I usually dine out before the performances at DPAC and decided to try somewhere new. I just don't like Mellow Mushroom pizza very well. I had planned to order a salad, but then saw pizza yesterday and decided to go with that. I should have gotten the salad. I ordered the Great White. The price and size were good. I just didn't like it. It might be the crust I'm not a fan of but pizza is one of those things we all like different styles of. I don't see myself returning here as I prefer other restaurants. Before an event at DPAC, my adult children and I decided on Mellow Mushroom for dinner. Birthday girl's choice. We split a med and a small (veggie and Holy Shiitake, respectively), and some beverages. We sat on the patio, which was just as loud as inside the regular restaurant. We could hardly hear ourselves catching up on what new adventures we had going on in our lives. Every surface is hard, and most are parallel, so there's absolutely no noise dampening, even with all the bodies seated around. It was a Saturday night, so the place was packed, but the servers and food runners did an admirable job of keeping folks fed and hydrated. The Holy Shiitake was for me, and the others split the veggie. (It's the hobbit in me - I love mushrooms!) It's shiitake mushrooms, a ton of garlic, white sauce (Ranch?), and shaved cheese. I needed a bit more salt, but it's a perfect storm of umami to me! No one complained or said anything at all about the garden pizza. It was onions, green peppers and tomatoes. MM's crust is pretty great. I had a Henderson's gin drop no that was, for all intents and purposes a riff on a White Linen. This is one of my favorite summer slammers, and the elderflower, gin, citrus and cucumber were perfectly balanced. I prefer my cakes a bit muddled, but otherwise, it was great. I used to meet here with a group of friends to share tech chats, but we had to stop due to the noise and no one being able to hear two seats away. That was over a decade ago, and I'm surprised they have done nothing to rectify the situation. A few soft wall coverings and some angled baffling would make a world of difference! My colleagues and I visited this restaurant today for a team luncheon. We had reservations, so we were seated quickly upon arrival. There was a good bit of people in the restaurant as it was lunch time. This restaurant has adequate spacing between the tables, so it is not a cramped atmosphere. The server was personable and came by our table to get our drink orders immediately after we sat down. The server gave us sufficient time to look through the menu to decide what we wanted for lunch. There was one colleague that was running late and didn't show up until after we had already ordered. It took a little while to get the attention of a server to put the last order in. Additionally, the server never did bring an extra set of utensils to our table after our last colleague arrived. I ordered a chicken hoagie and others ordered steak hoagies and pizzas. We all enjoyed our entrées. The combination of the mushrooms and onions in my chicken hoagie made it quite tasty and flavorful, and the toasted bread remained firm. Never been disappointed by a mellow mushroom until tonight. Ordered takeout at 6:05, went for pick up at 6:35 when the pick up time was 6:33 and was told it would be another 10-15 for the wings. 15 minutes later we get a call from the manager (keep in mind we are inside the restaurant) to let us know that they are out of wings. Meanwhile, there had been two plates of wings given out right in front of us to people eating in the restaurant. Manager couldn't even come talk to us face to face, they simply refunded us over the phone and offered no substitution for the lack of appetizer. We're sure the meat was improperly stored bc veggie pizzas we've had were fine (they're the only ones I've eaten, so I was safe), but I'm also not confident in the sanitary conditions of those. There is also a lesser issue with understaffing on the patio, with only one person usually having to man the bar and wait on everyone during weekdays we've been there. Mellow Mushroom's Durham location gets a solid four stars out of me. This pizza chain, founded and based in Atlanta, was started by two Georgia Tech alum in 1974 (Go Jackets!). This Durham location opened in 2005. It was the second Mellow Mushroom to open in the Triangle after the Raleigh location (2002). At the time of writing this review, there are now five locations in the Triangle -- two in Raleigh, one in Cary, and one in Wake Forest. Each location is locally owned and operated. This location, along with the locations I've been to in metro Atlanta, all have colorful, psychedelic themes and decor. Mellow Mushroom Durham is located on the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham, right next to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The American Tobacco Campus is an old tobacco factory that was repurposed into a mixed-use development with restaurants, retail, offices, and apartments. Park in the South Deck at 705 Willard Street. Parking is free except for Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and when there are Bulls games or special events. Also, parking is generally free for the first two hours. She also said booking the reservation over the phone was easy and there were no issues. My wife tried apps and salads that I haven't at this location: Bruschetta ($7.99 each), Pretzel Bites ($8.99 each), Spinach Dip ($10.25 each), and House and Caesar Salads ($9.99 each). You come to Mellow Mushroom for one reason: locale. I think anyone local can tell you there are just better places to visit around Durham for food - especially if you're looking for pizza. But Mellow Mushroom is on the American Tobacco Campus and makes for a lovely walk before or after your meal. The place itself is also trendy and makes for a "good impression" when showing someone around, and so despite Mellow Mushroom being a big chain, out of towners can get a close up glimpse of the Bulls' stadium and the iconic Lucky Strike monuments on their way in. The food is good enough for a Mellow Mushroom! You get to see your meals being prepared via their open kitchen, think dough tossing and such. The redeeming quality about this place is, drumroll, the dough. It's tasty, and though tough, you can tell it has been kneaded into "fresh" meals.
