Vessel is an interesting little spot in Durham, tucked away just enough that you could walk right past it if you weren't paying attention, with almost no outside signage to pull you in. Step inside, though, and the place opens up into a colorful mix of local and ethnic art, walls covered in posters championing every political stance imaginable, a kind of visual chaos that somehow feels intentional. It's the sort of environment where you could spend ten minutes just looking around and deciding if the decor is charming or overwhelming, but I found it surprisingly easy to tune all of that out once my coffee order was called out. This was the cutest coffee shop that I stumbled upon through TikTok! It was very arts and crafty which is good for the creatives. The two coffees that I got were the Granny Smith latte and the salted maple matcha. The Granny Smith latte was a 8.5/10 and the salted maple matcha was a 4/10 due to the grassy taste. I've been meaning to try Vessel for ages and finally got the chance to do so! It's such a cute, under-rated coffee shop in Durham imo. I got the iced salted maple matcha latte, which is a fall seasonal special, and it was absolutely delicious- probably a top matcha I've gotten in the city. I will say space is the biggest limitation here: if you're wanting a space to camp out & get work done, you'll need to come pretty early in the day to snag a spot. Service is super friendly and fast. There's a lot of street parking. If you're artsy, they have like an art corner and lots of events, advertised on their Instagram. We were there for the day of the re-opening of EverLou as Vessel Café. We had never come under the café's previous ownership, as we only discovered the place when we heard about the re-opening. I like their coffee a lot, the art on the wall, the welcoming atmosphere... The fact that the coffee is far from the Downtown is awesome because the atmosphere is calmer. The place is charming. They used Dark Matter Coffee from Chicago in one of their iced lattes and it's pretty good and original. The Peach Cobbler Latte is a nice signature summer drink; we got it iced, with oat milk, because it's hot outside. There's a part for people who want to draw and you can buy art supplies. Atmosphere: EverLou is a small coffee shop with a minimalistic menu and seasonal offerings. Their interior is clean but has limited seating. We also love that they're dog friendly! Service: Our barista was friendly and gave us recommendations for her favorite seasonal drinks. Despite being the only person working at the counter that particular morning, she made our drinks quite promptly! Food: We ordered an Iced Toffee Oat Latte and a Hot Gingerbread Latte. The Toffee Oat Latte wasn't that flavorful or unique, and had more of a generic "sweet" coffee taste to it rather than a toffee flavor. Unfortunately, the Gingerbread Latte did not have much of a gingerbread "spicy" flavor and tasted more like a plain latte. We felt that the Toffee Oat Latte and Gingerbread Latte could have had a lot more potential and left us with a mediocre coffee experience. Overall: We really wanted to love EverLou, as we had heard great things about the shop and loved the idea of it being an oat milk based shop. However, the drinks did not impress us, and we felt that our drinks weren't worth the price. We hope to give EverLou another try but with lower expectations. read more

Everlou is my favorite downtown coffee shop for two reasons: the dogs and the staff. First, it's one of the few coffee shops that allow dogs inside the store. This has been seriously crucial when my power has gone out and I needed to get work done (and also want my dogs to be cool.) Also, they give away pup cups which my dogs love. Second, the staff goes above and beyond to get to know their customers. They remember your face and even when it gets busy I never feel rushed. Oh yeah, and the coffee is great too! The space inside is small and can get crowded so just know you may need to bring a long charging cord. read more

Located right down the street from the original Salt Box location, there is plenty of street parking right around the corner from the shop. Love this coffee shop! I've been on a hunt visiting coffee shops across the triangle to see which ones are good options for remote work. This spot checks all the boxes. It's small, intimate, and cozy. Plenty of tables and plugs for working. And they have a few tables outside too. Wi-Fi is good and consistent. And I absolutely LOVE that this is an oat based cafe. When I visited, service was prompt and specials were highlighted. Parking is easy too. Plenty of parking right outside the shop--just be sure to park within the solid lines. I didn't try food on this visit but they do offer pasties. Def on the top of my list to visit again soon! read more

Cute little coffee shop with a nice variety of coffee classics and seasonal drinks! I got an iced Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte and my friend got an iced chocolate orange latte. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte is so fun and unique -- they soak Cinnamon Toast Crunch in oat milk and make a latte using that milk! If you love lattes that are on the sweeter side, definitely try this one. I'd probably ask for a little less syrup next time, but otherwise it was everything I've ever dreamed of. :-) I tried a little of the chocolate orange latte as well, and it looked like there were some chocolate chunks in there, which is always fun. It's not nearly as sweet as the CTC latte if sweet coffee isn't for you. There were 2 outdoor tables, as well as a few indoor ones and some armchairs. At some point I fear that Durham might hit a saturation point of coffee shops, especially near the general downtown area (Beyu, Oak House, Jetplane Coffee, Cocoa Cinnamon, etc.), not to mention bakeries and other shops that also offer coffee. Anyway, I'd rather support local establishments than chain coffee places any day. The vibe is here is more open and bright with open spaces and colorful artwork as opposed to somber and studious, although it looks like you are welcome to sit and study as well. Check out the artwork in the bathroom for a smile, especially if you like animals. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our chai and mocha drinks. Looks like they also have some rotating specials like flavored lattes (toffee, cinnamon crunch, etc.). They are charity-minded and also participate in the Shop Local Durham card program. I stopped by EverLou this morning to grab coffee with a friend before class. It's a super cute little cafe- would be a great place to study or just catch up!! We both had toffee oat lattes, which were recommended to us by the barista. They were tasty; sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and the creaminess of the oat milk was a nice touch. Something that makes EverLou unique is that all drinks are oat milk-based, so there's no upcharge, which is definitely a plus. I thought the prices were reasonable and service was really friendly. And dare I say, This may have been the best latte I've ever had. I consider myself a bit of a coffee addict. I enjoy just about any form of coffee on this planet. From a cup of black hot coffee, to an iced sugary latte with rich milk OR diary free milk. I love them all, BUT I am extremely particular when I make a coffee recommendation. An excellent little coffee shop in the heart of downtown Durham. Everlou coffee is a wonderful addition to the coffee shops in downtown Durham. Surprisingly downtown Durham doesn't have a ton of places to get coffee. There's honestly more pizza places than there are coffee shops in downtown Durham, so it's always nice to have a new contender enter the coffee shop arena. What I love about Everlou is that it's very much a coffee by definition. A small quiet place where you can get coffee from a staff that knows coffee and get a little work done or catch up with a friend. It's not a trendy hangout place like Cocacinnmon and has more of a Bean Trader's feel (without the judgy baristas).  This place also is perfectly located in walking distance to most places downtown and super convenient for those that live in the area as well. The staff is very friendly and the owner seems incredibly passionate about coffee. Make sure to try their specialty toffee syrup while you're there, it tastes fantastic in iced coffee (also probably hot too) but iced coffee all day every day. read more

I really loved this new coffee spot! It is conveniently located to many things but also tucked away into a quieter corner of downtown Durham. The space is nice, cozy, and bright with beautiful art decorating the walls. The chairs were comfortable and it was nice and peaceful. I could see this being a good place to get some work done. The coffee was very good; I loved how they had both the tried and true coffee classics and also some creative features of their own. I tried one of their rotating "cereal milk" specials, the Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte. The pairing of the oatmilk and cinnamon sugar was really tasty.
