Lamb Doner with very good Biergarten seasoned fries.
    George D.

No-frills, grab a clipboard with photocopied menu pages, get on line, order at the widow, get a number, find a table, they bring your order. Friendly and engaging staff. Interesting menu... not as German as I expected, but very good. Good beer menu, with some really good options. Stopped in for brunch, which had a more limited menu. I think it's worth trying again for the more interesting dinner menu. Parking was the biggest challenge.

Set up beer-garden style with most of the seating as umbrella tables outside. There is a convenient box of menus to look at while waiting in line. You order at the counter and they give you a number-flag to take to your table for the staff to bring the food out to you when it's ready. Nice, fresh food. Decent portions. Very relaxed environment that is family-friendly.

Despite the 15-30 minute wait in line on the weekends, we keep coming back to Guglhupf for a few reasons. First, the seating just can't be beat! You can sit outside or inside, and there's tons of seating for both. This makes it great for large parties, and it's easy to pull together some tables for enough seating. Second, you can order some more coffee or a pastry from the barcode at your table. Amazing! Saves the servers time and saves you time. Third, they have some fantastic vegan options. The vegan breakfast sandwich with shakshuka is incredible. And the spicy fried tofu sandwich is one of my favorite vegan sandos (i will come here just for this sando). Overall, a Durham staple that shouldn't be missed. Fantastic for meeting someone for lunch last minute, large parties, or groups of people who like to linger over their food (you won't be hurried out).

Ambiance of the restaurant is nice, i enjoyed the outdoor seating. It feels whimsical. The food is not for me, the seasonal honey bear latte was yummy though. Not a lot of flavor but im not an expert on german food... The service was a toss up depending on the person. The man who took our order was nice! The lady in the bakery was not! Its very busy! We came early and there was still a decent line.

Had the seasonal omelet, lamb doner, and pork schnitzel. All were great and flavorful. The line outside moved pretty quick and the service was helpful. We loved being able to sit outside and get some nice sunshine in late March.

I finally made it to try Guglhupf for dinner since I've heard so much about it. It's a hike for me so I had to set some time aside for this visit. I went on a Saturday night right before closing and it was fairly empty with easy parking. The restaurant was adorably decorated with heaters throughout the patio for cold evenings. I got the pork schnitzel with kasespätzle and salad. The schnitzel was pretty good; I loved the fresh lemon to squeeze on top. The kasespätzle was also very good. It did taste fresh like it was made in house. It's not overwhelmingly cheesy. The salad was so fresh, delicious, and had a nice vinegar tang. It was a large portion so I had enough leftover for the next day's lunch. Overall, good quality and everything was tasty. Sadly, the bakery was closed during my visit, but I'd like to try it another time. It was fun to try some German cuisine and work on my German pronunciation.

I'm so upset that I moved away before discovering this GEM of a restaurant. Wow. Wow. Wow. Will absolutely be a go to every time I visit! Food - one word - stunnin'. Truly perfect. Our party tried many dishes from a tofu sandwich to a salmon salad to a Benedict with avocado and the vegan breakfast sandwich. There was no flaw whatsoever. The flavors and textures were spot on. Pictured - Blueberry maple muffin (center), chocolate apricot scone (top left), earl grey orange scone (top right), almond croissant (bottom left) and cinnamon schnecke (bottom right) Service - fast friendly and efficient. You order at the counter and take a numbered tag to your choice of seat. Everyone was friendly and lovely to interact with Ambiance - This is my personal style of restaurant. Very open. Doesn't feel like you're in a city at all. Quite while still bustling. Just lovely all around. TL;DR - I will be back. Everything is delicious. Go here. Be happy.

Beautiful breakfast spot located in Durham; must sit outside to really enjoy the ambiance! Lots of flowers and trees, and plenty of tables and overhead heaters for when it's cold out. Usually a longggg line, and can be challenging to find parking, but worth it. The line moves pretty fast! The 3 page brunch menu (served until 3 pm), includes several different flavors of coffees, cocktails, teas and wine, pastries, egg items (scrambled eggs, omelettes, croissant sandwiches, pancakes), small plates (overnight oats, granola, bread), large plates (kippered salmon, pork schnitzel), salads, sandwiches, and daily specials from the bake shop! Lots of vegan, vegetarian, and wheat free options on the menu. AND homemade healthy dog treats available at the window. The sweet potato scone was scrumptious- chunks of sweet potato, fluffy (but crisp out edges) bread, topped with cinnamon. The smashed avocado Benedict- smashed avocado, poached eggs, tomato confit, and smoked paprika hollandaise, on their homemade brioche bread, was absolutely delicious. The sauce and the bread made the entire sandwich. Note: they have a special Thanksgiving menu, including tons of delicious baked goods (apple strudel, sourdough, apple bread, fruit tarts, cakes, bread & rolls, pastries.) Will definitely be back to this bakery & restaurant!

This is both a restaurant and a bakery that has what seemed to be largely outdoor seating. Of course it's unlikely to be terribly cold in North Carolina. I came for a baked goods rather than dining in, and walked out with numerous indulgent, pastries, and a loaf of bread that was sliced for me. The flavors were rich and contained enough bitterness and soreness to contrast the more indulgent aspects of most of my items. The entire spread disappeared at the hands of the people that I brought it for, which was not a small feat. I would like to come back for the restaurant, which had a lot more for special dietary needs that most German restaurants do

I haven't been here in years. I've been to the bakery, but not the restaurant in a while. They changed it up a bit since Covid, now you order outside at a window and sit where you want to either outside or indoors and they give you a number to display at your table for the order. The food is still as good as I remember, plus it's one of the only places around where you can get German cuisine. I know the Döner is now the most popular food in Germany. So I went with the classic lamb doner . It was very tasty and I would recommend it to anybody. Next time I might have to try the chicken or the falafel instead. The Swabian potato salad is not the classic German potato salad because it comes with cucumbers but it was still good. It helps that the sauce on the side was delicious and a little spicy. And you can't beat a good dark German beer.

    John P.

In the mood for German food so we went here for dinner. This is an interesting restaurant where you place your order at the window, find your seat either inside or out, and get your own silverware, napkins, etc. The food is very good especially the Schweineschnitzel, Spätzle, salads, bread basket and Brezel (pretzel). The Grill Bratwurst was ok but it probably would have been better with a bread bun rather that the brezel bun it comes with (fries were very good). We sat inside and were only one of the few tables occupied since everyone wanted to sit outside since it was a nice evening. Our food took a long time to come out one item at a time and a significant amount of time in-between them. We expected the pretzel, bread basket and salads to come out quickly and all at once, but they didn't. Once we got our main dishes we had to ask the sever about our salads they forgot. Overall, the service is not very good and what we expected. The flight beer flight is a good way to sample the beers and the Spring Soda mocktail very good. Unfortunately, the Bakery closed at 5pm and we didn't arrive until after 6pm since we were told by our daughter, who had eaten items from there before, says that in one of her favorite things about this Bakery & Restaurant. We had a ok dine-in experience and at least the food was delicious.

What I recommend: The homemade pastries Overall, this is a great breakfast and brunch spot, especially for the scenery. It's a beautiful place to sit and enjoy your morning, but be warned that on weekends it gets extremely packed. They don't take reservations and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so the line can easily stretch 20 to 30 people deep and parking can get hectic. The food is very aesthetic, reasonably priced, and decent overall, though I do think some dishes could use a bit more flavor. The ambience more than makes up for it, and the homemade pastries are always a nice treat after breakfast. Definitely a good spot for a relaxed morning brunch.

I love this place. I love the ambience, the food, the food selection, the bakery and the restaurant. I had the chicken sandwich. It was moist and yummy. I had the French fries. They were crispy, seasoned well and plentiful. You order at the counter and the food is delivered to you. I am in love with bakery because scones taste amazing. I bought 3 scones and a cookie. Yummy is an understatement. I want to know if your company ships to other states. So yummy. Here are my pictures. I recommend this establishment whole heartedly.

Been here for brunch. Do they actually wait the table during dinner rather than having us order at the register?

Yes, will have to wait to be seated

What's the largest reservation they'll take? Do they have a private room?

My company had our team dinner there. It was at least 20 people. They sat us upstairs in an open area. Not sure if they have a 'full private' room though. Might be worth a call seeking 'full' private

I am OBSESSED with their potato crisps and their simple cucumber salad. I get those every time we visit. They change the menu often enough to keep you interested in new things, but always have their staples available too. I'm a big fan of their Schnitzel and pirogies. My husband RAVES about their Smoked Brisket Burger. I would also argue that their Truffle Deviled Eggs are the best thing on the menu when they have them. They have great cocktails and a large beer selection. The only difficult thing about eating here is having limited space in my stomach because everything is seriously so good. Bonus: they have a dog friendly heated patio.

Parking was tight but doable in the lot. The space is charming inside and out; the shaded patio has a nice vibe, though foot traffic to the entrance passes by those tables. Ordering is walk-up, and food is delivered to the table. Menu is broad with clear gluten-free indicators (huge plus). Coffee was dark and delicious, and service throughout was genuinely warm, knowledgeable, and fast -- easily 5 stars for hospitality. Getting to-go boxes was effortless and we were offered refills often. Food was a mixed bag. My wife had the gluten-free smoked salmon toast with avocado. She wished the veggies and tomato were grilled; the GF bread itself was very good, but the greens/tomato ended up pushed aside. I had the smoked salmon Benedict. The salmon portion felt light, and the hollandaise leaned more toward mustard than citrus and was a bit thin. Breakfast potatoes and veggies were nicely cut and well-seasoned but undercooked; same for the bacon, which tasted more tough than crisp. (I reheated the potatoes/veg at home -- flavor was there once cooked through.) Prices felt reasonable, ingredients seemed thoughtfully sourced, and the team's earnestness shines. With a little tighter execution (fully cooked potatoes/veg, crisper bacon, brighter/thicker hollandaise, slightly more salmon, grilled tomatoes), this would be an easy 5. I'll definitely be back -- I gave it a 3.7 but rounded it up to 4 stars for the service, coffee, and GF-friendly menu options.

You can also add extras like chocolate chips or blueberries for a small up-charge; both of mine loved theirs. I ordered Huevos Rancheros Brunch, which was good. Crispy tostadas loaded with tender shredded steak, beans, lettuce, and cream, and ask for a fried egg cooked medium so the yolk spills out perfectly. It came with pico de gallo and jalapeños on the side (I skipped those, but if you like a kick, i'm sure they will add great flavor).
