Best falafel!! Ive been here four times and one time was just to buy like 15 pieces of falafel. All of their sides are vegetarian but are on the oily side. Other than the orzo salad and dips, I don't think i'd keep coming back for the rest of the sides. But you can't ever go wrong with the falafel. "Bodega-like Mediterranean Grill & Grocery in Parkwood area of Durham" This place is WAY off the beaten path for most, but I'm so happy to have gotten to try it out. Nestled in a little strip between a Muslim school and a mosque is this grill and grocery. We came on a Wednesday evening, and almost every table was already taken by diners. You order your food at a counter, and it has the Middle Eastern foods you'd expect-- kofta, shawarma, gyros, falafel, baba ghanouj, hummus, baklava, etc. I opted for the lamb gyro sandwich with a side of baba ghanouj, and my dining partner had the falafel sandwich. They call your number when it's ready. Food took maybe 10 minutes to receive, so we browsed the market area. It's not a huge selection, but very traditional-- nice seeing so many labels in Arabic, and along with standards (e.g., canned fava beans for Ful Medames), they also had things like frozen chopped mulukhiyah leaves-- that's definitely a rarer sight. Lots of good spices too. The food was EXCELLENT. The lamb was juicy and perfect (unlike what another Yelp review said), the tzatziki sauce was delicious, and the baba ghanouj was perfectly cooked and textured. I had a small bite of the falafel, and it was indeed one of the best I've had in the US. Price was fair, too-- the sandwiches are all under $10 before tax and tip, and making it a combo with side and drink cost just something like $2.50. And service was friendly-- although they called out numbers, they did walk out with the food to try to find and bring you your dishes. And while it was an older space, it was overall still generally clean. Overall, I'd VERY happily come back. read more

Whatever the rice tasted great and it wasn't dry like at a lot of places. The chicken was marinated in a tangy yogurt-spice mix, grilled and topped with a tahini sauce. Delicious! This is a really reasonably priced, authentic, cute little restaurant with a grocery store in the back. They always change out their sides-I got an eggplant salad today and it was a bit on the smaller side, but I really enjoyed. The entree itself was a great size and I got a free drink too. Although they are located in an old building near a baseball field, this place is a true landmind for delicious food in South Durham. Mediterranean Grill & Grocery is by far my absolute favorite place to go for a gyro sandwich in the triangle. It's flavorful, juicy, assembled beautifully, and they don't skimp on the meat. They also have the best baba ghanoush, curried chick peas, roasted veggies and tabouli. I also love their curried couscous soup. Everything I"ve tried has always tasted super fresh. Their pita bread is always soft too even though it's not made in house and comes out of a bag they sell in the store. Overall, I can surely attest and say that I've never had anything here that I didn't like, and their quality and quantities are consistent. If you're in a hurry and coming here during dinner time I highly recommend placing a to go order over the phone and checking in what side salads they have. Hummus, baba ghanoush, and the tzaziki yogurt sauce seem to be constant, but if you're craving curried chickpeas like I do, just know that it's not an everyday day thing and you may want to call ahead. read more

Let me just say some of the best falafel I've had in the triangle. Perfectly crisp and very well seasoned. The hummus was the perfect consistency and paired well with the pita and falafel. My friend also got the fries and the seasoning on them were great! When I was driving to the restaurant I was very confused at first since it's in the middle of a couple neighborhoods. However do not let the looks confuse you since the food is great. Plenty of parking and seating when I went on Friday night. Prices were reasonable and the staff was friendly. Food took slightly longer but it seems like they make everything fresh so makes sense. Overall, probably one of my favorite if not my favorite Mediterranean restaurants in the area and will definitely be back. A must try! read more

I found this restaurant on Yelp when I was in the area. When I first pulled up and saw the exterior of the restaurant I was going to leave because it looks dark and unwelcoming. I later decided to go inside & check it out since they had good reviews. When I walked in, I observed several tables in the center of the space with groceries and a cooler on the exterior of the business in the rear. The prep area was behind the front counter. They also had some food items on display in front. The menu was posted behind the front counter & I placed my order. There were multiple people waiting for their food when I arrived so it took some time for me to get my food since there were only two people behind the front counter. I was provided with a cup for my combo when I placed my order but the drink fountain was located to the right of the front counter so I didn't think that I was supposed to walk back there. When I asked the clerk he told me I can go back there to obtain my beverage. There were variety of beverages to choose from. After a while an employee asked me what I ordered. After I told him he brought me my chicken shawarma and then said that he would bring my fries out when they were done. The shawarma looked appetizing. It had a garlic sauce & was topped with French fries, lettuce, tomatoes and tahini. I chose not to get the pickles and onions. It was decent but tasted a little different than what I have had in the past. I'm pretty sure that it was the sauce that I wasn't fond of. Once I got my fries, they were hot but I've had better. Truly a hidden gem! Tucked away in a side street and attached to their grocery store, Mediterranean Grill & Grocery served up some of the best gyros and shawarma I've had in the area. I got to try the lamb/beef gyro and the chicken shawarma pita sandwiches, both bursting with flavor. The pita is soft and fluffy, and the meats are flavorful and grilled to perfection. I also highly recommend the fries on the side - they're super crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, just like a perfect fry should be. The lamb/beef gyro comes with a tzatziki sauce while the chicken shawarma comes with a garlic sauce. Both were delicious. I asked for the tzatziki on the side but ended up pouring it all on my gyro anyway lol. Also the pita sandwiches are huge, definitely super filling for a meal. So glad I discovered Mediterranean Grill & Grocery! Definitely a must-go if you're looking for some delicious, authentic Mediterranean food.
