Nice ambience with a cute screened in garden space. Service was friendly and pretty fast. However, it's very much "American inspired" French food so not a place to have classic french dishes - menu (for brunch) seemed to be a mix of southern, mexican, french options. Price is very reasonable for the portion and the atmosphere. I would recommend it to people who are looking for a casual & elegant brunch while not craving for a specific kind of food.

My partner and I came with another couple after an event in chapel hill. I was impressed that there was no wait and there was a lot of parking close (had to pay per hour). I had the GOAT Bloody Mary, which was very good. I felt meh about the grilled cheese but the rest was great! I had the chicken and waffles and my partner had the brunch squatch. The chicken and waffles was really good! The waffle was just okay but the chicken was bomb! My partner's food was on the cooler side was his biggest complaint. It was a lot of food! I tried the grits and didn't love them, but I'm not a huge grits fan. It was also super cute inside and had a huge bar. I loved the vibe of the decor and set up. Over all, I'd say go back for the chicken and waffles and bloody Mary's! Everything else was meh and I'd order something different next time.

We visited La Res last evening, as part of a wedding rehearsal party of twenty or so persons. In a word, the staff was "attentive." As folks were arriving, they were discretely directed to the bar, where various vintages had just been poured. Beer and other alcohol were poured to order. This really cut down wait time, and increased time to socialize! (I wish I'd noted the label of the pinot noir they served - it was excellent!) We were given discretionary time to mingle - that is to say, the tables were ready, they were waiting on us. When we did finally move into those two rooms up front, the wait staff was prepared. They were prompt yet unobtrusive; refreshing wine glasses and other beverages and taking orders seamlessly. (I would guess they had enough staff to wait on our group - I say this only because our young man was present whenever we needed him and as soon as we needed him, but kept more or less out of sight when we didn't.) Although there were varied dishes on our Prix fixe menu, I can only comment about the quality of what I had. To start, there was gazpacho. It was complex enough to make me smile! You could taste the individual flavors, so clearly it had been made fresh. The beef tenderloin over mashed potatoes with asparagus and carrots was done to perfection! I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore, so when I do have it, I want the top-of-the-line stuff... and this was it! Beautifully marbled, tender and juicy. The asparagus was a bit on the large side, and the potatoes were just okay... but the overall impression was that I'd had an excellent meal. The groom's cake for dessert (carrot cake with cream cheese icing) was very tasty indeed, and the cappuccino was expertly made. I've been in the area for almost 20 years now, and this was my first visit to La Res. I'm looking forward to a return visit later this summer, to see what their service is like for smaller or more intimate groups.

I came here for an event and so they had a special menu set up for us, and gave us a private room. The staff was very friendly and had great timing when serving the 3 courses. I ordered a salad to start, with mixed greens, wonderful candies walnuts and vinegarette dressing. My entree was a pumpkin risotto with cheese and cranberries, a strange combination but surprisingly wonderful because all of the flavors complimented each other. I ordered a creme brûlée for desert that was wonderful, just sweet enough to not be too much, and a well done caramelized top. Overall great experience, and a little funny because I normally go to La Rez at 1am on weekends.

UPDATE: Had my wedding rehearsal dinner here 3 days ago. They've learned how to make a dirty martini since last time, and the arrangements were very nice. They gave us our own room (with full bar) in the back so we could gather before dinner, and the appetizers were tasty and the waitstaff were right on the spot to help. They even helped us stall for time when a couple of the guests were late! Dinner went very smoothly, and all of the guests appeared to enjoy their meals (vegetarians and meatasauruses alike). We had the choice of tenderloin, salmon, or polenta, all of which were nicely presented. And I don't know where the restaurant gets their baked goods, but the carrot cake for dessert was *seriously* good. Hats off to my new father-in-law for choosing La Res for the dinner! ================ ORIGINAL REVIEW: I admit it: I judge places by how well they listen when I order a very dirty martini, house gin, with olives. La Res didn't pass the test--almost no "dirt" in the one I got last Saturday night. Bah. After a bit too long of a wait, my dining companions ordered appetizers--one got the sweet potato gnocchi; the other, the house salad. Both of them were just fine, they said. Then two of us ordered the venison with roasted root vegetables. The venison was OK and mostly rare, as it's supposed to be, but the vegetables were outstanding (and I hate vegetables). The grouper ordered by the other person was good, too. They finished off with coffee and apple crisp, which they said was very good. La Res is in a renovated bungalow, and it has comfortable seating, a quiet atmosphere, and a good floor plan. We were surprised by how empty the place was on a Saturday night, but maybe that was because of the ACC tournament games going on that day. For the prices La Res charges, I think I'd rather go to Magnolia Grill in Durham, where the food and service are in a league of their own.

Lastnight, our family ate dinner there only to get sick from the muscles. 3 of us shared the muscles appetizer, which tasted great, but the three of us that ate the muscles ended up sick for a few hours later that evening and and next morning. Everyone else in the dinner party that had not eaten the muscles was fine. The service staff was over-extended. We had to ask the busing staff to get our waiter so that we could order and later in the meal to refresh our beverages. And finally, our dinner party was seated in the very furtherest back room that features an exit door with a large lit up exit sign over it. The room was not really fit to seat people at that price point. There are no sound buffers in the back room. It is akin to a large storage area with artwork on the wallks. There was no way to hear anyone talking at the table due to the roar of the sound bouncing off the walls. The room should not be used for seating at Tandem's price point. I rarely if ever give a bad review, but last night was really disappointing. My family came from Raleigh to join us and we had come over from Hillsborough. We were treating our parents out to a nice dinner - or at least that was the expectation. Otherwise the food was very good.

The menu prices seemed a tiny bit high until I read the note that the restaurants had raised the menu prices to make gratuity "truly optional," so that's totally fine. We started off our meal with some complimentary bread, which was honestly pretty mediocre. It was a very tiny portion and the accompanying olive oil just tasted like... olive oil. It felt like the bread was store-bought or something, which isn't the end of the world, but combined with the portion size, it was just a little surprising for a nice restaurant. For my entree, I got the steak frites, and they were very good! The steak was cooked medium rare as requested. I also got some truffle aioli on the side (suggested by the food busser!) and it was pretty tasty too. My wife got the beet and kale lasagna and she really enjoyed it, although it wasn't really enough food as an entree :) Beer selection was OK but nothing crazy good. I asked for the non-alcoholic IPA and they were out of it, which was kind of a bummer. Also, when we were paying our bill, the automated system still asked us for a gratuity without any warning about the gratuity being baked into the menu prices, so that was a little surprising but not a huge deal. Overall, I liked Glasshalfull and would definitely consider coming back.

I sincerely appreciate the choice of vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore options for the tasting menu -- that's quite special. You somewhat go in blind as to what you'll be served, which I really appreciate. For the omnivore tasting menu, there was a lot of seafood used, which I loved. The space is modern and elegant but still cozy, with soft lighting, subtle earth tones, and an open layout that balances intimacy and energy. Service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive, informed, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Let's get into the food, because this was one of the most exciting and consistently excellent meals we've had in a long time. We started with They Might Be Tostones, a clever and beautifully layered dish with Murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimentón crema, and chili crisp. It was punchy, bright, and balanced. The Warm Rustic Baguette with whipped butter and sea salt may seem simple, but it was divine, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for lingering. Dirt Candy, a medley of seasonal vegetables with toasted pistachio ail lade, was vibrant and thoughtfully composed. The Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio with red miso-citrus bagna cauda and delicate shoots was fresh and refined, with a perfect acidity and richness. We moved on to heartier plates like the Ricotta Gnocchi with Italian sausage, peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, and chili flake. The gnocchi were pillowy and deeply flavorful. The Kabocha Squash & Farro with lump crab, pancetta, and miso butter was savory, slightly sweet, and full of texture. The Pan Roast with flounder, mussels, fregula, and smoky shellfish sugo was bold and briny, with layers of flavor in every bite. Two pasta dishes also stood out, the Ravioli di Manzo with Barolo-braised beef and Parmigiano was rich and comforting, while the Plin Piemontese, filled with pasture-raised pork and finished in crema di parmigiano, was elegant and silky. For dessert, we shared all three options and each one brought something different. The Citrus plate with steamed lemon pudding and lemon curd was light, tart, and texturally playful. The Cheesecake with maple mascarpone and cranberry compote was creamy, nutty, and not overly sweet. But the star was the Chocolate Fondant, extra dark, gooey, with salted caramel gelato and hazelnut crumble. An absolutely unforgettable finish. OakLeaf is a standout. Every dish felt thoughtful, seasonal, and beautifully executed. We will absolutely be back.

The star of the show in my opinion were the hush puppies and the corn and wild mushroom risotto. There were sooo many different flavors that perfectly complemented each other. I was blown away. And the pig cheek on top was incredible. 500/10. Our server made great recommendations! Then-- chaos and heartbreak ensued in the form of a fire alarm. We were forced to evacuate the restaurant as the fire department arrived , leaving about half our meal on the table. After 30 or so minutes of waiting out in the cold (we were apparently the only guests who hadn't paid out yet) our server came to find us. He asked us if we wanted to just give him our credit card information and he would ring us up later, when the fire department gave them the ok, as he understood not wanting to wait around. It broke our heart to leave our leftovers, but we agreed and went to go get the car. Thankfully we are stubborn.. and optimistic to a fault. And by the third time we circled around the block, the fire truck was pulling away. I ran in and asked if there was any chance our food hadn't been thrown away yet, and it hadn't! The staff was happy we had been able to come back, and they packed everything up for us, even taking the hush puppies off the bill and sneaking in a complimentary piece of key lime pie. I'm so glad we were able to tip our server appropriately for his great service-- and rescue our leftovers. Happy ending. All was well. I opted for the blackened salmon, and my friend got the watermelon salad and tomato plate to share. The wait for food wasn't that long, but once they arrived, they were beautiful. Vibrant, full of color, plates of food that I was dying to dig into. The salmon was a pretty small piece (I was expecting a larger portion) and was on top of black beans and cheese grits. The salmon had a green sauce on top which complemented each aspect of the dish very well. I loved eating a bite of everything together. The tomato plate special was also good, but nothing sensational. It's literally just tomatoes with oil on them, but I guess they tasted fresh. I probably wouldn't come back, but this was a good meal nonetheless.

I enjoy cheese plates, and this one was great, but I can understand it may not be for everyone. My wife ordered the Red Fish, which had a more Southeast Asian-inspired twist to it. It came over rice and pickled onions and beets, and the flavors were a blend of lemongrass and coconut. The fish was cooked well - nice and tender, not too dry - and the flavors went well together. I ordered the New York Strip, which was delicious - the meat was well cooked, had great flavor, and was a generous portion that was very filling.
