This is one of my favorite places in Chapel Hill. It is a cool place to spend some time with your friends and more upscale than the bars at CH. The prices are good and they have many options. You can get a big salad for 5$ and have a big healthy meal. The charcuterie is also good and affordable. There are many options of cheeses and it's great when in a small group. The staff is friendly and the environment is fun. I come here often and I love it. 10/10 read more

Awesome sandwiches. I will definitely be back again. My sandwich was about 8-9 dollars but that's because I got a drink and a pickle. You make your own sandwich by ordering on the tablets they have set up on the left as soon as you walk in. I thought it was expensive at first for each topping but you honestly don't need a lot. If I were a student here or if TRU were on Hillsborough street by State, you can count me in as a frequent patron. I stopped in for lunch after morning yoga at around 12 on a sunday. There were a couple other groups of people dinning in, but they were not very busy at all. At TRU, ordering is done thru iPad. They system is set up really well, so it's easy for one to create their own sandwich. Since everything is systemized, before you order, they even tell you the estimated wait time! (mine was 12 minutes) I ordered a wheat wrap with turkey, spinach, alfalfa sprout, avocado, and red onion with cranberry sauce and siracha sauce. I really like how you can tailor your sandwich/wrap to your own liking. From how much you want your bread/wrap toasted to the amount of fillings. The price of the sandwich depends on how many different items you want in your sandwich. My wrap came out to be just a little bit more than $4! What a steal! I didn't realize this, but the three different amount of veggies all cost the same! Which means heavy amount of avocado and light amount of avocado cost the same! Don't make the same rookie mistake as I did! The ingredients are all very fresh. The toast grilled marks on the sandwiches and wraps all look perfect. I also appreciate that they use real turkey meat not the sliced deli kind. They have different specials going on throughout the week. For today it was half off wine! My meal was light and refreshing. I finished the wrap and was very satisfied. Even with a glass of wine, my meal came out to be $6.25! What a steal. This place has a lovely outdoor space, wine, cocktails, and food. What else could you ask for? Upon walking in, it may be a little confusing to figure out how to order. The touchscreens are for food only, and the bar is for drinks only. Sometimes the bar is crowded, and so it takes a while to get a bartender to notice you - but someone will get to you eventually! It's just so popular. I've had some of the sandwiches, wine, and cocktails here. The offerings are pretty varied, so you're bound to find something you like. There are also salads which look delicious - every time I visit, there are some sitting on the counter for to go orders. The seating space is great. Inside, there are some couches and chairs as well as a longer table with chairs and smaller tables with chairs. However, I don't believe the place has AC which is obnoxious. Outside, there is a ground level patio and an upstairs deck. So lovely! Bottom line: I love to go here with a friend or two to get a glass of wine and catch up. Definitely a fam of TRU. By day, it's a cozy, rustic eatery with custom sandwiches. By night, it's a divey place to get a nice drink and converse with friends. The sandwiches here are actually pretty good. You walk in, and to your left are a set of iPads where you order your food. You can choose any bread, meats, vehetables, spreads, and more that you'd like to have with your meal. All of the tabletops are made from tree cutouts, which adds to the rustic feel. The drinks here are pretty good as well, and reasonably priced. I usually come here for a good glass of wine, but they also have a full bar available to make any other drinks as well. Their wine list is short, concise, and intuitive, so anyone ranging from connoisseur to wine novice will have no problem selecting a nice wine. My only complaint is that at night, the lights inside can get really dark, making it hard to see other people's faces while speaking with them. I love this place. My first visit was back in February when the exterior looked like a little hobbit hole with frosted windows and a cozy warm light glowing from the windows. This next trip was in the summer heat, so we sat on the rooftop. There has been some tussle fussel over the iPad ordering system. There is a table at the entrance with the iPads. Pick a table number (cute little wood blocks) and enter it first. Order your salad or sandwich, give it a name, and go to the bar to pay. Someone will be waiting there to look up your order on another tablet to calculate your order. You can also order wine, beer, and cocktails at the bar. Water is self-serve behind the bar. Also...they have flavored water!! If it's your first time in and you're not sure where to start or what to do, grab a staff member and they will get you started. Speaking of the staff, every person we came into contact with was simply full of sunshine and joy. The interior is hip and modern. Long wooden benches and high top chairs give it a woodsy cabin feel on the inside. The rooftop outside is perfect for shooting the breeze with friends. The two times I've been, the atmosphere is chill and youthful. Despite its proximity to establishments frequented by the youngins August through June, I found the Tru crowd to be a mellow mix. Sandwiches and salads. Hard to mess up. And as expected, Tru delivers. As you can build your own sandwich or salad, the balancing abilities of the Sammy master are your only limit to stacking on as much good stuff as you can. Today was my first time eating at TRU. I ordered a sandwich for lunch through their website. Approximately 25-30 minutes later when I arrived, my sandwich was ready to go and properly prepared! Awesome! The sandwich was good! I basically got a turkey club with onions and avocado. Nothing spectacular that I couldn't make myself, but good. The ingredients tasted fresh, minus the avocado which was already that dingy gray/green it gets after being left out. There seemed to be some confusion going on with the ordering system as well, as you could order on the ipads at the front, but could not pay there - and had to pay at the bar. Unfortunately, there were not staff at the bar to pay on a regular basis, leading to a lot of confusion and a long line at other times. I don't know why I don't come here more often. The sandwiches are great, and depending on how adept you are at selecting ingredients, they can come out to be as cheap as $5. The restaurant itself is also very chic, with a spacey, modern feel to it mixed with the coziness and comfort that accompanies wooden furniture. On nice days, the outdoor dining area on the roof is really enjoyable. Ordering is basically a custom, build-it-yourself type of process, similar to Subway's, except that you interact with an iPad on which you check off ingredients instead of a person. I believe the bread options allow you to choose a sandwich or a wrap, and there are also an assortment of proteins, vegetables, and sauces that you can choose in various quantities for your sandwich. I think there are side salads here as well, but I've never gotten one. Sometimes, if you order a salad dressing with your sandwich, they'll include it on the side. Other times, they're probably wondering why you're ordering a salad dressing with your sandwich. I love dipping my sandwich in the Asian sesame-peanut dressing. After placing your order, food will be brought to you in 15 or so minutes. No tip is needed, so the entire experience ends up costing as little as $5, which is a steal, in my opinion. You also don't have to interact with any human beings at all during the entire thing, if that's your thing. If I had to complain about anything, the portion size is a little small, and sometimes the bread is hard to eat because of its texture. Also, having to provide your credit card information just to make an account to order food is a terrible system security-wise. That being said the food was also average at best. The ingredients were decent but I ordered 6oz of bacon on my sandwich and got a single slice, I would have found someone to remedy the situation but since there are no waiters and only one server (who was not readily available) I just decided to forget it. Tru Deli is a great option for drinks and hanging out, especially with their outdoor area. The food options are pretty limited-- sandwiches and salads, but the prices are incredibly reasonable. My BLT was good, but I generally prefer to have a bit more variety so I probably wouldn't go out of my way to have a meal here. I also found the food ordering process a bit complicated. You order your customized sandwich or salad on tablets. I appreciated the ability to designate how much of each item you wanted, but I'm glad there wasn't a line of people waiting because it takes some time to get through all the options if you haven't been there before. It would be helpful if there was a paper version you could look at to help you decide what you want before going up to order. I like that they have drinks specials for every day of the week! TRU is such a great spot for a casual meal. The chill vibe inside and ample seating serve the location well for those looking to spend some time chatting, surfing the web, or do some homework. The inside is really nice with it's hip, almost industrial look and has really nice soft alternative music. In addition the upstairs patio is a great place to sit and eat on a nice day. In terms of the food, you make your own sandwich wraps or salads on an iPad at the front and pay per topping. Every time I've gotten food here I've always enjoyed it and am always quite pleased with the variety of toppings, dressings, and condiments available. In addition, the bar here is pretty nice with a good selection of drinks. I'm especially fond of the nice selection of west coast beers here that serve as a nice alternative to the heavily NC beer focus at many other bars. One especially great option is being able to get half pints here if you're not looking to have a whole pint. Dear person who gave this 2 stars: get a grip. Please don't review a non-restaurant as if it were a restaurant. This is a cool hangout with an interesting wine list and delightful nibbles. I'm sipping a glass of nebbiolo and munching on the havarti cheese with chives and rosemary almonds with sea salt as I type. Doubt I will spend a better 20 bucks this month. That said, I would advise the owners of Tru to think about slightly broadening the evening menu - even if it's just packaged sandwiches. I want you to stick around, see, and a couple of short sighted/ hungry people have already been and left since I sat down. The best part of this place is definitely the cute upstairs patio! Nothing better than a glass (or bottle) of wine upstairs outside. The view isn't great but it's decorated well so it doesn't matter. I've been here both during the day and the night and it really is a good spot for day drinking, going out or just grabbing a quick drink after work. I haven't tried their sandwiches but they seemed fresh and appetizing. Their cheese and charcuterie platter had good variety and decently priced! Service has always been good. It is with trepidation that I rate this as five stars, as me and my friends are worried that this place will get Franklinified (filled with undergrads, nothing against undergrads). I was on one hand disappointed to not see TRU get any INDY awards for new bar, but maybe that will help keep it a secret a little longer? What to say about TRU? It almost feels like a neighborhood bar, but it has a touch of bourgeois to it. Very comfortable and ample seating (especially the upstairs and patio area.) The upstairs feels somewhat hidden, which makes for a neat vibe. Very reasonable prices, and good specials (one of the few in the area to have specials on a Friday). The food menu is limited, but the deli sandwiches are very good. My favorite thing here is the tequila flight, wherein you get 4 (larger) shot glasses from a handful of luxurious tequilas. They also offer some very tasty fresh-squeezed juices to go with. The staff are very friendly and personable. I've come here during some events, and they've done a nice job helping to set things up. Coming in this was a bit different (order on an ipad by the door, no cash (wait I said no cash, yes I did)). I sat at the bar and used their free wifi to work while I ate and enjoyed some fantastic west coast micro brews on tap. The bartender was friendly, and helpful in answering my questions about the food and the area I was visiting. My Italian sandwich with bacon was NOM NOM!
