Mel's is a great place for lunch. The staple sandwiches (chicken salad, BLT, veggie) are all delicious, especially the chicken salad and BLT. There are frequently specials as well for those who like more variety, though sometimes they sell out before lunch is over (if you check Mel's Facebook page before it opens each day, you can see what will be on the menu). The sandwiches come with a small side - the broccoli salad is my favorite. There are usually some small dessert options on the menu as well, such as cobblers and mini-pies for example, and they are consistently good. The atmosphere is pleasant and the staff are very friendly. The food is a bargain. The only drawback is the limited parking. Sometimes during the busy part of the lunch hour the back lot is full, so I have to park down the street. But it's always worth it. read more

We ate here for lunch today! The sloppy joe and deviled eggs were so tasty. My group tried all three desserts which were crazy good. The banana pudding is the best I've ever had in my life and the key lime was perfect. I didn't love the cobbler as much, but two out of three is pretty good. Cute, local vibe. Laid back with nice staff. I hope this place sticks around. Breakfast would be awesome here. I bet they could create some amazing breakfast sandwiches. read more

I split the tomato pie and the chicken salad sandwich with my mom and it was more than enough food, and probably less than $20 with iced tea! it's definitely comfort food, but not so heavy you feel gross after. Oh my! If I could give more than 5 stars I would! I had the veggie sandwich and it was literally the best I've had! They put guac on their's and it's good guac too! Alfalfa sprouts, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions (just enough to add flavor but not too many to overpower) ... I can't even remember every item on there! It was served on delicious bread! You can choose from 3 (maybe 4) unique, tasty sides: deviled eggs, man candy, or Asian pasta salad. They only had 5-6 main items to choose from, which I appreciate because a good place doesn't need a plethora of mediocre dishes to choose from. The menu changes regularly based on what's fresh and available to them. They have indoor/outdoor seating; parking is tight but at least they have it! Being the frugal person I am - the sandwich, side and tea -was under $8!!! I can't wait to go back and try something new! My grandmothers were both amazing cooks. I remember lunches at their kitchen tables as a kid growing up in the rural South in the 60's: meat loaf, BLTs, maybe some leftover banana pudding or a fried apple pie from last night's dinner. That's what Mel's Commissary in Carrboro, NC feels like - lunch in my grandmother's kitchen. A limited menu of southern standbys and a daily special. All delicious. An excellent BLT and a heaping spoonful of banana pudding made my day. Unlike grandma's kitchen, Mel's is only open for lunch five days a week. Everything I ate here was amazing. Mel's melt (the special) was perfect flavor and texture-wise. I love that Mel's sauce. And we tried all four of the sides. Deviled eggs were solid and classic. Man candy was two delicious bites of bacon and sausage. Broccoli salad was yummy, fresh, and a little sweet with a creamy dressing and dried cranberries. And I thought the Asian noodle salad was going to be a little bit boring, but it has a good amount of flavor and just the right level of spice. Also, the cranberry bread pudding was soooo good and not too sweet. If they'd had the banana pudding, we would have tried that, too, but we didn't need to because the portions are generous and we had more than enough food as is. Plus, to get a large sandwich and side for $8 or less is unbeatable. You order at the counter here, and we did take out, but there was plenty of seating if we'd wanted to stay. And I was glad to see high chairs, which is always good for toddler wrangling. Lovely, friendly folks cooking and serving, too. read more

Really good lunch spot. The Asian noodle salad was perfect. The veggie sandwich was also pretty good. The sandwich would have been even better with a little cheddar cheese on there, in my opinion. Maybe make it an option? My only complaint is that they toasted the bread and it wasn't advertised as toasted. I really don't like toasted sandwiches with cold ingredients, and I definitely would have asked for it untoasted had the description mentioned it. Fortunately, it was fairly lightly toasted, but it still detracted from the sandwich for me. That's something that should be listed in the description or they should ask when you order. Otherwise, really good. I'd recommend it and I'd go back for sure. read more

Food freshly made by a great team. I went nuts on their gluten free bread! They get it local, and as they put it, "we found it's the only kind that stays together when we make our sandwiches." Seriously, this was music to my ears because I am always the one feeling deprived when my friends can order normal bread and I'm stuck trying to explain a lettuce wrap. Not only did they HAVE gluten free... it's DELICIOUS. Now the sandwich - mm, mm, mm...!!!! Ordered a turkey sandwich with muenster. Overjoyed to have Mel's in Carrboro! The food is delicious and so reasonably priced (hearty sandwich and side for $6.75). The BLT (dare I say it??) rivals Merritt's and the veggie sandwich is healthy and satisfying. Of course, the deviled eggs are phenomenal and the banana pudding is great as well (and $1.99, unbelievably). I've already been here a few times and know that I'll be back many more. I dream of Mel's tomato pie: its flaky buttery crust, its warm blend of cheese and tomato. The side salad is served with these tiny little crunchy croutons, which I chase around my salad bowl. This is simple Southern food at its best, highlighting seasonal ingredients in an unpretentious way with great prices and portion sizes generous enough to fill you up for lunch but not so big they put you to sleep.
