Shaking beef
Lloyd M.

Returned for the first time in over ten years (had moved overseas for eight of the years) and it has not missed a beat. I would describe the menu as modern Asian but the most important thing is everything is excellent. Started by sharing two dishes with my daughter. We both loved the salad. The lettuce wraps were okay but probably the one thing I would not order again; they just lacked flavor. The true highlight was the shaking beef, cooked perfectly medium rare (without having to ask) with a perfect sauce, it was simply great. Tempted to order dessert but was too full, until next time.

The steak was good as well as the bento box. We also had the shrimp which was so so, the pork dumplings which were great and ended with the chocolate cake and ice cream. The service was incredible

From the moment you step foot inside, the Lantern staff and ambiance delivered. Great place for date night, my wife and I tried a variety of dishes and we fully enjoyed each bite along with the bottle of Nebbiolo; which ended pairing well with each course. For starters we sampled the Clara' Salad, Pea Shoot & Scallion Dumplings, Lettuce Cups and Korean Style Fried Cauliflower. Followed by The Shaking Beef entree prepared with caramelized red onions and water cress, I requested it medium. We also had the Lemongrass Grilled Country Pork Rib with perfectly cooked jasmine rice a fried egg and a fresh cucumber mint salad that had a slight hint of spice. Each dish was perfectly cooked and really paired well with the Nebbiolo. We topped of the meal with 2 decadent desserts the Hot Chocolate Cake which had delightfully Toasted coconut pieces. And we thought we would explore and try something unusual so the warm Native Persimmon Pudding was our non-conventional choice and we both agreed it did not disappoint. The service was great, the food quality was outstanding and truly delicious. With 3 kids we don't venture out on dates as often as we like. Therefore, we try to make the best possible choice and I am happy to say Lantern was a true pleasure, moreover, not having any digestive tregrets afterwords was a plus. We will definitely return soon and highly recommend the Lantern restaurant.

This place is a vibe and is the right pick for your next party! 10/10 would recommend :)

Bento box and Salt and pepper shrimp

The Bento box was a fun appetizer and pairing the salt and pepper shrimp was a great move! Good tastes, and fun to eat with my partner! The pork belly was complimented by yummy crisp cabbage and carrots that were full of flavor. The peashoot dumplings didn't live up to the hype, kind of tasteless and a one dimension flavor note....even the pea sauce was salty and missing a lift... maybe a touch of acidity needed! We have been waiting to come here for 6 years and it was a fun menu! Singha beer chased everything down well and the cocktail, the Porchlight, were great complements to the meal. We will come back!

Fried Chicken

We went here for restaurant week, and left having mixed feelings. We started the night with a cocktail that was incredible and a lot of green tea that was also nice. The appetizers were friend chicken which was perfectly crispy and their signature salt a pepper shrimp (a must try) But that's where the positives end. The entrees were a choice of 2 ramens and a vegetarian hotpot. My partner went with the pork tonkotsu and I went with spicy chicken. Both entrees lacked flavor, and left us wishing we had tried a different place. Especially at the price point ($150 for two), it left a lot to be desired. It gets 3 stars for the appetizers and drinks, but skip Lantern for entrees.

New York City level dining--not inexpensive but less than you would have to shell out for this quality in NYC

Bento box is fun and tasty. The drinks were good but not amazing. Not sure if they change their menu much? We enjoyed the relaxed vibe

Lavender Oaks Farm - Lunch, wine

Lavender Oaks Farm

If you ever have the opportunity to attend an event here--don't turn it down!…read more When I was first invited to a wedding here in June, and saw how rustic it was in photos and outdoors, I had grave concerns, but in the end no one got hurt and everyone made it back safely to civilization. The reception area is indoors and a fine place for a party of any type. They serve drinks with Lavender from their farm. They will give you packets of Lavender--it's a real Lavender Farm I will forever have great memories of attending a wedding here. Such a unique place. Some important details you may want to know: 1. Give yourself a minimum of 30 minutes from Chapel Hill to get here--45 minutes during the business week. Slow speed roads, lots of turns, dirt the last section, drive slow. 2. The last 1/2 mile is all dirt gravel--some thick. I had an SUV 4-wheel drive truck rental coincidentally--no problem at all. If I had my personal sports car--PAIN! I may not have gone down the road... If you are flying in for an event here--do yourself a favor and rent a PU Truck or SUV, not a passenger car. If you live here--borrow someones truck--you will thank me. 3. The entire parking lot is gravel--drop everyone off on the reception pavement and one person parks and does the long walk on gravel to the reception--wear appropriate shoes to walk on gravel. I cleaned my shoes for 30 minutes the next day. They have golf carts--if you are concerned about your shoes--ask for golf cart pickup from the parking lot. 4. Men's and women's bathrooms are tiny for a party more than 100 people--get in there when everyone else is not. 5. The outdoor wedding ceremony in June brought tears to my eyes...and sweat to my body--dress appropriately. 6. Spend as much time as you can on the patio outside--it's so pleasant there overlooking the Lavender fields I could sit there every night with a drink. I don't have a review of the food because the food is different for everyone based on budget and who you hire for food provision. I posted some photos of the place, but on the request of the family will not post photos of any attendees, or the wedding couple due to their national celebrity status. I had the opportunity to chat a bit with the owner of Lavender Oaks Farms who is one of the most successful and dynamic entrepreneurs you will meet. Interestingly, she was originally from the Los Angeles area of California but very happy to make a home in North Carolina more than 30 years ago.

They even had a alpaca in a top hat - hard to beat that! However, the thing that stood out most was the genuinely caring staff. I'm embarrassed to say I had a little to much to drink that evening but without going into too much graphic detail I will just say that the staff went above and beyond to make sure I got back to my hotel safely. They even drove me back in their own vehicles and made a point to text my fiance in order to check up on me the next day. I would highly recommend this venue for all your event needs, you and your guests will definitely be in great hands.

Email I sent to Brenda Leeper,…read more I want to thank you for all your help in decorating "the barn" for the Rehearsal Dinner. It was so beautiful and Matt and Ellie were so happy with it! Even the rain on the rooftop added to the atmosphere. You are such a talented, sweet, genuine person and it was my pleasure meeting you! You are the best at putting people at ease. The "Wedding and Reception" were like a fairytale, more beautiful than words can describe. The lightning made it look magical! I highly recommend Chapel Hill Carriage House. My family thought it was one of the most beautiful weddings they had ever been to and we have had many beautiful weddings at our family home on the Pamilico River! Best regards, Fran

If you need/want a comfortable stay at a hotel, this is not it. This is not it…read more I'm writing this review at 5 AM after having had very little sleep last night due to the super uncomfortable mattress. I honestly feel like sleeping on the floor would have been as comfortable as this mattress in this room. And for what I paid for this room I expected much more, much better. Checking in downstairs I was greeted by a beautiful spacious lobby, a fresh scent in the air, and the check in reception desk staff was friendly and super competent. I chose to park on site because it was freezing outside and I didn't want to have to walk too far as I'm traveling by myself. Parking below the hotel is available for a cost. Getting down under the building in a larger vehicle can be a little scary. But I managed to easily find parking and hopefully later today when I leave, I won't have any issues. I took the elevator from the parking lot up to the fourth floor where my room is and easily found my room. But when I open the door to my room, it smelled like dirty sheets. Like dirty hair that needs to be washed. It did not smell like the fresh scent of the lobby. The decor is very masculine and uncomfortable. The couch that I sat in started to unfold itself as I'm sitting in it is the best way I can describe it. It's like it can turn into another bed in the room, but it's so poorly made that while you're sitting on it the bottom cushions start to slide out like it's going to turn it into the bed. Very uncomfortable and hard. The actual king size bed looks like it's going to be super comfortable. It's got nice, fluffy sheets and pillows on it however, I cannot get comfortable in it as it is hard as a rock. My hips are killing me and my right arm keeps falling asleep. I cannot find a comfortable position. There is no alarm clock, so I have to check my phone to check the time. Good luck figuring out the light switches. I spilled some water and there are no paper towels, so I chose to use a washcloth to wipe it up. Thefloors are laminate so wiping it up should've been easy and I expected the washcloth to be virtually clean when I picked it up, however it was filthy. So when was the last time these floors were mopped? And then I started looking around that's an area rug and there are several dark stains on the area rug. I had to turn the heater on because the air conditioner was running and the room was freezing. I mean outside it was 33°. The heater was so loud. I called downstairs and they offered to send someone up, but I was already in my pajamas so hopefully after I check out, they will check it out because it sounded like a freight train was in the room every time it came on. The walls are pretty thin and I know this is a college town and there was a concert here tonight. I knew that I would hear sounds from the street, but it was the sounds from the hallway and the rooms around me that was super annoying. The iron never heated up enough and water spilled all over the clothes I was ironing. Had to use the hair dryer to remove the water. Some previous yelpers said the water pressure in the shower was light. I found it to be perfect. But the hotel provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash all had a male-centered fragrance. Overall, I'm very disappointed in the stay. I have a pretty long day ahead of me with a lot of driving and I got basically no rest. And my back is stiff.
