I had an amazing experience here. The owner Chris is genuinely the nicest--you can tell they actually really care about what they're doing. The food is top shelf, honestly some of the best I've had in a while. I asked the cashier what she would recommend if I wanted a light snack and an interesting hot drink. Her recommendations were exactly what I wanted. What really stands out is the menu. It's quirky and a little eclectic, but in a way that actually works. There's real thought behind the combinations, so whether you're playing it safe or trying something unexpected, there's something for you. The space has that same intentional eclecticism--it doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be cool, it just is cool. It already feels like a genuine cultural hangout, which is wild for a place that's only a few months old. There's something special happening here. Definitely coming back with friends. Super cute place in American Tobacco. The outdoor seating is bright, cheerful, and welcoming. It was a little warm when we got there around 11am on a Saturday in August so we decided to eat inside. My friend and I both ordered the breakfast sandwich. Hers as is and mine with a hard yolk. She got an iced latte and I got an Americano. We got a seat at the bar along the wall and people watched. There is plenty of adorable otter artwork everywhere. I really enjoyed that! Our sandwiches came out 5 minutes before our coffee which seemed a little odd. The americano was....an americano. Nothing special. The sandwich was cooked to my preference and VERY tasty. The bread was exceptional and the sausage was pretty amazing. Do I think that they were worth what I paid? Meh...probably not. A couple of questions: Why was it a dollar extra to make my coffee iced? Why is there a 4% pre-tax surcharge, why not just increase prices? Although I do think that $13 for my breakfast sandwich and $5 for my iced Americano (with no syrup) was already a little expensive. I do have to give major props to the staff though! Halfway through our meal, my friend's teenage son (who was a home) messaged her and asked if she would bring him home a cinnamon roll. The line was out the door at that point and my friend was dreading getting back in the queue. An employee overheard part of our conversation, grabbed my friend a cinnamon roll, and let her pay at the table. No more waiting in line. And THAT is how you get a return customer. Lutra Cafe is a great spot in the American Tobacco Campus. The vibe is fun and welcoming, and the food is really good (they have a cute otter mascot). They have coffee, morning buns, and other breakfast foods. We waited in line, but it moved pretty quick! Don't let it scare you. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and the pretzel. The pretzel was absolutely delicious. It came with a bright, spicy mustard that was also quite good. There's a decent amount of tables around the corner from ordering area. Lutra Bakery (American Tobacco Campus - Durham) As part of our ongoing effort to explore more of Durham from our home in North Raleigh, we visited Lutra Bakery on a Saturday morning for breakfast. It proved to be well worth the drive. Breakfast for two came to $48.88 plus tax and tip, including a small staff benefits surcharge. **Location & Parking** Lutra is located at the American Tobacco Campus. Parking was easy in the lot near DPAC. One small tip for first-time visitors: as you approach, you won't immediately see the bakery's sign. It's tucked down a gentle driveway on the left. The curved street in front also makes for a convenient drop-off if someone in your group has difficulty walking. Don't let the line outside discourage you. There's limited room inside for people waiting to order, so the line extends outdoors. Once we placed our order, however, we found plenty of seating inside. **Atmosphere & Service** The bakery has a warm, upbeat atmosphere with a real sense of community. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there, and the staff kept the line moving while remaining friendly and welcoming. **What We Ordered** * Breakfast Sandwich (no aioli) * Bostock * Orange Sweet Bun * Granola Bowl (Cinnamon Almond Raisin) * Ciabatta Bundle * Drip Coffee **The Food** The **Breakfast Sandwich** was excellent. Served on a house-made cheddar bun with breakfast sausage, a perfectly cooked runny egg, everything worked together beautifully. I especially appreciated that the sausage complemented the sandwich instead of overpowering it, and the cheddar bun added wonderful flavor. The **Granola Bowl** was another highlight. The fresh fruit had exceptional flavor, and the house-made cinnamon, almond, and raisin granola was among the best I've had. It was fresh, balanced, and satisfying without being overly sweet. The **Orange Sweet Bun** was also excellent. The cinnamon bun itself was well made with plenty of cinnamon flavor, while the orange icing gave it a bright, citrusy finish. Lutra offers several icing flavors, and after trying this one I'll definitely be back to sample the others. The **Bostock** was beautifully baked. My only observation was that the almond extract was so dominant that you could not taste the cardamom. We also took home a **bundle of ciabatta rolls**. They were nicely made with a good crust, though they were lighter in texture than I generally prefer. **Overall** Lutra combines excellent baking, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere in a charming setting. We enjoyed everything, This is exactly the kind of neighborhood bakery we'd happily visit again, and we'll definitely be back the next time we're exploring Durham. read more

Five stars all around! I first visited Lutra during a Yelp event where I had their Berry bun (truly a winning dish!) and decided to come back on my own to try their brunch. Unfortunately they ran out of their famous hash browns, but I thoroughly enjoyed the other items I tried. In particular, the rum caramel sweet bun was to die for; truly such a great combination of flavors with a perfectly soft bun that I will remember the taste of for a very long time. Service was efficient despite it being a Saturday morning and I love the diner style ambiance with the otter decorations and coloring sheets (lutra means otter in Latin!). Super cute new cafe!! Warmly greeted upon entering and a quick explanation and shown the menus. I like their pastry window display to see what the items look like before getting. We tried their orange bun and blueberry lemonade spritz drink and enjoyed it all. Walked around and they have a spacious back room with cute coloring pages of otters and crayons to color your own in and add it to their wall. Sadly while we were there a group of girls took the entire plate of crayons and we were unable to color ours. They just opened their brick and mortar and it is as good as their pop ups. They can now offer so many more treats and trust me they are worth the stop. I had their breakfast sandwich, granola bowl(a fave of mine), blueberry lemonade and their orange and chocolate buns. All of which were absolutely amazing. The staff was great and answered all the questions that I had. Absolutely amazing coffee!! I ordered a caramel latte with a toasted marshmallow on top and it was one of the best coffees I've had, seriously. The 100 layer hashbrowns were delicious and perfectly crispy, and the sandwiches were decent, lacked some flavor, but not awful. We came around 10 on a Saturday, and the line was out the door. Luckily the location is easy to entertain kids, so our group split up with some waiting in line to order and some watching the kids run around on the lawn. It took nearly a full hour to get our food, but it was quick to come out once we ordered. We enjoyed a variety of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, sweet buns, pretzels, and drinks, and everything felt worth the wait. The bread on the sandwiches was crispy but not tough. The flavors in the sweet bun icings and lattes were robust and matched well with the food and drinks. We'll be back! read more

I was there on Monday, Labor Day and waited in line for 40 minutes just for me to get up to the register and hear them say that they don't have any of the pastries that the owner advertised on Instagram. I left immediately feeling as though my time was wasted, and wasn't considered by the staff. Genuine customer service would be the staff announcing sold out items to the customers waiting outside in the heat. The courtesy of knowing that an item we may want to eat is no longer in stock would have given me the option to either stay and order something else or leave. I love supporting local businesses, but common courtesy is something that I look for when spending my hard earned dollar in this economy. They need to do better. read more

We visited Lutra the second day of their opening. We liked their pop-ups at Cheeni and finally they opened their first physical location at the American Tobacco Campus in Downtown Durham. It's absolutely fabulous to be in the historic district in the heart of Durham. We came at noon; some things were sold out but their were plenty of things to try still. We had the Breakfast Bar, the Chocolate Bun & the cold Carrot Sandwich. The breakfast Bar was soft and sweet with oats, coconut, and seasonal jam. The bun was moist and delicious. The chocolate sauce melted into the bun while we were eating it because we sat outside in the sun, and that only made it better. The carrot icebox sandwich was surprising because the carrots still had a crunch to them in the sandwich. It was absolutely smothered in nut-free arugula pesto and was overall refreshing for a warm day. Very good amount of food for the price. Truly everything was exceptional, from the food to the team. Lutra has an amazing team- they are, welcoming, well-organized, and are all very stylish. We will be back for sure, maybe even tomorrow! read more
