Walked in randomly on a Wednesday evening to an empty bar. Based on a friends suggestion we sat down and asked for Hazy IPA reccos. Thanks to an incredibly knowledgeable but super chill bartender we spent the next two hours drinking, chatting and making a new friend. This location is moving about a mile away so we saw the new landlord and heard the story of the move. They are losing a great business. Highly recommend going to check this place out when they get settled in their new place (November 20). read more

I was looking for a place to meet up with grad school friends to study hard - and after, hardly study! Beer study was the perfect place for us to go - no one would judge you if you came to chat with friends, play games, or study. They have plenty of tables and unique beers to keep you satisfied for whatever you're looking for. The only drawback was that I had trouble connecting to wifi. I had to try ~5 times to connect, and it eventually worked without any other interruptions. Beer Study does a good job of serving a spot Chapel Hill severely lacks: a chill bar for locals with a solid selection of local beers you can't find everywhere else. I only wish they more often served Burial on tap. They are North Carolina's god tier brewery in my opinion. Beer Study will occasionally (rarely in my experience) have Burial beers, but I'd love to see multiple varieties with more regularity like they do with other local breweries. I'm totally torn on how to rate Beer Study. If I was rating based on beer selection alone, they'd get an easy five. But that's not how this website generally works. It's the whole experience, and when I factor in staff interaction and their general business practices, it brings the rating down a bit. I'll start with the 'meh' parts of my visit: - Plastic cups. I know some spots switch to plastic on the weekends just to keep up with the crowds, and I'd understand that. But in addition to being plastic, they also bubbled up (aka: they were not clean). So I wonder how they were being stored? I personally appreciate proper glassware when possible. Plus it cuts down on waste significantly. - The one hipster bartender couldn't have been more apathetic (although I guess this statement was redundant). He straight-up ignored me both times I walked up to order drafts. The other wasn't too nice to my friend, but he was personable and really friendly with me when I excitedly grabbed a Fonta Flora bottle (my first!) and cashed out. I wish he had been my initial impression of the staff. - It just felt like the whole shop needed a good scrub down (especially the floor). It's a chill local hang out with a grungy feel, but that doesn't mean they can't maintain a basic level of cleanliness. That said, their beer selection is absolutely fantastic and amazingly well curated. Tons of bottles and cans -- both refrigerated and room temp -- available at affordable prices. They also have seating inside and outdoors, with a TON of board games available to play. I saw people grabbing Al's Burgers and settling in for relaxing Saturday nights out and about. If I find myself in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to stop in to stock up on North Carolina beers. But would I hang out inside again for any real length of time? Probably not. But I do understand why others would enjoy the spot. I think that leaves me with an average 3-star review, right? read more

I had some frustration a few years back with these guys and how they provided service, but something changed - not sure if it was them or me. Everyone has a "good beer selection" nowadays but these guys definitely stand out. It's not just the same 6 NC breweries - not that they're bad! But everyone has Foothils and Fullsteam and Wicked Weed. These guys do a better job of *also* having national brands, plus really great imports - I'm not sure what they have besides Belgian, because every time I'm here I go with whatever amazing Belgian beer they have *on draft* - not Stella or Leffe but the really top-notch ones, like Sasion DuPont, one of the top of the style; or Westmalle, an actual trappist brewery who make a great Tripel. read more

Beer Study is the JAM although I must highly recommend you hit it in off hours. I love it's location, a nice walk to anything fun in either Carrboro OR Chapel Hill. They have a great selection of beers on tap, bottles beverages to open on the spot [if it's not in the cooler, apparently they can chill it and have it ready to drink within 5 minutes--$1.50 cork fee applies!], great wine selection and cigars. With a handful of community tables inside, bar seating and outside patio seating, it can get crowded on a weekend evening, so just be prepared. If you try something you really enjoy, take it home in one of their customized crowlers. They've also got a handful of "bar activities", including some oldie video games, Southpark pinball and an shooter arcade. Honestly, I can't really describe what it is about Beer Study, but it's just really inviting; although the bartender was anything but average, the space gives a very chill vibe and makes you want to stick around for another. Beer Study is an interesting and awesome place to grab beers with friends. On this visit I ordered the Devils Backbone Kilt Flasher, a smooth drinking Scottish ale, while Boyfriend went with the lower gravity Mystery Tiny Tim. The majority of beers they had on tap were a higher ABV so I played it safe and went with a half pour. They also have a decent bottle selection. Service was great. They also have a bunch of good board games which makes for a good time, and there's outdoor seating when the weather is warm. They also have a ton of stuff not on tap but I haven't bought explored that selection much. Lots to explore here. read more

I've been here a few times with friends and just went yesterday with my mom and step-dad who are visiting from CA. WE had such a great time. The bartender/owner was super friendly and knowledgeable. (And not bad on the eyes at all ) my step-dad really liked the beers he tried. I had some lavendar, lemon thing then a strawberry/rhubarb cider. Both we're good, especially the cider. I highly recommend stopping here and just enjoying the cool atmosphere. read more

If you like your bottle shop to also feature draft beers served in plastic cups, a N64 system, and viewings of "Guardians of the Galaxy", well then my friend I do believe Beer Study may be a dream come true for you! As others have mentioned, Beer Study is a bottle shop first and foremost and while they may not have as wide a selection as some other local shops, they do offer a very high quality selection. Plus they carry a good assortment of NC beers (including Wicked Weed which I tend to have difficulty finding...though that may be user error on my part) which is always a good thing in my book. There's a small bar in the back of the shop with something like 18 rotating drafts that are clearly well thought out and of a wide variety including a cider option. The prices are decent for a 12oz or 16oz pour, though not amazing (most run from $5 to $8 it seems). Maybe it's just me, but when I shell out $8 for a pint, I kind of expect it to be in an actual glass rather than a plastic cup. For a $5 pint, however, you can pour it in a used coffee can and I'm happy. You can also buy bottles in the shop (beer or wine) and enjoy your bottled beverage within the four walls of Beer Study, but apparently they charge "corking" and "bottle popping" fees. The draft list has been stellar in my experience here, so I haven't had to resort to a bottle so I can't speak to all that. For entertainment, they've got a television with a N64 hooked up, tons of board games, card games, and foosball among other options. There are tables for your sitting pleasure at the front of the store as well as outside tables for when the weather is nice. All in all, Beer Study is a cool, laid back spot in a nice location sandwiched between Franklin Street and West Rosemary Street so it's easy enough to get to but far away enough from the crowds. The pint prices can be a little steepish and seating can be tough to come by on a busy afternoon or evening, but all in all the beer selection, friendly enough bartenders, and casual vibe make up for any blemishes I can see here! read more

I really enjoy both locations of Beer Study, but this one is more convenient for me. There's usually a good mix of beers on draft, and they frequently change (which is both a pro and a con to me). There's also bottles and cans available for consumption there. Everything is served in plastic cups at this location, though, which I think could be changed to improve the experience. The shelves of beer are fun to explore. I recognize a lot of breweries from around the area and some from further away. I've never bought any to take with me, but it seems like a good bottle shop. I love the outdoor area here with all of the picnic tables. It's the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon or evening. I do prefer the interior of the other location, since this one is not as updated. The workers are nice and helpful with recommendations. I love that I can bring takeout from Al's burgers over. It's a good place to start or end the night. Overall, Beer Study is one of my favorite casual spots in Chapel Hill. read more

If you like a variety of beers and love to try different ones, this is a great place to stop by. It's a cute little place with shelves of beers and tons of beers on tap. Parking can be a little tricky but you can park on the street, a lot, or a garage. Sometimes it's free on the weekends depending on where you park. Once parked, you go inside and you can see a great number of beers that you can take home or drink there. When I stopped by, there was a Burial takeover and it was amazing. If you get the munchies, there's food around that you can eat outside of the Beer Study. This makes me come back since I always get a little hungry while drinking beer. Highly recommend. read more

But this place is pretty damn cool and if you're a beer geek or looking to buy and taste some great beer you should most definitely hit up Beer Study! They've got taps from breweries not available in the triangle. yep the owner personally drives all the way to Charlotte and Asheville to pick up the kegs. That alone should tell you about his dedication to quality craft beer and how cool and unique Beer Study is. They've got seating and a bar to hang out at while you're enjoying one of the drafts or one of the numerous bottles for sale. Yep, you can pop a bottle in the store and hang out and enjoy it. Plus, they've got a shuffleboard table!! Great beer selection with lots of interesting & reasonably priced beers on tap! Located in CH on the edge of Carrboro, Beer Study is a lil beer gem that just popped up! The co-owners know their beer and are very nice and friendly. If you don't like what they have on tap, you can purchase something from the store and drink it there! There's a foosball table & some other game. Seating is a bit limited (the bar & a few tables where people kinda hog with jackets while they play foosball), but there's a fair amount of standing space. The standing space is a bit awkward because you want to stand near the wall, but the walls are shelves of beer. So you have shuffle around while people look at the beer. Overall, I tried two different beers that I haven't seen on tap anywhere else in Durham/CH and can't wait to go back! read more

Semi-regulars who purchased a $14 4-pack yesterday. First beer was flat, so we attempted to exchange the remaining 3 for store credit today. They refused and suggested we contact the brewery. As much as I have to go to Chapel Hill, I will now add Beer Study to the route. This "oh... there it is" place is unassuming until you look at the sweet selection. I thought I was on the up and up on local beers. Boy was I mistaken! If there's anything you want to know about beer, these are the guys to ask. Who knew Virginia made a pale ale in a can??? When I started looking at the walls, I expected to see slight mark ups on prices (since they're new and small and all). They kept it real. No BS at Beer Study. I only hope that the students at the college can appreciate that. In my quest to provide out of town friends with local, quality ales, I don't have to worry about going to all the breweries and then 3-4 beer shops. Beers from miles around under 1 roof. Whoa! This place is pretty damn cool. If a beer store and a tap room got it on and had a baby - POW you've got Beer Study! The owner(s)/ proprietor(s) have a good rep around town for loving beer and taking it seriously. At least two other places told me to come here. Apparently they go around to different breweries that don't yet have distributers and purchase kegs from them directly. Basically, you can get some great beer without having to travel. The taps seem to focus on North Carolina, but the bottled/canned selection is from all over the place. Everything from NODA Jam Session to DuClaw Sweet Baby Jesus. Great place to chill with other beer lovers and catch up with friends. Only a couple of tables which fill up fast on a Friday or Saturday. You won't want to leave - seriously, good, beer. read more

There are taps, tables, shuffleboard, and foosball, along with bar seating so you can just hang out and have a nice drink on a random evening. You can also buy beer here for home consumption. You want a 6 pack of that good local brew? You can get it here. You want a single? You can get one of those too! Beer Study is the spot you go to when you're with good buddies in search of new beers. It's got a home-y feel to it, with the same regulars showing up everyday. And when I say home, I mean home - they've got tons of board and video games from classic Hungry Hungry Hippos to Starfox on N64 (Sega Genesis and original Nintendo also present and accounted for)! A large selection of brews fill the walls and fridges here, all with a $1 corking fee if you'd like to enjoy them right on site. They of course have a running list of 5-8 beers on tap from all over and the bartenders are extremely knowledgeable about everything they've got behind the bar. Whether it's a nice day out and you're looking to chill on the picnic benches outside, or it's a cold winter day and you want to warm yourself with a stout while playing video games that remind you of your childhood, Beer Study is the spot to bring your good ol buddies and make that chill af afternoon or evening happen. Then call over to Al's Burger Shack to place an order for your dinner. Don't worry, it's going to be a bit so go ahead and get yourself another beer. There's such a large selection at Beer Study you'll always be able to try something new. Chill, relax, go pick up your food from Al's and come back for another cold one at Beer Study. Seriously, it can't get any better. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. I'd say people in late twenties and thirties (not many undergrads here). The only downside is if you come on a popular night you're going to have a problem finding a seat. Oh and their staff has always been friendly and helpful. With that large of a beer selection they really take into account your preferences and help you to pick something out that you'd like. read more

This up-and-coming beer store is a perfect addition to the Chapel Hill. It has a solid selection of local and domestic craft beers while offering up some of the best regional drafts in the area (currently 5 taps). The seats in the front are a nice place to hang out, share a bottle with a friend (they offer on-premise bottle service) and work/study on your computer (free wireless). Beer Study is the go-to spot for me and my friends for some drinks and a chill time. We come here often for these main reasons: extensive beer selection, cheap prices, incredibly relaxed environment, and fun games (hello N64)! Probably about 10 different beers on tap and they change out at least 1 or 2 beers daily for a varied selection every day. Bartenders are very friendly and easy-going. Place is pet - friendly and they even have a dog bowl for water outside! PLENTY of beer to buy as well. Foosball table, corn hole, N64 with 4 controllers, and a large selection of board games including Cards Against Humanity. In the back by the bathroom there's also a small collection of brew books if you're interested in reading. The only issue is the place is small and there aren't that many tables or seats, so on a busy weekend night, so you may have to stand around. But that's hardly a deterrent. read more

Walk inside the Beer Study and your eyes can feast on quite a few treasures. Immediately to your right: a FULLY FUNCTIONAL N64 WITH FOUR CONTROLLERS, equipped with such classics as Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Starfox, Mario Party, and much more. Keep moving and you'll find a rustic shuffleboard table on your left, and a ton of craft beer selections straight ahead. As you peruse the aisles for North Carolina classic brews and obscure wines, you can walk straight to the back for a well-equipped bar with at least 10 beers on tap. Though this may not be the classiest of bars, the price will keep you coming back (generally 4-5 bucks per pint). Near the back of the store awaits a foosball table, just in case the aforementioned attractions didn't cut it for you. Simply put, this place is epic, pay it a visit! Why give this place 4 stars out of 5? Two solid reasons: 1) They do not have Super Smash Bros 64, aka the best game ever made 2) They do not allow you to drink 6-packs on premises, and charge a 'corking fee' even for single beers. read more
