I went with a friend to their afternoon tea on Sunday - they offer it 2:30 - 4 only. This place is posh! Which is to be expected since it is located in the Washington Duke Inn. We had to book our reservations ahead of time and also paid ahead of time - $70 per person. The staff was gracious and attentive. The food was delicious and the tea was probably some of the favorite that I've had. I don't necessarily know if it was worth the price though. The food was good but I was hoping, based on cost, that it would have been a more substantial offering. All in all, it's a fun place to go and have an afternoon outing with friends. read more

Booked afternoon tea to celebrate 2 birthdays and do a fun girls outing. All of the sandwiches and desserts were delicious - freshly made and flavors were well paired. They also gave us 2 pieces of cake at the end to celebrate our birthdays, which at that point we were so full and already on a sugar high but we appreciated the gesture and the cakes were great! It wasn't busy when we went and they don't rush you at all. You do have to prepay so just beware of that and make sure to communicate ahead of time if your plans change. After many visits, I have come to like this restaurant. It seems to pretend fancier than it is. But it is pretty fancy. I bet you can wear anything you please, but, I mean, dress nicely for your fellow diners. Service is consistently a little slow, but that beats being rushed. I've never met an afternoon tea I didn't like, and Fairview didn't change that. I loved the assortment of sweet and savory, which I thought was a nice balance. I loved that we got two flavors of scones, and getting clotted cream is always a pleasure. The little jam jars are adorable and you can't go wrong with bonne maman. The only thing that slightly disappointed me was that there wasn't a jasmine tea on the menu, but there were a lot of great options to choose from and I found something else I enjoyed. The service was great and the vibes were classy but not stuffy. They even gave me a special birthday plate! The price was pretty midrange and I thought it was fair. Always a lovely spot for lunch when visiting a friend from Duke. Reservations were easy to make and wide open. The staff is polite and the whole experience is lovely. This restaurant is located inside the Duke Inn & golf club and it is wonderful. Once you step in , it is a beautiful elegant decor , transports you to earlier years and the service is top notch. To start I had the Brussel sprouts and artisan salad - the Brussel sprouts had a sweetness to it that was amazing !!! For entree I had the short rib rigatoni - the meat just melted in your mouth and the sauce was incredible. Everything was so good I could not leave without dessert . Made a reservation for the Fairview, knowing nothing about it except that it was in Duke University's campus. Parking is a breeze and there is plenty of it. You can even valet, if that's your jam. The restaurant is towards the back of the hotel and since it is December, it is decorated beautifully. They literally have Christmas trees in every corner. Service was impeccable from checking in, to checking out. Very professional, very top notch. You would bring someone here to impress them. We were a party of three and were seated in a booth, which was perfect for us. They had someone playing the piano, which was a nice touch. Our food came out in a good amount of time and everything was a good temperature and tasted delicious. We did have dessert and the serving size of that was just right. The soup was small but a good appetizer size (wish there was more seafood in it), the filet mignon was fantastic though the greens were a bit salty, and the dessert was very filling to end off the meal. So I came here because I thought the reviews were good. When we got here, although it's an old building..it's very antique. The appetizer was a warm pimento cheese and some Crackers which was pretty good. My husband got the ribeye melt which sucked. And I got the crab cakes which also sucked. It was the same seasoning on both of them. The crab cake was really dry. Although the manager took it off the check and offered to make us another one, I just didn't want it. And thankfully we didn't take it home because both me and my husband have an upset stomach now. For dessert, they gave my husband a warm brownie with ice cream for his birthday and the coffee creme brûlée which was absolutely delicious!! I make it up to the Fairview Dining Room at the Washington Duke Inn maybe once a year. It's bit of a drive (about an hour) and it's not inexpensive by any means. But it's a truly a case of getting what you pay for. The ambience is simply lovely and the food is fantastic. I met my sister there for lunch yesterday. She ordered the chopped salad; although that may sound pretty routine, she said it was the best version she'd ever had and it was beautifully presented. Even *more* beautifully presented was my "Duke of Crabcake" entree. As a native Marylander, I am super-picky about crabcakes. For starters, most of them are heavily breaded. I knew from a prior visit to this venue (almost five years ago), however, that the Fairview kitchen knows their way around a crabcake. It was absolutely perfect. A sweet potato, corn and bacon hash surrounded it; although I initially ignored it, assuming it largely served a decorative purpose, I was hap-hap-happy to discover that it was also fabulously good. Our server appeared to be something of a newbie, but she knew what she didn't know (e.g., the wine list) and solicited input from others. Another successful Fairview visit! Their coffee is supplied by ROAR coffee, and the quality truly shines through! I ordered a vanilla oat milk latte, and I can safely say that they give ole Starbies a run for their money! We started off with their weekly rotating housemade pop tart: this weekend, the chef was offering a decadent yet light cookies and cream pop tart. I must say, though: the word "pop-tart" truly doesn't do this flaky treat justice! We followed the pop tart with the Monte Cristo breakfast sandwich and the Quiche of the day. I can safely say that the Monte Cristo sandwich is probably the most ingenious brunch creation that I've ever had the pleasure of sampling. Set between two powdered-sugar dusted brioche pain perdues (French toasts) is a healthy heaping of San Giuseppe capricola, heritage farm Black Forest ham, Lusty Monk Mustard, cave-aged gruyère, lingonberry jam, and dukes Mayo. Personally, I'm not much of a mustard person and so I tried half the sandwich without the mustard and half with a light layer of it, and it's incredible how much of a difference even a slight amount of mustard makes! We also tried the quiche of the day, which featured prosciutto ham, tomatoes, and onions. The quiche is fresh made every morning, and positively dissolved in your mouth. It was incredibly flavorful and provided a nice balance to the sweet Monte Cristo sandwich All in all, the dining experience at the Fairview was exceptional, and our waiter was very knowledgeable and absolutely fantastic. Menu Bait & Switch This restaurant is our 'go-to' restaurant for very special occasions -- milestone occasions like 20th Anniversary, Law School graduation, and last evening, our daughter's 30th birthday. So, imagine our surprise when we sit down at the table to find their usual stellar menu swapped out for a "Game-Day" menu. Yes, that's correct, Duke University SPORTS and their fans merit special menus so they may eat quickly & get to the game in time. Typically a quiet eating venue, the dining room was packed & noisy with these exuberant fans. Few of the dishes we'd seen on their regular menu transferred to this eat & run menu. Let's not be fooled -- their high prices remained the same, but dinner entrees were replaced with burger & sandwich options. The look of disappointment on my daughter's face was heartbreaking. See, the thing is, the restaurant gave no forewarning of this change -- neither on their website or in an email to anyone making a reservation for that night. That's just plain wrong. We'll be taking our special occasions elsewhere going forward. (Or make sure to check Duke's sporting event schedule in advance.) Note: I'm giving two stars because their dishes are delicious. Service was insanely slow, dunno where the kitchen is but if it's near the parking lot, they have a lot of ground to cover to get to the dining area. Similar to other reviewers, I have been coming to the Washington Duke for afternoon tea for over 20 years, with my daughter as she grew up and also bringing out of town guests. The quality of the experience has gone up and down over the years. Back in the day I thought it was the best in the area, hands down. Then it went through changes here and there, small special details all of a sudden gone, menu changes (many negative, sorry), I don't know if it has been a money saving thing or what. It was particularly bad after Covid, I think for a while they didn't even have the afternoon tea service. Anyway, we have stuck with them because even with the changes it is still a generally lovely experience, particularly around the holidays. We went today with family members from out of state. I will say that they seem to be making an effort. Though they are renovating and the seating is in a small stuffy area, the tea and food was on point. There was an excellent lemon bar that stood out - so tart and delicious. The scones were warm and fresh, and I personally like the individual servings of clotted cream and lemon curd so I didn't have to worry about getting enough. What made the visit outstanding was the service we received. Our server, Abagail, was terrific. She is what made the experience special. She came with more hot water before we even realized we wanted it, and checked on us with more water numerous times. Honestly I think the offering of more hot water can make or break an afternoon tea outing and she killed it! She was friendly and helpful and somehow appeared any time we had a need without anybody having to look around for her. The is a must go to in Durham. Right near the Duke Campus, this historic establishment was an excellent place to have dinner. Now during this pandemic, we have felt very uneasy about eating out. This place has extremely high standards for their employees as well as their guests. Mask have to be worn at all times unless you are eating or drinking. Even when your waiter comes up to the table everyone needs to be masked. Excellent safety protocols. Now let's get to the food!! The food is delicious. We had the warm pimento cheese dip which comes with crackers and homemade pickles. A must have. We also had the onion dip and homemade chips. Also delicious!! For our entrees, we had a pork chop which was extremely juicy and perfect. We also had their chicken dish which was great. It also had sweet potato mashed and another vegetable that I can't remember. I've been coming here since 2006, and the only thing that has changed that I have to use "real money" instead of campus FoodPoints nowadays. I can always count on Fairvew Dining room to offer the best service, food quality, and college nostalgia! We came here for Saturday lunch during Triangle Restaurant Week after making reservations. It happened to be game day (UVA vs. Duke) so it was fun people-watching all the guests at the Washington Duke Inn and milling about the bar area too. Restaurant week had a set menu. For appetizers, we both got the Waduke shrimp, corn, & bacon chowder, which was on point with the flavors and texture. Hubby got the Duke Dip (sirloin, caramelized onions, white cheddar, horseradish creme), which had tender beef stacked high on crispy bread, and a side of French fries. I got the carnitas, shrimp & anson mills grits which came with black beans and pork carnitas. I loved the rich and complex flavors but the grits were a little chunky instead of creamy. Dessert was a little cookie sampler to go, which we devoured later at home. Each box included 2 chocolate chip cookies, 2 shortbread cookies, and a coconut macaroon. Our waiter was great and brought us a baby high chair, and even remembered my note in our reservation that it was my husband's birthday---the pianist started playing "Happy Birthday" as the waiter brought out a complimentary petite chocolate cake with "Happy birthday" written on a piece of chocolate. This review is for the afternoon tea only. My friends got me a gift certificate here for afternoon tea for my birthday. They know I love afternoon tea and this place has a great reputation. The day of tea we tried to call to add a friend to the reservation, no one picked up. We figured since we were already a party of three adding one more person wouldn't be a big deal. We were wrong. Apparently they only make the exact amount of tea sandwiches and can't accommodate an additional person. I understand the concept of having a head count, but what if you accidentally drop one on the floor. Does that mean that person with a reservation can't have it now? It just seems a little crazy that they don't even make one extra set. Okay though, that was our fault for adding an extra person, not theirs. Although odd, I'm not faulting them for that since that was our fault. They sat us in the back corner near a large party. It was sooooooo loud we had to yell to talk. There were seats open on the other side of the restaurant so I'm not sure why they sat us on that side, when we were the only ones on that side besides the party. Not a relaxing afternoon tea atmosphere at all. Our server was very friendly in the beginning, but then once the food arrived he literally disappeared for forty minutes. At that point our tea had been on the table for well over an hour and no one had come by to offer to refill the hot water. After flagging down a waiter and expressing our displeasure with the way the tea was going instead of apologizing he just sent over another waiter to fill our tea, I'm guessing so he wouldn't have to deal with it anymore. I thought for sure they would send a manager over to apologize for the situation, but no one every came by. Overall while it does seem like a great atmosphere the tea experience was more of a mess than enjoyable for us. read more

Before I share this review, I would like to preface that my family and I have been enjoying Afternoon Tea at Washing Duke Inn & Golf Club for close to 20 years. I've experienced small shifts in tea service during and post pandemic, understandably. During the summers, my family from Texas visits me and one of our favorite pastimes is Afternoon Tea. I recently noticed a slight change in the Fairview's Afternoon Tea presentation on my July 21st visit. Despite the change, my cousin and I had a lovely experience. A week after that visit, on July 28th, I treated my niece and mother to tea. As I mentioned, they are visiting from Texas and it is one of their favorite things to do when visiting NC. When our server brought our tea, she failed to bring milk for my tea. When she brought the tray of tea sandwiches, pastries, and scones, she did not bring the Devonshire cream or lemon curd. In fact, after she brought the tray of foods, she never came back again. We had to ask another server for help and she graciously brought us the milk, Devonshire cream and lemon curd. As I mentioned, we never saw our server again. As such, no one offered us additional hot water for our tea. My mother, pointed that out to me and vividly noticed the change in service. Last, because our server was not to be found, another server came forward to bring us our check. We had been waiting for 15-20 minutes for someone to come over with the check. I am disappointed not for me, but for my mother and niece who were looking forward to afternoon tea all week. I was deeply disappointed in the service. While this is tea service, patrons should be checked on to ensure they have all they need including extra water for tea. Last, I do have to mention that the pastry team did give us three pomegranate scones that were burnt. I would have mentioned this to our server had she come over to check on us. Prior to posting this review, I contacted the Fairview Dining Room and no one confirmed receipt of my email nor did they offer an apology. I am truly disappointed by this experience. I have always shared with friends and family that the Fairview dining Room has one of the most exceptional afternoon tea experiences in North Carolina and the US. Fairview was a good choice for weekend brunch with my friend. Their weekend brunch is three courses: appetizer (several options to choose from), entree, and dessert at their dessert bar. They also served warm mini croissants and biscuits (yum!). I had the corn & bacon chowder, the corned beef skillet with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, and helped myself to a few desserts after. (Total came out to about $27 before tax.) The corn & bacon chowder was pretty good but I would've wanted it to have more flavor. I enjoyed the corned beef skillet, but the potatoes that I opted for as a side had an interesting sweet syrup flavor mixed in that I wasn't a fan of. Lots of options for dessert, so you can pick what you want. I had bread pudding, chocolate-covered strawberries, a pink marshmallow, etc. Although it's a fancy restaurant and my friend and I dressed up for it, I did see some people wearing pretty casual attire for brunch as well. I really enjoyed my afternoon tea experience at the Fairview Dining Room this afternoon. I went with a very large group of people (16 people), and we had a reserved table for us in the middle of the dining room. I believe you have to have reservations, so make sure to call in advance! When we were all seated, we each chose a tea from the menu. There is a classic tea option, which comes with tea and the entire food set, as well as a royal tea option which comes with tea, food, and champagne. We all went with the classic tea option. I chose the Tea of Good Tidings, which was a holiday spiced black tea, and I really liked it! It was very fragrant, but not too strong or bitter with the black tea taste. I also liked how we each got an individual kettle and honey! The only complaint I had about the tea was that it only seeped well for one hot water pouring in the kettle. My second seeping of the tea was barely flavored. I was surprised that it didn't last through at least two water pours. The food was amazing and so pretty! We started off with a blueberry and walnut scone that literally came out hot, fresh out of the oven. We had three different spread for the scones, including a lemon spread, jam, and butter. We were then given a three tier food set with sandwiches and deviled eggs on top, a cheese, financier and panna cotta plate, and a dessert plate with macaroons, truffles, and other chocolate goodies. Overall, the food was really good, and well-presented. My only reason for not giving my afternoon tea experience 5 stars is because we each paid a set price for the tea, so I expected each of use to be able to try each different food that was on the plates. We, however, did not have enough food for each person to get at least one of each type of food, which was disappointing because we had to pick and choose and didn't get to just try everything. I'm not sure if they automatically have a set number for each plate, but they knew how many people we had, so it would have been nice to have had at least enough food for each person to try each type. read more

Fairview is one of few places that consistently delivers a five star experience across food, ambiance and service. It's an elegant and classy dining room and every thing is spotless clean. The booths are great, rounded style and very comfortable and spacious. They have a very extensive premium wine list with the kind of wines I cannot afford. I did find a reasonably priced glass of Riesling that I quite enjoyed. Your are served two kinds of complimentary breads baked by Guglhopf bakery (I don't know how to spell or pronounce this business name and usually just refer to it as Gluff gluff). The cheesey type of bread is really good. Along with your bread your are served a small spoon of gouda cheese, squash and truffles. It's literally not even baby size portion, but of course we all know truffles is very expensive. Those trained pigs sniffing them out of the ground make big bucks. Most recently we had the airline chicken and shrimp and grits. I don't know why they call it airline chicken, because it's certainly better than airline food. As always most importantly with chicken, not anything close to being dry. Served with a big block of herb butter on top as your sauce. You get to pick a side included with the chicken. Even better though was the shrimp and grits. Very filling and comes with five big size shrimps. The mixed in okra and cheese was quite tasty. Ended the meal with the Molten chocolate cake served with elderberry ice cream and white chocolate covered rice puffs and I think marinated plum slices. Service is always friendly and with a smile. The only thing I didn't like was the blowing AC bringing the temperatures to meat locker level. They tried to fix it a few times and by the time I was ready to cut the evening short, the manager was kind enough to bring out a very comfy blanket, without us even asking. Fairview Dining Room is great for the times you want to celebrate special ocassions, get out of your shorts and dress up a bit for dinner. Came here with a group of colleagues for dinner and had a very nice experience. The restaurant is nicely decorated and similar to the rest of the Washington Duke Hotel. We were seated promptly at our reservation time (we had a group of 12) ordered a few bottles of wine for the table. There were a few things on the menu that caught my attention but I ended up going with the 13oz ribeye. The steak was pretty good, cooked perfectly medium rare as I asked for. I thought that it was a little under seasoned, but they put a large cut of herb butter which adds some flavor. If you're not a fan of butter on your steak though, you'll probably want to add a little salt. I got charred brussels sprouts on the side (comes with one side) and they were really delicious. Overall, it's a nice restaurant inside a very nice hotel. The prices are not too crazy for an upscale dining experience. read more

I ordered the scallop dish and it was FANTASTIC; I had risotto as my side and it was super flavorful! It was one of my favorite meals I've had. Our server also brought us complementary appetizers (from the chef) as well as complementary dessert to honor our special occasion. I would rate the food a 9.9/10 (my dish, that is). Fairview was my favorite place to eat as an undergraduate at Duke. When I was there, you could eat there using campus Food Points, so I ate there like twice a week. Dinner is good, but the options aren't super exciting unless you're into red meat. Brunch is by far their best and most consistently tasty offering, especially the endless dessert table! Afternoon tea is lovely as well. If tables are full at Fairview, you can also walk a few steps over to the Bull Durham Bar, which overs a similar but limited menu with a more casual but similarly nice atmosphere. Overall, great atmosphere and superb customer service - the staff are super friendly, accommodating, and hospitable, especially the host William and server Nathaniel. This was lovely! I attended a high tea with my mom and sister, as a gift to them for birthday/Christmas. The restaurant was super attentive as far as asking me about any dietary preferences several times in advance. The service was also as good as it gets! You get a LOT of food, too. When it arrived, my mom said "I think we can eat it all without getting too full." She was wrong- we couldn't finish nearly everything! Even though the portions are so thoughtful- we had exactly three of everything on our tiered stand so we could all try everything. The tea itself was delicious, and the server brought us more hot water as we leisurely chatted and enjoyed each others' company. Also, I mentioned that it was my mom and sister's birthdays this month, and they received these adorable plated with mini chocolate cakes, ice cream, and a candle! So delicious, so thoughtful! They were blown away. Too full to finish all the food though. :) This was my second time doing tea at the Fairview and I was impressed both times. Needed breakfast after a night in the hospital. The eggs were powdered or poured from a carton not real. The hashbrown was soaked in grease. All the drinks were diet or sugar free which a doctor said to avoid. Staff was friendly and place was clean. Ambiance was fine for what it was. read more

Before dinner: easy to make reservation and the staff did read my additional comments. It was my boyfriend's birthday and everyone welcomed us with a 'happy birthday.' Super friendly staff. Dinner: Nice setting, very warm + old vibes. Mood lighting. We got a 3 course meal (I got the Dinner at Dusk 3-course meal for $35 and my boyfriend got food off the regular menu. Both turned out to be about the same price so it doesn't really matter too much which you choose). Pre-Course: Amuse-bouche (shown in photo). Very delicious pre-appetizer. We also got bread and butter. The small biscuits were really good and we asked for more! Course 1: I got the Spring Salad which was really yummy and a decent size. I expected it to be smaller. My boyfriend got the shrimp, corn, and bacon chowder which was smaller but since it's creamier it was still filling, especially as an appetizer. Again, delicious. Course 2: I got the Jasmine & Local Honey Steelhead Salmon. OH MY GOODNESS. SO GOOD. BEST SALMON I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE!!! So flavorful and the brussel sprouts were a wonderful addition to the dish. I wasn't a fan of the butter on the salmon but I managed to scrape most of it off. My boyfriend got the Chesapeake Lump Crabcakes. THESE WERE SO WONDERFUL AND FLAVORFUL IT MADE MY SALMON TASTE BLAND. Would HIGHLY recommend. NOTE: The dinner at dusk menu only comes with ONE crabcake but you can get 2 off the regular dinner menu. Honestly, if you get an appetizer you really only need one. Two was a LOT even though it was delicious. Course 3: My meal came with dessert which was very good. Small, but definitely enough. My boyfriend ordered a cappuccino off the dessert menu which was as good as dessert coffee gets. The staff was also really kind and made him a special, complimentary birthday dessert plate with a candle and happy birthday message. Very kind. My birthday was a few days before his and they gave me my OWN complimentary birthday platter too! So we basically had 3 plates of dessert. Very filling meal (too filling lol) and SO WONDERFUL. Really made my boyfriend's birthday (and my belated birthday) special. read more

Excellent food, attentive service, nice ambiance.

Had an a la carte 3 course meal. Really delicious. The service was great as usual. The butternut squash soupe du jour was really creamy, rich in taste and filling. As an entree the crab cake was ok. A bit too salty for me and the sauce had a bit of a spice to it. The vegetables were great though and the celery really added that crunch to the plate. As a dessert the sweet potato donuts were very good and very sweet covered in cinnamon sugar, accompanied by a very sweet meringue.
