I had seen this restaurant on IG and really wanted to try it. I grabbed my husband yesterday (we had just done a lot of yard work and he really wasn't up for an adventure from Cary but agreed). On the way over he looked up the reviews and was concerned because there were comments about parking, too spicy, too small and service. I said let's see for ourselves. Parking- yes there are only 5 spaces directly in front. There are also 150 spaces DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET . Parking not a problem. Yes, an intimate setting but seats quite a few inside and a nice area outside with a large fan and shade umbrellas. They also take reservations. Service style is more like a high end restaurant. Not in your face but there to attend to your needs. This isn't a fast food noodle joint. Kitchen is small and in full view. They cook to order so again, have some patience for fresh food. FOOD - as for spicy, I am a Thai hot kinda girl and my husband is more of a level 1-3. We ordered the pork bun and the chili crunch was on the side (they make their own) and it was wonderful. Chili crunch is about a 3-4 on spicy level and my husband was perfectly fine with it. I poured it on. Easily shared by 2. We ordered the chicken spring roll and it was very good! Nice flavor and the sauce was wonderful (I added more chili crunch ). They come as 2 and are sizable (probably could share with 4). We also tried the new potato/wax bean salad and it had a lovely flavor profile but a little heavy. That is enough for 2-3 and is quite good and unusual. Not spicy (didn't add chili crunch but mind you, when eating American potato salad I add a lot of Texas Pete - I know I have a problem ) For our meals (we're getting full) we had the Soy-Tonkotsu Ramen and Wok Summer Veggie Belt Noodles. Rose's is a lovely noodle and pastry place in downtown Durham that I've been excited to try. The restaurant itself is in a cute lot with picnic table outdoor seating and very limited parking. The inside is also small with an open kitchen and some counter seats to watch the action. There's a separate counter for ordering dessert and pastries. While the dining area was very cute and hip, I found their food extremely disappointing. I got the belt noodles (which they're famous for), and I couldn't finish my plate. I usually love wide noodles and the flavor of Chinese vinegar, but their dish was incredibly acrid and bitter. The summer rolls were also disappointing. I thought the cayenne pepper on the outside was a little nontraditional, but it didn't really add to the dish as it just makes you cough and sneeze. Based on Rose's Soy Tonkotsu Ramen (best ramen I've had in the state), Housemade Belt Noodles, Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Macarons, I have to give Rose's five stars. Not everything we had here was great, but each of those particular items was outstanding. I like and recommend this place. Rose's is located in the Brightleaf neighborhood of northwest downtown Durham. At the time of writing this review, you can park for free directly in front of the restaurant in the spots marked "Fencers Club Reserved" because the fencing business has permanently closed. You can also park for free in the spacious Brightleaf Square parking lot across N Gregson St and, a little further away, in the lot at the corner of S Gregson and W Main. Rose's originally opened in 2013 as "Rose's Meat Market & Sweet Shop." During our visit in 2022, the south-facing exterior and our takeout box of sweets had the Meat Market & Sweet Shop logo, which features an old meat scale. I noticed this was in contrast to the "Rose's Noodles, Dumpings & Sweets" logo on the outside signage and menus, which features a bowl of noodles. According to the restaurant's website, "in summer 2017, Rose's made a full transformation of their space from meat market to an East Asian-inspired eatery." Rose's has a small space with an open kitchen, dining room, and pastry shop all in a single room. Seating is limited. I counted six seats at the bar and maybe 25 or so seats lining the storefront windows. All bar-height. The interior was snug and cozy. It had a bit of an industrial feel to it. The atmosphere was casual and hip. Since seating is limited and this place is popular, you should make a reservation through Rose's website at https://rosesdurham.com/. Our party of four had a Friday 6:30pm reservation. The dining room was at or near capacity for the duration of our visit with a few open seats at the bar. I liked the restaurant's simple menu. When we visited, the menu had six appetizers ($3.30-13.00 each), salads ($10 each or 2 for $15), sandwiches ($12.00-15.50 each), and bowls ($13-17 each, except for the Crispy Soft Shell Crab at $38). The drink menu had interesting selections, not just run-of-the-mill offerings, including beer, wine, coffee, and tea. The bottle of rose we got, listed below, wasn't on the menu. I forget the price, but bottles on the menu were priced at $37-49 each. I recommend them. Five plump dumplings were served to an order and they were rich and flavorful. The crushed nuts on top added an extra crunch. I love pickled food and was looking forward to trying Rose's Pickle Plate. It wasn't bad, but the veggies could've used more pickling, in my opinion. The veggies included cauliflower, cabbage, and squash. I was also looking forward to trying the Katsu Sando, but it wasn't all that I was hoping for. The unique sweet flavor of the milkbread threw me off. And I would've preferred a bigger pork cutlet and perhaps less cabbage. This one wasn't a homerun. What were homeruns, though, were the aforementioned Ramen, Belt Noodles, Ice Cream Sandwiches, and Macarons. Everything about the ramen was terrific including its appetizing noodles (fantastic consistency), perfectly soft-boiled egg, thick, succulent slices of pork belly, and rich, complex broth. Simply put, Rose's ramen is legit. The Belt Noodles were packed with flavor. The wide noodles had phenomenal texture and the pork belly meat was mouthwateringly good. The Ice Cream Sandwiches are a must. My favorite was the Brown Sugar Cookie Dough, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the flavors. Rose's makes their own ice cream. The Macarons were expertly-executed as well. Very sweet, top quality, and ideal texture. The Pistachio Candied Orange Sugar Cookies were quite delectable too. Fresh, sugary, and aromatic. There was a 4.0% "Happy Workplace" surcharge that I was happy to pay in order to help provide the employees with health insurance (and maybe other benefits). The flavours are actually quite simple, which is refreshing. Everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel out there with flavour, but usually it's the simple things that make me want to come back. It's definitely chaotic inside. This isn't a place you want to go if you're not okay being crammed. Hopefully they actually take people's names down if there's going to be a line and wait time. Instead of asking Uhhhh who was next? Who was here first? Is it you, you and you? There were big parties being seated where part of them had to stand. The ratio of how many people you're trying to cram to get seated to people working was not very good. I feel like it's better to have a wait (yeah unfortunately it's cold) than being crammed and panicked in the kitchen with multiple unhappy tables/people. I wish I saw some of the reviews about the disorganization earlier but I was too excited to try their food. The food is definitely not traditional Asian food. Their homemade chili oil was pretty good. I enjoyed the belt/wide noodle texture. But the taste is not for me. My friend and I came on a weekday for a quick lunch. The parking was very limited and I kept checking to see if my car got towed - not sure if I parked in the right place. I ordered the soy tonkatsu ramen and a Mochi chocolate roll for dessert. The ramen broth was very flavorful, and the pork belly was delicious! I devoured the whole thing! The Mochi cake is supposedly not always available so I'm happy I got to try it - I love Mochi flour desserts so this cake didn't disappoint. However, I was a little confused when I saw a 4% happy workplace tax on the receipt. I would've appreciated a bit of an explanation or a heads up to expect this. The steamed bun was huge and tasty; it was almost too big for an appetizer, but I managed to eat it all. ;-) Spouse had a cake that looked like a bundt cake but tasted mochi-like ("that was good" he said, looking at the photo). However the service was slow - which would have been ok, but it was super crowded and cold. AND the lights are so strong and industrial that it wasn't a great atmosphere to wait in. BUTTT I will say the chili oil in the belt noodle dishes is brutal! My boyfriend and I went to try both belt noodle dishes and he loves spicy foods but this was something different. It is small and cozy inside, so expect to be seated close to your neighbors, but it's not an issue and they also seem to do quite a bit of takeout. We ordered the Hot and Sour Sweet Potato noodles which had great flavor, but I do wish I would have been aware of the amount of Szechuan pepper used because it has a weird, mouth-numbing effect that made it hard for me to get through (rookie mistake on my part). Was visiting a friend in Raleigh area and she took me to this place....and it was a unique experience! Rose's is a small, eclectic restaurant that offers an interesting mix of Asian fusion dishes, from rice bowls and pho to Chinese noodles and Japanese ramen, plus a surprising selection of French-inspired pastries. I had the spicy pork flat belt noodles, which are housemade - they were flavorful with just the right amount of heat, and the chocolate galette was a rich, delicious finish as dessert. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so it's not the best choice for larger groups, however they do have some outdoor tables in the parking lot. This is a pretty good place if you're looking for Asian fusion. It's kinda disguised as a cafe and have both indoor and outdoor seating. They have sandwiches, salads, and appetizers but I think they're known for their noodles. I got the house made belt noodles with ground pork, sesame paste, broccolini, sichuan peppercorn, and peanuts. If you love spicy, this is for you. The sauce is all on the bottom so you'll need to mix it but after you do, it's super flavorful and numbing, with a lot of spices. Definitely needed a couple glasses of water! I'm so glad I finally got to try Rose's! I have been hearing friends rave about it (especially the desserts). The restaurant had a small, local feel with friendly staff and free parking. The menu is a bit intimidating with unique ingredients and flavor combinations, however, I seriously doubt anything on the menu is bad. They have a fairly small menu that appears to rotate some seasonally (so you know the ingredients are fresh!). I got the roast pork sandwich which was incredible. The flavor combo with the ginger egg salad was perfect! The food did take quite a while to come out, especially considering how small the restaurant is. Afterwards, we had to try their famous desserts, including a passion fruit macaron and key lime tres leches cake. The macaron was so authentic and flavorful without being overly sweet. World class noodles, friendly service and indoor/outdoor options. We were first time visitors to Durham and absolutely delighted to find this gem of a restaurant! It's still on the mind weeks later so I had to do a review. Some Favs: Summer tomato & corn salad. Imagine the best tomatoes you've EVER had in your life paired with super crispy crunchy corn and a perfectly light sauce. Bright, fresh, we fought over the last tomato. The salad menu changes with the seasons but I suspect the other months are just as creative and delicious. Belt noodle bowl: We got the vegetable version and this dish was perfect. I don't call dishes perfect very often but their noodle bowls deserve it. I order Xian/belt style noodles a lot, their version with veggies is a very welcome iteration. The noodle texture/sauce was super crave-able and could go toe-to-toe with some of my normal haunts back home. The desserts are always fantastic, the katsu sando is a must order, and the salads are always creative and fresh. The hand pulled noodles are decent but often very salty; it's also worth noting that the sensation caused by the Sichuan pepper can be bizarre if you aren't prepared for it. Now, unfortunately where Rose's loses major points is with the service. If it was once, fine. Twice, okay. But 3+ visits where the service has been awful makes me think it's a theme. I heard about this place via a friend and decided to order take out one night for dinner. I was going to order online but ended up calling the restaurant instead since online ordering resulted in an extra processing fee. Ordering and picking up the food was pretty seamless, and they also have outdoor dining available (which was pretty packed when we went). Now onto the three items that my parents and I ordered... Katsu Sando - This was the best dish out of the three but it still didn't blow me away like I was expecting given the rave reviews on Yelp. The milkbread was delicious and I really enjoyed the sauce as well, but parts of the chicken katsu were a bit tough unfortunately. Green Garlic Ramen - Rose's has a rotating menu for their "entrees" (which includes both the ramen and the belt noodles), and the green garlic ramen was the ramen option that day. I have definitely had much better ramen in terms of both the broth and the pork itself. Similar to the chicken katsu, the pork was also pretty tough which made it difficult for us to eat and enjoy. Additionally, the broth was simply not the best in my opinion... House Made Belt Noodles - While I quite enjoyed the texture of these belt noodles, this dish was WAY overpriced for the amount of food you get. I could count on my two hands the number of noodles we were given, and it barely filled half of the take out bowl. Due to the lack of noodles, the sauce was way too overpowering in terms of spiciness; had they added 50% more noodles to the mix, the noodle to sauce ratio would be far better. In fact, we actually cooked up some noodles of our own to add to the sauce. Overall, I probably won't visit Rose's again unless I go to try their sweets. read more

I was recently at the Museum of Life + Science and Rose's is the perfect takeout spot to grab dinner on the way home. I've been wanting to try Rose's for a while now and my first experience did not disappoint. Ordering online is easy and then they have a table set up outside their front door where an employee heads out to ask your name for your pickup order. They do want everyone to order online or by calling before they arrive. They had a small outdoor seating area in the parking lot if you wanted to stay there to eat. I'm super COVID conscious and this spot looked very safe and low key on a Sunday evening. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen and my husband ordered the Katsu sandwich. I'm not usually a sandwich person but that Katsu sandwich was so freaking good. Like, super delicious. The ramen was spot on and the pork belly wasn't too fatty, but man that sandwich. Another star of the show was definitely their pork bun. Highly recommend adding one of those to your order. I also appreciated that they had kids options, I love my child but he doesn't need $17 ramen. I ordered him some noodles and he ended up eating most of my noodles anyways, he loved the Tonkotsu broth. On to the desserts! We ordered the soy tonkatsu ramen & Belt noodles that had chicken and asparagus. It took about 30 minutes for our food to come out which was a little surprising considering they had no more than 20 items total on their menu and thought the noodle soups would be brought out pretty fast. The ramen was $22 and probably the most expensive bowl of ramen we've had in the Raleigh/durham area and sadly we have had better ramen elsewhere for a way cheaper price. However, we were pretty impressed with the belt noodles. They were thick and the broth was spicy and flavorful. Although not sure if it was worth $19. We also got some desserts, including a creme brulee macaron, strawberry & cream handprint and an upside down cake. They were all delicious and a great way to end the dinner. read more

I always come here for 1:1 catch-ups with friends and have also come for the occasional birthday dinner. This beautiful restaurant offers a fantastic atmosphere, creative and delicious cuisine, and friendly and attentive service. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal and dessert here. I had the pork belly ramen and blueberry buttermilk upside down cake. The aroma when we walked in made me even hungrier. They currently only offer outdoor seating but it is shaded and out of the heat. Parking is very limited so we used a parking lot across the street and hoped for the best. The food menu is limited and no modifications can be made but the dessert menu is quite extensive. I would visit again for the same meal or to try something different (either dumplings or another type of ramen when they offer it). read more

When in Durham, I always swing by Rose's for dessert. They make a good, quality dessert. I love the Creme Brûlée cake and the Salted Caramel Bread Pudding. They are the perfect balance of sweet. With the honey pieces on top, the cake is two sweets in one. However, in going to Rose's (which some would describe as cozy, which is honestly a nice way to put "hot as hell and cramped inside"), I know there will always be a trade off, and that trade off consists of basic manners. I know I'm going to get something tasty, but I also know it's going to be served to me (after being ignored for a bit) by someone who looks like they'd rather be getting work done at the office of Orin Scrivello, DDS than interact with me. So, I get a treat, and they get a decent tip and the hope that I never, never come back. read more

Very crowed on Saturday night. Indoor sitting area is small and smokey due to being next too the opened kitchen. But it's a lively vibe. This is American take on Asian cuisine from ramen (Japan), to dumpling and buns (China). I think they taste very good. I wish the belt noodles was spicier and accompanied with some pickles to tame down the creaminess. I liked the ramen and dumplings. Everything is a bit saltier for us, but washing it down with beer is not bad at all. And lastly, their dessert is must-ordered. read more

Second time here. Locally owned restaurant in a cute area of Durham. There is a small parking lot for the restaurant. I'm a big fan of ramen and we got the miso ramen here. The noodles were great with a nice chewy texture but the broth was salty, not rich (not sure if this was supposed to be bone broth based?). Didn't try other things on the menu, but there are better ramen options here in the triangle. If your goal is to find a good ramen, try IZA whisky and eats, m pocha (interesting spicy seafood ramen), or dashi instead. read more
