    Cheese Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich
    Rich M.

Really cool local coffee spot in Durham. This place was packed when we went which is a good sign. They have a decent amount of indoor seating and some places to sit outside as well. The coffee was decent however the cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich we got was outstanding. This I feel overshadowed our drinks. The servers are friendly and ambiance is what you'd expect from a coffee establishment. I'd come back to this place.

This Joe Van Gogh location is our go-to coffee shop because of proximity. When we first moved to the area, my wife searched Google and Yelp for a good local coffee shop near us. Joe Van Gogh was the winner. My wife, who's the real coffee aficionado between us, likes this place. She comes here way more than me. Everything I've had from here has been good to great. Needless to say, it gets my recommendation if you're looking for a solid local coffee shop. This location opened in late 2015 in the Woodcroft Shopping Center ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/woodcroft-shopping-center-durham ), not far from Southpoint and the Durham-Chapel Hill border. We always enter this shopping center from the back, via 54. We often park in one of the to-go spots, right outside the entrance, because we're usually stopping by before hitting the road and/or running errands. Our favorite things to get are the hot and iced lattes with macadamia or oat milk and the iced matcha latte, also with macadamia or oat milk. For the hot and iced lattes, our favorite flavors have been orange blossom and rose cardamom (seasonal). We've also tried the nitro cold brew (yummy). Joe Van Gogh roasts their own coffee and the seasonal syrups are made in-house. Expect to spend about $7-8 for a 16 or 20 oz cup after tax and tip. Enter your phone number at checkout to earn loyalty rewards points which get you discounts on future purchases. Free savings just for being a repeat customer. We've also purchased bags of coffee here and at the Whole Foods in Chapel Hill (mostly here). We've gotten the Red River Blend, Sea Turtle Blend, and Ethiopia Sidamo. The bags cost around $14-16 each. At Joe Van Gogh, the staff can ground the coffee for you in-store. At Whole Foods, we grind it ourselves. One cool thing about Joe Van Gogh is if you buy a bag of coffee, you get a free cup of coffee. They usually have two different types of hot coffee brewed and you get to choose one of them for your free cup. In general, Joe Van Gogh coffee is high quality and tastes good. I haven't tried the food here, but my wife has. She's had both the London Fog Scone ($3.50) and the weekend special Biscuits & Gravy ($8). She said both were tasty. Service has always been great. The staff is nice. We've never had to wait long for our coffee. As for the coffee shop itself, it's a typical cafe. It's spacious with a variety of seating -- bar, table, outdoor (covered). The Wi-Fi speed has been decent. At the time of writing this review, Joe Van Gogh has two locations in Durham (this one and one on Broad Street near downtown) and one location in Chapel Hill (Timberlyne Village shopping center). My wife prefers this location to the Broad Street location because this location is bigger and has easier parking. Fun fact: Joe Van Gogh is served at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus. My wife likes to get it when she's working there.

One of my go to spots for work days! I love their mocha latte and their grits and egg is soo good! The people that work there are super cool as well! Always a laid back, local vibe. Great place to catch up with a friend or get some work done.

Love this place! Super inclusive and they're pretty intentional with the environment. They have eco friendly products and also different trash compartments depending on the type of waste. A great area to study or catch up with friends, they have plenty of seating inside and outside. I appreciate the music they play that is just in the background, alongside the hanging plants, LGBTQ+ friendly. They also have a nice little selection of goodies you can buy too. I got the iced matcha latte with whole milk, it's what you would expect it to taste, can't really go wrong. I also got the garden frittata with a side salad, I love the shishito peppers (these aren't spicy) and the kick of curry flavor that adds to the depth of it. Paired together with the garden salad with what I assume to be lemon and olive oil dressing, it goes really well together. Will have to come back to study again and try their other goodies!

Such a cozy spot that feels like you're tucked away in a warm blanket. Impeccable vibes, delicious food, smooth coffee, and decent prices. My frittata had the perfect combination of flavors and I enjoyed the arugula on the side . I added toast to the order and am so glad I did! The flavor and crunch enhanced the rest of the breakfast to another level.

Ham, egg and cheese on biscuit. 5!!!! Also pictured: toasted coconut latte, pretty good!

Solid stop for solid coffee and limited (but tasty) breakfast options. Friendly staff and clean venue!

Came here for a coffee the other day and ended up loving this place. I got one of their specialty lattes (rosé cardamom latte). This coffee was absolutely amazing with hints of rose and cardamom really bringing it all together. I also got the sandwich pictured and it is pretty much a tomato mozzarella sandwich BUT with the roasted red peppers which really added a great flavor. The bread was also great and loved it. The vibes on the inside were good with plenty of open seating both inside and outside. They also have coffee beans you can take home if you're interested. Staff was friendly and not too long of a line. Plenty of parking and reasonably priced as well. Overall, I enjoyed this coffee shop and will be back for sure to try some of their other drinks and food!

    Iced Vanilla Latte
    JJ C.

Atmosphere: A local favorite, Joe Van Gogh has a cute, welcoming interior. Our favorite place to sit is in front of the large windows on the bar chairs. Service:The baristas have always been friendly and served our drinks quickly. Food: We've tried their iced vanilla latte and matcha latte. Their iced vanilla latte has a perfect balance of sweetness and espresso flavor. The matcha latte was a bit watered down for our liking, so we'd probably stick with their coffee options in the future. Overall: Joe Van Gogh is in our rotation of favorite cafes in the Durham area. Their iced vanilla latte is worth getting, and the environment to work/study is lovely!

    Joanne H.

Delicious . They have seasonal toasts and plentiful lattes. Note when they're busy the food does take a bit of time but not too long! I also enjoy the space within the cafe for lots of studying or working. Great ambiance.

The reviews were glowing, and repeatedly warned about the wait, that my expectations were probably set too high going in. I got the steak and eggs crepe and added avocado, extra steak, and kale. The eggs sit on top, and mine came closer to over-hard than the over-medium I asked for -possibly from sitting in the to-go box for 15 minutes, so I'll give some benefit of the doubt there. The crepe itself was tasty, and honestly I'd come back to try something off the sweets menu. But the fillings didn't land. The steak was a little chewy, and the mushrooms were cut too thick for a crepe -- they made it hard to cut cleanly and felt out of place. The add-ons I'll leave alone since those were my call. Overall the dish felt fairly run-of-the-mill against the hype. One note: this might be a dish better served by not allowing customizations, to keep it consistent to its intent. What threw me is that "steak and eggs" is the menu item, yet they also offer a carne asada crepe with no eggs ...so the only real difference is eggs placed on top, which doesn't change the crepe itself. Felt clear as mud after unboxing my meal. The latte I got was standard. Nothing wrong with it, nothing memorable. TL:DR this read as a solid fallback breakfast more than the must-try the reviews promised. The dogs I saw at the outside tables kept this closer to a 3.5 than falling on the other side of 3.

There is plenty of parking on the backside of the building, paid parking out front, and be careful not to park in the apartment spaces on the side...they sounded pretty serious about towing. I had made a reservation but it was probably unnecessary as it was pretty empty when we arrived (it was about 5pm on a Saturday.) The waitress brought a bottle of water to the table and took our drink order. And I know that this place is literally call it's a Southern thing but can I mention how much I dislike drinking out of mason jars? I ordered the chicken n biscuits, my husband got the country hamburger steak plate, my BiL got wings, and my SiL got the crabcakes. We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.

This new East Durham location is a little smaller than the old one, but they kept the brick aesthetic and the same jazz décor; it has great vibes, but it can get a little noisy with large groups. They now have a small parking lot. The new building has charm, although the surrounding area feels industrial and somewhat run-down. One of the restaurant's windows was boarded up, broken glass had spread into the parking-lot entrance, and barbed wire was visible from our table. The chicken is always tangy and moist. I don't know what they put in the breading, but I'm like a moth to a flame to that stuff. The mac and cheese is some of the best in the Triangle. Our server, Lanyah, was a hustler! While there, she had 9 tables, and one of them was a large group of about 10 people. My wife and I each ordered A Classy Hen with a Baby Blueberry and a Peach Apricot Shmear. I liked the Peach Apricot better. My wife got fresh fruit as her side, which was mostly just orange slices. This, unfortunately, is the end of any positives. Because it was just Lanyah, the service was slow, and it appears from our various times coming to Dame's that slow service is the rule, not the exception. Our server said that it was typical to have just a single server, one cook, and a busser--who was not that helpful. Lanyah was still busing some tables and when there was a loud crash that sounded like dishes falling, she ran and checked on it herself. It took her a minute to get us water and then take our order, but it was understandable. She hugged my wife when we were leaving when we told her she deserved better. The cook was doing their best, but it took 48-minutes and 49 seconds to get our order after it was put in...yes, I timed it. One family walked out due to the long wait. There was another male staff member-I'm not sure whether he was the manager, but he spent most of the evening sitting in the bar area. He was not seating people, bringing out orders or drinks, or helping out our overwhelmed server. They were supposed to close at 7:30pm, but we walked out the door at 8:05pm and the large party was still there waiting for their food, with the other man still sitting in the bar. We want to love Dame's, but slow service just overshadows everything else that is positive. Until they hire an appropriate number of staff, we will not be back.
