A group of us visited this restaurant after our 5K as part of a birthday celebration. The staff was very courteous and friendly. They answered our questions and provided recommendations upon request. We had a large group, so it was taking a while for all of the food to be ready. I decided to just get a raspberry white chocolate scone and a greena colada so that I didn't have to wait a very long time to eat. We enjoyed sitting upstairs where we could all sit together and watch the scenery while eating. The kids loved the space, and it also provided us with some privacy for our birthday celebration. The scone was very good. I was a bit disappointed with the smoothie, though. I was expecting it to be flavorful and naturally sweet due to the mangoes and pineapple as well as the honey that was supposed to be added, but it was quite bland and not flavorful at all. Alas, Nosh is not what it used to be. I remember it as a great Durham lunch spot, but that was 3 locations and at least one owner ago. I ordered sandwiches online to pick up today. The time was supposed to be 10-20 minutes. It turned out more like 40, and no one seemed to notice that it was taking too long. The place wasn't full by any means. The turkey sandwiches were dry--minimal mayo and a couple of halved cherry tomatoes instead of slices. The turkey was tasty, but far too thickly sliced for my taste. Overall meh. My son had a burger which he said was huge but terribly overcooked and dry. (The order form does ask how you want the burger cooked, and I'd chosen Medium). Again, just a drop of sauce. Barely edible. The smoothie drinks and house made chips were good. But not enough to compensate for the sandwiches. Sorry! read more

My family and I went here after a doctor's appointment at Duke. I had the Carol's Chopper salad. It was one of the best salads I've ever had in my life, and it was only $14 with grilled chicken. The candied walnuts added a nice touch of sweetness to it. My mother has grits with scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese, and my sister had a burger. They both enjoyed their food as well. It was a little loud in there during the day for their tastes, but that's no fault of the restaurant. It was busy! And the smoothie machine makes a din. No stars off for that, though. We stopped in for a quick bite before heading over to Duke for an afternoon tour. The venue is small and quaint with some great decor and rooftop / patio seating as well as indoor. Service was quick and delightful. I felt embraced and a part of the town immediately thanks to the hospitality of the Nosh team. We all had bacon cheese burgers - all excellent! Burgers were cooked perfectly and juicy! The homemade chips were a nice surprise and were fantastic dipping in some ranch dressing. Took me awhile but I finally made it to the new Nosh location. Same great menu, fun new place. It's tiny inside but there are picnic tables and rooftop seating -- and a parking lot! Menu seems the same; I always love the Faye's Turkey sandwich with chips and ranch. Some fresh baked goods like scones and cookies looked delicious. Happy, friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere. Nosh does catering for Duke and one of the highlights of their offerings is their in-house made granola - it's chock full of nuts and dried cranberries and so-ooo good!! Located next to Duke Hospital my mother thought after a long day of appointments that we would enjoy this spot. You walk in and it a funky vibe (I say that in a good way). The decor is colorful and funny. The first thing I noticed was a picture of my favorite basketball player and teenage crush Grant Hill - so it's already a win. My mother had breakfast last time but we missed breakfast and had lunch instead. We ordered the Mallard's Chicken sandwich, Spritzer sandwich and mom got a Chai Tea. So we were very hungry and ate everything but honestly the quality was top notch and ingredients were fresh and tasty. The chicken sandwich had a lovely seasoned chicken breast and a good bun. The star though was the homemade chips Mom said the Spritzer was season nicely and she is a sucker for toasted bread. She didn't even let me try so I know it was good. Mom got the macaroni salad which we both thought lacked flavor. A good experience and tasty food. I wouldn't say anything was crazy unique but good fresh ingredients, funky decor, and tasty food is all good. read more

We finally got to check out Nosh! It had been closed during Covid and have opened back up. They don't have their full menu yet, but what they do offer, they do very well. Ok... so where do I start? This place is pretty dope! FOOD-- The food is definitely 5 stars! From the first bite, I could tell that all of the ingredients were extremely fresh. They use local eggs, which is a bonus for me because At home, I only use fresh eggs. I got the the "Duke Slammer" which consisted of a HUGE pancake, FRESH turkey sausage (or bacon or regular sausage if you choose), eggs, and you can choose from cheesy grits, fresh fruit, or curry potatoes. I got the curry potatoes, in my opinion they weren't that great. Traded them out for fresh fruit, which was amazing and truly fresh. I also got iced coffee which was pretty good-- got it with vanilla syrup. Overall food, completely satisfied. OVERALL EXPERIENCE-- The location was clean, and so loved the layout of the restaurant. The only thing... it was very confusing on how to get your silverware, if you leave your plates in the table, no sort of directions. They only told us to go have a seat and they'll bring the food out (gave a number). We got to the table, there was no silverware, napkins, or anything. We had to pretty much find the stuff ourselves. Other than that, it was a great experience. The staff was friendly. Definitely a good breakfast spot. The food was amazing. Chill atmosphere. If I could to 1/2 stars, I'd honestly give them a 4.5. My mouth is watering as I am writing this. I always get the biscuits and gravy with eggs over the top. Its enough for the whole day and just delicious. Lastly, the coffee is outstanding. It tastes like they filter the water because it has excellent flavor. And the atmosphere is really why we love it for our family. We will get there early and grab a big table to play trivial pursuit. Came here after a nearby place was unexpectedly closed and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste. Ordered the Spritzer, which is their Rueben sandwich, with potato salad as a side. To my delight the corned beef was REAL corned beef, not some deli sliced nonsense that far too many places serve. This was thick cut, tender brisket - stacked higher than most places - on par with what I'm used to back in NYC! A must order for any corned beef lovers. The sauerkraut was tasty with just a tiny amount of tang, letting the beef shine through. Amazing. The potato salad was done pretty well but could use some stronger mustard, smaller cuts and more salt, pepper and vinegar for my tastes. Overall, glad we stopped in. Sometimes I come to Nosh just because I'm nostalgic from when I came here for the occasional brunch in undergrad. My favorite thing to order here: BISCUITS! I had a pork sausage biscuit here yesterday morning for about $4 and it was much more filling than I expected. The texture is just right--not as greasy as Bojangles (although I do love Bojangles biscuits, in their own way), slightly crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. I ended up saving 1/3 of it for my husband because I couldn't finish it. My friend ordered Maggie's Scramble: eggs with onions, peppers, portobello mushrooms, cheese in a tortilla, served with a side of potato chunks. It came in a huge portion and she, too, brought half of it home to eat later. Important fact: they serve breakfast here until 3pm! My coworker loves to order the flapjacks for lunch! The order numbers all have a photo of the animal shelter dogs that are up for adoption, which is super cute. Nosh has a variety of desserts/brownies for sale, and plenty of tea/coffee/cappuchino/chai latte/smoothies/milkshakes. My friend tried the iced Rocket Fuel (Counterculture coffee) and thought it was decent. Weekday lunchtime can be quite busy, although I don't usually have to wait in line for more than 5 minutes or so, and there's at least a few tables open at any given time. The outdoor seating is nice for people watching. For lunch I usually get the Carey's Half&Half (sandwich and soup). The last time I went, the chicken salad sandwich was a little dry...but the soup (I think it was tomato) was amazing! It's too late when they cool. The Spritzer was excellent. One side had a lot more corned beef than the other. The other side was almost all sauerkraut and no corned beef. I came here for breakfast and it's pretty basic. I shared some buttermilk pancakes with my mom and my bf got the combo breakfast plate. The pancakes were light and fluffy and very large! I was definitely full, no bells and whistles, just pancakes, which I can appreciate. My bf's meal looked much more comprehensive. fruit, sausage, eggs... the standard breakfast and nothing fancy. For the price, it's pretty good but don't come in expecting a true breakfasty breakfast place. Otherwise it is a lovely place with friendly service. What a cute restaurant! It's been years since I've been here but went this AM for a business meeting. At 8am there was plenty of parking and plenty of seating. We got our food almost immediately. Almost everyone got Rocket's Breakfast...everything was DELICIOUS! I had bacon, eggs, and fruit salad (which they gave me double helping of since I said no to bread!) and a chai latte. Yummy! I thought the bacon was great and my coworkers said the turkey sausage was amazing...eggs cooked perfectly...and the fruit salad!!! Not mostly melon!!! "Sandwiches & burgers off Duke's west campus" This is a common place from which Duke offices get catering. And that makes sense given the quality is good but the efficiency at the restaurant is a bit less-good sometimes. Restaurant is clean, but there's not much seating if you're coming with a larger (more than 4 people) group. Many tables just seat 2. It can be a bit loud inside nonetheless at times. Positives: + Good quality sandwiches at an affordable price. I like the Deluca turkey panini, which is $8 with veggie slaw. Good sized meal and quite high quality (even though it's quite messy/ drippy) + Other choices. They have pizza, salads, some breakfast choices, smoothies, coffee etc. Negatives: - Slow. Ordering can be painfully slow if done in the store since the same person taking the order will stop to make each person their espresso or other drink at times. So, you can be in line for 10 minutes even if there are just 2-3 people in line ahead of you. ADVICE: ORDER AHEAD. Food preparation is not too slow if getting something like a sandwich, but can be slow if you've ordered something a bit unusual like pizza. - Parking. It can be a bit chaotic at times. Every time I stop in here, it's solidly good. It gets great traffic, as it's one of the best locally owned spots in walking distance of Duke West Campus. The sandwiches are really quite good. However, their sides really leave a lot to be desired - none of them are that great. This is consistently their worst aspect, and I continually hope they'll up their side game. I had the Wendlyn's Portobello mushroom burger but it was basically mushroom with a whole lot of mayonnaise. I chose veggie slaw as my side and should have realized this just meant coleslaw, but I thought maybe it would have less mayo because it was called veggie (that is not the case). They do have an extensive breakfast menu. My friend got the breakfast pizza without bacon but it didn't have a lot of flavor - would be nice if there was a vegetarian version that didn't miss out. I also got a rocket fuel coffee which is just an iced version of their coffee blend but nothing special. I went with a chicken salad sandwich that was heartily stuffed but a little bland. And a gouda tomato soup -- thick and tangy and perfect for the cold day. And a chai latte, which unfortunately managed to smell better than it tasted. I'd say the most "eclectic" thing about Nosh is the set-up itself: they have Duke posters, a flat-screen TV, benches built out of skis (surprisingly comfy, actually!), and Toys-R-Us's entire board game aisle, spanning the decades from Sorry to Mad Gab. The cashier was all smiles when we walked in and gave us the run down of the menu. We settled on the Slammer (pancake, sausage, eggs and curry potatoes) and the Piper's Patties ("egg pancakes" with parsely, veggies, bacon, salsa and cheese"). We *might* have also snuck in a couple of their tasty home-made doughnuts and a cup of hot chocolate while we waited for a food. My girlfriend said the hot chocolate was the best she'd ever tasted. She talked about it for the rest of the day. I'm not a huge chocolate fan, but that hot chocolate was pretty amazing. Piper's Patties were a bit of a surprise with just how flavorful they were. Tons of great flavors, but between the bacon, the veggies and salsa, none of it was overwhelming any of the others. The balances was perfect and made for a great meal. The food in the slammer was solid breakfast food. It's not really going to blow your mind with a new flavorful twist or anything. It's just breakfast food, cooked really well. It was all kinds of delicious. The sausage was SO savory, the pancake super fluffy, the scrambled eggs fluffy and buttery and the potatoes were soft and flavorful. It's a fun place. The atmosphere is very low-key, and a bit whimsical. Similar to Pipers in the park, the furniture and decorating feels a bit thrown together. Just like Pipers though, it's thrown together in a common theme, so it doesn't feel trashy or unprofessional. Colorful painting, cool wall hangings, benches made of skis. It's like a rich hipster gave their kid a restaurant for Christmas! There's even board games to play with your family and friends and tables plenty big enough for it. I love Nosh. I'm giving it four stars based on my long-term experiences there and not my most recent one. I normally order a salad, and their salads are fantastic! I have had their chocolate chip cookies too and highly recommend them. On my most recent trip to Nosh I decided to try a pizza. I asked the person at the register for a recommendation. I wanted to know which she recommended - the Browning's Tomato or a different one. I can't recall the name of the second one, and it's not on their online menu. She fired back with P.W.'s Pepperoni which was not what I had asked about. I again explained the choices I was considering, and she again said I should get the pepperoni which was her absolute favorite. We did this little dance a few times with me saying that wasn't what I was considering and her insisting it should be what I ordered. Finally I said I was a vegetarian and did not want a pepperoni pizza. She said I should still order the pizza but without the pepperoni. The pizza also has mushrooms on it which I don't like. I then explained that to her and she finally recommended the Browning's Tomato. Really, I don't think I should have to go through such a long drawn out process to get a pizza recommendation. It's none of her business why I don't want the pepperoni pizza. Eventually I got my tomato pizza. It's really just a straight up cheese pizza. It smelled like Chucky Cheese pizza. I think it tasted better. The pizza would not be my go to meal at Nosh. It was uneventful and not very tasty. I did get a lot of it and took half of it home. My husband finished it off. I wasn't interested in eating more of it. Without this most recent experience I would have given Nosh five stars. I'm only giving it four stars because of the service I experienced at the counter. Yeah, I didn't think the pizza was very good but everything else there seems to be fantastic. My go-to meal is the Brown Derby Chopper with blue cheese dressing. I was recently 1307 miles away in Austin TX waiting in line at the coveted Franklin Barbecue with some native Texas foodies. It was only moments after I mentioned that I was from Durham NC that they began asking me if I'd ever eaten at one of their favorite restaurants in North Carolina. Munch was it it? Notch? Nosh, I suggested... nods of approval. Nosh's ambiance is clean, playful, and a little eccentric, with a panoply of board games to stave off hunger as you wait, and laminated reservation numbers complete with pictures of orphaned kittens available for adoption.... and presumably consumption. I've yet to try anything at Nosh that I didn't like, Brunch, Lunch, or otherwise, but Brunch is where they really shine. And within the brunch umbrella, and what really makes Nosh a superstar is their Curry Biscuits and Gravy. The taste is pretty hard to describe as it draws on two fairly disparate food traditions; down home country and Indian, but I feel fully justified in saying that Nosh makes it twerk. They make it twerk like a motherf*****. At this point I would actually be more surprised if crack wasn't one of the secret ingredients. If you somehow managed to kill and cannibalize Chuck Norris, you would be eating Nosh's Curry Biscuits and Gravy. Best of all, its priced reasonably. Upon your arrival you will be greeted with a smile and small conversation which was a highlight I enjoyed while stopping by from out of town. I am not positive where the beans were from but they were very good which hit the spot on a cold morning. Food: The portions were large and the food was fresh and hot.
