So, I don't write a ton of reviews, but I felt today's experience at Breakaway needed one. We went and tried Breakaway in Carrboro for the first time this morning. First of all, when entering, it is very crowded near the door. We met with the hostess at the door and she greeted us and said she would need to clear off a table for us and told us we would need to order at the register. That's fine..... she offered us menus to look at while we waited. So, we took the menus and expected to be told when the table was ready. What I was not told is that we were apparently right where the line for the register is to form. I didn't know that until another customer decided to make a nasty comment about "moving up". Well, after 5 minutes of waiting we just went and sat down at what was apparently the cleared table. Hostess never came back and told us our table was ready. So we sat down and looked over the menu. We then went up to order and left menus on our table. First of all, the line to order and the entire process to get inside was just way more confusing and unorganized than it needed to be. While in line, someone came by and bused our table and removed the menus we had left. Okay not a big deal, but there were also other customers trying to then come and take our table...... We ordered our food and went back to our table. The food came out in a timely manner and the food was fine. We got a cinnamon roll, coffee, tofu scramble and avocado toast. I really don't have any complaints with the food, but it wasn't anything special. But the complete chaos of this place, unorganized staff, and poor service has permanently written this place off my list. There are too many options in the area for a better breakfast without all the disorganized chaos. Go somewhere else like Briggs, Another Broken Egg, Foster's, or Flying Biscuit. You won't be guessing at how their setup works when you enter the door...... Any of these other options would be more satisfying and provide better service. read more

Enjoyed a lovely breakfast at Breakway today. My go to is always the avocado toast. I love the thick bread, the perfectly dressed greens underneath, and the feta/chili flakes on top. I like to get a scrambled egg on the side for some extra protein! Service was friendly and quick on a week day, and there were plenty of open tables. read more

We entered Breakaway Carrboro on a snowy brunch time (around 11:30 AM); no one seemed to notice or care when we entered. The restaurant was about as small as a typical cafe; dining spaces look fine for breakfast. Looked like a chill place for breakfast;, we didn't have trouble finding parking on the side of the building. As soon as we sat, we checked the breakfast section of the menu, and the only item I was interested in was the breakfast burrito; my girl didn't seem to find the kind of Benedict she was looking for in the menu. Enjoyed an early Birthday breakfast here. I was pleased to know they offered gluten free bread with the eggs Benedict. I really enjoyed this dish. The eggs were poached medium and the sauce was creamy and delish. The Canadian bacon was good and the bread was toasted nicely. I also chose a side salad of greens vs potatoes. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and there's shade so it's a relaxing. The staff were nice and friendly. read more

Wow! I ate breakfast here with my mom while visiting my parents (they live in chapel hill). She said "that was the best breakfast of my life." I'm turning 50 this year so you can imagine my mom has had a number of breakfast experiences before this. I agree that the food and coffee were amazing! Mom enjoyed a vanilla buttermilk pancake, over easy eggs (I'd call them over medium since they had runny yolks and set whites) and a rasher of bacon. I got a cheddar scramble with salad greens on the side. Mom enjoyed a chocolate hazelnut latte and I got the maple with oat milk. I like my lattes less sweet and "half sweet" was perfect for me. The space is airy but cozy, the chairs were super comfy and the vibe is really pleasant. The staff were all very friendly and patient. Our service was prompt and attentive. I wish I was local! Breakaway was a last minute brunch stop for us! The cappuccinos were creamy and not too sweet! Amy's breakfast scramble was a great blend of savory and salty with the olives. We had an offer from a local discount dining club and came on a Wednesday evening since we were told weekend brunch is pretty busy. Parking was a little tight but we found a space. The decor is simple and clean, with indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were friendly. We enjoyed the tofu banh mi sandwiches and french fries. It seems their dinner menu is limited to a few choices. The only minor thing was that the restaurant was not crowded and it seemed to take a long time to get our sandwiches. If you love diarrhea, this is your place. It kicks in just six hours after your meal. I recommend the sausage and cheddar omelette drenched in whatever greasy organic concoction they use. It's a great way to lose three pounds in 24 hours. And the reverse-pay/tip method is awesome; you have to pay and tip before you can be served. Gratuity isn't based on service. It's based on a promise of service. What will happen after you pay and tip is that you have to get your own water, you take your seat, someone will drop off your food, and they will never check in on you again. The 2003 hipster-grunge era vibe is a solid cringe. Good luck everyone! read more

We've eaten there twice. The grilled chicken on the first occasion was very good, seared on the outside but juicy. On the second occasion, it was barely cooked and the bread was doughy and nearly untoasted. The tofu banh mi had tasty vegetables but the tofu was almost inedible; it tasted raw and was slathered with some weird unsavory brown sauce. The salmon on my wife's salmon sandwich was old and tasted off. The pecan bar I had for desert was very good. Sadly, we won't return. There are a dozen better restaurants within a five minute walk. read more

Pretty good latte served quickly, baked goods from Durham's 9th St bakery like most others in Carrboro can be delicious sometimes with the usual markup. Today's experience here was awful: the "omelette" seems to have been made by someone who only knows how fry eggs, was not beaten for fluff but merely folded over sausage and swimming in oil like the different servings of my companions. About the worst I have ever had. Will be going to Chapel Hill Breadman's breakfast from now on because Carrboro offerings are seemingly overpriced duds. read more

I previously had such a bad experience there that I had not gone in ages. But I had an out of country guest and we were going on a trip. Since it was on the I decided to try Breakaway again. Our order was placed for the two of us and only one breakfast was delivered to the table. When asked how long the other would be the answer was "there was no other". Two coffees had been served however. We had to wait until mine was delivered which was pancakes and they were raw dough. They need to get their act together. They did however, comp the late breakfast. Has Breakaway be sold during the Covid pandemic? I had frequently ate at Breakaway at least once a week in the past. read more

I haven't written a review in ages but I was scrolling and was disheartened by the low score of this restaurant. This is my favorite brunch spot in the Triangle. I always drive the 30 minutes from Durham to grab brunch here at the Carborro location because the food is reliably good - the menu isn't anything inventive but it's standard brunch fare and they have a really nice pastry case and great coffee and a fabulous lavender oat milk latte if that happens to be your drink of choice. I love their pancakes - they add a hint of vanilla and you can get chocolate chips if you want! The interior is well decorated, bright and airy and clean feeling. There is a LGBTQ flag and it feels like a safe space which is awesome (and what'd you'd expect in this lovely area). I've taken many friends here and my very conservative dad and everyone in my life has enjoyed the space, their meals and felt welcome. It's a good spot - give it a try. Not sure what these negative reviews are on about but they must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. There is also a couple of great plant stores near by - Southern States and Fifth Season Gardening just a short walk away if you want to check out some indoor or outdoor plants and tons of breweries to grab a beer to make the perfect lazy Saturday or Sunday post brunch hang with friends or family! read more

I love this place! As a whole food plant-based (largely vegan) consumer, one of my favorite things to order is to customize my own breakfast burrito - instead of egg, I ask for Tofu Scramble in a wrap (amazingly seasoned scrambled tofu + roasted peppers, onions, mushrooms and potatoes), with avocado mash. It seems that the cook is related to Seinfeld's soup Nazi you ask for eggs to be done hard and they come out running every time and I was just there this morning ordered pancakes. They came out cold. I had to ask to waitress for syrup and butter, she went back to the kitchen never came out. I had to go get her and she said she forgot meanwhile, I had cold pancakes, it was another bad experience I walked out I don't think I'll ever go back. read more

Every time I visit Carrboro I stop by Breakaway a couple of times. It's a super cute coffee & brunch spot. I've had their egg sandwich, pancakes, cookies, and a variety of pastries. My partner and I both LOVE the muffins & scones. The muffins are always soft and moist, packed full of yummy bits and pieces, and have crispy crumble toppings. Whoever is making the pastries is an artist. All of their coffee drinks are consistently great. As a bonus, the staff play good music creating a nice atmosphere. read more

They run this shady hustle, firstly over charging for "self serve" coffee refills, and when you head over to the line formed at the coffee dispensary, the local urchin waitstaff come and begin busing your table and clearing up your 3/4ths unfinished, barely a bite taken, $35 plate of breakfast! Other patrons plates stacked on top of your still warm pancakes, butter and syrup dripping down the side. The service Tip is built into the check out counter before hand, so there is no recourse or incentive for the braindead staff to improve their hospitality or behavior. Don't fall for this scam shack!! My only choice is to boycott forever and give them a disparaging remark, when mentioned as a now non-option, in polite discussion for over priced breakfast dives. The food was decent, but I'll never return. Yes, the one near Pittsboro is even worse. read more

Tried to order a healthy breakfast here this morning and was really disappointed. They had a veggie omelette, but they choose what goes in it each day and today was feta & spinach. I didn't want cheese and I was told I couldn't substitute anything for the feta. It was suggested that I "build my own" breakfast, but there weren't normal things on the list to add to an omelette, only larger sides...So when I asked for egg whites with spinach and tomatoes I was told I couldn't do it. I settled on a side of plain egg whites, but they were drenched in oil when they arrived and I had to use the side of my napkin to sop up the excess. I ordered a side of greens and some breakfast potatoes to go with the eggs. The greens were beautiful and the potatoes looked like they were going to be delicious and crispy, but when I took a bite they ended up being kind of soggy and a bit cold like they had been cooked using too much oil and left to sit too long. On the plus side, the person taking my order was nice and did his best to help me order given I couldn't modify the veggie omelette to actually make it a veggie omelette and substitute tomatoes or another veggie for the feta. The rest of the staff were also nice and my latte was also very good. $21 for what turned out to be a dull, oily, normal portioned breakfast and a latte wasn't worth it though and I don't think I'll be back. read more
