Merritt's is famous for their BLT sandwiches. I always have the single which consists of 3 slices of toasted sourdough bread and 7, yes 7, slices of bacon. When I go the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, I order in advance for pickup because this place is bustling. There are two outdoor patios to dine on and two parking lots, one across the street. The sandwich is outrageous, all ingredients are as fresh as can be. The bacon is cooked perfectly. Of course they have a varied menu with many other selections, but I just can get past the BLT. I add extra mayonnaise on mine! They also have a double and a triple BLT! I think the triple BLT has a POUND of bacon it. Merritt's is an experience not just a restaurant. Go as many times as you can! I just love the place.
Another place that was recommended to try when I'm town for the UNC and Duke game. Once again, I highly recommend this place. Food was great. It was pretty quick as well and reasonably priced. The soup needed salt. That was my only complaint, but once I realized they had salt available I was one happy camper. Parking can be challenging because it so busy, but there is additional parking across the street. It's a neat little place. Limited seating inside, but plenty outside. Everyone was very friendly as well. Give this place a try. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Merritts burger was juicy and flavorful but the grilled cheese was nice and thick. Yummy dipped in the tomato soup. Broccoli cheddar was pretty bland. Not sure if that's the cheese choice or lack of seasoning. Everything was just ok. No depth of flavor.
Arrived on an unseasonably cool mid May Day, and the place was packed. I had the pimento cheese sandwich and my wife enjoyed the single BLT. We shared. I prefer the bacon to be more crispy, but it was delicious. Don't skip dessert and get yourself a banana pudding. The homemade sour dough bread was delicious!
10/10 BLT - everything and more than we read about ahead of time. The banana pudding is a home run too. My wife loved the pimento cheese. The mix here doesn't have the same hefty spice kick that you get in the 'Masters Pimento cheese' recipes you see online, which suits her well. We came right at the switch from breakfast to lunch and that was optimal timing- filled up right after. Staff is super friendly. We will be back next visit.
I am unfortunately not a bacon eater so I cannot speak to the quality of their BLT (what they are most known for), but decent pimento cheese sandwich. Solid banana pudding. Tbh I have had better sandwiches and pudding elsewhere so I will prob not be back esp with how chaotic parking was, but glad to have tried out this Chapel Hill institution.
The bread and tomato were five stars. I like my bacon to be thin and crispy this one was flavorful but has more chew. I wish it had cool crispy iceberg lettuce. It is very busy in here and tight but they do offer outdoor seating. It isn't inexpensive so I am not sure why it gets such a crowd. I think my bill was around 18 for a sandwich chips and drink

I was visiting Durham and got so many recommendations to try Merritt's! I ordered a classic BLT and while it was nothing extraordinary, it was a great summer sandwich! The tomatoes were fresh and the bacon was cooked to a great crisp. I got sourdough bread but they had lots of other options. The staff was super friendly and helpful. It has a cute outdoor area to sit under umbrellas. Overall a great summer sandwich shop!
How good can a BLT be? Apparently REALLY GOOD. This is the best sandwich I've ever had. Very high quality ingredients can make a simple sandwich be extraordinary. I got the baby BLT (it's a normal sized sandwich with four slices of bacon) and my boyfriend for the double BLT. I don't remember how many slices of bacon the double has but I remember the single BLT has 7, so some number greater than that. Always packed but with incredibly friendly and quick service!
Our last day in Chapel Hill and I was craving a blt. No better place than Merritt's. I hadn't been here in years and it was exactly the same as I had remembered. We ordered and found a free table outside near a heater. The blt was perfect. I miss it.
A Chapel Hill institution, Merritt's Grill is best known for its delicious BLTs, which come in four different sizes, ranging from normal (the 'Baby') to absurdly oversized (the 'Triple'). And yes, they're as good as advertised -- creamy and flavorful, and served on some of the tastiest sourdough this side of heaven. And this family-run roadside restaurant also has other great options, from Carolina pulled pork and burgers to salads and sandwiches, all served with a smile in a setting that feels like a classic country store in the middle of farm country. Inside seating is VERY limited, but the first-come tables out front are the perfect spot to enjoy a BLT and a cold beer on a summer afternoon. Merritt's is open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, and both seating and parking can be a challenge during peak times. So arrive early or pack your patience, but the food and the service are worth it. Highly recommended.
I have heard about these BLTs for years and finally got to try one. They were good but I may have built these up too much in my head because I wasn't blown away. The egg salad was good. Location is small for the crowd that was there on a Saturday but they have plenty of outdoor seating if a nice day.
Went for the first time recently! Love the history of this as well as the tranquil outside eating area in the back. Baby BLT was great and I especially loved the light wheat bread. My husband had essentially the BLT plus avocado and turkey and I think that was even better. Could do with some fries instead of chips though . Coconut cake was also delicious! Next time I'll have to try the pulled pork sandwich. I only wish they were open later. I can totally see myself enjoying a cozy soup and hot sandwich on a brisk fall evening with some live music under their string lights. read more
I worked hard in the sun for this packed peppery BLT. I chose their double portion to save half for travel tomorrow. Merritt's is a place on my list (and my mother's) for a while, and now we have a chance to visit. We made small talk with the staff. They were thrilled to learn my mother bookmarked this place when she worked at UNC Hospitals some years ago. The staff treated us well. They call out orders by name, so listen closely for your name. It was too hot to eat outside, though I imagine their bamboo patio out back will be delightful to sit at in the cooler months. The inside tables along the window have a view out to the street. There's a display case featuring fresh made desserts and other sweets worth checking out. I loved the fresh tomato, lettuce, and crispy bacon on this sandwich. I'd enjoy coming back, though I think I'll take my sandwich home next time. BLTs are the specialty here, and they do a great job making them. read more

We ordered food to go. It took all of 5 minutes! They sent me a text to tell me the food was ready. Super easy check out process. The outdoor patio has a lovely atmosphere, but we took out food back to the Carolina Inn where we were staying. The BLT was excellent, and this is in early March not in tomatoes season! We also had the chicken salad sandwich. My son had the cheeseburger which he disappeared in seconds. We had to have the banana pudding--fabulous!! And.c it was such a great deal...like $10 for each sandwich. We will be back for sure!! read more

The bread and tomato were five stars. I like my bacon to be thin and crispy this one was flavorful but has more chew. I wish it had cool crispy iceberg lettuce. Such a great little spot. Hospitality was great and service was fast. The restaurant was clean and had a sanitation rate of 98.5 which I loved. The food was amazing. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating has fans and heaters for the different seasons. Definitely recommend. read more
Merritt's Grill has been on my radar for a while and FINALLY I had the opportunity to come here! Famous for their BLTs, Merritt's is an iconic eatery located in Chapel Hill. They are supposed to have one of the best BLT sandwiches in the whole country! With all this hype, I certainly had very high expectations. The restaurant isn't huge as it used to be a gas station. There is lots of memorabilia throughout the inside and it has a very nostalgic, classic vibe about it. They offer some indoor seating, although it is limited due to the amount of people stopping by. However, there is plenty of outdoor seating available that is shaded! Ordering is super efficient and they do an excellent job keeping the line moving (as it gets very long during peak lunch hours). I was very impressed with just how efficient and helpful the workers were. We only waited 10-15 minutes for our order, and we were there during prime lunch time. The menu consists of more than just different sized BLTs. They offer other deli sandwiches with ham, turkey, chicken salad, egg salad, and other varieties. They also offer breakfast now too, along with burgers, dogs, and house-made desserts. One thing that is consistent with all their food is the fresh, high quality, local ingredients they use. They really do pride themselves in using the best produce, breads, dairy, etc. to offer their customers with the best sandwiches! I would also like to highlight that everything is made in house, all the sandwiches, salads, etc. which definitely enhances the experience! My family and I ended up ordering a regular BLT, a double BLT, and the Linda Woods Chicken Salad Sandwich. The regular BLT is their signature sandwich and includes toasted Sour Dough or bread of your choice, a generous amount of bacon, fresh crispy green lettuce, and juicy slices of Vine tomato! This sandwich did live up to the hype, so fresh, so simple, and yet so perfect. The tomatoes were boasting of flavor, the bacon was seasoned and cooked to perfection (wasn't greasy at all), the lettuce was crisp, and the mayo tied it all together. Really couldn't have asked for a more perfect BLT, did not disappoint by any means. I also ordered a side of their chicken salad, and wow! This was some of the best chicken salad I've had. The chicken was shredded really well and it was seasoned with ample amounts of pepper, really tasty! The double BLT takes their classic BLT and adds another layer of goodness. My parents both really enjoyed their sandwiches as well. They were very impressed with how flavorful a simple sandwich could be. My mom noted that the chicken salad was by far some of the best she'd had. Overall, Merritt's is a must if you are ever near Chapel Hill. The eatery is an iconic place for a reason! I really loved the vibe of deli as it captured a nostalgic feeling. The service is awesome and you can tell they know how to handle the high volume/demand they receive. Everything we ordered left us full and very satisfied. Their food is made with local, fresh ingredients, which only enhance the flavors of sandwiches! While the BLT is a must try, I would also recommend trying the chicken salad. All their food has the perfect ratio of ingredients. All the sandwiches had the right balance of meat to bread to vegetables to mayo. There is parking, but it does get really busy and will fill up, even the lot across the street! I could keep raving about Merritt's, but I'd run out of space. So I'll leave it at: don't let the lines intimidate you, just go, you won't regret it! read more

I really can't take credit for finding this restaurant. I asked chat to locate a classic diner between the airport and my son's house in Chapel Hill. It gave me Merritt's which is definitely up my alley. I read about their "Famous BLT" which is what I set my taste buds on but when I walked in the Daily Specials board read "Reuben" which is my favorite sandwich especially when it is made with Pastrami. It turned out to be Corned Beef but it was the most moist Pastramiesque corned beef I've ever had. Needless to say the BLT didn't make the cut but I feel compelled to go back and check that box off. read more
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by Merritt's. I had heard such rave reviews of the place and have constantly seen it packed so I decided to try it myself and it did not disappoint! The staff were very friendly and walked me through their menu. I ordered the BLT on sourdough and I can see why it was award winning. With such simple main components (bacon, lettuce, tomatoes), this sandwich is so flavorful and one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Highly recommend Merritt's, especially on a nice day as they have great outdoor seating. read more

I'm a UNC fan and this is one of the best places to eat in Durham! Not only was the food great but the staff, the mood, and the store was lively and nice. The only things I have to pick is how small the restrooms are and how so many people pile into the store. But otherwise this was the best! read more

My husband got the Reuben, I got the double blt and we both shared the banana pudding The BLT is on sourdough.. lightly toasted is how it's served. So real review... it was ok. They boast it has a lot of bacon. It does, but it's curled up and kinda hard. The tomatoes were plentiful and so good. Personally I like my bacon a tad softer, again personal preference. Also it needed more mayo in my opinion. So in my opinion the sandwich was mid. My husband said the Reuben was good, but again not as tasty as it's hyped up to be. However the banana pudding was the winner. So so good, creamy and just wow. Totally try it all for yourself! read more
Been here 3X and as much as I want to order something else, I find myself ordering the burger. All 3X has been fantastic. Literally it looks like a photo and it tastes so good. They do not offer fries here but they do offer bagged potato chips. Merritt's has been around for a long time. It's a staple around here, and if you haven't tried it, it's a MUST! You order at the counter and can eat inside or choose to eat outside towards the back surrounded by bamboo. We came one time and they had a beer tent and speakers where they were playing one of the games via radio, not TV. So you can still have a conversation and a beer outside. Service is always nice. They don't rush you, even though sometimes the line is long. Overall, great place. Come and check it out. As for me, maybe I will finally order a sandwich on my next trip. We will see. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got around to trying it. I got the vegetarian without onions and then replaced the balsamic mayo with regular mayo. It was super good and the sourdough was delicious! I ordered, got my food and sat down all within 10 mins, the inside is super chill- they have seating both inside and outside and plenty of it. I'd definitely come back again! read more

Met our daughter here for lunch as we were visiting from out of town and she heard it had the best BLT. We sat outside in the back which was a cute area with tables and the backdrop was bamboo trees. I am gf and had the chicken salad on gf bread it was very good, a little too much Mayo for my liking but still delicious all the same. My daughter and her friend both had the BLT which was huge and both said delicious! Finally my husband had the ham sandwich and he too was pleased. Would recommend Merritt's Grill for a tasty lunch for sure. read more

I always make sure Merritt's is on my list when I visit NC. I go early enough to miss the lunch crowd, or else there is a line and it can be hard to find parking. The BLT is just to die for. The tomatoes are THICK and super juicy. Fresh lettuce. And the bacon is crispy and seasoned wonderfully. I always go for light mayo and it feels like the perfect amount for me. All on their sourdough bread of course. Just a delicious and humble little sandwich. When it's nice out, I love sitting outside at their tables, which get full quickly in the nice weather but there are lots of them. A true Chapel Hill staple. read more
