Came here with a friend for lunch and had a great time. The interior is gorgeous and feels simple yet upscale. You can order on your phone, so not much to say about service but I didn't have any problems. I got a sandwich that I built and it was delicious and well toasted, so did my friend. Super affordable also! I understand that you can build pizzas for dinner and it becomes a cool wine bar, would loveee to come back for that. Overall: cool, classy yet casual place in chapel hill to get affordable food and chat with friends over a drink! read more

We walked in, hungry and excited about the pics we saw online. We turned around and walked back out because they said they have no physical menu only a QR code I'd have to use my phone to see. No thanks! Cannot comment on the food as we never saw any. Can comment the service was lacking to not offer any other option but the electronic one. Will NOT be going back. read more

You won't see my food in the pictures because I had to take it to go and eat it in the car. I will say my sandwich was delicious though, but they apparently lost my original order or gave it to someone else. There were 3 of us on our "ticket" - you scan a QR code and order from your phone and you include info on where you are sitting. My beer came out speedy, but my husband's only made it to him after our friend went up and asked about it (that was our second attempt, first time we asked a server walking by). My husband and son's food came out in a normal amount of time and at least 45 minutes later and after asking 3x mine still had not arrived. So we finally got someone to help, who gave me a paper menu to check off my original order and then she asked the kitchen to make mine first. At that point everyone we were with was finished their meals and we had somewhere to be so I just ate my food in the car. Seems like a cool spot, and maybe we just got unlucky, but it doesn't seem like their ordering and serving process is working well. read more

I waited over 1.5 hours for a single drink! You have to order and paid in advance through your phone...which is extremely frustrating especially when the bartenders and waitstaff keep disappearing to the back. They didn't seem at all focused on getting drinks or food to customers who had been waiting absurd amounts for 1 draft beer. There were no cups for water, and the water dispenser was empty. It felt like the waitstaff was hiding. I will go somewhere else for drinks in Chapel Hill next time. read more

I love this place! First of all, the ambiance is amazing. Whether you come on a sunny afternoon or on a late night weekday, the vibes are consistently cozy, chill, and comforting. It's feels upscale, but so very homey. I ordered a turkey and ham on sourdough bread with spinach, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, and avocado. The sandwich came out to be $11.75 which was pretty pricey for a sandwich. But, I did get a lot of stuff on it so it makes somewhat sense. Also, the avocado is not extra, so you know I have to get that! The sandwich came nice and hot and deliciously toasted. It had the perfect crunch and all of the flavors meshed well together, despite all of the things I got. They filled up the sandwich and it was hard to bite since it was so big. Which is a good thing! Overall, I would probably come back if I'm really craving a nice crunchy sandwich. read more

I came here on a Sunday afternoon with a larger group of friends! The first thing that stood out to me was the cute vibe of the place. It's a very dark, cozy restaurant. The ordering system was odd. You have to create an account, order your food, and enter payment info via the website. I wasn't a huge fan of that system but it was definitely unique. Looking further into the menu, I noticed a lack of variety. This place is mainly sandwiches, wraps, salads. It reminds me of a bougie Subway. The sandwich I ordered was good, but it was something that I could've easily made at home. As for the parking, there's parking in the adjacent garage for free on Sunday's. Overall, I'm not really a huge fan due to lack of variety from their menu but I'd consider returning to try the drinks as the restaurant has a great atmosphere. read more

Lovely sandwiches and atmosphere! The first time I came, the ordering system made me sweat a little. Nonetheless, I prevailed and was rewarded by a lovely sandwich. I always get heavy toast and the roof of my mouth becomes a victim for the next week. I've been on a sour-savory foods kick recently and have found an intense love for banana peppers as well. I tried recreating an italian sub but there was too much meat. I would recommend the general principle of it, for sure. read more

Best sandwiches in Chapel Hill, creating your own is a great idea. The service and ambiance was amazing!

Quite possibly the most fun restaurant I've ever been to! The concept is so unique in that you basically build a sandwich/wrap/salad a la carte straight from your table. I got the tuna salad sandwich on toasted sourdough and all of the ingredients were great! The tuna salad wasn't too mayonaisey and was seasoned perfectly. There are many seating options with indoor, outdoor downstairs, and outdoor upstairs. The outdoor upstairs was perfect in cool fall weather because the buildings blocked the breeze and it was very sunny. There are also large tables for big parties. I will definitely be going back for the vibes and the affordability (my sandwich was $7.75 and very large) read more

Average sandwich and salad - not bad for sure but nothing special either. All service via your smartphone. There is no wait staff. Ambiance is terrible - feels like the place is still under construction with half finished walls and paint jobs. read more

Really good sandwiches, QR code menu with little service/interaction from staff, can/bottle drinks. It was dead when we went and the service was very slow. When I asked about our order after about 25 minutes, the person behind the bar went and brought it to us. It's got a nice vibe and the food was great. I'd probably order ahead for takeout in the future. read more

Great outdoor seating here. Get to order and pay on your phone so that was easy. Good sandwiches and great atmosphere

So good! And at a decent price. I personally think 4oz of meat is a good portion, so it's nice splitting that up between two types of meat. I love how you can customize your order since I don't like cheese usually and deli foods usually always have it - the option to leave it out is just one extra thing that made my experience eating here great. The 50 cent cookie is also an incredible perk that I take advantage of every time I come here! Ive been here a few times now and I love their beer selection as well. I love lighter beers and ciders, and their selection is definitely complementary to my preference. Ive never had their wines but I've seen a decent selection of those as well. The inside seating can get a bit loud in the evenings but the outdoor seating is always a great option. If you go at the right time, you can catch sunset as well! It's a great location to just chat with friends while eating something that is not too heavy. read more

I've been coming to Tru for all of my grad school years so far. It's great when you need to get some work done in the early afternoon but want to slide into getting some wine later on. Their sandwiches are great with good quality ingredients and on the affordable end of entrees. There's plenty of seating and outlets for working that transition well to gathering space for happy hour purposes. I love their ambiance and decor - it stands in stark comparison to the grungier bar options on Franklin Street and in Carrboro. Once they start serving cocktails (at either 5 or 5:30 I think) you must try the hummingbird! read more

I was visiting my friends at UNC and they took me here for lunch. We ordered on the self ordering tablets and this was my order: Wheat tortilla + tuna salad + lettuce + tomato + cucumber +avocado + alfalfa sprouts + sun dried tomato + pesto This was hands down one of the best wraps I have had in my life! My friend recommended dinner here, given that she knows how picky I am with food. Thank goodness I trusted her judgement on this one! Tru reminded me of Parker & Otis in Durham, except they don't sell all the cute novelty items that Parker & Otis does. What they DO have, though, is a comprehensive menu of delicious sandwiches, salads, beer and wine. Everything is customizable and made to order. For about 8 bucks, I got a grilled ham and pesto sandwich on sourdough bread. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Though I wish the service could have been a bit faster, I loved everything about this place. I can definitely see myself coming here again. read more

Always good and reasonably priced. The only thing I wish they had is hummus and a few more choices in color for vegetables. That being said, I still eat here often. Nice atmosphere also. I definitely recommend it. read more

Awful. Came here tonight at 7:45pm with my wife and 5 other UNC Chapel Hill Med school residents. We will never return. I was able to get my wrap order in at 7:50 but none of the rest of our group was able to. We were told the system would refresh in 15 minutes and the rest of my party could order. At 8:30 the system finally came online again after a lot of stressing that I would be the only one of us who could eat dinner tonight. One of our group left just before this to go home and eat dinner, as he had given up hope he would ever be able to order. My wrap arrived at 8:45 along with those that remained of my group. My wrap (tortilla size) was half the size of my wife's and one of our group received a completely incorrect order (ordered roast beef, Turkey, and ham, and received just roast beef). We were told nothing could be done other than a refund because the kitchen was now closing. To all Med school students and residents...avoid this restaurant if you would like to eat any food after a long day of work. You will leave hungry and they simply don't care. read more

I love Tru! The sandwiches here are excellent and made-to-order, so you can add as many meats, veggies, and cheeses as you'd like in however large or small a quantity you'd like. The cookies are also amazing. There is rooftop patio seating and there are also large and small tables inside. I prefer sitting outside because it's so beautiful this time of year, but the decor is also very cute inside. It's a nice place to study, as well. read more

I wasn't sure what to think of this place, and my opinion changed constantly with each step and new find. Very cool exterior and outdoor seating. Go indoors and there's chill music playing, and not much else in terms of bells and whistles on the walls. There wasn't much in terms of guidance for us either, being our first time. A server eventually guided us to the iPads to place our order - cool, high-tech, but also detached and impersonal, but otherwise appropriate for today's crowd. You pick your seat and enter your order, and it was a little confusing on how to pay... I guess either you go up to them or they eventually come find you for payment before they assemble your order. Word to the wise: exact change or credit cards only. I was a bit peeved that your drink and chips order is literally a can of soda and a bag of chips that you pick up yourself on the other side. I grabbed a napkin assuming one wouldn't be brought to us, and I was right. The only reason this is getting four stars vs three is the food. The sandwiches are nothing short of amazing. I got a sourdough salami/pepperoni, and I loved (and finished) every bite of it. Though high tech and an atmosphere fitting an upscale university eatery, the impersonal touches rubbed me the wrong way. read more

Fantastic classy, yet convenient lunch spot in Chapel Hill! I came here every now and then as a UNC student and now I frequently return when I'm with coworkers or friends. The ambiance is up-scale and great for all seasons due to the lovely patio and richly decorated interior. While there isn't a huge variety of menu options, that's the beauty of this place! You create a wrap/salad/sandwich on an iPad to your specific pallet and your selection will be fresh and delicious. I highly recommend getting your order lightly toasted. It's fun to really customize your order without seeming high-maintenance to a a server. You usually interact pretty minimally with servers, so no complaints there. I've also enjoyed wine and cheese boards here. Not to mention, try the wide tequila flight selection if you're feeling wild! Overall, I've been here for work lunches, homecoming events, group project meetings, birthdays, etc. and it's always great! read more

My friends and I only got wine, but the sandwiches looked very delicious. The best part of wine bar, was the atmosphere. My friends and I sat in comfy chairs, under an umbrella outside. I used to love going to Tru; I had been a faithful patron since my undergrad years. However, I was greeted with disdain as soon as I walked in for my prior visit on 11/24/21 at 7:00 pm. I expressed (respectful) confusion regarding the new ordering system, and was treated as if I was being aggressive by the young man behind the bar as he immediately when on the defensive. .....ok I go up to the bar later and asked if I could order a cocktail since I didn't see them in the app ordering system. Again, ol' boy starts being defensive and some young woman behind him rolls her eyes and then comes up and tells me in a huffy that they currently don't have cocktails. ....alright?? I could not help but notice that no one else in the establishment was receiving this treatment for asking standard questions. Also could not help but notice that I was the ONLY Black person present. Let me spell it out. RACIST. read more

TRU is one of my favorite spots in Chapel Hill. It offers a wonderful overall experience with delightful staff, a welcoming atmosphere to all, and delicious food and drinks at an affordable price. I'm always impressed at how TRU can keep its prices low with such fresh ingredients. TRU has a laid back and beautiful atmosphere that is always inviting and accessible to everyone, whether inside at the nice wood carved tables or outside on the open patio. It's not intimidating like other wine bars can be and offers food and drinks at price points more accessible than other restaurants in the area. To call TRU classist is simply laughable, given how they've made such an effort to keep their prices low when others in the area have not. And I think we can all agree that ordering online is not some challenging novel experience -- it's 2022, y'all. We've been doing this for years across so many aspects of our lives and it's become a convenient system for most. I love going to TRU and always have a great experience here, whether food, drinks, or both. With a great atmosphere, affordable food and drink, and inviting staff, I know I'll keep coming back. read more

I was a regular at Tru for years and came back on a visit recently. I know things have had to change because the pandemic, but the new ordering system is a nightmare. The girl at the bar couldn't even take my order at the register - you HAVE to do it through the website. With the website ordering system, you don't really know when you're going to get your order or if they even received it. We actually found out they didn't even see half our order and had to go down and tell them what we put into the website. And I don't want to make a whole account to buy a glass of wine. Also, what's with the plastic cups? Again, i know things have had to change with the pandemic. But other places have adapted without losing quality of service. Please, just let people place orders verbally at the register and invest in a dishwasher with a Sanitization setting. I loved Tru a lot for a long time and I want this business to succeed, but you guys have got to figure this out. read more

For the kind of place that it is, Tru is excellent. The vibe is casual, relaxed, and cozy. The food is SUPER affordable for what you get. They've got a decent selection of alcohol. Employees are friendly. You're not going to get a gourmet sandwich and the best cocktail of your life here, but for a casual place this is great. Their food is, at *worst*, average. I.e., you won't be disappointed by it. (And they don't charge extra for avocado!) I also really love that this place is super versatile - it's great for a drink with friends on a Fri/Sat night but it's also the perfect place for a work session on the weekdays/weeknights. Other things: Dog-friendly, no parking on site (but there's street parking and a lot nearby), lots of options for vegans read more

When I first arrived, I won't lie I was annoyed. The people behind the bar hardly greet you and when I asked for a menu, I was directed to an iPad to place my order. I don't own an iPad so immediately I felt pressured to figure out how to place my order while the line behind me grew longer. Apparently, you create your own sandwich (and trust that your combination of ingredients is tasty) on the iPad then pay at the bar. The idea of ordering electronically, could be a good idea and great in the future, but I think it's still a stretch for now. I had brought my parents who are not so technically savvy, so it took a while for them to place their order along with my husband's help, since the staff did not offer assistance. When the food came, it was very delicious. My sandwich was very very well prepared so I would say 4-stars to that! The meats they have available are great and the avocado was very fresh. However, another downfall was the presentation of your chips and drink. Again, the servers don't make a great effort to "serve" you. You simply get a can of soda - literally a can, and you go get your bag of chips from a community basket by the bar. For a place that super cute, I do think the customer service could be improved. And when older people are struggling to order, just walk over there and take their order. The odd part is, the paper form of the menu hangs on the wall in front of the iPads... But I guess I can't use those. Overall, I did like my $10 sandwich - but the process to order, the presentation and service by the college kids working the bar, left me thinking "that was ok". I understand this is a modern place, in a younger generation college town, and at least the UNC kids will love it. I would come back in the evening for a drink and try that out instead. read more
