I got an orange blossom matcha latte and I'd say it was decent. The orange blossom syrup was very mild so I could taste it very well. The matcha wasn't very strong and a little overpowered with milk. I didn't try any of their coffees but they looked to be pretty good! I'd give it a 3/5 for the matcha because it was decent but I don't think I'd order it again. I have come into Joe Van Gogh multiple times, and although I like their drinks, I don't love the ambiance. The restaurant could do a better job at positioning their tables in the space to allow for more patrons to do work (and have access to outlets) without being in the way of those queuing in line for ordering. I have sat here and read a book before, and despite liking my drink, I did not love that I felt "in the way" of others. I also think the bathrooms could be a little more well maintained. However, I do enjoy both the matcha and coffee here, and think that this shop around the Triangle does coffee extremely well. The baristas are knowledgable and can provide insight into various menu options, and are also extremely kind. I will likely be back but just for a grab-and-go coffee. read more

Ok, this is officially some of the best coffee I've had in Durham. I got the maple cinnamon latte hot, which is seasonal, and it was delicious. The flavor profiles of both maple and cinnamon were present, but not overpowering; it also had the perfect amount of sweetness. There's plenty of free street parking. Service & ambiance are great. The coffee itself is fine. The space is very small, but it works as a study space if it's not busy. The prices are very high for what you get. We ordered a double espresso and received a single shot of espresso. It was evident it was only one shot and when we asked the very rude barista said that it's one... the barista also refused to be helpful when people didn't hear them above their mask. The best lattes I've ever had. Full disclosure, I am not a coffee connoisseur. However, I do know the difference between a stellar and awful latte. I decided to try this cafe after discovering how good there whole beans are while shopping at Weaver St Market. I also needed a place to work. I started with the breakfast burrito, which was pretty good, and the 12 oz latte with 2% and sugar free caramel. Wow!! Later that afternoon I tried one of their scones and another latte with cinnamon/maple sugar. It was the perfect combination and the latte was just as good as the first. I thought it might be the same barista as in the morning, but there was a shift change. So it must be the beans used? Also, the latte art was a nice touch. Although I'm not a coffee (or tea) drinker, I find myself taking frequently trips here. Conveniently placed near Ninth Street, I love the food they serve. In particular, I love ordering a savory tart and buying something from the small box of day old pastries they have and saving it for later. A day old savory tart isn't quite as good as the same day, since it gets more soggy, but I enjoy it nonetheless. On occasion, I'll enjoy an iced latte and be over caffeinated for the next few hours because I forgot to ask decaf, but their coffee tastes great in my non-coffee drinking opinion! read more

I love JVG for their iced vanilla lattes, iced matcha, and earl gray scones! Especially during the pandemic, their online ordering system made everything feel safe and like a breeze. Their seasonal drinks can be a hit or miss (the flowery ones can come off a little strong), but their permanent menu is always solid. OMG the cold brew with chocolate milk is THE BEST combination my lil tongue has ever tasted! My tastebuds were having a literal blast. The coffee shop itself is cute af. Although it is to-go on for now, the outside seating is nice. Also, it's only ONE person allowed inside at all times, so make sure to have someone take everyone's orders and go in, or go in rotations. If cold brew isn't your thing, this place will change that!!! The location is nice, but could be more visible. We drove past it twice without spotting it, and called to make sure they were open and still there. Thankfully it was. It's our new favorite spot! Though I have no complaints about the coffee and will definitely be back for more specialty drinks, the breakfast burrito I had was just not great. It didn't taste fresh and was a bit soggy- the salsa on the side was the best part. It's really unfortunate that a place that treats people the way they do here is open for business. 10/3/2015 - 2nd visit: We're out of coffee and it's my boyfriend's birthday. I was making breakfast so he decided to run up and get some coffee and give this place another chance. He is one of the nicest human's I've ever met. .... He came home and said "we're never going there again, they are just mean". His experience: He orders me 2 cappuccinos in one cup and himself a large black coffee. He gets the drinks and tells the male barista there must be some sort of mistake, and explained what he ordered. The barista's response is "THAT IS WHAT IS ON THE TICKET SO THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE GETTING".... My honey says, ok, well, if you don't mind, I ordered a black coffee and this cup is half full, may I please have complete cup of coffee since that's what I ordered? The barista's response "I don't have time for that, we're too busy". (in my cup was 1/2 a cappuccino, literally the smallest to-go cup you can get, less than half full, which doesn't make sense when I see reviews on here with single full cup cappuccinos) ..... My poor guy... being treated like this is one thing... on his BIRTHDAY is just sad! 8/22/2015 - 1st visit: We moved a couple blocks from this place. Craving a capaccino we decided to give it a try. Although the space itself is typically crowded, a result of lack of coffee shops on Broad Street, Joe Van Gogh offers everything that a good, reliable coffee shop should: great coffee, friendly baristas, free wifi (with plug-in connection), community tables, pastry snacks and patio seating. Joe Van Gogh roasts their own beans in house (which you can also buy in the shop) and they're delicious! I am hands down a fan of their black coffee, but they typically have interesting coffee add-ons and syrups (most recently I noticed a rosemary flavoring). It's typically not difficult to find a spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and get some work done. This is much more a work-centered shop than a socializing spot, but you can regularly expect a line to order your drink of choice. read more

I get my usual dose from the guys at 3 Cups or Driade or even Morning Times, so I know what to expect, weight-wise when I'm handed that highly anticipated cup. First time, "Double, short, dry, cappuccino" = perfection. The shop itself is small. I feel like a coffee shop should allow for some spreading out room, which would be my only real beef with the place.
