Kind of like Cafeteria food. They gave you coins to pay for it, and the turn out was always so robust. It was a really nice way to get the community together and also try dishes that you probably hadn't had in a while, or even ever. I remember those events, being the talk of the town. My friends would mark on their calendars that it was a "no-cook night" and to meet them there. Fun times. I've been meaning to sign up for their owners program, that is on my to-do list. By donating a certain amount to the co-op, you become a founding member and help support the co-op. It's a sweet way to be involved and invest in the Durham community. I also love the parking situation at the co-op, you are never fighting for a place to park, and the parking spots are not razor thin. At the front of the store, there is a grassy area with picnic benches, and I find it so inviting. People are having lunch dates there, sharing snacks, and just enjoying the weather. I will say though, the co-op is one of those places that I have to remember to go to. Now that I'm writing out all that I love about it, I will continue to keep it on my mind.

The chicken was pan seared perfectly, the vinaigrette was perfectly tangy and the bleu cheese was especially excellent. My friend's chicken sandwich has SO MUCH chicken salad on it. Impressive. There was so many neat items to see in the place. The murals were great, there were some cute retail spaces, a coffee bar up front, a bar downstairs, and ice cream outside! Not such a good place to sit down and enjoy it…read more We SO want to love Vino, but after living in Pittsboro for 8 years now, we are struggling to really, really feel at home there. The staff is almost always cold and indifferent. Maybe it's us, although we're kind of quiet. We greet, take a seat, order from the menu, and try not to ask too many questions and just get a glass of wine or buy a couple of bottles to take home. But we have not had a truly welcoming person yet, and we have visited the place innumerable times in all of our years here, first in their upstairs, smaller space and now in the new, street-facing store. Yesterday we encountered a new cold shoulder when we went in for a glass of wine and some "nibbles" at they call them. There is a menu with charcuterie board offerings at the bar, right next to the wine-by-the-glass menu. So, we figured, we'd order a couple of bites from that menu along with our glass of wine. The bartender stared blankly at us and showed us the shelf in the corner where all the offerings are stored in their original packaging, and asked us to help ourselves from the shelf. We knew about the items on the shelf, but we thought those were to take home. What was the purpose of the menu at the bar then, if you can't order from it, like you do the wine?! She said, "you can take what you need from the shelf, unless you want me to run around the store and bring them to you." I thought that was rude. Some of the things we wanted needed some sort of silverware (like cheese, canned things, or olives), and she begrudgingly said "sure, I'll give you plates and forks for that." We have been to wineries and wine shops before, but I have never seen anyone anywhere putting a menu in front of you at the bar and expecting you to go fetch from the shelf on your own. If this is their business model that is very much OK, but this was not very clear, and it felt like we were in the wrong asking for something we should instead fetch ourselves. We do find some wines in there to take home that we can't find anywhere else, and we will continue to buy wine there and support them as a local business. We know it's hard to keep a business afloat in these times, and we want to help where we can. But we would also love to see some effort on their part to actually welcome people in. If Sam's is the popular tattooed front man of everybody's favorite, gruff-voiced punk rock band, the Bottle Shop is that tattooed guy's older cousin - he still bears the tattoos of younger years, and grins when he hears the music, but honestly, sometimes the scene kids and late hours just get to be too much. He'd much rather sit around in a quieter setting these days, talking with and meeting new friends while he introduces them to this really amazing new Belgian seasonal he discovered. Oh, and if you're wine person, he undoubtedly has an excellent recommendation, too. Now, the fellow who runs things here doesn't have tattoos. No visible ones, anyway. But, he's wise in the ways of fermented wonder, friendly, patient, and very open to engaging you directly to make recommendations or give you information about anything you want to know about. My husband really liked chatting with the last owner, who knew a lot about wine. He had not been since the new owner took over. I convinced him to go for a tasting, and I'm so sorry I dragged him in there on his weekend time. We were the only people tasting at the bar. Despite this the managers showed zero interest in us. It was very awkward. They asked no questions, not even how long we'd been going there. Management actively avoided us. No one wanted to talk beyond shelling out basic wine info on what they were trying to sell at the tasting. When we stepped away from the counter to look around after the tasting, they suddenly gathered with one another behind the counter to talk among themselves, leaving me somewhat confused and left to peruse the shelves alone (we were the only ones there looking at wine too) instead of taking any opportunity to approach us, get to know us, and retain local clients and entice us to want come in more often. All 4 seats were empty at the counter around them. It was a weekend night. Had I felt more hospitality, we might have bought a nice bottle of wine and sat down to talk. Instead we left. My husband just shrugged (he likes Wine Authorities anyhow) but I actually felt somewhat shocked, in all honesty. It's hard to believe they're trying to run a hospitality business. That experience was anything but fun. In fact it was stressful and a disappointing waste of time. If they want to justify their higher prices over other stores, or encourage people to drink on premises, they need much better management. Preferably people who like people. We had every intention of supporting this local business, but won't be returning anytime soon.

There are a few bottles that are more expensive, like $20, but I haven't splurged on those bottles yet. The staff is super friendly and helpful. If you don't know a lot about wine, fear not, they have information about the wine with descriptions, tasting notes and food pairings. If you're still not sure, the staff have their recommendations and can steer you in the right direction if you're looking for something specific or open to exploring.
