Keep moving and you'll find a rustic shuffleboard table on your left, and a ton of craft beer selections straight ahead. As you peruse the aisles for North Carolina classic brews and obscure wines, you can walk straight to the back for a well-equipped bar with at least 10 beers on tap. Though this may not be the classiest of bars, the price will keep you coming back (generally 4-5 bucks per pint). Near the back of the store awaits a foosball table, just in case the aforementioned attractions didn't cut it for you. Simply put, this place is epic, pay it a visit! Of bars in Chapel Hill, Beer Study has one of the better beer selections of the more off the beaten path breweries. If you are a child of the 90s you will certainly feel a touch of nostalgia as you enjoy your libation with a round of Mario Kart 64. The chairs are strangely reminiscent to the classroom furniture from elementary school. The beer selection on tap is variable, but I usually try to go with a novel IPA and I have not yet been disappointed. The bartenders I have met have been very knowledgeable about their selection and can usually make a good recommendation if you are at a loss. If nothing on tap tickles your fancy they have a device that will rapidly chill whatever bottle from their large selection that you care to imbibe in. If it suits you as it has me, you can enjoy a cigar with your beverage at picnic tables out front - though you may want to bring your own cigar as their selection has been somewhat less than desirable the last several times I have been in. read more

This place has me psyched. I've only gone once so far, but from that one experience I can say I dig it. It's a shop with a bar. All the possible beer you could buy to take home, and beers on draught to sit and enjoy while hanging at a table with chairs that look like they're straight out of an elementary school. In a great way. We came in around 11pm on a Friday night, after Bowbarr turned down the lights and turned up the music. Beer Study had a great sized and interested crowd: not quite the usual Carrboro hipster but not quite the usual Chapel Hill college student. It was really bright in there, which took me aback at first but after a while it was comforting. Better than the dark bar scene (I WANT TO SEE MY FRIENDS! I'M OLD!). It looks like they have a TV and video games up front, which a lot of people were crowded around. We got our beers (I had a black lager) and sat at a hidden table near the bathrooms, which by the way did not smell bad and were pretty damn clean. I really dig the decor in here. As an educator and father, I must say that I was strongly disappointed with the Beer Study. I thought, and quickly learned otherwise, that the establishment would cater to a more refined and scholarly clientele, having the word "study" in its name. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a motley crowd of semi-kempt 30-somethings (bartender included) raucously discussing 80's and 90's pop culture schlock and completely ignoring my request for a beer with humanely-sourced, free-range yeast. Needless to say, I was immediately put off. After finally achieving a grunting acknowledgement from the bartender and receiving my beer in a pint glass (would have preferred a stemmed tulip), my son Daschle and I took our seats. It was at this time that our experience went from bad to worse. Upon sitting down, I hear the stereo system flare with what I can only imagine is Texas barbeque-themed hip hop music. Daschle and I were traumatized by lyrics such as "if you grill with charcoal that's a red dot on your head" among other violent fuel-related lines. The last straw came when the local clientele started "dancing." I had to avert my and my son's eyes from witnessing a large man with holes in his black tee shirt flailing about the bar as if having a walking seizure. Located (very) conveniently beside Al's (go there for burgers then here for beer- I've done it, and it's WORTH), Beer Study looks like one of those locations you can miss easily. I spent a good 6 months walking by this place before I ever decided to try it (which I regret). They've got a NICE list of beers on tap, and a huge selection of bottled and canned beers available. One of my friends got a beer on tap, then turned around and bought a canned beer right after. The bartender is really nice and very personable, so he can help give you suggestions on which beer would be best for you. They have some indoor seating, but most of the seating is outside on picnic tables. They also have board games and the like available to play while you sit and enjoy your beer. When I walked into Beer Study I was greeted by a loud, profanity laced tirade. No worries, it was just Trailer Park Boys playing on the TV. At the bar, there was a fella about 3 stories tall, wearing the basketball shorts of a much shorter man. We exchanged pleasantries mostly through grunts and shoulder shrugs and I was rewarded with a tasty beverage. He was accompanied by another employee who was nice enough, but when I stared deep into his eyes, it was clear that life had broken his soul. This was most likely explained by the fact that he was wearing a Mets shirt. I perused the shelves, amazed at the great selection for such a small shop. There isn't much space wasted with beers you can buy at the grocery store. The shop has everything you would expect to find, along with some obscure gems. Many of the bombers and six packs are available both cold and room temp. Some douche bag made a negative comment regarding the corking fee (a small charge for opening any bottle/can onsite designed to keep cheap assholes from drinking beer in a bar at takehome price), so I tapped him in the ball sack and told him to ice up. I guess it was shift change as I was checking out, bc a dude who looked like Gandolf with Benjamin Button disease came in with a bad ass walking stick. He immediately upgraded the music selection, so I decided to hang around for one more beer. The 18 beers on tap are just enough to cover all the bases but not so much as to overwhelm. The struggle for parking is real (for lazy sons of bitches like myself who don't like walking a block or two). But, the beer is so good you should probably uber there anyway. All in all Beer Study gets 5 stars. Great bottle and draft selection, and an eclectic group of employees who make the experience all the more enjoyable. read more

I've only been here once but I was impressed. The staff was friendly, we were served quickly, and they do provide samples of beers before you decide to buy (which is great for people like me that are a little picky about beer). They have tons of options. The atmosphere is very laid back and liberal. They have a sign that says "no bigots allowed" with pictures of Former Gov. Pat McCrory, Donald Trump, a few others and a list of known bigoted senators. The place is dog friendly as well. My biggest complaint is that the seating is very limited inside, and when it's 25-30 degrees outside and windy, you're pretty much out of luck. Additionally, parking is a nightmare. Overall, I was still very impressed with this place and will definitely be back. read more

This place is awesome! It's part beer store (in the sense of a specialty store with a good selection), part beer shop (in the sense of a coffee shop that serves beer), and part bar. We came for a drink on a Wednesday night, and to pick up a four-pack of my favorite hard-to-find beer. The mix of different atmospheres is really cool. Some people come to shop--and it's a pleasant shopping experience because it's not so packed that it would take you 30 minutes to find what you're looking for (cough cough Sam's Quik Shop). And the proprietors really know their stuff and what beers they carry so they're super helpful. Plus, it's also a bar, so as you browse, you can buy a pint (they had maybe 10 taps? including Steel String, which is relatively new so I hadn't had it before). The vibe is very relaxed, mix between trendy-coffe shop-hipster. There was some sort of board game group going on while we were there, and other people typing away on their laptops. We sat at a table and enjoyed our pints (it was an IPA special night) and really enjoyed it! Only sad thing is that it closes at 10 and it's somewhat out of the way. Other than that, I definitely recommend checking it out for the really friendly staff, good beer selection, and unique concept. read more

This place is the cat's jammers if you like good beer without having to deal with overpriced drafts, snotty bartenders, and not so great pub food. JD keeps an excellent selection on tap to please either the most discerning or those new to craft beer. If there isn't anything on tap, there are plenty of bottles, some refrigerated that should suit you. He keeps it real and his attitude rubs off on the other patrons. If you want a good honest bar with good honest beer this is the place. Best part for me is the prices. He carries some rare beers that you would pick up for 7 dollars a twelve ounce pour at some of the local brewpubs (cough cough milltown, federal) for about five bucks. Better yet he usually offers a half pour of his beers for 3-3.50 on a 5 dollar full pour...that way you can taste all the awesome beers he has on tap. His bottle and six pack prices are every bit as competitive as your big retailers (total wine, etc.) - very impressive for an operation of this size. I was honestly of two minds on writing this review. It's such a great place, relatively new, and I'd like to keep the secret from getting out. First walking in we spied a Nintendo 64 in the corner so we were won over immediately. But after a visit to the bar and a couple games of Mario cart we were ready to settle in for the afternoon. The atmosphere would be best described as cozy and I was pleased to find they had a quite a few beers for sale that I couldn't find elsewhere. There were quite a few food establishments near by and they were more than happy to allow you bring outside food on the premises. Bottle selection also geared towards NC beers. Event Horizon on tap was a big surprise when I visited for the first time. Staff was very enthusiastic about beer, fun to talk to. It's a small place and easy to chit chat with the crew here. Awesome vibe, table shuffleboard in the middle of the room. Take a stay-cation at Beer Study because they offer a solid draft list full of N.C. breweries that aren't featured at more run-of-the-mill bars around town.
