This is a place in Durham that I've been itching to try for a long time... Well, I was finally in the area, and here's the deal. I think this was an Italian bakery...and it had a truly sensational selection of pastry items, some which were quite arty and unique!! They were also somewhat pricey...but I wanted to try so many. I ended up trying this dessert called "The Fun Guy". It looked like a Mushroom, but inside, it was just heavenly bliss! (I included a pic with all the ingredients inside) Truly, it ranks as one of the best desserts I've had in a LONG time. That's saying a lot, given how I go to bakeries a LOT! I have been to Dulce Cafe twice now. I drive over an hour just to go. I absolutely love the atmosphere and vibes here. There is indoor and outdoor seating Pastries are absolutely beautiful and tasty! The only down side is getting them to go, they may begin to melt. So because of that we just sit and enjoy our sweet treats in the cafe. Unapologetic, rude! I was appalled, and angry. I was with my mother, brother, and husband when we got there. It wasn't too busy, we were the first in line. We ordered. I asked for a chocolate cake and a chai tea latte. My mother ordered carrot cake and decaf coffee, my brother ordered the chocolate cake and coffee, and my husband ordered the mushroom cake and black coffee. We also got a tiramisu to go. We didn't order anything to be cooked. It was premade. We sat down and my husband and brother got their drinks and cakes. My mother and I waited but we didn't get anything. We waited for over 10 minutes. My mother had to flag a waitress down to ask how much longer it would take, and she looked at our table and went, "Oh. They didn't bring out the food?" We shook our heads no because we were still waiting on our drinks and cake. She went to go check on our order. She brought back my chocolate cake, my mother's carrot cake, and the tiramisu. We reminded her it was supposed to be "to go" and asked for a box. Still, no drinks for me or my mother. I was getting impatient because tables that had sat down after us had already gotten their drinks and left. We were still waiting. Eventually, the waitress came back and showed us the order. They had never even given us the receipt, but apparently they never even put my latte or my mothers decaf coffee on the ticket. My mother asked for the receipt, which they gave to her to look over. I ate my cake. It was good. But it was ruined by how angry I was becoming. Normally, I wouldn't write a review because I have worked in the service industry. I understand. However, this next part is why I decided I needed to write a review. My husband felt bad that they forgot our drinks, so he went up to order my chai tea latte and my mothers decaf. When he finally got to the front of the line- and this is according to him- the older lady at the register was rude to him. Rude to him for ordering drinks that we should've already gotten. Rude to him for giving them the chance to correct their mistake. She was short with him. He said that the drinks were for his wife and mother-in- law, and the cashier had the gall to say "Oh, I know." Like, really?? If you knew, why didn't our drinks come out the first time? Anyways, they brought out our drinks. It didn't make us feel better. The most horrendous part about this experience was their lack of accountability, their lack of tact, and complete lack of apology. Not ONCE did they apologize for making us wait over 10 minutes for premade food. Not ONCE did they apologize for missing our order and failing to put it on the ticket. Not once did they apologize for forgetting to hand us the receipt and making it our problem. They didn't even try to compensate. I was appalled! I would never treat a customer this way. And to be rude after ordering a second time? Unacceptable. The total was over 60$. It was not worth the trouble. The service alone makes me now steer clear of this place. I'm convinced that the only customers they still have are ones that haven't had a bad experience like ours yet. I will never be coming back. The photo is JUST the receipt from my husband making that second order just for me and my mothers drinks. Both, together, came to almost 9 dollars. The drinks were small btw. Goodness, this place is worth the hype! I don't think we have ever had pastries this delectable! We loved the pear and mushroom (fun guy) ones the best. Apple was also a strong contender. The bear and the mango were also very good, but we preferred the first three. We can't wait to come back and try more! It was busy, but we brought our patience with us. :) The staff was very friendly, and they had a large patio outside if you couldn't find a place to eat inside. We landed and headed straight to this place before it closed since we were only in town until morning. We came specifically to try the viral fruit desserts, but when we arrived around 4, they were sold out. That was disappointing--especially after going 20 minutes out of our way--but I decided to try the carrot cake instead. I'm very picky about carrot cake, and this one was delicious! Arguably one of my favorite coffee shops in the Raleigh/Durham area! Dulce Cafe offers a great selection hot and cold brews and delicious and really good looking pastries. This place is instagrammable! I had a hot latte with a chocolate cookie and a giant coconut macaroon. Everything was delicious. Service was fantastic, common areas were clean and comfortable with a diverse vibe and the location is easy to find with plenty of free parking. Overall, 100% recommended. read more

I am a self proclaimed foodie and I will travel to a bakery that people tell me about. Price is not an issue, but service is. I had high expectations of this bakery - too high obviously. For what I spent there (I took my son, daughter, and son-in-law), I expected decent service. It wasn't busy; we were able to find a table to fit all of us easily in the back. After 5 minutes, all they brought to our table was the cafe au lait that my son ordered and the brewed coffee that my son-in-law ordered. We waited another 15 minutes and watched the other guests get served their plates. All of us ordered already-made pastries, brewed coffee, and chai tea - nothing that would take more than 10 minutes to put together. Nothing needed to be heated or anything like that. I waved a server over to our table and she said "Oh, they must have forgotten to bring out your food." She didn't apologize. She eventually brought out the plates but didn't bring out my nor my daughter's drinks. Turns out the cashier never entered our drinks. I wasn't given a receipt so I didn't see that our drinks weren't included in the tab. Again, no apologies about the delay for our overpriced food. The drinks weren't anything special - they were smaller than other cafes that I frequent. The pastries, while tasty and beautifully decorated, are not the best I've ever had. This was a disappointing trip for me and my family and I won't go back there based on my experience. I will find better service at other cafes and restaurants with food that is just as good if not better. I don't recommend this cafe if you want an enjoyable experience. read more

Just a 3 star because now that they did a TikTok video it is no longer a small nice coffee/pastry shop. It had lost its home charm and instead is looking into becoming a new Statbucks. When I came here on a Saturday morning, it wasn't busy and there were plenty of options. I chose the mango cake, macarons and tea. The mango cake was delicious! It was a light mousse with mango filling and a jelly coating. The macarons were crisp like they're supposed to be, and flavorful. I'd definitely like to come back and try the other desserts. While the pastries themselves are decent, the overall experience leaves much to be desired. I've waited in line for 30-40 minutes on separate visits due to only one register being open, small establishment, and slow cashier service. Unfortunately, the older staff members are consistently unfriendly and rude--I was not greeted either time, and stood at the counter for several minutes while staff discussed a separate order issue without acknowledging me. Additionally, I was charged more than the clearly labeled price on a pastry item in the case, and when I brought it up, I was told the system price was correct and the signage would not be honored. Despite giving them a second chance, the incorrect signage remained when I showed up a second time, showing a disregard for both customer service and feedback. Flies also got in the shop and landed on the open pastries behind the window and no one monitored or addressed this. Because of these repeated issues, I cannot recommend this establishment and am giving it 1 star. read more

The pear is light, refreshing, and very beautifully composed. I recommend taking a scope from top down with the caramel on the side. It was lovely. The ambiance is a typical cafe with upbeat music. It's a great spot for a first date or a small friend gathering. My only critique on this establishment would be on the crust. I was opting for a firm, but chewable texture. The crust is a struggle to break by 3pm, and after tasting it, I can only compare it to chalk. I hate to say it, because the rest of the dessert was so pleasant. First, please let me note the quality of customer service, it was superb! When you're looking for a treat, I tell ya, there's so much to choose from. You have mini-cakes, gelato, éclairs, and so much more. Carrotopia: Carrot cake layer, pineapple mousse rum, and pineapple foam. Do not be fooled, this "little" slice of cake will feed two people. It is so rich, I would be impressed if one person finished it. They topped this off with a pineapple macaroon, I felt like it was a dessert w/in a dessert. A good one, at that. Chocolate hazelnut éclair: If you're a lover of hazelnut and chocolate, you'll love this. They successfully, were able to balance the two. You were able to taste the chocolate, just as much as you were able to taste the hazelnut. Chai Tea Latte (Iced) - NO, thank you! I don't know what went wrong, but it was awful. It could be, I'm so used to Starbucks, nothing can come close to what I'm used to. If I visit that area again, they will be one of my stops! Try it, I dare you! read more

Drove 2 1/2 hours to come to a tiktok on the map cafe, they are out of all the viral desserts that put them on the map....however even though opened until 8pm they were out at 12 ....wasted trip. Order the viral fruit shaped desserts a day ahead and you'll guarantee getting the ones you want. I preferred the apple, the mushroom (Fun Guy) and the lemon. Unfortunately our visit to Dulce cafe was not a good experience mostly due to interaction with staff. We ordered an iced chai latte and a turkey panini. Upon ordering we were interrupted twice from other employees talking to the staff member whom took our order. Once receiving our chai latte we tried to and it was way too sweet so we requested to have it remade. The staff who was making the coffees was noticeably annoyed. My wife thanked her for remaking it and after I tried it I went up to the counter and thanked her myself and said that it was much better. She just nodded and rolled her eyes at me. We had been waiting still for our turkey panini that we ordered 15mins ago before a staff member asked if we were waiting for something else but did not check on the order. After 10 more minutes another staff member asked us if we are waiting on an order and what it was went to check on the order which was clearly already ready but sitting out near the orders but was not yet placed in a Togo bag. The panini was alright 6/10 and the newly made chai was a 4/10. More then likely will not be returning due the encounters we had while we were there with the staff. read more

Their cakes are amazing, one of the best tasting ones I have tried but unfortunately there got to be better system with ordering. The lines are incredibly long especially on weekends (took almost an hour total). First you have to wait in line to order and then wait to pick up your order. Unfortunately with the large amount of orders people behind the counter may not always get the orders right and last time item I had ordered and was available at the time of ordering was somehow sold out by the time I finally got my order. I really wish you could place online order for cakes and pastries beforehand. read more

Dulce has a great selection of sweets and food. My neighbor was raving about it and wanted me to come check it out with him, so I did. Dulce is a corner cafe that doesn't look like much on the outside, but inside is where you see what it has to offer. The front display case shows the featured sweets and you have the yellow menu to choose your main fare. They have alcohol if you want an afternoon drink. Otherwise, they have your coffee shop staples. There's plenty of seating inside and outside along the windows. My neighbor and I got a Cuban sandwich, a turkey panini, an iced coffee, an iced chai latte, and shared a mushroom-shaped cake called "the Fun Guy." Get the pun? The panini was done great. Toasted well, not burnt. The side salad was good. My neighbor's Cuban looked great too. The dessert was unique, and lived up to its name! Mary took care of us and overheard our conversation. Stopped by here for a drink and a dessert. I was amazing by how fun the desserts looked. There were desserts in the shape of mushrooms, apples and pears. They each looked perfectly crafted and whimsical. I however decided to go with the truffles, the truffles were 2.99 or 3 for $8. I decided to get 3. I got the strawberry, the pina colada, and the passion fruit lemon. The best thing is that each of the varieties were made in house. I think that is what truly sets this place apart. And plus they were soo delicious. The place itself is pretty small. My husband got the chai latte and said it was good.
