I worked hard in the sun for this packed peppery BLT. I chose their double portion to save half for travel tomorrow. Merritt's is a place on my list (and my mother's) for a while, and now we have a chance to visit. We made small talk with the staff. They were thrilled to learn my mother bookmarked this place when she worked at UNC Hospitals some years ago. The staff treated us well. They call out orders by name, so listen closely for your name. It was too hot to eat outside, though I imagine their bamboo patio out back will be delightful to sit at in the cooler months. The inside tables along the window have a view out to the street. There's a display case featuring fresh made desserts and other sweets worth checking out. I loved the fresh tomato, lettuce, and crispy bacon on this sandwich. The outdoor patio has a lovely atmosphere, but we took out food back to the Carolina Inn where we were staying. The BLT was excellent, and this is in early March not in tomatoes season! Merritt's is famous for their BLT sandwiches. I always have the single which consists of 3 slices of toasted sourdough bread and 7, yes 7, slices of bacon. When I go the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, I order in advance for pickup because this place is bustling. There are two outdoor patios to dine on and two parking lots, one across the street. The sandwich is outrageous, all ingredients are as fresh as can be. The bacon is cooked perfectly. Of course they have a varied menu with many other selections, but I just can get past the BLT. Another place that was recommended to try when I'm town for the UNC and Duke game. Once again, I highly recommend this place. Food was great. It was pretty quick as well and reasonably priced. The soup needed salt. That was my only complaint, but once I realized they had salt available I was one happy camper. Parking can be challenging because it so busy, but there is additional parking across the street. It's a neat little place. Limited seating inside, but plenty outside. I really can't take credit for finding this restaurant. I asked chat to locate a classic diner between the airport and my son's house in Chapel Hill. It gave me Merritt's which is definitely up my alley. I read about their "Famous BLT" which is what I set my taste buds on but when I walked in the Daily Specials board read "Reuben" which is my favorite sandwich especially when it is made with Pastrami. Merritt's Grill has been on my radar for a while and FINALLY I had the opportunity to come here! Famous for their BLTs, Merritt's is an iconic eatery located in Chapel Hill. They are supposed to have one of the best BLT sandwiches in the whole country! With all this hype, I certainly had very high expectations. The restaurant isn't huge as it used to be a gas station. There is lots of memorabilia throughout the inside and it has a very nostalgic, classic vibe about it. They offer some indoor seating, although it is limited due to the amount of people stopping by. However, there is plenty of outdoor seating available that is shaded! Ordering is super efficient and they do an excellent job keeping the line moving (as it gets very long during peak lunch hours). I was very impressed with just how efficient and helpful the workers were. We only waited 10-15 minutes for our order, and we were there during prime lunch time. The menu consists of more than just different sized BLTs. They offer other deli sandwiches with ham, turkey, chicken salad, egg salad, and other varieties. They also offer breakfast now too, along with burgers, dogs, and house-made desserts. One thing that is consistent with all their food is the fresh, high quality, local ingredients they use. They really do pride themselves in using the best produce, breads, dairy, etc. to offer their customers with the best sandwiches! I would also like to highlight that everything is made in house, all the sandwiches, salads, etc. which definitely enhances the experience! My family and I ended up ordering a regular BLT, a double BLT, and the Linda Woods Chicken Salad Sandwich. The regular BLT is their signature sandwich and includes toasted Sour Dough or bread of your choice, a generous amount of bacon, fresh crispy green lettuce, and juicy slices of Vine tomato! This sandwich did live up to the hype, so fresh, so simple, and yet so perfect. The tomatoes were boasting of flavor, the bacon was seasoned and cooked to perfection (wasn't greasy at all), the lettuce was crisp, and the mayo tied it all together. Really couldn't have asked for a more perfect BLT, did not disappoint by any means. I also ordered a side of their chicken salad, and wow! This was some of the best chicken salad I've had. The chicken was shredded really well and it was seasoned with ample amounts of pepper, really tasty! The double BLT takes their classic BLT and adds another layer of goodness. My parents both really enjoyed their sandwiches as well. They were very impressed with how flavorful a simple sandwich could be. My mom noted that the chicken salad was by far some of the best she'd had. Overall, Merritt's is a must if you are ever near Chapel Hill. The eatery is an iconic place for a reason! I really loved the vibe of deli as it captured a nostalgic feeling. The service is awesome and you can tell they know how to handle the high volume/demand they receive. Everything we ordered left us full and very satisfied. Their food is made with local, fresh ingredients, which only enhance the flavors of sandwiches! While the BLT is a must try, I would also recommend trying the chicken salad. All their food has the perfect ratio of ingredients. All the sandwiches had the right balance of meat to bread to vegetables to mayo. There is parking, but it does get really busy and will fill up, even the lot across the street! Also it needed more mayo in my opinion. So in my opinion the sandwich was mid. My husband said the Reuben was good, but again not as tasty as it's hyped up to be. Been here 3X and as much as I want to order something else, I find myself ordering the burger. All 3X has been fantastic. Literally it looks like a photo and it tastes so good. They do not offer fries here but they do offer bagged potato chips. Merritt's has been around for a long time. It's a staple around here, and if you haven't tried it, it's a MUST! You order at the counter and can eat inside or choose to eat outside towards the back surrounded by bamboo. We came one time and they had a beer tent and speakers where they were playing one of the games via radio, not TV. So you can still have a conversation and a beer outside. Service is always nice. They don't rush you, even though sometimes the line is long. Overall, great place. Come and check it out. As for me, maybe I will finally order a sandwich on my next trip. We will see. read more

The Double BLT was amazing. The perfect combination with a double layer of mayo and tomatoes. The tomatoes were very flavorful and juicy and the bacon was delicious. This was a delicious sandwich with just the 3 basics. The banana pudding and cookies looked good but I did not try them. A number of other things on the menu looked amazing too such as the fried baloney sandwich and the hamburgers but had to go with the BLT. The old service station atmosphere was great, they had a nice shaded outdoor area that looked very tropical amidst the bamboo trees. Would be a great location lunch spot on a sunny day. read more

Met our daughter here for lunch as we were visiting from out of town and she heard it had the best BLT. We sat outside in the back which was a cute area with tables and the backdrop was bamboo trees. I always make sure Merritt's is on my list when I visit NC. I go early enough to miss the lunch crowd, or else there is a line and it can be hard to find parking. The BLT is just to die for. The tomatoes are THICK and super juicy. Fresh lettuce. And the bacon is crispy and seasoned wonderfully. I always go for light mayo and it feels like the perfect amount for me. All on their sourdough bread of course. Just a delicious and humble little sandwich. In all my visits to UNC, I had never been to Merritt's to try the BLT so I made sure to change that. I came in during breakfast so I asked for the smaller BLT with scrambled egg. We came here for brunch and this place was busy. We found parking on their small parking lot and sat outside. We ordered the Double BLT, a small Tomato Soup, and the Carolina Dog. We sat outside since there was room for the dog. The inside was small and cozy. The food was ready after a few minutes. Everything looked good to me.
