I came with a Meetup group on a Saturday afternoon, so it was quite crowded. The staff was quite accommodating, letting me sample 4 different beers before ordering two drafts. The Churro was quite good, the cinnamon flavor really stood out. I also liked the Cooler Nights IPA, not overly bitter but it had a nice citrusy dank flavor. Dogs are welcome and they have board games as well. And even though it's near downtown Durham, parking is still free. read more

An excellent brewery with many different options - and excellent customer service! I'm not the most knowledgeable about beer, but even on a busy trivia night, the bartender was extremely helpful in walking through different options and providing great recommendations. They do recurring trivia nights every Wednesday for free and without any strict rules about team size. It's done with phone/projector and extremely well organized and smoothly run. The questions themselves lean heavily on pop culture - the last round is always a fun challenge with identifying songs that fit a particular theme. This place is amazing. Kid friendly and a welcoming atmosphere, from the moment we walked in, it was obvious this splace was made for families to enjoy too. If you want to go to a brewery where parents can relax and kids can burn off some energy, this is place to go! Grabbed some beers here recently and had a good time. The venue is awesome, with a huge amount of outdoor and indoor space. I was impressed that they had ping pong tables, and the beer I tried was pretty good. I initially was thinking about ordering a flight, but it wasn't an advertised option on the menu, or if it was, I guess I missed it :) I'd say the worst part of the experience was the service. The bartender did an OK job but was generally unfriendly and had "I don't want to be here" vibes. Not bad enough to never come back or anything, but definitely a sour note in the experience. Overall, though, I liked Hi-Wire. There were tons of kids running around during the afternoon hours, so it was super loud inside. Went here on an early Friday early afternoon and it was not busy at all. The bartender was very knowledgeable and helpful...the menu on the bar was detailed and gave a lot of information as well. I got the Pumpkin Spice Stout (actually, I had two!) and they were delicious! I thought $8 was a little pricey for a 10 oz pour but it was a lunch date with my husband and it was very tasty. He had a fruity IPA that he enjoyed as well. It was a gorgeous fall day so we were able to sit outside for an hour or so and enjoy each other's company. There were only a few other people there but I can imagine that this place gets packed. We checked this place out for the Bull City Beer Challenge and I'm so glad that we did! Ps. Made the mistake of Coming on a Saturday -- It's basically a kids amusement park that serves beer. If you want to watch screaming kids run around unattended while the adults drink copious amounts of alcohol this is the place for you! Woohoo! The staff seems miserable and I can't say I blame them! It's located in a big warehouse that they open the rollup doors and let in the fresh air, has a ton of seating, games, great merch, a pizza place next door that will deliver to your table, AND delicious beer!! We are in town visiting family and I can see why they love to come to this brewery. The staff was super friendly and welcoming and we all loved the beer that we tried. We ordered a pizza from Cugino Forno next door and they brought it right to our table. Since they have such a big location they have a ton of games and space. We sat close to the pingpong tables and there was always someone playing a game and having fun. If we lived in this area we would be at this brewery all the time. We were staying the night in the area and wanted to grab something to eat before we headed to the hotel for the night. We did a quick search and saw there was a Hi-Wire brewing in the area, which happens to brew my current favorite IPA. We also saw that Cugino Forno was next door and would deliver to the tables in the brewery, a win-win. Hi-Wire Brewing and Cugino Forno are next door to each other inside one of buildings formerly used by the Golden Belt Manufacturing Company. These buildings have a lot of history for the area. In the late 1800's, the Golden Belt Manufacturing Co. originated in a portion of the Bull Durham Tobacco Factory as an operation to produce the cloth bags in which the tobacco was sold. Now this area is a fully renovated Golden Belt Campus. We arrived at about 4:30 pm on a rainy Friday afternoon in April. Sitting outside wasn't an option and while it was already busy we were able to find a place to sit. We did notice several large tables were reserved. There are also quite a few activities, such as ping pong, bocce ball and cornhole. This is a great idea for small to large groups of people gathering to enjoy good beer. I went up to the counter to order a Double High-Pitch IPA and the servers were friendly and helpful. When I returned to the table we talked about how we didn't realize that Hi-Wire had locations outside of Asheville but we were wrong. Their website shows they are not only outside of Asheville, they are outside of North Carolina as well. We looked at their swag and really liked a few of their shirt options but the material was just too thin for my tastes, I like a heavier cotton shirt. We are new to the area and learned about some holiday events happening at Hi-Wire so we popped in to their Durham location. It was our first visit and we fell in love with this spacious beer den and it's wonderful vibe. I already knew about their great brews, as I have visited their Asheville location, but this location surprised me in a great way. They have a spacious, but not in an overwhelming way, brew hall with lots of seating, table tennis and other games. There are also TVs for those that wish to keep up on Sunday Football and the Soccer games. Next door they have Cugino Forno for those that would like some yummy brick oven pizza delivered to their table. Hi-Wire Durham is dog friendly and people friendly. I loved seeing parents with little ones, others on date, and friends and families having a laugh and cold one or two. I also some some pretty heated matches of table tennis. It's all very inviting. The folks behind the bar really take care of you, are super friendly, and the IPA that I ordered was perfect for my taste. I've visited Hi-Wire a few times with a large group of friends. This is one of the nicer breweries I've been to. It's has a lot of seating to accommodate both large and small groups, very dog friendly, and has both outdoor and indoor seating with AC if you're looking to escape the heat. I like the variety of drinks they offer. From wine, IPAs, ciders, etc. they're bound to have something that will interest you. I've had the mountain water and pink lemonade. Both were very light beers that I enjoyed! I do wish they had more food options in the area. They have a decent pizza shop that's separate from the brewery. You can order at the pizza shop and they'll bring you your pizza to the brewery which is nice. Although if you're looking for more options aside from pizza, there really isn't much. Overall, this is a great brewery and I will definitely be back! I'd recommend it to anyone looking to host a large group. read more

We did a work event here, with trivia and tokens for drinks. I thought this place was a great local flavor joint with a lot going for it. The bathrooms were clean, and there was plenty of seating. I don't know how it usually works but we all went up to the bar and ordered drinks there, but maybe they do table service. I was surprised at trivia that phones weren't banned and you actually filled out your answers on a google form. This seems ripe for cheating, but I guess Durham is the kind of place where we trust no one is searching the answers. The trivia host didn't have a ton of personality, but we did move through EIGHT rounds of trivia which is also unusual! I feel like our local trivia does somewhere around 5. My secret tinfoil hat conspiracy lol is that this is to keep you at the brewery drinking! Eight rounds! They don't serve food, but you can order pizza and have it delivered from next door (I believe) or carry out the pizza into the brewery which is what we did. Ping pong tables on point! I saw at least one dog. There was plentiful parking lot parking. No complaints! read more

We enjoyed our visit to Hi-Wire Brewing in Durham. This is an Asheville-based brewery and taproom with, at the time of writing this review, four locations in North Carolina (two in Asheville, one in Durham, one in Wilmington) and locations in Tennessee (Knoxville) and Kentucky (Louisville, new). This Durham location of Hi-Wire Brewing opened on November 17, 2018. You can read the press release on Brewbound here: https://www.brewbound.com/news/hi-wire-brewing-opens-durham-tap-room/. A few quick statistics from Hi-Wire's release: 1. The taproom is 10,522 square feet with an outdoor patio. 2. There are 24 taps. 3. The taproom can accommodate nearly 400 people. We visited on a Saturday around 3:40pm and the place was quite busy, but not uncomfortably slammed and our waits for food and drink were reasonable. For beer, there was one line that fed to 3-4 registers, so the wait was not bad at all. Our group of 10 was able to find a table immediately upon arrival. The space is large, communal, and dog-friendly. We saw a lot of dogs. Two dogs from separate parties got into a fight. Inside, people were playing ping-pong. There is a beautiful, colorful mural on the wall opposite the main entrance. Food and beverage menus were available via QR code at each table. Paper menus were available at the bar. Food is prepared and served by J. Lights Market & Cafe, the food vendor on-site, not Hi-Wire (apparently, Hi-Wire just does beer only). My wife got one of the beers on tap, the Sour Smoother Series - Orange Creamsicle ($8 for 16 oz draft) and I had an A&W Root Beer ($2, 160 calories, lots of sugar). As someone who doesn't really drink, I have to say I thought my wife's Creamsicle was quite delicious. Of the Creamsicle, she said that it was not as sour as the typical sour beer. The name made her think it might be too sweet, but it wasn't sweet at all. She thought it was good. She also tried Hi-Wire's Pink Lemonade Session Sour Ale ($6 for 16 oz draft). She didn't like it. She said it had a funky fruitiness to it. One of our buddies we were with didn't like the Pink Lemonade either. He was expecting it to be a sweeter beer. Here's how Hi-Wire described these two particular beers on their website (https://hiwirebrewing.com/durham/): ' Orange Creamsicle Sour Smoothie Sour - Fruited 5.5% ABV - 20 IBU "Orange Creamsicle Sour Smoothie is brewed with 100 lbs per barrel of tangerines plus orange peel, vanilla, and lactose. This orange and cream-colored delight is super tart yet balanced by sweet vanilla accompanied by electric citrus aroma sweet via orange peel. ⁣*Contains Lactose" ' Pink Lemonade Session Sour Ale Sour - Fruited 4.2% ABV - 5 IBU "This incredibly crushable and refreshing fruited sour beer was brewed with some of our favorite summer ingredients. Raspberry fruit sweetness is balanced with just the right amount of lemony zip from lemon peel and nostalgic candied-lemon aromas from lemongrass." We ordered food too. I liked the laid-back and convivial atmosphere at Hi-Wire Durham. It did get quite loud at times and it was difficult to listen and speak to others sitting directly across from me, but that's bars, breweries, and taprooms in general. The sound really echoed and reverberated inside the taproom. Hi-Wire Durham is located inside a "historic 320,000-square-foot mill that once housed textile and tobacco facilities, and [was] the only remaining 1900s-era conversion opportunity of its kind in the area" (https://hiwirebrewing.com/hi-wire-brewing-durham/). The "campus" and immediate surrounding neighborhood is known as Golden Belt, a former industrial area. I used Waze to navigate here and it led us through what appeared to be a rough, low-income neighborhood immediately north of the property. This is all just southeast of downtown Durham and City Center. Parking was tight when we arrived, but I was able to find a spot in front of Strata Solar, right next to Hi-Wire. Came here for a Yelp event and got two complimentary drinks! A pink lemonade and bed of nails. Both were really tasty!! The fun atmosphere and large tables make for a shwae vibe. I finally had a chance to stop into Hi-Wire Brewery and it was worth it. There are a lot of parking but quite narrow so be careful when navigating through the lot. The selection of drinks was definitely the selling point. The prices weren't bad either. You should be able to find something that you like. I only wished there were a better description of each of the drinks. The space is huge and enough space for everything. There were a section closed off for a painting class but still left plenty of seats for everyone else. For a Wednesday night, the place was full which was quite surprising. When this location opened about three years ago, I didn't know if Durham needed yet another brewpub, albeit this one with a huge interior and also lots of patio space. I have to admit, Hi-Wire has kind of grown on me, especially now that there are two eateries next door: J Lights and Cugino Forno. It's still a massive space and gets very crowded, so not the place to go if you're looking for a more quiet night. It looks like you can reserve tables for celebrations, and there are dogs everywhere. I've had several of their beers now and most have been decent if not outstanding. There is also a space for live music outdoors, which is kind of cool on certain evenings. While this isn't necessarily my favorite local brewpub, it definitely looks like its found its niche. read more

Everything I wanted it to be! Hi-Wire is great. A very different atmosphere than the Asheville location, and personally more to my taste. Environment: there is outdoor seating and a huge area of indoor seating, and the indoor area stayed cool despite near 100 degree weather. Even with trivia and a packed house, the noise wasn't overbearing and you can have a conversation without screaming. It was slightly difficult to hear the trivia questions but they have the questions online and on a screen, and I would rather it be slightly hard to hear than overbearing! The indoor area is bright and spacious, and there are some games around the area as well, like shuffleboard. Service: 5 stars. Friendly and quick. Even being in a 20+ person line, I had my beer within 5 minutes. They had plenty of bartenders at the bar, and my bartender didn't get frustrated when I wanted to taste a beer, either. Drinks: excellent. They have beer for every type of beer lover. I had the mountain water, which was a great light, refreshing beer. I also had the King Cake which was a delightful stout with hints of pecan and coffee. Food: there are several food options around Hi-Wire that will deliver the food right to your table. There is a pizzeria, a cafe, and an ice cream shop. Great atmosphere, great service, great beer. Couldn't ask for more. Oh! While I'm not a huge beer person, I can definitely appreciate a good brewery and Hi-Wire is a favorite among my family and friends. It's spacious with a ton of seating, games and activities inside and outside to keep everyone entertained. They have a variety of beers and alcoholic slushies for the adventurous. It's family and dog friendly as well and I love that the location is right next to a pizza and ice cream shop.
