A long-time favorite of mine here in Durham, particularly for anyone wanting a place to study. They have a ton of tables, free coffee refills, and lots of outlets. The lighting is good, the music is at an appropriate volume, and the seating is comfortable (particularly in the back room). During the weekends and on holidays they can be quite full (particularly during the school year), but generally speaking I can usually find a seat here. Baristas are friendly and competent. They are well-staffed, and even when there is a long line things come out quickly! There is also free parking available in the parking garage around the corner, which is certainly a bonus. My go-to here is simply an iced americano or coffee, but their seasonal drinks are also delicious. Can't recommend enough! read more

It's time for "second coffee" and my office for the morning, landing at Foster Street at around 8:30 am. Parking wasn't easy since I can't fit into a parking deck but a metered space opened up and I was able to jam into there. Warmly welcomed and my cortado was ready before I'd even finished plugging in the laptop. Strong coffee that had a deep flavor and I'd already had breakfast so I was able to resist the pastries. An hour in, another cup of drip was all I needed while I did the Internet thing. Foster Street is conducive to laptop but it did get a bit loud in there with the talking, the music and the sound of the espresso machine. But if you can handle all of that, it's ideal. A good morning always stars off with coffee so this was the perfect stop. I was skeptical of the sweetness of the Foster Select Latte at first since it came with vanilla, honey, and lavender syrup. However, it was the perfect blend of flavors and floral notes. There's plenty of indoor seating but most of it was occupied by people working or studying. Ambience and space was perfect! Lots of seating, bright lighting, and even some tables and chairs outside. Coffee was 4/5 because the flavors weren't entirely strong and I do love sweet lattes. We got an iced vanilla, an iced caramel with oat, and then a hot maple spice latte with oat milk. Hear me out... the maple spice kind of tasted like Indian food. I guzzled that down. Ambiance is nice: there's a lot of seating inside, but it's so busy that you may have a hard time finding a spot. We enjoyed the lattes and chia bowl we had from Foster Street Coffee. If you're looking for a good coffee shop in downtown Durham, I recommend this place. Service was good and we enjoyed hanging out at the cafe too. We stopped by Foster Street Coffee during a trip to the Durham Farmers' Market: https://www.yelp.com/biz/durham-farmers-market-durham. This coffee shop gets busy during farmers' market hours: Saturday mornings, year-round and Wednesday afternoons, spring through fall. Expect a longer wait during farmers' market hours. We had a hot Caramel Latte (12 oz for $4.50) with oat milk (+$1), an iced Foster Select Latte (20 oz for $5.50) with almond milk (+$1), and a Chia Bowl ($4.75) from the display case. The "Foster Select" is a latte prepared with vanilla, honey, and lavender. I'm a fan of sweet and creamy lattes. The iced Foster Select was less sweet than we both anticipated. Not bad, though. Still refreshing. I liked the hot Caramel Latte better. It was smooth, comforting, and hit the spot. I'd order it again. The Chia Bowl was delicious. Parts of it tasted like a pudding dessert because of the sweetness and texture. The bottom layer of the bowl was chia seeds I think soaked in coconut milk. The top layer had small slices of Mandarin orange and lots of coconut flakes. The middle layer contained pineapple and I believe some other seeds or nuts. Overall, the bowl was really good, and healthy too. Despite the cafe being packed, our order came out in a reasonable amount of time. The men's restroom was clean. Foster Street Coffee is located next door to the Durham Food Hall, on the ground level of the Liberty Warehouse apartments. Street parking is available directly in front of the cafe on Foster St. At the time of writing this review, it costs $2.50 per hour, Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm. My friend brought me here because she strongly recommended their consistent quality of coffee. I very much enjoyed the Foster Latte which involved honey, vanilla, and lavender. Conveniently located in Downtown Durham next to the Food Hall, it's ideal for a quick coffee run or study session. Their interior is bright and clean. Keep in mind that it can be difficult to find a seat especially during the academic school year. Their wifi can also get pretty slow during busier hours. Service: Our barista was kind, and our drinks were made quickly. Food: We ordered their Cold Brew and Hot Toffee Nut Latte. We can confidently say that this was the worst cold brew we've ever had. It was bitter and had no complexity. When we first tried it, our immediate thoughts were "burnt," "tastes like medicine," and "is this really their cold brew??" The Toffee Nut Latte had potential, but it was overpowered by the syrup and hardly had notes of coffee. Overall: We were excited to give Foster Street Coffee a try due to their aesthetically pleasing interior and hype from friends. However, we were extremely disappointed by their drinks. Popped into Foster Street Coffee with my husband and daughter while we were out on a scooter/OneWheel ride around Durham. Initially we were worried about wheeling in our scooter but the staff was welcoming. We found a spot with some comfy chairs in the back near the restroom which had enough space for our scooter and stroller. The staff was very conversational and asked us questions about our 4 month old. We got an iced chai latte and iced coffee. The iced coffee was pretty standard but the iced chai latte was amazing! I kept stealing it from my husband and wished I had ordered it for myself. We also got a chocolate croissant, which was good but don't think I would get it again. On our continued trek to find the coffee shop in Durham, we landed at Foster Street Coffee. This is the place where the hip come to sit and enjoy their Java with their laptops and do homework. That is the downside as there was no seating due to the laptop mafia. As a result we sat outside on a brisk morning. The place allows dogs and I'm starting to think I need to bring my epipen (allergy) with me more and more. The mocha latte was outstanding and the chocolate croissant was divine. Delicious!!!! We happened upon this place while in town and WOW. The ambiance is bright and lively, yet subtly quiet and serene. Tons of two-top tables and private corners for studying and finishing up work. I brought in my two toddlers and French bulldog and it suited us tremendously well. Customer service is magnificent! The waffles are absolutely a breakfast dream. There's little clumps of sugar actively melting into the waffle as you eat it. You don't need syrup or honey or anything. I had no idea what I wanted for coffee so I just told the lady what I prefer and she made one of the best cups of coffee I've had in a long time. Favorite coffee shop in Durham! The coffee is excellent, I especially love the Foster Select. The bluebird sandwich was good too! It's the perfect spot to do some work. Bright and and airy. Plenty of tables and outlets. Gets full in the afternoons but I've always been able to find a seat. I'm nervous it'll get harder to snag one once students are back from summer break. There's a conference room available to rent out as well. They're open every day of the week including Sundays, and are open until 6pm which is later than most other cafes around here. Durham is blessed with many coffee shops and it seems every month there's a new one. We stopped by recently for coffee after visiting the Farmers Market on a Saturday. It was good to see them busy since there were times we've wandered by in the last year and seen it kind of empty. I'm sure all of the condos and apartments popping up around them are helping a little bit. On our last visit I got a chai latte that was okay but not outstanding, plus a nice croissant. I see they have more lunch options now so might check them out for that sometime. As I mention in almost every review of a local coffee shop, I'd rather give them my money any day over Starbucks or some other large chain. read more

Visited Friday Jan 3 around 3:15 in the afternoon. Sandwiches in the case looked really nice + good selection of non meat items like yogurts, granola/protein balls and chia pudding. The young man working the register potentially has some sort of learning disability. Love to see Fosters hired this person. However the girl who was floating behind the counter was incredibly rude to him. She barked at him to remind him to write the names on the receipts. Person in front of me had a very easy name (4 letters) but he couldn't get it down. He was obviously flustered and embarrassed (even asked the barista for help with the spelling) however she never offered to help him. Instead she kept repeating it to him with an attitude. Eventually she just yanked the receipt away from him with a big huff and puff. Afterwards she was just stomping around behind the counter. Needed a place in Durham to study and complete my master's thesis. It seems Foster Street Coffee may be the best contender near Duke. It is usually bustling during the day, especially on Saturdays (which is a day I would typically avoid studying there, the line is usually to the door with everyone getting their coffee before they head to the central market). It's not so comfy that you'll doze off, but it does trick. Whenever hunger strikes I go for the breakfast burrito. It's amazing, you need to try it! Vegetarian with mozzarella, tater tots and egg. They make them in house! They seem to offer a lot of specialty drink options in terms of flavors, but I always elect for a plain lattes. It's not perfect, but it has to be one of the best in Durham and it's not Starbucks. Staff is always friendly, talkative and helpful; I cannot say the same for a majority of coffee places in the Triangle. Recommend to anyone just wanting coffee or a place to post up for studying!
