There's a great variety of food here, although I like their sandwiches the best. The atmosphere is better than almost all of the restaurants. Regulars will know what they like and don't like on the menu and the flavors are different enough that you really are taking a chance every time you order something new. This restaurant really should be two $$ on yelp. If you're getting a meal with a drink it's almost certainly going to be more than $10. read more

We stopped here for breakfast. Fun! Good coffee. I had the yogurt plate and it came with good fruit and fairly decadent toast, but it was terribly good. My husband loved his egg dish. But my daughter went for Shoaf's Toast and holy cow. Split that with someone. The three of us couldn't finish it. She just kept cleaning her stupid drink machine for 30 more minutes. In the Durham-Chapel Hill area, how can you have on a spring training game and CNN when it's MARCH MADNESS?? Oh, and not only that, but she kicked us out after the large group left because tech they had closed at 9, but it was not even a hey i'll give you 5 more min sort of deal. Nosh is one of the better reasonably priced eateries in Durham. I have been there many times and I am always happy with the service and delicious plates. I had something off of the special board called a "Cauliflower Steak", which cauliflower sliced horizontally and grilled, with risotto and asparagus. I was incredibly pleased with this creative item. I want to like this place. The food is good and they are animal rescue supporters. But after yesterday I'll never go back. I ordered the lunch sandwich special and asked the owner, who was running the register, what kind of bread it was on, because I am allergic to sunflower seeds. She said wheat. I said whole wheat? and she said yes. So our food comes and first my companion finds a piece of plastic in her none-too-fresh fruit salad. Then my mouth starts tingling - yep, on closer inspection there are sunflower seeds and poppy seeds and who knows what else in the "whole wheat" bread. I asked the owner, "you said this was whole wheat, right?" She said yes. I said, "But there are sunflower seeds in it." She said, "Yes, our wheat bread has sunflower seeds". I said, "I'm allergic to sunflower seeds - that's why I asked what kind of bread it was." She looks blank and offers me a Benadryl (!) I told her I didn't want a Benadryl, I didn't even want a new sandwich or my money back, I wanted her to describe her bread as multi-grain, since that's what it is and that's what alerts allergic people. She just stared at me. Adding insult to injury, when I looked at the bill I saw that she charged us 25 cents each for a cup of water. read more

Nosh is a Duke campus deli type restaurant with a great selection of food. Everything our group of 5 ordered was delicious and plentiful...all at a reasonable price. If you are in to animal rescue, they offer a unique way to view pets available for adoption. read more

This is a cute cafe. Great food and friendly service. I love that they give you a picture of a shelter dog or cat to take to your table -- that is how the food runners find your table. This is a busy lunch spot since it is close to Duke Hospital. The also serve breakfast, dinner and have shakes and other snacks! read more

I LOVE this place. I used to visit here weekly when I lived in the area and it hasn't changed a bit. The service is exceptional, the pancakes are to die for and the coffee is strong. The scrambled eggs are very good, too. Keep in mind that the breakfast potatoes are curried, which should be noted on the menu (idk, maybe it is and my boyfriend missed it) but that can make them not so good to some people (I still thought they were tasty but I prefer my Nosh carbs in the form of pancakes.) read more

Nosh is on food points, which is great for Duke students who want to order in. They have great, light food for those days you don't feel like eating a heavy meal. That being said, I ordered a the Rascal's Razzamatazz burger, which had caramelized onions, lots of sauteed peppers, and tomato sauce on it. I really liked it! I've experienced Nosh as both an individual diner and a catering customer. I've always enjoyed their food, love the energetic decor, and adore the staff. Whenever I used them to cater lunches, they were always on time and had our order correct. Since I've moved I don't know if this still is true, but when I lived in Durham they sponsored local live music artists on Friday evenings. I was also impressed by their innovative idea of supporting local animal rescue by using ads for adoptable pets as table identifiers for bringing out orders. Their wraps and cous cous are my favorites on the regular daily menu, and their Friday crab cakes are my overall favorite. Our boss would sometimes choose a Friday to order our monthly working lunch for the office just so we could enjoy them! The only negative I can think of is that parking can sometimes be a challenge, but never an insurmountable one. read more

Sandwiches are fine. There's nothing unique about them. It seem a little mass produced. The restaurant is not particulary cosy. If you are after something more sophisticated I would go to Toast instead. For me its not about quantity, but quality. read more

I like that it's close to my house and the coffee is consistently good. I'm not the hugest fan of the food, it's fine but nothing special. Whenever we get catered, there's usually one ingredient in the sandwich that I am not crazy about, but I am usually quite particular so maybe that's just me. To start the food at Nosh is really good, but the bakery items are the real celebrity. All of their main dishes are good and generally healthy, made with local ingredients. I've had Nosh on several occasions: once take out, once ordered, and several times catered. On no occasion has it knocked my socks off, but I can say that it is...good food. Yes, it's tasty, but I mean "good" more in that it sort of carries a "Whole Foods" sort of feel, take that how you will. The TRY Nosher with chicken salad, potato salad, and egg salad was good, though I would've loved more of that flatbread or pita thing that it came with, because I ended up with an excess of the salads, which left me wanting water. I would give them 4 stars for food, however their staff can be really rude. I call for delivery often and the most recent time the woman who answered was practically yelling into the phone and her frustration was apparent. She was not focused on taking my order because I had to repeat myself several times at many points during the order. I ended up just canceling it because the woman was so short with me and rude I honestly didn't want to give the restaurant my business. As much as I enjoy their sammies, they've lost my business. I like the food at Nosh -- a lot. But what's this new policy of charging 25 cents for tap water? They say "it's for a cup, not for water" but that's a flimsy excuse. Update: Owner, who is a really decent person, emailed answer to my query. She says the cups are best for ecology but not cost-efficient unless customers pay. I'm all in favor of green living, but I still don't think charging your customers is the way to go about this. Even movie chains will give you a free cup of tap water. Had a quick takeout order to bring to my wife and me to eat at Duke Hospital while she recovered from the birth of our third child. I placed my order online and was impressed how quickly they had everything hit, ready and packed for pickup. The turkey burger was great and so were the sweet potato fries. I have mixed feelings about this place. It has been sort of hit and miss. I have had some great brunches here, but again some lunches were awful. I have noticed that they prices have gone up little too much lately. One more note - their orange juice that you can get from the beverage section is NOT freshly squeezed (it looks like that the way they package it, they put that in a see through plastic cup). What I had was good (Faye's Turkey, Owney's Crunchy Chicken, and Pasta Salad). Actually I also tried a little of the Potato Salad and it was bland (not bad, but Pasta Salad is much better). Everything tasted fresh and top quality. They have a unique and larger than usual drink selection (including beer). I was worried at first, because they were crowded; but they move fast. I was impressed at how quickly we ordered and then received the food. NOSH is clean and well managed. The manager was friendly and active. Some other reviewers have mentioned NOSH is pricey; I would not disagree... but, I have worked in restaurants and I know that clean and well-managed places like this are where I want to eat. Ok- so let me start by saying I love the owner of this place and I think this is a good establishment and it has been for years. However today was ridiculous. We show up and place our order. There's maybe a handful of people there. No issues placing order, we pay and sit down. Then we wait and wait...and wait. It's been almost 25 minutes and my baby starts getting fussy. I ask staff to check on food. She asks me what we ordered. We see lady talk to cook and cook is confused. Not sure what happened to the ticket that described the $27 worth of food we ordered. Finally our food is brought out- not how we ordered it (dry burgers too because they just made them well done to be safe I guess?) I was so irritated because my window of time was shot to hell because now my baby is awake and ready to be fed too. I wish the manager or person in charge today had asked us how we wanted our food- not just assumed because our ticket was lost. Or offered to bring us something for waiting so long??? No apology is not okay. The owner is so sweet and if she was there I imagine it would have been handled very differently. Good food but not great if you don't have an hour or so to spare. read more

Solid food, fairly quick service, and very close to Duke. Came for lunch around 1 pm and there was a short line. You place your order at the counter, seat yourself and they bring your food over. We ordered the P.W.'s Pepperoni and a slice of chocolate peanut butter pie. The 12" pizza had some portobello mushrooms sprinkled throughout it. Nothing too special, but not bad. The chocolate peanut butter pie was delicious - topped with plenty of whipped cream, drizzled with chocolate syrup and had a delightful graham cracker crust. We saw someone with the flapjacks. They're not kidding around - those things are bigger than your face! You will definitely leave full and content (especially if you order dessert). read more

Wow, the first day I ate at Nosh for lunch, I was thrilled to find such a gem in Durham. I had thought that I gave up interesting and creative meals when I moved to the south but Nosh proved me wrong. The ambiance is fun and eclectic and the clerk and other waitstaff were surprisingly friendly. Most of the entrees come with a side of some sort. I had the coo-coos which was mind blowingly good. I wish they would sell it by the pound. I have since come back multiple times for just the coos-coos. I also had a burger, which was apparently made of higher quality beef than I normally eat. I would definitely recommend this place for anybody looking for a quick lunch or dinner. read more

Ate dinner there last night and breakfast this morning. Had southwest salad and corn chowder for dinner. Hubby had the turkey burger, said it was fantastic, but he didn't like the cole slaw, said it was too bitter for him, but he tends to be a cole slaw snob. Everything was fresh and super tasty. We got in the door just before a big rush, if we had been at the back of the line we would have probably gone elsewhere. But now that we've had the food, it is worth the wait! They did a pretty good job of getting through the line quickly, and food was flying out of the kitchen. Breakfast was just as yummy, I had egg and cheese biscuit and hubby had a blueberry scone. His was the best scone we've ever had and mine was so big he ate the other half. But it was so good I wish I could have eaten the whole thing! They have outdoor seating as well, and seem to be pet friendly with their rescue dog order system and water bowl outside. They also have some very interesting art and a huge amount of board games to enjoy. We will definitely eat there again next time we are in Durham. read more

We ate at a lot of amazing restaurants in Durham, so this one was just ok. We stopped in for a quick lunch on a Saturday afternoon, and waited in line for 10 or 15 minutes to order. I had the Lancie's leaves salad, with crunchy chicken. It was served in a stainless steel mixing bowl that was very tippy. I had to hold it with one hand while I used my fork with the other. The salad was pretty bland, and although the chicken was a good texture, the combination wasn't anything special. My companions split the BLT which looked good, but they reported was kind of dry. Certainly not a bad meal, but if you are passing through Durham there are other restaurants that will knock your socks off for a similar price. read more

So being the foodie that I am, I have slight obsession with Man Vs Food. Whenever we do road trips we try to stop at a place mentioned on the show and see if it is as good as Adam claims. The place reminds me of a Panera or Starbucks...you know, the chain feeling. I was hoping for more Mom and Pops establishment in the south so I was a bit disappointed. My meal was not that bad. I enjoyed the eggs but I wish there was more "egg" than wrap. I ordered the Maggie's Scramble: Three eggs with caramelized onions, peppers, portobello mushrooms and asiago cheese in a warm tortilla topped with roasted red pepper sauce. with their house taters on the side. I did not know that it was going to be wrapped in a sundried tomato tortilla thingy. My husband got the Robinson Burger: Half pound of Angus ground chuck with white cheddar, maple pepper bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo on an old fashioned bun. He said it was alright. We most likely will not be trying another one of these places....not hating..just not our style. read more
