Adjacent to it is a place called the boot room which serves such a great and wonderful selection of food. Spacious & open air with decent seating and plenty of room for large crowds. Patio area in front of both businesses allows for outdoor dining and conversation over drinks. Not too pricey at all. Sampling of taps available as well. Bartenders are always nice, attentive and accommodating. Interestingly enough, they seem to have this strange fascination with Danny Devito. read more

Decent beer selection in draft from IPAs, stouts, pale ales, sours and ciders. I didn't peruse their can section. Looks like they also sell record vinyls? There's plenty of seating throughout the place and the restaurant that's connected to it. The day we went it was chilly outside but they had the A/C running in the front area. You could feel a draft and people kept their coats on so we moved to the back. If you sit in the back room, be prepared to be annoyed at the never ending, repetitive noise from the pinball machine as children play on it. read more

I agree with another recent customer that the service is absolutely terrible. (Interestingly, the service is great in the restaurant that adjoins the beer hall--the restaurant servers are terrifically nice and warm and helpful.) The servers in the Beer Study are rude, arrogant and antisocial. They glare at you as if they are daring you to even try talking to them--this last time, a woman server with the initial G gave such adversarial and unhelpful service from beginning to end that I will probably never return. This is so unusual for North Carolina, which is usually a state of very gracious and friendly service. This place needs a seriously new attitude and the manager needs to hire nicer people or lose their job. People spend their hard-earned money to go out and have just an hour of pleasure and peace. If you don't have any sympathy for people and your subliminal attitude and facial expressions are super-bitchy and cold, get out of hospitality. So this place was much larger than expected. A brewery, a bar, and a sandwich shop. A perfect trifecta! Didn't know about the sandwich shop until we got there. Plenty of parking available and plenty of food options in the area (that you're welcome to bring inside.) We had already eaten but will check it out next time. The vibe was very chill...it was a Thursday evening and we saw plenty of families there. The first time we ordered drinks, the bartender was a little pompous which was off putting. I mostly know what beer I like but don't be rude...educate me, don't condescend me...However after a little discussion, the bartender thawed and gave me some very good recommendations! I had one friend who is going to drink nothing but Guinness so it was easy for him to decide lol. My bestie wanted a cider but none of them were good tonight . My husband likes ipa, had 3, liked them all, but didn't have a favorite. I loved the Mexican Cake but the bartender turned me on to the Ego Death Vanilla...it was amazing! But be careful, it's also high octane! So much beer to choose from...the were literally 42 on tap. And a HUGE selection of canned and bottled beer to take home. We had a wonderful time. Absolutely love the vibe at Beer Study and they have so many options to choose from. Besides what's on tap they also have a store area with beer, cider, wine, mead, and more. Things have changed over the last two years. On tap beer menu often has many empty taps. Customer service is realllly suffering - friendly faces that have been there for years just aren't friendly anymore. Have to pull teeth for any sort of interaction except.. do you want to pay or start a tab? Don't bother asking for an opinion on the beers on tap. This was a cool and accidental find for us. It is located next to the Boot Room where you can get food. It is in a strip type mall with limited parking. There is indoor and outdoor seating. This place is fairly deep and has arcade games as well in the back. There is a large selection of beers... some of it theirs and others from NC. We tried several beers over the weekend at different places and this one was the one that had the ones we liked the best. They have an excellent amber lager called Lily(which unfortunately they do not bottle or can) and a lager called Dance in the Sun. We came back on the second day there just to have another beer! Decent place. Good bar foods, friends in my party like the salads. Good selection of beers, but no samples. I got a few decent ones, but I was here for my friends, not the beer selection. The outside tables are ok, but could be improved with a simple shape. In the afternoon, the sun is brutal for and hour or two. Tbh this is the best kept beer secret in the Triangle. Of all the local breweries I've tried from Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, Beer Study consistently produces the best IPAs. I should I clarify--Beer study is both a taproom, and it also has its own line of beers under the name Starpoint Brewing. If you like IPAs, you need to try them. The atmosphere here is great--super laid back and feels like a local hangout spot. They share space with the Boot Room if you need a bite to eat (I recommend them as well!). They do have a decent selection of beer, cider and wine to-go. My only complaint is I wish they had more single can selections! read more

This place has some good beer. I tried 4 beers and loved all of them. There Hefe is awesome. Prices are also pretty reasonable. They even have beer and wine to shop. This establishment is connected with another establishment where you can get some food and they have a bar too. Service was quick and good. I was on a work trip with some coworkers and we were looking for a space that would could get together as a team and think about our past, present, future, and drink some good beer. It was kind of a different experience I was looking for, as I wanted to get us all samples of many things so that we could talk about the beer. While they didn't have flights available that we could easily use, they were incredibly accommodating and gave us enough regular glasses to use to split up full pints on our own. This had the unexpected benefit of allowing people that didn't like a particular style to opt out of having more of something they didn't want. The space itself was large and comfortable. It wasn't too loud and we were able to have a great time and some deep conversation while trying every type of beer there. We'd certainly be back given the chance. read more

Finally had a chance to stop into Beer Study. It's quite a popular place, especially on a Friday evening. I do like that they open the door to the soccer bar next door, which help makes it easier to find a seat. There's also parking that wraps around the building. I love the variety of beer here. I do wish the font was bigger on the monitors, it can be quite hard to read and make a choice. The bartenders are okay, could be a bit friendlier in my opinion -- fix that and 5-star for sure! read more

It's in a very unassuming shopping center, but it has a great vibe inside and there's a ton of space and seats inside along with a few TVs for watching football or soccer. I saw a couple people working on computers, and the noise level seemed great for working or studying. We happened to come on New Year's Day and saw several people ordering Pedialite - I'm not sure if this is a regular thing or just a post-holiday special...either way solid move! Enter the new Beer Study in Durham! I stopped in during their opening week not knowing what to expect. It's a big space and still shaping out, large retail section and cooler cases to the left, tasting bar in back and seating/hang out area to the right. I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender a bit getting all the details on their opening. The beer list is about 20 beers deep but VERY reasonably priced with most brews at $5 on tap. And in back there's even more space at the Beer Study, a game room is under construction so there will be even more reasons to visit. Overall I was pretty impressed. The Beer Study in Durham has a lot of selection, doesn't over-charge and offers up a nice seating area. Definitely a step up from most bottle shops I've run into. I have been to Beer Study for a birthday party in the back arcade room, and then again to see Dex and the Halftones (an awesome, local jazz band). Both times were very fun! I like that they allow you to bring in your own food, and that they're dog friendly. The acoustics for the concert were surprisingly great- not so loud that you couldn't hear the people you were sitting with. I love how they have a self-serve tab for water on the wall so you don't have to bother the bar tender. There is plenty of parking, some of it is hidden behind the building. I would definitely recommend this spot for hanging out with friends on a low-key afternoon or evening. read more

Consistently solid experience, and coronavirus is no exception. Right now they're doing no seating inside, but they have tables out front and have tents in the back that you can reserve ahead of time at least on weekends. Staff are being good about wiping down tables when they clear out, and there are bottles of hand sanitizer at the tables to use. You can go inside to bottle shop or order drafts at the bar, and then can take that out to your table from there. Or, the tables out front have a QR code on them that you can scan with your phone camera to open up an ordering site right from your phone. Check out the list, place your order, and pay right from your phone. They'll bring your beer out to you from there. Re: NO SAMPLE POLICY. Buy only a full glass at a time, love-it-or-hate-it! I was invited to Beer Study by friends for a few drinks. I did not recognize 90% of beers and due to their no sample policy was asked to decide based on a very short (bad?) description what i wanted and pay full price for every order. I did get several beers ($70 worth) and about 1/2 of them I would not pick again. In other words, I drank 1/2 of the beers while I was pissed off (together with other friends who expereinced the same and also spent a similar amount. I offered to pay for a samples, but no that can't be done. I don't know how this makes sense. Charge me for my 'study' but don't make me buy beer that I will hate it all the way to the bottom! Will go back? Yes. But please make an option to pay for samples, if you can't afford good customer service. read more

I checked out the new Beer Study venue and I was a big fan. It is located across the street from Nanataco/Q-shack, and next door to the Boot. It is a sleek looking space, and I should note dog friendly as the bartender's adorable pug was running around. They had a great selection of beers on tap, many of them were of course from Star Hill who will be running a brewery out of this location. They also operate as a bottle shop and had a selection of bottles there, not a huge selection, but still will do you fine if you are around and want to pick up something to take home. They don't make food themselves, but they had menus from the The Boot around that you could order from. Our group just called in an order to Nanataco and picked it up and were able to enjoy our pints with some delicious chips and guac. They are setting up an arcade room in the back but seems like that is still coming together, but it will be an additional attraction. I liked this place a lot. For me because I live in the downtown area, I don't know how often I will frequent this place as it is a bit removed from the rest of the Durham nightlife. However if I am eating dinner at one of the assortment of restaurants around it, it will be a great place to go for a beer before/after. Also I'm sure the people who live in this neighborhood will be happy to have a fantastic neighborhood bar. read more

Happened upon this place very randomly while eating across the street at Nana Tacos and am so happy to have found this place! This place is super dog friendly which makes them a gem in my book. They have great local beers, arcade in the back and board games to borrow and play. Such a fun place to hang out and have a chill night. There were so many children/toddlers running around (and I literally mean running and climbing on things) lt felt like I was at a child's entertainment place, not a bar. A beer establishment for adults. After a really unpleasant experience at another local beer establishment that's become a playground, I was very pleased with my experience at Beer Study. There's a very grown-up and sophisticated atmosphere at Beer Study compared to other local breweries. It's a smaller place that most, so it's kind of cozy. It's a combination of brewery and bottle shop so there's lots of stuff on tap but also a large selection of brews that you can take home. They also have game room in the back with some classic video games and pinball machines which is always a plus. Their game room is also a space used to entertain private parties. They also have live music on the weekend sometimes, which is a nice touch. They also have TV's for all the sports games people enjoy watching. I'm not even much of a brewery person, but this place has a vibe I can get into. It's also located close to a handful of really good restraunts to eat at since they don't serve food themselves.
