restaurant. The beef was tender, but it could have been spicier. 3/5 Gua Bao - pork belly served in a steamed Bao. The Bao unfortunately looked like they reheated it . Instead of being moist and steaming, it had some cracks on it, suggesting it dried out. It's a shame because the pork belly was on point. 3/5 Fried Intestine - the other staple of Taiwanese restaurants. This was the star of the meal. Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside. 5/5 Paratha with Curry - I wasn't aware this was Taiwanese ... it's a grilled flat bread with a chicken curry dipping sauce. For those familiar with the Thai version of this, you will be disappointed. 3/5 Service - we waited unusually long for the food. The shredded beef and Paratha finally came out as we were almost done with dinner. This slowness is odd, considering we were one of three tables in the whole restaurant. The other table complained about the delays and canceled some of their order. From what I could tell, there was only one waitress and maybe one person in the kitchen cooking. TL/DR: I wanted to like this place. Other than the awesome fried intestines, the long wait and average quality of the food was a disappointment.

My eyes lit up when I saw the menu. The owners are from Tainan, Taiwan which is often consider the culinary capital of Taiwan with many iconic traditional dishes and flavors. The restaurant is spacious but it does not have many table seatings (3-5 tables?). When we came it wasn't busy so we got a spot but we did see many people coming in for their takeout orders. The oldies they play at the restaurant take me back to my childhood. The place is structured very interestingly where it's an open kitchen so you can actually easily see how they prep the food in the back. We ordered: - oyster omelette pancake - mung wort kueh (4 pieces) - danzai noodle - mixed spice platter The oyster omelette was the highlight! The bottom is crispy and they use a generous amount of oysters. It's the most authentic oyster pancake I've had in the east coast. Alot of other "Taiwanese spots" don't make it correctly. I also love the mung wort kueh (hard to find places that sell this) - it's a fun snack to take to go. It's a savory mochi bun with shredded radish as the main ingredient. The danzai noodle is an iconic dish from Tainan. Its main star consists of the one shrimp and the marinated ground braised pork. Although I would prefer the dry version but they serve the soup version here. The broth tastes very clear and clean, doesn't feel like it's dosed with salt and MSG. We got the mixed platter - an iconic street food in Tainan is 滷味 (Lou Wei) which is consist of different ingredients tossed and braised in a soy-based spice sauce. They have a nice selection of Lou Wei options and the platter we got had pork belly, duck neck, tofu skin, and lotus roots. The spicy duck neck can be intimidating for those that have never had it but it is fun to eat. There are so many items on there that I can't wait to try. For first timer, definitely get the oyster pancake and Luroufan! I can't wait to come back and try more of the traditional Taiwanese dishes. They also have frozen dumplings that you can buy to go. 50 pieces for $28-$30 is a pretty good price!

Of course, we expect the school to choose only the highest quality restaurants to order delivery from, and yes, it was quite good, considering that it was delivery that was lugged all the way from Flushing and ultimately had to be reheated in the microwave. Come this past weekend, we decided to plan a whole day trip to Flushing to visit Flushing Meadows Corona Park and eat some good Taiwanese and Chinese food. We search Yelp and we come across this place, OK Ryan. The restaurant is small and cozy, but packed a big bite. We had Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, Pork Chop lunchbox, Oyster Pancake, Pork Intestine Vermicelli, Taiwanese Sausage, and Golden Red Bean Pancake. Everything authentic and delicious. Oyster Pancake was probably the best I've had for a very long time - it was filled with oysters, not too doughy, not too saucy. Beef noodle soup had excellent depth of flavor and the meat was tender and delicious. We ordered way too much food and took a bunch of it home. Found out that the restaurant was cash or Venmo only. So I take out my phone and Venmo the bill. But wait, my Venmo app did not register OK Ryan as a new restaurant. In fact, it said I had paid this restaurant several... times.... before. Cue the freak out. Who hacked my Venmo account to buy Taiwanese food?? OK, so obviously, OK Ryan and OK Canaan are one and the same. Good for delivery, but now we know, much better in person. We'll try the real OK Canaan next time.

We came on a weekend dinner and surprisingly there was a lot of people before 5:15pm and no one really afterwards. I really appreciate all the Taiwanese decorations in their restaurants and the circular tables which I haven't experienced in a bit. In general, their menu was pretty amazing as it had all the Taiwanese hits that one could want and I seriously couldn't choose! - Braised Pork Rice Lunchbox - Absolutely loved the vegetables in this dish, it really reminded me of the the railroad lunch boxes you get in the train station. I think the braised pork was okay as there wasn't a lot of meat and it was a bit heavy on the fat. - Taiwanese Chicken Cutlet - I was a bit confused on first look of this chicken because they had some rick crackers stuck to the outside of it. I'm not sure if that's the way it's supposed to be but at least the flavors were spot on as it was ultimately crispy on the outside with a bit of spice and juicy on the inside. Probably the best dish of the night. - Pork Intestine Vermicelli - I've never had this dish before in the states so I was interested to see how this would turn out and it was actually a lot better than I thought. The flavors were pretty on point and the cleaned out the intestine well. I probably wouldn't order the lunchbox again, and although no dish extremely WOW-ed me, their breadth of Taiwanese dishes is pretty amazing and I will be back!

I ordered the beef noodle soup and the popcorn chicken. The beef noodle soup came out first--the bowl was massive, though the portion itself felt just okay for the size. The popcorn chicken was very tasty, but what confused me was that it wasn't hot when it arrived. It felt like it had been sitting out for a bit. My guess is they prepared the chicken first and held it while waiting for the soup so both dishes could come out together. Overall, the flavors were very good. Their Fried Popcorn Chicken is also quite yummy. Mince Pork Over Rice is hot or miss for some reason. With that said, I feel that their stir fry dishes falls a bit short compared to some of their competitors. Two of my favorite dishes, Fly Heads (too greasy) and Sautéed Kidney (overcooked), are somewhat underwhelming. I am also not a fan of their Beef Noodle Soup and Thread Noodle Soup. Taiwanese pork chop and Taiwanese fried chicken cutlet both came with minced meat, veg and 1/2 egg. Made them combos: over-rice dish + appetizer (options are highlighted in yellow) =$15. Not bad. Our picks were Beef stuffed flatbread - a scallion pancake with filling, and Pan fried pork dumplings -juicy with a crispy bottom. Braised beef soup noodles was a big serving. Salty pork and veg fried rice - withtiny pork pieces, salty as expected but not overly. Good portions, good prices.

So if you don't speak much Chinese then go in and order and they cook it up fast. They accept credit card and cash for the same price. It was a very cold Friday after Thanksgiving night and it was empty. The food was cooked up fast and it was all flavorful and a great price. If you order a $10 dish and an appetizer you can make it a combo for $15. The portions are big and my friends and I all enjoyed our dinner and leftovers for the weekend. Highly reccomend the pork chop over rice, braised pork belly (comes with quail eggs) and the beef with pepper over rice. Definitely coming back here again to try other dishes. The place was spacious and clean and bright.

Price has been increasing over the years, cash only, and deposit for the hot plate when you dine in (you get your deposit back after you return the plate). Service is fine, though be wary of getting your change back. There were at least 5 times the cashier (both guy and girl) left out a dollar, and no they were not apologetic about it. You don't come here for ambiance, but you are signing up for a no frills meal that will sizzle in front of you and will always gather onlookers as they pass by. There are two flavors for gravy you can choose, mushroom vs black pepper. It also comes with eggs, some veggies, noodles, salad with a heavy dollop of thousand Island dressing, and a small cup of cold fragrant green tea.

Tucked away in the heart of Queens' bustling Taiwanese enclave, this spot is a hidden gem that punches way above its weight in taste and value. In fact, it was so hidden, we almost couldn't find the place! Got the sizzling sirloin steak with mushroom sauce as well as the sizzling chicken steak with black pepper sauce. Go with the black pepper sauce. It is much better. They charge a $10 deposit fee on your receipt which will be returned to you after you are finished and return their trays to them. Keeps folks honest and prevents sticky fingers from walking out with their iron hot plates. Prices are really reasonable for steak. There was also a lot of other interesting stuff on the menu that I can't wait to try next time.
