Franklin Motors rates somewhere between three (OK) and four (good) stars for me. We had a good time here. Until we visited, I didn't know this was Chapel Hill's first and so far only beer garden. It's located just one block east of the Carrboro-Chapel Hill border, on popular West Franklin Street. The business opened in October 2021. Over the last few years, my wife and I passed by this place several times, saw all the people enjoying beer and food outside, and it piqued our interest. We're glad we finally got to check it out. According to Chapelboro.com ( https://chapelboro.com/news/business/beer-study-moving-to-new-chapel-hill-location-new-bar-taking-over ), the folks behind Franklin Motors renovated a small building previously owned by Franklin Street Auto, LLC. That's presumably where the "Motors" part of the name comes from. There are several auto shops in the immediate vicinity, including one I went to often: Automotion. I highly recommend them, by the way: https://www.yelp.com/biz/automotion-carrboro There's a Town of Chapel Hill gravel parking lot that you can pay to park in, adjacent to Franklin Motors. We parked for free on the street (South Graham Street). Compared to other beer gardens I've been to, Franklin Motors is one of the smallest and most humble-looking. The business sits on an unassuming corner lot. It's a simple, sort-of-makeshift spot that gives off vibes of an independent garage. You can get up on the rooftop, which is nice, and they also have a dedicated food truck on site: Roquette at Franklin Motors. The building has an indoor space on the ground level. Outside, it's gravel and there's a canopy -- that's where we sat. We couldn't get the fans to work. We stayed for hours, into the night when the property was string-lit. There was also a fire pit. This place is good for groups. We had a group of eight. It's also dog-friendly. Here's what my wife and I had: Drinks * Pimms Cup (forgot the price) - Pimms No. 1, lemon juice, cucumber topped with ginger ale * Middle James Great Musa Hefeweizen, 4.8% ($7) * Noble Wild Berry Knight Cider, 6.0% ($7) Food from the Roquette food truck * Mac & Cheese ($10) - fresh cream, Ashe County cheddar, toasted bread crumbs * Hand Cut Fries ($8) - hand-cut potatoes, parsley, rosemary, thyme, and housemade roasted garlic aioli (and ketchup). * Pineapple Chipotle Tacos ($18) - braised pulled pork, simmered in a pineapple sauce, chipotle, coriander, ginger, and orange, with avocado, pickled onion, cilantro, and queso fresco * Sliders (pick 3 for $15) - we got 2 Cheeseburgers -- Baldwin Beef (Yanceyville, NC), tomato, pickled onion, roasted garlic aioli, toasted brioche bun; and 1 Cajun-fried Chicken -- pickles, house slaw, roasted garlic aioli, toasted brioche bun The drinks hit the spot. The beer selection was good. Decent variety. The cocktails were standard. The food was OK. The only underwhelming dish was the mac and cheese. While the portion size was generous, it didn't taste significantly better than instant mac and cheese. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you expect better when going out and paying $10+ for mac and cheese. I did appreciate that it was made with local cheese. Everything else was pretty tasty and again, generous portion sizes. The fries were nicely seasoned. We wanted slow-cooked duck leg instead of braised pork on our tacos, but they were out of duck. That's alright. The tacos were meaty and filling. The sliders weren't bad. The beef in the cheeseburger sliders was a bit tough (well done to overcooked), but that was fine. Better safe than sorry. The Cajun-fried chicken slider was tasty enough. Some of our friends got the Caesar Salad ($10). It looked fresh and yummy. Portions on that were generous as well. Service was fine. We visited on an ordinary summer Saturday and stayed from about 5 to 9pm. There was a slow, steady stream of customers and it never got too busy or crowded. I wouldn't mind coming back to hang out and have drinks with friends.

Forget the name but it was good!

So this place has become my new neighborhood bar. I normally stop in here on my days off or when I'm on an extended break from my part time job. They have plenty of outdoor seating; but I prefer to sit indoors. I've gotten to know the bar staff a bit, plus sitting in the a/c is always nice. They have a great draft beer selection and you can also get wine or cocktails. An additional bonus is there is a food truck on the property. Roquette Food Truck is a wonderful place to get food. I've gotten to know the executive chef and owner there and he is a very talented guy. This is a great place to check out if you are just stopping by or you are new/old to the area and need a new bar to go to. Enjoy!

Great spot in Chapel Hill! Feels local and cozy. We came in on a Friday night before a basketball game and it was decently busy. They had a fire going which was great, and the roof top seating was packed (did not have a chance to go up there). They have a food truck with some solid options. We ordered the sliders and fries, but were told by some regulars that the kale salad is one of their best items. Loved the seasoning on the fries, just wish they were a tad crispier but they are solid overall. Be sure to check them out!

I recently moved to the area and my friend and I saw how cute this place was with the rooftop and lights so had to stop in. There is plenty of parking in the city lot nearby. The bar has a solid selection of IPAs, ales and sours on tap. Staff were super friendly and prompt! There's also a food truck with sliders and salads for ~$15-20. The food is solid but not the most memorable, though maybe other menu items are better. Overall, this place really shines because of its fun vibes and ample outdoor seating! I'll definitely be back.

Kake Caesar with fries

Fun, laid back Chapel Hill place with adjoining food truck. Beer is great, food truck options are not extensive, but are fine. Big portions! Great place to hang in a summer night.

This is their Tarheel chili for $10!!!! Tasty. But NOT worth $10.

I got the two empanadas with aside and was able to try both the chicken and the pork. I think I liked the chicken a little bit more, but both of them were very good and the plantains were also very good. Not overly sweet, but also not super dry. I will say the parking is kind of annoying without parking space directly nearby. Had to park in the parking garage across the street. The server was very nice and mindful of waters and when we needed things. I will say almost $20 for a regular dish seemed very expensive but the food was pretty good so I would probably come back - just for the cheaper empanadas as they were pretty filling as it was. The one thing that kind of threw me off was how they set the table with their water cups upside down, touching the table. I wouldn't say that I'm a clean freak, but also that seems kind of gross to me because that's where my mouth is going to be... I'd probably do something different there myself. This definitely is more of a Chapel Hill / Carrboro money type of dining experience $$ but I'd be back on nicer occasions. The pastry on the empanadas were very good. Really liked the yuca Frits as well

Lastnight, our family ate dinner there only to get sick from the muscles. 3 of us shared the muscles appetizer, which tasted great, but the three of us that ate the muscles ended up sick for a few hours later that evening and and next morning. Everyone else in the dinner party that had not eaten the muscles was fine. The service staff was over-extended. We had to ask the busing staff to get our waiter so that we could order and later in the meal to refresh our beverages. And finally, our dinner party was seated in the very furtherest back room that features an exit door with a large lit up exit sign over it. The room was not really fit to seat people at that price point. There are no sound buffers in the back room. It is akin to a large storage area with artwork on the wallks. There was no way to hear anyone talking at the table due to the roar of the sound bouncing off the walls. The room should not be used for seating at Tandem's price point. I rarely if ever give a bad review, but last night was really disappointing. My family came from Raleigh to join us and we had come over from Hillsborough. My husband and I went on a late Saturday afternoon and we were seated immediately. We shared the Fido's Fries as an appetizer and I got the Chili Cheese Dogs as my entree. Almost everything could be made veggie or vegan so I asked for the dogs to be veggie. My meal also came with a side so I got the frickles (fried pickles). The Fido's Fries were beer battered fries, topped with cheese, bacon (we got the pork option but they have soy), scallions, & sour cream (on the side). The fries were absolutely delicious! I loved my chili cheese dogs as well. It was a very generous portion because it was two dogs and a ton of frickles. As a dog lover, I adored all of the dog art & statues around the place. The menu is even dog themed. I mean they call appetizers kibbles & bits. That could not be any cuter! There is indoor seating (with a bar) and outdoor seating. As you can probably already tell, the restaurant is dog friendly (with their outdoor area). They even have a dog friendly menu (called puppy meals). Service was superb! There is no dedicated parking lot but we easily found free parking a few blocks away. My mom is a vegan and we sometimes struggles to find creative meals when she visits. I will definitely be taking her here next!

Menu was large and I had a hard time deciding. It is a somewhat vegan place much to my surprise so I figured why not try it here because I do love good vegan option even though I do eat meat I ordered the trio of patties black eyed peas and black bean. I took a bite of each and left the rest. Three different staff noticed my untouched food but none inquired or offered replacing it or removing it from bill which to me would be a gesture of a good business practice. My companion enjoyed and loved each morsel of his crab cakes! The battered fries were great! My server was very kind and attentive.

Already being on Franklin Street, I knew that wouldn't be a problem, and I decided to just pop into this Carolina Brewery location (I think their main one) because it was convenient. The inside is a beautiful mix of wood and metals with different levels, an interesting bar configuration and plenty of TVs. I took a seat at the bar and received excellent service, and enjoyed conversation about sports, beer, and food with a couple of other gentlemen sitting close by. The only snafu of the meal was the tea got dumped (close to closing) after I got my first glass but before I got a refill. They replaced it with another drink of course, but that was good tea! I ordered the shrimp and grits with tempered expectation, but will summarily say they were exceeded. This was a really nice sized portion of thick creamy grits, a total of 8 VERY plump shrimp, enough salty bacon and onion to balance it out. Each bite was well balanced, and while it can't compare to anything I've had out in the low country by the coast, it was better than I hope for this spot and time. If I had to suggest an improvement, it could use an element with a subtle sweetness, like roasted or blistered sweet corn shaved off the cob. I also would like the sauce more pronounced, or even a red-eye gravy. I wouldn't call it dry, but it could have benefited. That would take it onto another level. Anyhow, I enjoyed the meal and friendly conversation. I would certainly return next time I'm in Chapel Hill.

The star of the show in my opinion were the hush puppies and the corn and wild mushroom risotto. There were sooo many different flavors that perfectly complemented each other. I was blown away. And the pig cheek on top was incredible. 500/10. Our server made great recommendations! Then-- chaos and heartbreak ensued in the form of a fire alarm. We were forced to evacuate the restaurant as the fire department arrived , leaving about half our meal on the table. After 30 or so minutes of waiting out in the cold (we were apparently the only guests who hadn't paid out yet) our server came to find us. He asked us if we wanted to just give him our credit card information and he would ring us up later, when the fire department gave them the ok, as he understood not wanting to wait around. It broke our heart to leave our leftovers, but we agreed and went to go get the car. Thankfully we are stubborn.. and optimistic to a fault. And by the third time we circled around the block, the fire truck was pulling away. I ran in and asked if there was any chance our food hadn't been thrown away yet, and it hadn't! The staff was happy we had been able to come back, and they packed everything up for us, even taking the hush puppies off the bill and sneaking in a complimentary piece of key lime pie. I'm so glad we were able to tip our server appropriately for his great service-- and rescue our leftovers. Happy ending. All was well. (And the fire ended up being something innocuous in the unit above the restaurant)
