This Joe Van Gogh location is our go-to coffee shop because of proximity. When we first moved to the area, my wife searched Google and Yelp for a good local coffee shop near us. Joe Van Gogh was the winner. My wife, who's the real coffee aficionado between us, likes this place. She comes here way more than me. Everything I've had from here has been good to great. Needless to say, it gets my recommendation if you're looking for a solid local coffee shop. This location opened in late 2015 in the Woodcroft Shopping Center ( https://www.yelp.com/biz/woodcroft-shopping-center-durham ), not far from Southpoint and the Durham-Chapel Hill border. We always enter this shopping center from the back, via 54. We often park in one of the to-go spots, right outside the entrance, because we're usually stopping by before hitting the road and/or running errands. Our favorite things to get are the hot and iced lattes with macadamia or oat milk and the iced matcha latte, also with macadamia or oat milk. For the hot and iced lattes, our favorite flavors have been orange blossom and rose cardamom (seasonal). We've also tried the nitro cold brew (yummy). Joe Van Gogh roasts their own coffee and the seasonal syrups are made in-house. Expect to spend about $7-8 for a 16 or 20 oz cup after tax and tip. Enter your phone number at checkout to earn loyalty rewards points which get you discounts on future purchases. Free savings just for being a repeat customer. We've also purchased bags of coffee here and at the Whole Foods in Chapel Hill (mostly here). We've gotten the Red River Blend, Sea Turtle Blend, and Ethiopia Sidamo. The bags cost around $14-16 each. At Joe Van Gogh, the staff can ground the coffee for you in-store. At Whole Foods, we grind it ourselves. One cool thing about Joe Van Gogh is if you buy a bag of coffee, you get a free cup of coffee. They usually have two different types of hot coffee brewed and you get to choose one of them for your free cup. In general, Joe Van Gogh coffee is high quality and tastes good. I haven't tried the food here, but my wife has. She's had both the London Fog Scone ($3.50) and the weekend special Biscuits & Gravy ($8). She said both were tasty. Service has always been great. The staff is nice. We've never had to wait long for our coffee. As for the coffee shop itself, it's a typical cafe. It's spacious with a variety of seating -- bar, table, outdoor (covered). The Wi-Fi speed has been decent. At the time of writing this review, Joe Van Gogh has two locations in Durham (this one and one on Broad Street near downtown) and one location in Chapel Hill (Timberlyne Village shopping center). My wife prefers this location to the Broad Street location because this location is bigger and has easier parking. Fun fact: Joe Van Gogh is served at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus. Love this place! Super inclusive and they're pretty intentional with the environment. They have eco friendly products and also different trash compartments depending on the type of waste. A great area to study or catch up with friends, they have plenty of seating inside and outside. I appreciate the music they play that is just in the background, alongside the hanging plants, LGBTQ+ friendly. They also have a nice little selection of goodies you can buy too. I got the iced matcha latte with whole milk, it's what you would expect it to taste, can't really go wrong. I also got the garden frittata with a side salad, I love the shishito peppers (these aren't spicy) and the kick of curry flavor that adds to the depth of it. Paired together with the garden salad with what I assume to be lemon and olive oil dressing, it goes really well together. Came here for a coffee the other day and ended up loving this place. I got one of their specialty lattes (rosé cardamom latte). This coffee was absolutely amazing with hints of rose and cardamom really bringing it all together. I also got the sandwich pictured and it is pretty much a tomato mozzarella sandwich BUT with the roasted red peppers which really added a great flavor. The bread was also great and loved it. The vibes on the inside were good with plenty of open seating both inside and outside. They also have coffee beans you can take home if you're interested. Staff was friendly and not too long of a line. Plenty of parking and reasonably priced as well. There are no indoor seats. Sadly, Covid restrictions are still limiting operations. On better days, this is a good place for students to chill out after a long day of learning. Get some homework done over a pick-me-up and a snack. My neighbor and I got coffee and pastries and sat down to catch up. It was a cold, chilly day. This location is near our home but honestly we don't visit much because we prefer some other local coffee shops. Their drinks are fine hut we just find the decor and ambiance kind of generic. We prefer coffee shops with a little more cozy feel. We were waiting for the hardware store to open and we popped in to get my wife a chai latte. Again, the coffee is fine but the atmosphere is meh. This store is taking orders thru a window and the door, inside closed to public. It looks super cute inside so I was bummed to not go in, but also glad they are being safe. I love their regular coffee but wanted to try a specialty so I went for a lavender latte. It's made with their homemade syrup and it was so good! It was more, earthy, or botanical than sweet, which I liked. Still strong and served nice and hot. The service was fast and professional. There is outdoor seating. I did not stay since there was already a group of college aged young ones studying and a guy having a full on zoom meeting where everyone could hear and I didn't feel like conducting business on my day off. I've been here before, but it's been a while. Stopped in while running errands for just a few minutes while the workers are busy on the house. Always good coffee with Joe, cappuccino was light with good micro foam, not just a little frothy. Muffin was tasty without being overly sweet. They have tables outside front and back, as well as a few spots inside. They are masking and social distancing, but no one's being a jerk about it. Wifi is fast and easy to acquire. I asked for heavy cream but unfortunately the lady filled my cup so full with coffee there wasn't much room for cream. Not a big deal. Happy to see sugar free flavors with zero carbs. The two employees we interacted with weren't overly friendly, maybe an off morning. The corona virus is upsetting everyone so I feel like many people are off these days. I'll start by saying that when we used to live near Woodcroft 5+ years ago, we LOVED this place. We patronized the shop 3-5 times per week and every weekend at least once. Since that time though everything has gone drastically downhill and I can't believe how terrible the service and product is now. Their mobile app through Toast is awful. It takes forever to use, often many items aren't even available which you don't find out until you try to order. It's complicated and poorly laid out. It takes us the entire 15 minute drive from our house just to get the order placed. Then, no matter when we've put the order in on the app, it has literally never been ready when we arrive for pickup. It doesn't matter what we order (ready to go or fresh to cook), we always end up having to wait. Absolutely ridiculous. What's the point of having the app? Then let's get to the actual food and beverage. The coffee beverages are fine. Not the best and not the worst but certainly not good enough to overcome the poor food experience that happens with every visit. The last three times I've ordered scones they have been so hard they're inedible. They don't seem fresh which might be why they're so hard. The muffins I've gotten recently are just flat out burned (see image from this morning). We've had multiple undercooked, still doughy biscuits. The list just goes on and on. Suffice it to say, I'm done with JVG. Save yourself the waste of time and money and just go somewhere, anywhere else. I wish it were different or the way it used to be but until they turn it around, they don't deserve my, or anyone else's, business. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

I love that they compost! I would give five stars, but when I want to study, seating is difficult to find and there are few spots for plugging in a low battery. Going to the counter takes absolutely forever - each customer wants to have a full conversation with the staff. The to-go orders are ridiculously long - 55-65mins for online orders for simple coffee and muffins. Traditionally the staff there has absolute zero sense of urgency, no sense of awareness of their surroundings and are clearly undertrained. I've been drinking coffee black for the past 3 years, so I'll have to admit that I'm a snob for it haha I ordered a large Nitro Cold brew coffee! One thing that I've noticed with this large size compared to typically buying medium sized drinks from other coffee shops is caffeine content. Usually after a downing a medium cold brew, I would get the jitters, bad. This large sized cold brew tastes like a medium-dark roast with a lower caffeine content, and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've had with consistently in the taste of the coffee while able to drink the whole thing with minimal jitters Definitely coming back to try something NOT black, but also recommend it! I love it! These guys have great coffee, quick service and a nice breakfast menu. I was passing through the area on a road trip and stayed with a friend who took me to breakfast here. I ended up enjoying the cappuccino and breakfast so much that I came back after dropping him off at home so I could get a triple latte to hit the road with.
