    Excellent bottle selection
    Kathleen D.

I'm totally torn on how to rate Beer Study. If I was rating based on beer selection alone, they'd get an easy five. But that's not how this website generally works. It's the whole experience, and when I factor in staff interaction and their general business practices, it brings the rating down a bit. I'll start with the 'meh' parts of my visit: - Plastic cups. I know some spots switch to plastic on the weekends just to keep up with the crowds, and I'd understand that. But in addition to being plastic, they also bubbled up (aka: they were not clean). So I wonder how they were being stored? I personally appreciate proper glassware when possible. Plus it cuts down on waste significantly. - The one hipster bartender couldn't have been more apathetic (although I guess this statement was redundant). He straight-up ignored me both times I walked up to order drafts. The other wasn't too nice to my friend, but he was personable and really friendly with me when I excitedly grabbed a Fonta Flora bottle (my first!) and cashed out. I wish he had been my initial impression of the staff. - It just felt like the whole shop needed a good scrub down (especially the floor). It's a chill local hang out with a grungy feel, but that doesn't mean they can't maintain a basic level of cleanliness. That said, their beer selection is absolutely fantastic and amazingly well curated. Tons of bottles and cans -- both refrigerated and room temp -- available at affordable prices. They also have seating inside and outdoors, with a TON of board games available to play. I saw people grabbing Al's Burgers and settling in for relaxing Saturday nights out and about. If I find myself in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to stop in to stock up on North Carolina beers. But would I hang out inside again for any real length of time? Probably not. But I do understand why others would enjoy the spot. I think that leaves me with an average 3-star review, right?

Beer Study cork fee $1.50/12oz & $2/22oz. Hop on Top for $6.99. Currently at State of Beer for $5.99 with no additional corking fee.

Beer Study is the JAM although I must highly recommend you hit it in off hours. I love it's location, a nice walk to anything fun in either Carrboro OR Chapel Hill. They have a great selection of beers on tap, bottles beverages to open on the spot [if it's not in the cooler, apparently they can chill it and have it ready to drink within 5 minutes--$1.50 cork fee applies!], great wine selection and cigars. With a handful of community tables inside, bar seating and outside patio seating, it can get crowded on a weekend evening, so just be prepared. If you try something you really enjoy, take it home in one of their customized crowlers. They've also got a handful of "bar activities", including some oldie video games, Southpark pinball and an shooter arcade. Honestly, I can't really describe what it is about Beer Study, but it's just really inviting; although the bartender was anything but average, the space gives a very chill vibe and makes you want to stick around for another. They also have a great list of sour beers in addition to their other taps. This is a great spot for a group [on off hours] or a one-on-one with a beer loving friend.

Beer Study is an interesting and awesome place to grab beers with friends. On this visit I ordered the Devils Backbone Kilt Flasher, a smooth drinking Scottish ale, while Boyfriend went with the lower gravity Mystery Tiny Tim. The majority of beers they had on tap were a higher ABV so I played it safe and went with a half pour. They also have a decent bottle selection. Service was great. Plus, they were playing Star Wars.

    Store front with no customers.

Just another sad empty highly expensive bottle shop with mean bartenders. I had an experience here a few and didn't like what happened. You will spend significant bucks here.

    Post-work Saturday.

If you like your bottle shop to also feature draft beers served in plastic cups, a N64 system, and viewings of "Guardians of the Galaxy", well then my friend I do believe Beer Study may be a dream come true for you! As others have mentioned, Beer Study is a bottle shop first and foremost and while they may not have as wide a selection as some other local shops, they do offer a very high quality selection. Plus they carry a good assortment of NC beers (including Wicked Weed which I tend to have difficulty finding...though that may be user error on my part) which is always a good thing in my book. There's a small bar in the back of the shop with something like 18 rotating drafts that are clearly well thought out and of a wide variety including a cider option. The prices are decent for a 12oz or 16oz pour, though not amazing (most run from $5 to $8 it seems). Maybe it's just me, but when I shell out $8 for a pint, I kind of expect it to be in an actual glass rather than a plastic cup. For a $5 pint, however, you can pour it in a used coffee can and I'm happy. You can also buy bottles in the shop (beer or wine) and enjoy your bottled beverage within the four walls of Beer Study, but apparently they charge "corking" and "bottle popping" fees. The draft list has been stellar in my experience here, so I haven't had to resort to a bottle so I can't speak to all that. For entertainment, they've got a television with a N64 hooked up, tons of board games, card games, and foosball among other options. There are tables for your sitting pleasure at the front of the store as well as outside tables for when the weather is nice. All in all, Beer Study is a cool, laid back spot in a nice location sandwiched between Franklin Street and West Rosemary Street so it's easy enough to get to but far away enough from the crowds. The pint prices can be a little steepish and seating can be tough to come by on a busy afternoon or evening, but all in all the beer selection, friendly enough bartenders, and casual vibe make up for any blemishes I can see here!

The place is pretty tucked away and didn't know it existed until I was invited. First thoughts were uh this is a bit shady walking up stairs and the building itself was not super well kept (not their fault). The bathroom looks so outdated and wasn't super comfortable that the bathroom is a shared one (two stalls, a urinal and it's just open to all) so wouldn't feel comfortable drinking alcohol and then possibly being alone in a bathroom where men are peeing right next to me. That's just my opinion and comfort. Regardless the place was cute- the bar had a lot of options for tap, they had MEAD! Extremely exciting as I LOVE Starrlight mead. The music was kinda all over the place from like 70s music and then the next was like a Fern Gully song -would just stick to one genre. The employees were also pretty nice (they ?Meredith? helped me over the phone as well). Notes: DO NOT PARK IN THE GRAVEL PARKING LOT- it's not theirs They seem to automatically tip, not sure how much, I wasn't given a receipt and didn't have the price of my drink so I can't deduct from my charge. They seem to have a pretty big card charge as well so maybe cash is better? They have a ton of events so check when you want to go during the week! I've added a photo.

Also the bathroom was disgusting and I threw all my clothes in the wash. It's near the college which I guess explains the sounds coming out of the speakers. Actually they were more like a series of constant screams accompanied by the unplugging and re-plugging in of instruments. Major cons: *limited parking *pee * about 10 tables * no one asked me about board games or cared. Pro: that brief period when the music stopped. Thankfully there were plenty of edgy hairstyles Do places like this care about money or is it just a front for the magic the gathering store?

If you don't trust me, check…read morethe other 20 one-star reviews describing the poor and discriminatory service provided by Chris Pope. Chris is a racist and demeaning bartender. I have been going to this establishment for several years, but I am now forced to avoid it on Thursdays (when Chris Pope works) because he is unreasonably rude and insulting. Even his own co-bartender begged him to, "not be an a--hole tonight," before the two of them fought in the back. It is incredibly disappointing and hurtful, and, frankly, it raises serious concerns about the bar's negligent--or, based on the copious negative reviews, reckless--retention of this employee. Zog's, an otherwise fine establishment, opens itself up to needless liability due to Chris' inability to perform his role without aggressive and embarrassing theatrics. Several other bartenders have called him out on his unacceptable service, including Daniel, but they all refuse to report it because they are afraid of the consequences. (If Daniel were the sole bartender, Zog's would likely have nothing except five-star reviews.) No one wants to work with him, and no one wants to attend this bar. Numbers are dwindling, and other patrons universally acknowledge that they, too, avoid Zog's solely because of Chris. I am keen on taking this further and will not relinquish my efforts until Chris Pope is let go. Zog's is a great establishment that is being ruined by his presence. For those disappointed by this result, Four Corners is a great bar just up the street! I would suggest going there, where the bartenders are courteous. I genuinely hope management takes these concerns seriously, because Zog's could be a great spot-just not on Thursdays.
