The first time we came we got a mini pumpkin buttermilk pie and wish I took a picture because it was the most delicious pie I've tried. It had a base layer of pumpkin with a buttermilk layer on top and they complemented eachother perfectly. I keep trying to find a recipe like this to treat at home but can't find anything like it--so unique! We went back and got a tres leches that had a layer of passion fruit and topped with meringue... woahhhh... incredible!! And also unique!! We used to love Roses. But we have now banned it from our rotation. Food is still great but incredibly slow service - both dine in and take out - multiple times we've waited 20+ min beyond the estimated ready time for take out and 30 min after ordering for our food. I understand everyone is understaffed but just adjust your expected ready time online to set expectations. We've also had several unfriendly servers who make you feel like you're imposing on them / it's your fault when they bring out wrong food. This is my new favorite spot in Durham! Rose's Noodles, Dumplings & Sweets is hands-down one of my favorite places to eat in the area. The food is creative, comforting, and full of bold flavors -- you can really taste the care that goes into every dish. The dumplings are delicate and perfectly seasoned, the handmade noodles have great texture, and the desserts are absolutely incredible (don't skip them!). I came here for the first time and ordered a steamed meat bun, the winter sweet potato salad, the House Iced Jasmine Tea and for dessert I got the citrus upside down cake. The food and dessert were fantastic, but the jasmine tea was not my favorite, but that does not mean it was bad. It was just not my favorite flavor. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere feels warm and inviting, and everything is clearly made with love. Whether you're out for a casual dinner or a special night with friends, you can't go wrong with Rose's. By the way, the restroom is beautiful and clean. The only small issue is parking. The tiny lot is kind of a barrier, but there is great parking across the street. There are loads of 2-tops which can be pulled together to accommodate larger groups, as well as a half-dozen outdoor tables. My friends pulled together two tables and the seven of us had enough room. We tried a lot of different dishes, from let noodle bowls to roasted chicken spring rolls. I had the PHAT SI EW SANDO, which is a pita pocket stuffed with rice noodles, pork shoulder, and a fried egg, along with some sort of wilted leafy vegetable and some crispy toppings. Very tasty, and a large portion. I took half home for a lunch. Service was quick and patient (thanks Kaitlyn!), and payment was quick and easy tableside without having to print out tabs. There were a good number of beers available, and some wines as well. Only one red was available by the glass, (a very tiny pour!), but the rest of the meals were far larger portions than we expected. The flavors were great for each one. The outside cracker part (sandwiching the ice cream) gave it a nice crunch, but I prefer soft cookies or brownies on the outside (personal choice). I've had the ice cream sandwiches before which have great flavor combinations and the right type of cookie to support the ice cream. The other desserts might be even better! They have a mouth watering display of various sweets from macarons to cakes to tarts. I settled on a pumpkin pie, chocolate ganache galette, and spiced apple cake. Came here for a late lunch/early dinner on a Saturday afternoon and I think I found my new favorite restaurant. It's slightly smaller inside, so I wouldn't recommend for a large party but, the staff makes you feel so welcomed. Our waiter provided amazing recommendations! We ordered a bao bun to split, House Made Belt Noodles with meat and added veggies, and a Burnt honey honeycomb ice cream sandwich for dessert. The belt noodles were delicious however i would ask for less chili oil next time. When I went to eat my leftovers, my mouth was on fire from the noodles soaking up the extra oil. We enjoyed the raspberry Bundt cake for dessert. All their treats looked amazing. The food was good too. We got the kids a bao to share, they didn't care for the mushrooms inside. I had the fried squid sandwich which was super interesting. Big flavor profile between spicy and citrus mayo and the fried squid. The squid was a bit over cooked and rubbery. A little difficult to eat on sandwich forms. Lastly, we ordered the soy tonkatsu ramen. We were not happy with the flavor, there was something off about the broth. The restaurant is very small, reservation is recommended. The food does come out quick, so we didn't have to wait too long for a table. Service was fine. The restaurant is small so I would suggest making a reservation. We did not but they had a table for three open when we arrived. Our waitress was super helpful. She explained how you park in the parking lot across from the restaurant for two hours free and she validates your parking. It's a little confusing but Caitlin walked us thru the process. We had cold brews and they were delicious. I had the sweet potato noodle dish. She said it was spicy but this was s p I c y . Also the noodles seemed like glass noodles, I was expecting something that resembled or tasted like sweet potatoes, this did not. Many of my Durham friends recommended Rose's to me, so I came into the shop with high expectations. My friend and I called ahead of time to ensure there was seating, and true to their word, Rose's did immediately seat us. After getting water and menus, however, the service was not up to par. We ended up going to the front kiosk to order, where they apologized for the oversight. I think that the establishment is honestly just extremely understaffed since we had to ask for a water jug refill after about 20 minutes of having our food. We also went up front to pay, so I didn't feel like we were being waited on at all. We ordered the 2 salads for $11 lunch special, along with the $17 vegetable hand made belt noodles. I rated the overall meal a 6/10, while my friend rated it 8/10. As someone who often cooks Asian cuisines at home, I felt like I could have made these dishes at home. In my opinion, the chili oil was honestly more oily than spicy, leading to a lack of depth in the dish; my friend simply said that it was a light dressing on the noodles. The salads were good with a variety of textures, but again, I felt like I could make something similar with an online recipe. When we went up front to check out, we were incorrectly charged for the two salads (dinner prices rather than lunch). My transaction had to be voided and recharged. Rose's Soy Tonkotsu Ramen is maybe my preferred ramen in Durham- tender pork belly, broth with sufficient depth, jammy marinated egg. That's the only meal I've had here bc honestly, I usually go to Rose's for a sweet treat. Their Passionfruit Tres Leches lives rent-free in my head lol! Have also tried the Strawberry Pistachio Cheesecake, Apple Cider Mochi Cake, Blood Orange Upside Down Cake, Passionfruit Coconut Macaron, and Crème Brûlée Macaron, all of which were generally great. Free 2-hour parking in the Brightleaf square parking lot across the street (Rose's also has a small parking lot). Ambiance is good, but note that the inside is very small. I recently ate here during a nice cold Sunday. During December/January I love nothing more than to go eat at the bar on a nice cold day and just disappear into a crowd. I went around 1:30PM on a Sunday and usually with a small party there's no wait or a pretty short one. I was quickly sat at the bar, gave my order and was honestly shocked by how quick the service was. I ordered the spicy pork bun and the Soy-Tonkotsu Ramen. The pork buns are aways amazing and they do bring the heat. The ramen was maybe some of the best I've ever had at Roses. The real standout was the mushrooms, and I'm not a mushroom fan, but goodness whatever they were doing to prepare those shiitake's that day was incredible. Even when dining solo on a Sunday afternoon, the Roses staff is so attentive that I still felt seen and taken care of while sitting at the bar. I bought some of the truly amazing ice cream sandwiches to take-home to my wife, who is a big ice cream fan and she loved them. We went today at Rose Noddles at the right time just before it started heavily snowing. This was our first time at this restaurant. We will be back? Yes, for sure! I've seen this place many times but I didn't really know much except that the noodles were pretty and that was the case but also, there's a large pastry case inside with a good selection of cakes and delicious sweets. Good to know... Because of the wintry weather they created a special SnowMan menu which was really original by my opinion. It's tight inside. The tables are really close together, which is a good thing because as a Foodie I love to see what the others choose and chat with them. So that's what we did- the table next to us told us they recommended the Rice Porridge Bowl and the Belt Noodles. We can definitely call this kind of cuisine comfort food, especially during this chilly weather. Fun fact, my spouse took a little bit of my rice porridge to mix with the rest of her bowl to counter the spicy broth and the flavors were matchee so well. I did the same, taking broth from her noodle bowl to add to my porridge and it was so good. If you come if for the first try doing the same and tell us what you think. We immensely enjoyer the flavors, especially the fresh touch of the cilantro on top of the savory mushrooms. I would like to know more about the origin of this business because I think it's really original. After lunch, we were too tempted by the pastries and we left with a chocolate galette, a slice of peanut butter caramel chocolate cake, and an apple cidern mochi cake. Currently, it's 10PM and there's 1 left cake for tomorrow...only the apple cider mochi cake is left to try...we will see if it survives the night lol They make their own chili oil in house. 5 stars for sure !!! Yum! This place was really delicious! It wasn't exactly what we were expecting, definitely not like 'authentic' but more like farm fresh food inspired by different cuisines. Everything was super fresh and tasted homemade. We got the pork steam bun, which was really yummy. The belt noodles were the star of the show though! They were soooo thick and delicious. The broth was super flavorful as well. Overall wonderful experience! Service was great too. I'm conflicted. Came here twice, got the katsu sando and belt noodles, and something from the bakery each time. In the katsu sando, the pork cutlet was alright but the milk bread was disappointing - it was tough and the texture was off. The belt noodles were a miss too. The noodles themselves were good but completely drowned out by the chili oil that smothered the entire dish. All the vegetables were on the bottom beneath the noodles too, so they were also doused in chili oil. There was no room for any flavor that was not spicy and it tasted like there wasn't even any salt in there, so the whole thing just turned out bland. Atmosphere is alright. It's rather small inside but I could see it being cozy. Staff are nice, but it did take 20-30 min for food to come out after ordering. Food is way too overpriced considering the quality and also it being Durham. The bakery, on the other hand, is great. They seem to have a rotating selection of baked goods. Updating my 2017 review for 2024. I still love going to Rose's. I love that they exist and they always try new things. However, multiple visits this year have made me rethink a few things due to weird issues: - Ordered belt noodles once and it didn't come with "sweet corn" as listed in the menu. - Ordered "New Potato & Wax Bean" salad once and it didn't come with garbanzo beans. - Ordered "Lunch special" once and never got the included tea. - Ordered "Breakfast Rice Porridge" once and it didn't have a fried egg. - Was charged for 6 desserts once, but only ordered 5 (didn't notice until I got home). I'm okay with substitutions, but random missing ingredients or being charged extra for things just shouldn't be happening. As far as food reviews...I think everything has been pretty good. I always order every salad and they are always solid. One of my main concerns is the "Breakfast Rice Porridge" or congee. The rice porridge is just too plain and doesn't seem to be made with chicken stock or have seasonings. This is not an issue if the toppings are flavorful, but the only delicious toppings are the ground pork and shiitake mushrooms. But once they're gone you have to deal with unseasoned greens, plain cherry tomatoes, no fried egg (in my case), and so little chili oil that it almost feels like it's just for decoration. I honestly would like a little sesame oil or soy sauce or maybe throw some youtiao on top. I'm okay with plain, but it's just too plain for me. The desserts are always awesome. Can't go wrong with that. The salted caramel bread pudding was fantastic. Rose's is located in a weird place and it's always busy, so when a meal isn't perfect it feels like a bummer. read more

It's definitely no secret that this is one of the best places to eat in Durham. Coming here is both a little sad and fun because every time you go you fall in love with a dish but you also know that it will eventually go away because they change their menu pretty often. I've never had anything that wasn't amazing here and their desserts are honestly the best in NC. I will admit that parking and seating are awful so it helps to go early and on a day with nice weather so you can sit outside because it is very cramped inside. read more

BLUF: If you think a dish is overpriced, it is. Stick to dishes priced in the teens. On three separate occasions (this included) we ordered a $25 main. One being some kind of shrimp sandwich, other I can't remember, and this time a "cLayPoT" rice with pork and bitter melon curry. ANYONE who has order a claypot rice dish knows the best part of it, THE FREAKING BROWNED CRISPY LAYER OF RICE AT THE BOTTOM!! Don't bring this steamed white rice to the table and explain to me that it was cooked in a clay pot and then kept warm in the rice cooker. The noodles were the better dishes. I really wanted to enjoy Rose's since I've had it recommended to me several times but I'm struggling to understand the hype about this place. To start off, the service was subpar - I was waiting at the ordering counter for a while without a greeting or acknowledgement even though there were a handful of people behind the counter. We ordered the belt noodles with ground pork for $20 and the portion was shockingly small. The price would've maybe been excusable if there was more than a bite of pork and the noodles weren't hard (and drowning in chili oil). I got an ice cream sandwich which was very yummy! A few of my friends got the ice cream cups and were told that they were ready to eat. However, they were actually so hard that it snapped a spoon in half. I had seen this restaurant on IG and really wanted to try it. I grabbed my husband yesterday (we had just done a lot of yard work and he really wasn't up for an adventure from Cary but agreed). Not in your face but there to attend to your needs. This isn't a fast food noodle joint. Kitchen is small and in full view. They cook to order so again, have some patience for fresh food. FOOD - as for spicy, I am a Thai hot kinda girl and my husband is more of a level 1-3. We ordered the pork bun and the chili crunch was on the side (they make their own) and it was wonderful. Chili crunch is about a 3-4 on spicy level and my husband was perfectly fine with it. I poured it on. Easily shared by 2. We ordered the chicken spring roll and it was very good! Nice flavor and the sauce was wonderful (I added more chili crunch ). They come as 2 and are sizable (probably could share with 4). We also tried the new potato/wax bean salad and it had a lovely flavor profile but a little heavy. That is enough for 2-3 and is quite good and unusual. Not spicy (didn't add chili crunch but mind you, when eating American potato salad I add a lot of Texas Pete - I know I have a problem ) For our meals (we're getting full) we had the Soy-Tonkotsu Ramen and Wok Summer Veggie Belt Noodles. The Ramen (not spicy) was very good and my belt noodle was as well. The belt noodles were spicy and tasted great. I would have liked a few more veggies like zucchini/yellow squash tossed in raw so they would be al dente when you stirred up the steamy sauce from the bottom. Presentation on everything was spot on. They have silverware and chopsticks available on the table which pleased my husband because he prefers to eat with them all the time. This place is really great. I may be guilty of telling someone that whenever I come to Durham I only want to eat at Rose's. You guys have a pretty decent pizza place as well (Toro), but honestly, I could eat every meal at this little hole in the wall. The noodles are excellent. The sauces are on point, and the produce is fresh. It's like all of the excellent things that you want if you fill your bowl with Ramen. The noodles are also freshly made. The flavours are actually quite simple, which is refreshing. Everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel out there with flavour, but usually it's the simple things that make me want to come back. And I do want to come back. I literally just finished lunch and I'm back on the road and I already want to turn around and come back and order something else, not because I'm hungry, just because it tasted so good. I think it should be noted that 1. I'm currently in an all things Japanese phase obsession (have faith, that will change shortly). 2. While I'm no aficionado, I've come to realize Ramen is a general term for a style of noodles in a broth. So it's best not to compare apples to steak (or something like that) as broth and noodle choices vary. On this particular day, we ordered the Katsu sando and Soy Tonkotsu Ramen to go. The Katsu is a pork cutlet dressed with cabbage, with a sweet mayo sauce. We incorrectly assumed a chicken cutlet. Perhaps due to travel or false expectations we thought the meat was slightly, on the tough side. Also, perhaps due to condensation thought the cutlet could have been a tad bit crunchier. I appreciated the shaved cabbage that provided a textural element we found pleasing. This particular version of milk bread resembled a delicious old school sandwich bread. Overall, we thought it was good. As one would assume, the Soy Tonkotsu Ramen had a soy forward aesthetic. The noodles, were good.
