If you want good Mediterranean food this is the place to go! If you want quiet, this isn't the place. I loved it though. Kind of reminded me of a busy city market. Absolutely fantastic in my opinion. It was a bit overwhelming at first trying to decide on what to eat. We decided for the classic Gyro and had some avocado/guacamole type side....I forget the name. They were fantastic. Very hard to eat only because they load the pita bread with a ton of food. We got forks and knives and just cut it up. The place was clean and the folks bringing food out were moving. Bathrooms were even clean. What I didn't take a pic of was the baklava I decided to get. Pistachio Baklava....do yourself a favor and just get it. You'll thank me later. Had the Armenian roasted veggies, OK, but I'll stick with the regular roasted vegetables from now on. Had the Moroccan couscous has chickpeas in it and that's good. They have several good deals, including an entrée with two sides for $18. The sizes are generous and I was actually able to make several meals out of this entrée +2 side combo. My favorite dish of the things I tried was the mujadara. I also loved the cold bar with pickled beets, different sauces, and other accoutrements for my food. Mediterranean Deli makes a triumphant return to Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Two years without the grilled chicken panini wrap was too long. My meal tasted like familiar perfection. I've been coming here since my UNC days starting in 2008 and even though I'm now much farther away, I still make the drive. That says everything. This place has been a community staple for years, and I was so relieved when they reopened after the fire. The Mediterranean menu is unlike anything I've seen -- the selection is massive and everything is fresh and authentic. They also serve Turkish-style pizzas, bake their own bread daily, have a small grocery, and offer desserts. Don't skip the chocolate baklava -- perfectly baked, not too sweet, and generous with the pistachios. The owner is kind, engaged, and genuinely part of the Chapel Hill community. You One practical note: downtown Chapel Hill parking is no joke -- towing and ticketing are aggressive, so give yourself extra time to find a spot. Totally worth the effort though. I rushed out of RDU after landing solely because I was so excited to try Med Deli based on all the reviews. The experience did not disappoint! The menu is huge, which made ordering really tough. I stuck with a classic and ordered a chicken gyro pita with a side of tabouli. My food was ready in about 10-15 minutes. For ~$12, I got enough food to feed a family of three-four...the portion was absolutely massive! The chicken was cooked perfectly on top of a fluffy pita, and the tzatziki tied everything together. My only complaint was that it was really difficult to eat since there was too much on top of the pita to pick it up and eat it. I loved that there was a bar with olives, pickles, sauces, etc. to complement my meal. The large windows that open up to outside are great. This was my first visit to Mediterranean Deli. A friend of mine suggested that we visited this place for lunch. I'm glad that I went along with her recommendation. The customer service was great and the staff was helpful when we had questions. I ordered the Chicken Gyro and it was flavorful and filling. The gyro was filled with chicken, red onions, a lettuce mix and tomatoes with tzatziki sauce on top. There was no way I could have folded the pita with all of the ingredients in this meal. The ambiance of the deli was comfortable and airy. I enjoyed the fact that the deli opened up their large front windows/doors to allow fresh air to flow through the business. I entered through the grocery store side, where I bought cilantro, a yogurt drink we always drink overseas that I found here, and some other spices and snacks we normally have to go to specific stores for. Literally the most colorful and delicious looking food spread I ever saw. I haven't seen a place like this since I visited New York. They have everything. Literally everything. There's not a person that can come here and said they don't want anything. After their bakery window which includes various cookies, cakes, and pastries, you have two long windows of delicious food. They offer so many things to choose from like different pastas (tomato sauce, pesto, tortellini, etc.), rices (Tunisian rice, couscous, basmati rice, etc.) like 10 different kinds of salad including tuna and salmon, pastries with seafood, cheese, chicken, or spinach, so many kinds of hummus, potato salads, roasted vegetables, grape leaves, steak filled cabbage rolls, and more. All of it looked fresh and was presented beautifully too. At the very end you have different meat options like lamb shanks, jerk chicken, beef tagine (so good), and more. It's hard not to try everything. Especially with their big portions and great prices. I spent way less than I thought I was going to and you can also get everything in 1/4 cup side, 1/2 cup, or 1 whole cup. I got -Lamb shank that came with 2 sides: I chose Tunisian rice and roasted eggplant stew. -Doner kebab wrap and that came with 2 sides: I chose cheese tortellini and grape leaves. -Lamb gyro -Side of sardines -Side of beef tagine (AMAZING) -Side or couscous Everything I got tasted GREAT. We dined in on a Saturday, so happy that the place had reopened several weeks ago. But, sadly: my falafel wrap was pretty much inedible. The falafel itself was just broken, pasty pieces- not patties or balls, just crumbles. You're required to choose two toppings (there's no way to opt out), and if you want only one of the choices offered, you will get double-- which means I had a huge, ice cold, double scoop of baba ghanoush-- which, weirdly, had big chunks of stale pita bread swimming in it (and may even have contained mayonnaise? Idk, but it was awful) on top of the crumbles. Atop that: a ton of unappetizing wet lettuce and mushy sliced tomatoes, also ice cold. The pita itself was fine, but whole package was truly revolting- just an overflowing,, slimy mess. My partner's chicken shawarma wrap wasn't quite as terrible, but was super dry and by no means tasty. Maybe this restaurant is still working out some bugs from the re-open, but we are done. Atmosphere: Mediterranean Deli is a spacious restaurant on Franklin Street. There is a large deli counter spanning a quarter of the restaurant, and the rest is the dining area to enjoy your food. Service: It is a mix of self-serve and deli-bar ordering. After looking around for a bit and finally ordering with one of the workers, our meal came out relatively quickly. Food: We ordered the Athen's Style Chicken (chicken breast cooked in cream sauce) with the Chickpea Salad and Lebanese Potato Salad, as well as the Moroccan Beef Tagine with Grilled Eggplant and Pomegranate Muhammara. All of the food was absolutely delicious and flavorful! Our favorites have to be the main entrees, the Athen's Style Chicken and Moroccan Beef Tagine. They were both so tender and addicting! I have never had a dish like this before. Fatayer is a Middle Eastern version of a pizza/calzone. The soujouk fatayer came with aged spice Turkish sausage with eggs, feta, and mozzarella cheese wrapped in dough. This was no joke. It was HUGE and super cheesy. The sausage had so much flavor, it was so strong paired with the feta cheese but the mozzarella and eggs mellowed it out. The dough was perfectly baked. It almost reminded me of a soft pretzel consistency because it had a crust but it wasn't TOO crusty and the inside was so soft. I was picking off pieces and dipping them in their homemade tzatziki. I arrived pretty much as soon as they opened so not many people yet. I got the 3 item sampler with veggie lentil salad, sweet potato purée and kale salad. It comes with organic pita bread and if you dine in you can utilize the toppings bar. Find the "order here" sign and make your selections from a wide variety of tasty looking food. I dined in which was nice as the front garage type doors all roll up to give a real open air feeling. Very nice touch. The food was incredible. Fresh, well seasoned and spiced. The lentils were cooked perfectly and the pita bread was great. I really enjoyed the sauces as well, flavorful and spicy. The ones I got (don't remember the names) had some good heat to them as well. Mediterranean Deli in Chapel Hill is outstanding. This is one of the best restaurants in the Triangle. It's certainly one of my favorite Mediterranean restaurants anywhere. The food is phenomenal and a good value. Chapel Hill is lucky to have this place. "Med Deli" has been a Chapel Hill institution since 1991. Street-park on Franklin or one of the nearby streets. If it's Monday-Saturday, use the ParkMobile app to pay for and monitor your parking meter. Street parking is free on Sunday. The restaurant is spacious. There are three separate counters - deli, bakery, market - and a banquet room in the back. In terms of ambiance, this isn't a nice restaurant, but a bustling, casual joint. It's showing its age. When the weather is nice, they'll roll up the wide, retractable storefront windows to create an al fresco (open air) dining experience. There's plenty of outdoor patio seating as well (uncovered) on the sidewalk. Med Deli offers menus of fresh-pressed juices and espresso too, so they serve as a juice bar and cafe of sorts on top of the deli, bakery, and restaurant operations. Med Deli's menus and display cases chockful of colorful, fresh salads and appetizing, prepared Middle Eastern food can be overwhelming, especially for first-timers. There are well over *100* by-the-pound and individual item selections. This doesn't include specials, the dessert case (20+ selections), baked goods, and the "standard" restaurant menu with things like shawarma, kebabs, and paninis. I recommend everything below. Note the entrees come with sides. I do not recommend, generally, the non-baklava sweets. * Lamb and Beef Gyro Platter ($12.50) - rotisserie lamb and beef gyro meat w/ lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions, tzatziki. Med Deli's gyro is amazing in terms of both quality and quantity. They give you really large, thick, succulent slices. Most gyro I've had have been thinly-shaved in varying degrees of quality and portion size. Med Deli makes it clear their gyro is the best and biggest around, at least in platter form. * Kofta Kebob ($12.50) - ground sirloin w/ parsley, onion, spices. Med Deli's Kofta Kebob is solid. I'm a fan of kofta and this is one item of theirs that I'll say does not blow the competition away. It's still very good, though. * Chicken Tagine ($12.99) - baked bone-in chicken thighs w/ onions, carrots, honey, ginger. The tagine is nicely-seasoned, tender, and full of flavor. The chicken and veggies are served over a bed of yellow rice. Sides: Baba ghanoush Eggplant squash stew Hummus - harissa, cilantro Baked okra Turkish roasted beets Turkish kisir Israeli red cabbage salad Tabouli salad Palestinian orange salad Jerusalem salad Kale salad With so many items in the deli cases, the 4-Item Sampler is a great way to try Med Deli's sides ($10.99). There are 2 and 3-Item Sampler options as well. The portion sizes are the most generous of any Mediterranean restaurant I've visited. Everything has been fresh and flavorful. The baba ghanoush is top-notch in terms of smoky flavor and delectable texture. The eggplant squash stew is packed with flavor and very satisfying. Med Deli offers eight hummus flavors which is a lot. Their hummus has great flavor and perfectly-smooth consistency. The baked okra dish used a unique type of short okra. Kisir is like couscous or quinoa. If you like beets, you can't go wrong with their version. The salads are crisp and refreshing. Their tabouli has been a go-to for me. I also love both the Jerusalem salad and Palestinian orange salad. Med Deli uses a lot of crunchy carrot chunks in their Jerusalem salad, which is different to me (I like it). Their Palestinian orange salad is excellent. It's an uncommon item so I suggest trying it if you haven't. The orange slices are coated in yummy, savory spices, and the salad comes with ripe dates. * Lamb Fatayer ($10.50) The fatayers are eye-popping and delicious. They are meat pies, but remind me more of a pizza. Med Deli offers eight kinds of fatayer. The lamb fatayer is fantastic with tender, savory meat, lots of melted cheese and parsley, and tomatoes, with sesame seed atop a warm, soft bread wrapping. * Baklava - pistachio, date, walnut ($2.99 each) * Burma ($2.50) - shredded whole wheat stuffed with pistachios and honey The baklava here is incredible. Again, large portions. Fresh. I enjoyed the pistachio and date equally. Walnut comes in third place for me, but it's still great. The baklava is made in-house. The other desserts are not. Of the sweets, I really only recommend the baklava. * Turkish Coffee ($3.50) Finely-ground and served in a traditional pot. Med Deli's Turkish coffee is fun to have after a meal with some of their baklava. Don't forget to check out the condiments bar. I had quite the pleasant experience at Mediterranean Deli and Bakery. As soon as I walked in, I was hit with the smells of food I knew would be delicious. I looked at the menu and I checked out the displays of food. I ended up ordering the chicken shawerma (their spelling) with a side of Mediterranean quinoa. I loved it. The dining room is pretty large and has plenty of seating. There is also outside seating available with some strategically placed fans. Always a 5 star experience here at Mediterranean Deli. The food is cooked & prepared fresh every single morning and they make their pita bread in house and is available for purchase to take home also. I love their chicken kebab platter with the rice, Greek salad with feta and the pesto pasta salad. The pasta salad is my favorite! The hummus and tzatziki are fantastic! Everything is great leftover as well; the portions are generous, so be prepared to take some food home, depending on your appetite. All the dishes are consistent every single time. I love their drink selections especially the hibiscus tea (delicious when you mix it with some lemonade). They also offer a lovely citrus & cucumber water that is made fresh every morning. They boast variety of desserts and sweet treats. We always take home a piece each of the Italian cream cake and the limoncello cake; both are absolutely delicious.
