Enjoyed a great dinner at Full Steam last night before catching a show across the street at Motorco. I've enjoyed their beer multiple times, but haven't previously been to the brewery. The interior is awesome, very industrial, I'm curious what the building was previously. The decor is fun and they have a great indoor "patio" space for gather at large tables, eating, drinking and apparently trivia night on Thursdays. The bartender that helped us was super friendly, and very knowledgeable about their beers. Their food menu is small, but offers some good options for sandwiches, burgers and causal bar food. I got the chicken sandwich with tots. You can pick between grilled or fried, I opted for grilled and it came out quickly. Dinner and the beers we all had were flavorful, I'd definitely visiting again if I go to another show. read more

First let me say that the parking situation around here is pretty dismal but it's not their fault at all. There is construction going on everywhere and we parked in a lot that said $3 but it was $3 for the first 30 minutes, $5 for an hour. (Just FYI, most street parking in Durham is $2.50/hour if it's run by the city.) Also, I don't think this location will be open much longer. They're going to move to the American Tobacco Campus so this review may be moot. My husband and I are partaking in the Bull City Beer Challange. Which is where you got to at least 12 of 23 participating breweries in Durham and you'll get a T-shirt, coozie, and pint glass. Since we also love fall, we took a Friday afternoon off and decided to visit 3 or 4 on the list. This was our first stop. Since we had never been here before, I wanted to get a flight. I probably shouldn't have done that LOL. I'm used to getting flights of 4 that have 3-4 oz pours. Fullsteam does five, 5 oz choices!!! Maybe not the best choice when we're going to be visiting multiple breweries in a day. There isn't a set price for the flight, it's different for each beer. Mine ended up being $16. I got the Coffee is for Closers (JUST like an iced coffee), ADSR (also coffee flavored), Hard Frost (a brandied persimmon ale - 12%!), Carver, and Southern Basil. They were all good and all very different. I think that the Hard Frost was my favorite but I didn't even finish since this is a marathon, not a sprint. HAHAHA The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable and the bar was actually pretty busy for a Friday afternoon before 5. Stopped by for some quick beers. I opted for their Hazy on tap. When I visited early August, it was very hot and humid out. There were only some fans on, and no AC was turned out (not sure if it is available). Not too busy for the afternoon. Parking is extremely difficult here. You may need to park a few blocks away. Mixed reviews about this place, some gripes of which aren't at the fault of Full Steam. I'll start with the positives. The venue is really nice, super chill with great vibes. It's also very spacious with two separate sections and lots of seating, one side is the bar with some seating and the other is an open almost garage like area with many long tables. Bartenders are also great, friendly and efficient. I'm clumsy and accidentally spilled one of my beers, and she kindly poured me a new one which was so sweet! I ordered a flight which is 5 5oz pours of any beers on the menu, prices vary. I paid about $16 for my 5 which I didn't think was too bad. I didn't care for the 6/19 or the Uncle Ricky's, but that's personal preference. The Southern Basil on the other hand was phenomenal! Yum! I'll definitely be back specifically for that one. Now, the not so positives, mainly just two. It was honestly so hot inside that it made it uncomfortable (for me, at least). Plenty other patrons seemed fine! The bar side was cooler, yet still hot. The "garage" side was swampy, which I know they realize as fans are set up, and the garage door was open so it definitely would be unbearable if not. I'm not sure if this is par for the course or just because of the time of year. I also bet during cooler months it's really pleasant! Secondly, totally not Full Steam's fault but unfortunately a huge factor...PARKING (or lack thereof). I'm not a local to Durham so I'm not used to this, though I recognize most probably are. There's a lot directly across the street and if you're lucky to find a spot, you'll spend between $8-$10 for 2 or more hours. The cost really isn't the problem, it's more the finding a place to park. There's so much construction in the area right now, too, that many lots or decks on the map are inaccessible. My friend that I planned to meet up with drove around for, no exaggeration, an hour in search of parking. We finally gave up and she picked me up and we went elsewhere. Summarily, I would go back here and recommend to others. I would simply be aware of these two main issues listed above and plan accordingly. I didn't get a chance to try their food this time, sadly, due to the parking conundrum, but I'd love to try it next time. read more

This place is a great meeting spot for a large group! I have gotten the vegan Reuben twice in the past few months- once with a side salad and once with fries and both were equally delicious. You order food at the bar and you get a buzzer to tell you when it's ready. The service is friendly and the food is quality! Great beverage selection, too. It's pretty cold there in the winter. And hot in the summer, which is my only complaint. I wish they would control the climate a little more. read more

During a recent conference in Durham, we did a local brewery tour. The stand out brewery for us was Full Steam Brewery. From the outset, we were impressed by the space. Huge, open, and welcoming, there is outdoor seating, covered open air seating, and air conditioned indoor seating. Something for everyone! We also felt welcomed by the LGBTQIA+ flag hanging out front. Thanks for making us feel included! The next best moment was how wonderfully friendly and helpful the bartender was. As a first timer, I had lots of questions and she helped with kindness and positivity. I always appreciate that! My husband and I both got beer flights and the beers were AMAZING! My husband got a flight of IPA's and absolutely loved them! Between the two of our flights I really enjoyed the Westea IPA, the Oops...We HS17701Ed Again, Brumley Forest, Todor Vapor, and Southern Basil. However my favorite was the classic Biscuit Wheat Beer made with local NC ingredients. It was so flavorful and delicious. Yum! We also shared the Queer Beer on tap from Mill Whistle Brewing and thought it was delightfully yummy and Pride festive! We also tried the food and LOVED it. My husband got the Piedmont Chicken sandwich and liked how uniquely flavorful it was. I got the blackened catfish sandwich and found it wonderfully delightful! Bursting with flavor, but not too spicy. And the bread was a perfect baguette. Both sandwiches came with southern seasoned fries and they were literally like drugs they were so deliciously addictive. I could've eaten a whole other basket, even after being full! Prices were excellent, the space was clean, and hours were ideal. If we are ever back in the area, Full Steam will be stop #1 on our list. We tried 7 other breweries and it was definitively our favorite. The most unique beer had a basil flavor which I had never had before. There are tons of tables inside and outside with an outdoor covered area as well. The Lowdown: I was impressed with the food and size of the building. The service and knowledge from the bartender, Jenelle was exceptional. Four stars because : I was a little disappointed in the beers that were available(although I'm not a beer drinker my friend is). Parking sucks and there was a smell of what resembles natural gas near the front entrance. Oh and yes, the front door is that big red thing under the sign (see photo) Fun fact: Triangles 3rd largest producer of beer in the triangle and they In Source most of their meat, cheese, grains. The worst part about my experience here was the parking and walking around all the construction happening in front and the natural gas-like smell near the front entrance just after you walk in. We just arrived in Durham, and were looking for a place to burn some time while waiting for friends. We found this gem and could not have been happier with our choice. This is a relaxed, family-friendly brewery with ample seating, and industrial fans for warm days. Great selection of beers, and although we did not eat, several people around us had what looked to be delicious appetizers and sandwiches. We enjoyed the Paycheck (Pilsner), Biscuit (wheat), and Oops... Again! (Pilsner/IPA blend). These three beers were fantastic. I've had Full Steam beer before via grocery stores & taprooms and their Rocket Science IPA has become one of my go-to IPA's, so I was pretty excited to go to the brewery in Durham. Very good sized brewery. Due to COVID, there was a path you go through to order and then to your seat (this is a good thing, as it was organized). Of course, they had plenty more options on draft so that was an excitement to try as well. The bartenders were very nice and didn't rush at all when selecting a beer. Our seat was in the main area and you can tell many events had (pre-COVID) been held there previously, which were probably very fun. The brewery itself you can see in the back through the glass, which is cool. The only bad thing was that we went during peak summer and their AC was not on, but rather open air. There are huge, multiple fans but only pushed around hot air. Aside from this, I still love their beer and would return to try more. I recommend. read more

There is ample seating with a ping pong table and beautiful decor. While we visited we had the pleasure of watching an artist work on a mural on one of the walls. I loved the soft focaccia bread they used for the patty melt (I'm also a sucker for caramelized onions on sandwiches). The fries are on the crispier side, which I enjoyed. I'm not the biggest beer fan, but I had to get the Girl Scout cookie flight because I've never seen this anywhere else! The cookies hit ofc; my favorite pairings were the Lemonade cookie with Road to Nowhere and the Peanut butter cookie with CIFC. Service was good- friendly and relatively speedy. Flavor was ok. - Herb-Parmesan oven fries were ok. The sour cream and onion dipping sauce made the dish. Ask for a second cup of dipping sauce. - Maple Mustard Edamame with grilled lemon sounded like a great appetizer but was too sweet and not salty enough Be sure to squeeze some lemon juice on the edamame as it adds some "pop". BEER As a disclaimer, I am a home brewer and a bit picky. I wasn't impressed by the beer. It was good but not great. - Full Stem cider/beer collaboration with Cider brewer was good. Dry apple balanced by the beer (I am not a fan of sweet cider). - Igor Cake Imperial Bakery Stout was good. Brewed with chocolate and cherries. - Bananas Froster has off-flavors and not good. This place was an amazing stop on our trip back to Charlotte. Great beer + great food = win in my book! We went in to grab som lunch and take a driving break, and were thoroughly impressed with their COVID procedures - easy walk in, order, walk out, spaced or tables, signage to say the tables were ready for a person, everyone was masked (besides for drinking) and lots of open ventilation. Definitely felt safe being in there, and everyone was following guidelines/respectful. We went with their session IPA...it was PERFECT for a hot day. Light and hoppy with a refreshing finish. I would order that over and over again. We also split a burger, which came with a side - we choose the cold cucumber soup, and got a side of fries. The burger was cooked perfectly, a solid, classic burger. The cold cucumber soup - I would drive up again just for that. It was refreshing, with just a hint of jalapeño spice! The fries were the good, hand cut, Boardwalk style that's the perfect accompaniment to their beer! 10/10 will certainly be back! read more

I had my favorite beer of 2020 at this brewery. I've been going on a sour kick, and they had a very funky sour with cocoa nibs and some other flavors. It was really excellent, as were the other beers I tried. As for the brewery itself, they've done a good job of adjusting to the COVID outbreak: masks, distance between tables, etc. I felt as though they were taking the disease seriously, which is a good thing. We've been here many times over the years but I wanted to give them a shout out for their post-quarantine experience. There's a staff person greeting you at the door and explaining the rules to you. Wear a mask when not seated, move in one direction, pick a table that has a "sanitized sign," and leave all your glasses and dishware on the table when you are done. Beertenders are behind plexiglass and the main room had tables far spaced out. That's a signal for them to sanitize your table and then put up a sign for the next person. We don't usually order food from them but enjoyed the catfish po boy we had on our last visit. Besides their regular beers on tap, they will have rotating seasonal beers. Again, special shout out to them for providing a space that is as safe as possible during the pandemic. read more

As far as breweries go, this place is fantastic! They've got a great selection of beers. I'm not usually a beer person but I'm obsessed with their Bananas Froster. The space itself is really nice - I like how big and open the main seating area is. Plenty of seating to choose from. One room is a bit darker and the main room is more well-lit. I like the variety. The vibe is super casual and they've got plenty of bar games and a ping pong table, plus darts in the back. Really great environment. The employees are friendly and service is pretty quick, even on a Friday night when it gets kind of busy. They also have some food options, and they're a bit expensive but they're a bit fancier than your standard bar food. (One bonus is they label which things are or can be made vegan.) One thing I really appreciate about this place is their restrooms. They're gender-inclusive. Instead of saying "men" and "women", they say "urinals and toilets" and "toilets" only. I really like this, and it's a huge plus in my book! read more

I'm normally not a fan of eating at breweries since the food is usually about the same. But I had lunch at Fullsteam recently and I was blown away by the food quality and uniqueness of the menu! I ordered the Carolina-dipped Chicken Sandwich, with a side of the grilled peach salad. It was delicious!! The coleslaw and homemade pickles gave the sandwich a great flavor. I usually get the normal side of fries, but I'm so glad I went for the salad which was sweet and savory in each bite. My husband got the pork sandwich and said it was excellent. Definitely recommend this place for a casual bite to eat! The only downside was that it was a bit pricey, and the cucumber salad was not worth the up charge.
