This is the second vegetarian Persian restaurant I've been to. It gave off no overt sign of the difficult times currently facing that part of the world. The menu includes a few options with tempeh but is mostly vegetable based, and is not full of artificial fake meats or weird fusion stuff. Ordering a sprout salad was a good decision. I was worried the nuts would be excessive but it was a reasonable amount, and the dressing and finely shaved vegetables made for a light experience. My vegetable stew came with some aromatic rice, and a satisfying flavor mix. Ordering tea was a good idea as well; almost everything in this cuisine seems to be lime-flavored. The overall portion size for price was not overly favorable. The location is near the hospital system and in an area with dicey parking, it does have its own parking spots outside and in an adjoining garage. read more

4-1/2 stars: Great menu, great food, slow service at lunch. We hadn't been to Sage since its move to Durham, so when an appointment took us to that part of town, we dropped in for lunch. In my memory it's even better in the new location. There's a mix of Turkish and other Mediterranean food on offer, and it was hard to make a choice. I got the falafel/hummus wrap and my companion got a salad. There is a small menu of beer and wine available, and we got a glass of white, and a non-alcoholic beer (Dry January). Both were perfectly fine for lunch. The food was super-fresh and well seasoned. The portions were more than enough for lunch. The only niggle is that the poor woman working as a server was all alone, and one person simply isn't enough to cover the whole place. We weren't in a hurry, but people trying to pack a visit into a short lunch hour might have been cramped. Anyway, we'll be back the next time we're in Durham for lunch. read more

My friends and I got takeout last night, and as soon as I walked into the restaurant, I knew that the food was going to be good based on how delicious it smelled inside! I ordered the samosas and the osh soup which were both indeed delicious. Not only was the food amazing, but the owner was probably one of the nicest people I have ever. Had a wonderful date night with my husband here. Such a cool vibe. Loved the artwork and background music. The servers were so welcoming and quick to get us anything we needed. The food took a little while but it was well worth it! Everything was absolutely delicious. I am not vegetarian but would 100% eat here every week if we lived closer. The vegetarian lasagna was magnificent, and the brunch and gnocchi arabiatta was also delicious. The samosa we had as an appetizer was good, and the dark chocolate walnut cake was yummy too. I was delighted to find a vegetarian restaurant so close to my hotel, but Sage is well worth going out of your way! On my first visit I tried the lasagna. It's hard to find veggie lasagna at all, let alone one so tasty. While it was rich, it was not drowning in cheese or sauce, which gave it a lighter, healthier vibe. It was so good that I returned the next day (which I rarely do while traveling) to try the lunchtime falafel wrap. The falafel itself was perfectly textured and tasty, the wrap nicely toasted, and the dill house dressing on the side salad was sooooo delicious. I also had cold Persian tea, and that was beautifully aromatic. My lunchtime companion, a meat eater, loved his gnocchi and especially thought the sauce was great. We got the osh soup, tropical salad, and budem joon. The food was ok but not as sour/flavorful as authentic Persian food we have had elsewhere (especially the budem joon). The osh soup tasted like Indian hak saag to me. The water they served us had a weird off flavor that tasted like BO. The service was fine. Ambience was a bit dark where we were seated but otherwise good. Had hoped for a bit better quality given the price point but might give it another try at some point. read more

Such delicious and healthy veg meals here! I love the Persian stews and the mixed green salad with creamy dill dressing. To be honest I haven't explored everything they have because I can't pull myself away from the Fessen-joon and Bud-m-joon. Their roots are from Persia but they also have samosas, hummus, falafel wraps, lasagna, gnocchi, and a range of salads. You can't go wrong here. Sage is fantastic. My family and I had an exceptional experience there for a Saturday lunch. The ambiance is great. A warm, modern interior with comfortable seating and relaxed lighting will be appreciated. The subtle fragrance of incense welcomed us without being intrusive. We were immediately greeted by the owner Lakshmi, who is a ray of sunshine. She was warm, attentive, thoughtful, and gracious. There are tons of vegan options, which comprise about half the menu; the other half is vegetarian. I was indecisive about my selection of Fessen Joon, and Lakshmi offered to let me try a sample first. I have never had that at a restaurant before! It was so considerate and thoughtful, and I ended up choosing something else based on that sample. The menu is creative and balanced Indian & Middle Eastern cuisine, showcasing fresh ingredients and exciting flavor combinations. Each dish arrived beautifully plated and tasted as good as it looked - bold, well seasoned, and satisfying without feeling heavy. I started with a cup of coffee with almond milk. It was fresh and hit the spot. I'd be thrilled if they added soymilk as an option for the coffee, but the almond was more than welcome. The samosas were very tasty and not too oily or salty, as they often can be at some restaurants. The Saka was a lot like Indian saag - a warming spinach curry with chunks of potato, and I added a side of grilled tempeh. The tempeh was perfect: nutty, well seasoned, not too dry or moist, and a perfect companion for the Saka. These were served with a side of beautifully fluffy rice. The texture contrast was spot-on. The portions were generous, and the prices were fair for the quality and creativity on the plate. After finishing half my meal, I was very full and I got the rest to go. I didn't have room for dessert, but maybe next time I'll try their vegan banana chocolate cake. 5/5 - this place is a memorable treat! I'd recommend it to anyone. The only small constructive feedback I can give: the takeout containers are made of a biodegradable cardboard, which is good for the environment, but were flimsy and got soggy pretty fast. If I had to travel more than 20 minutes, they would have been soaked through and fallen apart. The food also started to pour out a bit because they do not seal shut well. I hope the management can possibly look into some better options for that; not regular plastic, but perhaps something like those ones made of corn (but look and feel like plastic)? Visitors might consider bringing a couple of reusable containers from home just in case you have leftovers. But honestly, this is such a minor quibble for a fantastic restaurant which I look forward to visiting again soon! read more

Even my dad, who is very particular, said he never had a falafel wrap that tasted that good. What a wonderful addition to Durham! Until you visit Sage, you cannot imagine how good vegetarian food can be. I recently visited with 3 friends and we all loved the food. Each of us ordered a different dish and we were all delighted. Two of us indulged in dessert and they were equally delicious.
