Great spot. Loved it. I had a Whiskey paloma and it was solid. Next I had a paper airplane. It's a really good vibe and all of the drinks were crafted very much at a higher level. I was at the owners were there so have some time I have a conversation with them and they were super nice and friendly. Let us walk around the entire shop and answer all questions and total some history. It's a college vibe but not an undergrad vibe if that makes any sense. You may see some grass students or whatever the case may be, but you wouldn't find a bunch of 19-year-olds piled up in this kind of spot. It used to be small apparently but they expanded it out to a back room and an attic kind of situation. It seems like a attic kickback kind of spot. Really homish or something you will find in a living room. It made it on the top list of speakeasies on Yelp so I had to check it out while I was in the area. I would 100% recommend. read more

Five stars and then some Lucky happenstance for me That I found this place I bookmarked a ton of different places in the Research Triangle prior to coming down. This place was not on my agenda or even my radar. Took a rest but not a nap at my hotel for most of the evening. 11 o'clock rolled around and decided it was time to continue the March. Had a couple at a place next to the hotel which closed at midnight. Went strolling down the main Chapel Hill/Carrboro drive to see what else I could find. Saw some food trucks and a building next to it that was lighted up. Turned out it was a dispensary. Told them not my drug of choice. Guy at the counter pointed me to the direction of here. It is on the backside of the Carolina Car Wash. Dark when I got there but I didn't notice any signage. Saw some smokers congregating and figured this must be the place. It lives up to the speakeasy vibe. Dark and lowdown. Careful on your way in. The door I entered had quite the drop on the first step to ground level. The cocktails were priced about what you would expect. All were really good! My favorite was probably their take on a White Russian. The bartender, Dan, was from my hometown of Saint Paul. We even grew up on the same street but miles apart. Also ended up chatting with some friendly "locals" from Wisconsin and Nebraska. I put "locals" in quotes because if you visit here you will find out that almost nobody is from the area. One of the two biggest transplant centers in the nation. If you find yourself in the area, give it a whirl. I found great drinks and conversation on my maiden visit. read more

This place totally embodies what a speakeasy is meant to be- unassuming exterior, dark sultry interior, fantastic cocktails. When we first pulled up to this spot, my brother pointed to the unassuming metal door. My initial response was, "you want me to touch that?" But boy I'm glad I did. As soon as I opened the door, the cool den décor welcomed us in. It's not a big place and that makes the draw even stronger- we are one of the few who have discovered this gem. I ordered a cocktail- the Butterfly Pea Sour and it was great. My brother and boyfriend also loved their cocktails. This was a cool find and would love to come back to try some of their other cocktails. read more

This place has a lot going for it, so let's start with the good: spacious and well designed bar, thoughtful / innovative cocktail menu, and a very cool clientele. Chatting with other customers here was 100% the high point. Here's the bad: the cocktails were barely mediocre, despite being expensive and highly touted. I had two, and while their descriptions were interesting, both turned out unbalanced and with lemon pulp in one and ice shards in the other. This wouldn't bother me at some random bar, but it's unfortunate when it comes from a bartender talking up the cocktail accolades this place has earned. Belltree is a great cocktail bar. Zach and Kyle are amazing at what they do. One of the best cocktail bars in town.

Hands down, the best speakeasy. When you open the door, you see a shelf of books as you turn you see a very large open room. The mood is very ambient and they have an amazing bar. Place is small. Couple tables, lounger sofa and bar seats. Drinks: Very gourmet. You can ask the bartenders for recommendation. Lono and Quinn is just so welcoming and knowledgeable. I've tried so many I don't recall the names but I can tell you that you must experience their house cocktails. It does get busy on the weekend nights so if you want to experience drinks with bartenders full attention I recommend to go there early. read more

Fave spot in Carborro/Chapel Hill! The atmosphere and the guys who work there are great, and so chill, Zack and Dan especially! Everytime I have gone there they have been so incredibly kind and if I am not in the mood for one of their awesome cocktails on the menu, they have whipped up cocktails for me on the spot that I have loved. Nice, unpretentious speakeasy that can be a little tricky to find. It had a nice set up, chill with some couches spread around. The menu was a mixture of bartender creations, along with beer, and wine. I had the Mezcal drink..forgot the name..but, it was really good. The smoke of the mezcal worked very well with the citrus and brown sugar combination. Solid place, would return. read more

What a cool little bar nestled in Carrboro! A friend suggested meeting up here on a weeknight, and it was the perfect place to perch for a couple hours and hang out. Cocktails range from $9-13, but I saw on the blackboard that some beers are as little as $3. So if you want the cool, speakeasy spot without breaking the bank, you could always grab a brewsky. If you can score a seat on the couch, I think that's your best bet. Otherwise, there are a few tables and seats at the bar. I don't want to be the first one to leave a 4-star review, so I won't! My only gripes are the high prices and how long it takes to receive your expensive drink... but you know what, the cocktails are delicious are made with love, so I'm not going to knock any points off. I have lived in Carrboro for three years and didn't even know this place existed until a friend mentioned it. This adds to the appeal- patroning Belltree means you're a local in the know. The bar has a great dark, romantic vibe. I visited around Christmas and the lit tree added a cozy touch. There was barely anyone in there and it mostly stayed that way, which is nice in a speakeasy like this. The menu is full of thoughtful (albeit pricey) cocktails and liquors. I arrived with a group of 5 people and it did take a while for all of us to finally have our drinks, as the bartender zested multiple fruits and lit things on fire and sprinkled endless spices. But the outcome resulted in several very unique, tasty drinks. We cozied up on some leather couches and the bartender eventually brought us some fresh-made popcorn. We will definitely come back the next time we're looking for a cozy, upscale spot to have a cocktail. This is the place to go when you're sick of the Crunkleton. read more

"I LOVE THIS PLACE! THIS IS MY FAVORITE FU$%#NG BAR!" - drunk guy at Belltree on July 1, 2017 I am inclined to agree with Mr. Drunk Guy. This is one of my favorite bars in the Triangle. I love that it has a nondescript speak-easy door, cool turn-of-the-century study decoration, intimate lighting/size. The vibe is more mature and sophisticated than the beer-soaked college bars that are everywhere at the dog-leg where Chapel Hill turns into Carrboro. And so are the cocktails. They have a great home drink-menu, with a nice balance of cocktails, wines, and beers. But it's their cocktails that really shine. The bartenders here are young, but clearly have been trained to actually be bartenders - which means measured pours, practiced hand, and each drink being tasted for perfection. This is a great place for adults to go have a smart cocktail before a show at the Cat's Cradle or after dining at the far end of Franklin street. Nice job, fellas. Keep up the good work. Pro-tip: The bar's ice-well heat exhaust vents about one-third the way down the bar under the bar. This is a great seat during winter, but probably should be avoided during summer. read more

I love the cool speakeasy vibe of this place, but it does make it a bit difficult to find. I was tipped off by a group of men smoking outside, plus there was a window with the blinds open. Speakeasies don't have windows you can see into! Anyway, I thought the cocktails were delicious. I believe my first was called a vivacious violet. I asked the bartender for recommendations for my second drink and agreed to try one with balsamic in it (unfortunately I don't remember the name). I was skeptical but I'm glad I tried it! I still don't quite understand how those ingredients all worked together but I would recommend it. Sometimes speakeasy bars can be a bit pretentious but I didn't feel that way about Belltree at all. The bartenders were friendly and helpful, and there was a good crowd of people hanging out. It seems like a place you could come by yourself to sit at the bar and get a drink (at least on a Thursday night) and it wouldn't be weird. I'll be back for the drinks and atmosphere (but probably not too often for my wallet's sake). read more

Small and tucked a little to the side of the college bar scene, Belltree offers *exceptional* artisan cocktails in a nicely designed, speakeasy type of environment. If you want a perfectly made, high quality Old Fashioned or Cosmo, this is absolutely the place. The scene is pretty laid back, not somewhere you'd go dancing or for a large night out, but absolutely perfect for a date or just drinks with friends. read more

I stumbled onto this place after dropping my soon-to-be-ex-wife off for a date at another, much stupider bar where she was meeting an admittedly beautiful and super cool redhead. I walked in to find the Righteous Brothers playing in the air of a dimly lit space filled with the kind of rich, wine-colored leather furniture that's creased with buttons and makes you feel as though you've stumbled into a random and amazing English bar hidden in the alleys of Morocco circa 1972. And then I saw the menu, filled with amazing cocktails. What to get?! Oh, wait. There's a sign with a special ... a Peach Blackberry New Old Fashioned. FOR SIX BUCKS WAT. I ask the bartender about it, and he tells me how he picked the peaches just this morning. I'm sold. It's delicious. I'm writing this review from the couch, a supple burgundy couch of wondrous understanding, sipping this drink and wondering where my life went so wrong. I have no answers. But the customer service is so off-putting -- especially for the prices -- that it's a hard pass for me. Great drinks! A little on the pricey side, but that's alcohol for you! I had their "I'm Dreaming of a White Russian" and LOVED it. The hand-whipped Baileys really puts them over the edge. Additionally, they were really accommodating of our large party (12? people) and moved tables together for us as we came in. This is a new speakeasy celebrating their grand opening tonight in the former location of peccadillo. I came here the night peccadillo closed and was excited to attend the grand opening of a new bar in the same location. Similar to crunkleton, it's a membership only place; they were selling membership cards at the door for $5. They have a slender cocktail menu of classics. I had an old fashioned. It was a wee busy so I didn't ask for anything off menu but I am sure they would be willing to concoct something if asked. All the bartenders were dressed in dapper fashion with suspenders and ties. The vibe inside is pretty similar to the old peccadillo. It's a dark bar. That didn't change and that is a-ok. My old fashioned was well mixed. My only gripe is the atomic red maraschino cherry in my $12 cocktail. It's not a big complaint, but there are way better cocktail cherries out there for fancy cocktails. Just my two cents. All in all, I'm happy to see another cool hang out spot in my town and hope it keeps drawing the crowd! Good luck!! read more
