Cozy Korean fried chicken spot on 9th St. I've been here a couple of times now & their food is consistently good. This time, we got the Creamy Onion half chicken with a side of pickled radish. The portion size was perfect for 2 people. The chicken is crispy & juicy, with the onion providing a refreshing contrast. I did think the sauce was a bit too sweet, but it wasn't egregiously so. I also think it's kind of meh that pickles/kimchi are considered paid sides, rather than free accompaniments as seen at most KFC places, but it's fine. Service is fast, ambiance is good. There is parking available nearby. 7.5/10 would recommend!
We got a seafood pancake and 20 wings (half supreme and half soy garlic). Both were delicious and hot. I thought that the seafood pancake could be easily replicated at home with some Korean pancake mix. However, the chicken was special and crunchy! The supreme was a little bit too sweet for my taste, but since we had leftovers, I changed my mind. The day old chicken wings were perfectly crispy and not too sweet. The soy garlic wings were also solid and not too sweet/salty. I'll likely be back to Chicken Bee!

This was our first visit to a Chicken Bee in Durham. I'll preface this with the fact that we were the first and only customers at 11 AM. My wife is Korean so I've been eating Korean food for many years. I decided on my favorite Korean dish, Bulgogi. My wife ordered Bibimbap. When our food arrived I noticed the ginormous amount of onion on the plate. Half of the meal was onion. The bulgogi itself tasted good and was hot. I just never had so much onion on a bulgogi plate...ever. I removed most of the excess onion and left an appropriate amount in the bulgogi. We both love bibimbap and have eaten it for many years. The chicken bee version uses uncooked bean sprouts. We've never had bibimbap with raw bean sprouts. The waitress told us that it is the way Koreans eat bibimbap. Funny...she is Chinese and my wife is Korean. She told us the cook is Mexican. So my wife took most of her food and a boatload of onion home so she could "fix the food". We live 2 hours away from Durham so we'll probably not try that again. Plenty of other Korean restaurants in the area. Again, the food tasted good and the service was good. We were the only ones there so how could it have been any different?
I was very excited to have this near by, there was one person taking orders and handling all tables and yet the service was great! I ordered the spicy garlic and the honey garlic with an order of fries. The fries like the chicken were crunchy and fresh. I think the only downfall for me was that the chicken was so heavily breaded that it took a few bites to get to the chicken itself.
This place has the crispy frying down. I really liked the seafood pajun. It was perfect sharing size for 2. The dipping sauce was just soy sauce. The wait time for the fried chicken is ~25min. The spicy wings were spicy at first but the flavor quickly dissipated. The medium was a good size, I don't think I could've eaten any more.
If you watch a lot of kdramas, you end up craving the foods that they're eating. They tend to show a lot of KFC (Korean fried chicken not Kentucky fried chicken). And I've been craving some KFC anyway since it's been a while so I knew I needed some takeout from Chicken Bee today! Also, it's cold and rainy today so that was also a factor in deciding tonight's dinner. Chicken Bee is my favorite KFC restaurant in Durham! I will say that the chicken isn't as crispy as BonChon's but they are more generous with the sauce. I always order soy garlic wings and sometimes will get the half order of the hot and spicy chicken. I decided to just order both today since I don't have it that often! Leftovers are also a plus for me since I've been too lazy to cook lately. I like to throw them in the toaster oven or air fryer to reheat. The sauces have great flavor and the chicken is juicy and not dry. I also appreciate that the wings are on the bigger side. The hot and spicy is a pretty good spice level for me; it's got good heat and is tolerable. I always get pickled radish as my side. I ordered on doordash for 2 reasons: I didn't feel like driving in the rain and I know parking is very limited there. I do wish they had a better way of packaging the food so it's not as exposed and could be easily tampered with. The middle part of the bag is tied pretty tightly but it's still open because the handles aren't tied together. Also, the box has a small opening that you can see from the top of the bag.

100/10 experience truly amazing that a place like this exists here!! We love Korean food and especially Korean fried chicken but it's difficult to find halal options so we're so happy this place exists. The food was truly phenomenal and left overs heat up perfectly in the air fryer so we had chicken for two days because these portions are huge! The service was super kind and even brought us extra sauces when we wanted to make the fried rice more spicy. All in all excellent menu with lots of variety and great experience, can't wait to be back! read more

We got a seafood pancake and 20 wings (half supreme and half soy garlic). Both were delicious and hot. I thought that the seafood pancake could be easily replicated at home with some Korean pancake mix. However, the chicken was special and crunchy! The supreme was a little bit too sweet for my taste, but since we had leftovers, I changed my mind. The day old chicken wings were perfectly crispy and not too sweet. On my drive back home, decided to stop in to check out their highly raved Chicken... Set in dark, simple wooden motif, the place is small and casual...more of an eatery than a restaurant. However, I can't say that the pricing is cheap. The menu featured some other popular Korean specialties, but as guessed, heavily Chicken. In many ways, it was like BonChon...just as good at least, though maybe slightly less polished? I learned that this is a local one-off, and not a chain like BonChon. I wouldn't be surprised if they branched into more locations in the future. Despite obvious Covid measures, they attempted to cheer up the place with festive X-Mas music overhead and decor. BTW, there was only one friendly cashier-waitress working the restaurant, and she did fine on her own (given that there was only 2 occupied tables during the time I was there). As my Greed ruled me over, I ordered a ton of Chicken (Half and Half...Soy Garlic and Spicy Garlic), along with Kimchi Fried Rice. WAY too much food, but a good Take-Home for my hubby. Undoubtedly, it's DEE-Lish. I mean, how can it NOT be...it's Double Fried w/ tons of flavor! Also, expectedly, it was quite a messy feast. Advice - Don't bother wearing any lipstick when coming here. If you ARE wearing lipstick, take the damn thing off 'cuz it's going to run all over your face by the time you finish a single chicken piece! Guess I'm just not used to wild, sticky hand-helds. Still, I repeat...DEE-Lish!! Kimchi Fried Rice wasn't bad either. Overall, am glad I decided to check them out. Definitely got my K Chicken fix! read more

It's been a year so time for an update! Congratulations to Chicken Bee for being around for a year now! Since then, it has been my go-to place for quality chicken wings. I've had both the Korean fried chicken and regular naked wings -- amazing! Chicken Bee has grown popular and is now in high demand. If you order Friday/Saturday, I wish you all the best because there are so many people ordering. I would suggest ordering ahead and doing a pick-up. It has always worked out for me. The food is consistent and tastes as good, whether you dine in or out. Due to covid, I've been doing take out from here. I appreciate the small details, from the way the food is packaged to the bag. It's done right! Overtime, the customer service has improved tremendously. Shout out to management for that! Overall, this is the place to go to when you're in need of quality chicken wings. read more

Great Korean Fried Chicken - we enjoyed it more than Bon Chon. I got six boneless wings - half spicy and half soy. Spicy definitely has a punch and lingering tingle but doesn't destroy your tastebuds :) Friendly staff and great service too. read more

PROBABLY MY MOST FREQUENTED RESTAURANT IN DURHAM. HITS EVERY TIME AND SOMEHOW CONTINUES TO EXCEED EXPECTATIONS WITH THE TEXTURE AND FLAVOR OF THE CHICKEN. If you're looking for some of the best Korean fried chicken in Durham, you absolutely must try Chicken Bee. This small and unassuming spot may not look like much from the outside, but the food is truly outstanding. The fried chicken is obvs the star of the show here, and for good reason - it's amazing. The chicken is incredibly crispy and perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of spice. But it's not just the chicken that's great here. The side dishes are a fantastic pairing, with plenty of options to choose from. The atmosphere is simple and casual, small but plenty of seating and friendly service. It's the perfect spot for a quick lunch or a casual dinner with friends. Note that the portions are quite generous - I've never left Chicken Bee feeling hungry and always order plates to share. And the prices are very reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the food. A MUST-TRY FOR ANYONE IN DURHAM. read more

Though Chicken Bee is slower and pricier than most spots on Ninth Street, it's a great restaurant that offers some variety. Make sure to visit here when you have extra time on your hands, otherwise you might find yourself in a tight spot. Their food is always great- shatteringly crispy, piping hot, and juicy. I always split the fried chicken into two flavors, though you can't go wrong by just choosing one either. Soy garlic is a classic- I try to alternate between the other two. Just so everyone knows, the chicken reheats wonderfully in a oven or air fryer. Other menu items are also great (and commonly sought after amongst my friends), such as their mozzarella sticks and fries. read more

So we went there to get ramen as my wifey is a self-proclaimed ramen aficionado. Having said that this is not the place for ramen. For starters there is only 3 options, and secondly, it wasn't great. It wasn't bad...but it was nothing special. A little bland despite being fairly spicy. Which brings me to those veggie dumplings! Man they were so good but the spicy garlic are SPICY. Like legit. Ppl who like spicy stuff will like it but those with a sensitive palate will have a bit of a beast on their hands. Delicious either way. My only other complaint would be with the wings. Let me start by saying they were fresh and super-crispy but not burnt in any way. My problem was with the "golden buffalo" sauce. This is not buffalo at all. They should call it "honey mustard bbq" bc that is EXACTLY what it is. Not some intriguing take on your classic buffalo sauce as the name would imply. And when they charge you $2 for a different or extra sauce, it can be kind of disappointing to get a bbq sauce when you wanted buffalo. If you want ramen, go somewhere else. If you want chicken or dumplings this a good spot. read more
On another one of our visits to Chicken Bee, we tried their tteokbokki, soy garlic fried chicken, and naked wings with thai chili sauce. For the price, the tteokbokki was pretty sauce-heavy with relatively few rice cakes. We preferred the soy garlic chicken over the thai chili chicken, as we liked the crunch and flavor of the fried chicken better. For dessert, we ordered the strawberry bingsoo and red bean bingsoo. Both were great -- they were just the right level of sweetness and had a good amount of toppings. Though a bit pricey, as with most of the menu items at Chicken Bee, the two desserts fed our party of 6 well. read more
I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit on their grand opening day! I dined in for some Korean fried chicken. I was a little skeptical and worried at first because of the reviews but I am so happy that I went. Considering it was their grand opening day, I was very impressed with their professionalism and hospitality! Now, the chicken!! Depending on the size of order (half or whole) you get 1 or 2 sides to come with the chicken. We opted in for a bowl of rice (are you surprised) and pickled radish (must have for K.F.C). It took about 20 minutes for us to get the food. It didn't take as long as expected so that was awesome. And the chicken was amazing. They were perfectly fried and the sauce was so sweet and spicy! I wish they had spicier sauces. It did however me of the ones I used to have in Korea. So happy to have them right here in Durham. They are planning to get local beers in soon so it'll make a perfect chi-maek (chicken and maekju aka beer) get together spot! They give you a bottle of water and cups. Popped into Chicken Bee during their soft opening week and yes, they are working on their service and operations. But they are serving up some great eats! Ordered up some soy-garlic wings and some mandu and knew it would take some time. Popped out and grabbed a beer (they do have an ABC license now and are working on it) and came back, perfect timing! Had a plate of crispy mandu dumpling that were dipped in soy-garlic sauce. And my 10 piece wings were great! The soy-garlic marinade is a bit lighter but they do NOT batter their chicken. The skin comes off a bit for some crispiness and the chicken was perfectly fried. Chicken Bee is definitely a bit different from what I've tried elsewhere. It's also served with two sides (rice, daikon, cole slaw, etc) The family running Chicken Bee is working hard and super nice so please bear with them. The food is good and worth the wait overall, I'd recommend coming in off-hours for now. And please ignore the really negative reviews for now given their growing pains. read more
My husband and I came for dinner on night 2 of their soft opening, when they were serving a limited menu. I won't comment on their service, except to note that it was friendly and earnest as they work on getting their bearings. We got a half and half order of their Korean twice-fried chicken wings. Their wings were unlike what I've had elsewhere in Durham (M Kokko, Heavenly Buffaloes) - there's no noticeable breading. Instead, something about the cooking technique makes the skin puff up away from the meat, creating a crispy crunchy chicken skin crackling around the moist and tender meat. Both wing flavors were stickily sweet and savory. The spicy garlic packed a slow burn. I didn't find it too spicy at first bite but then found myself needing extra napkins as I was finishing up my first wing - by wing two, I was sweating a tad, and my nose was starting to run! I was thankful for the cooling bites of pickled radish side dish, even though neither that nor rice could completely stop my lips from tingling and burning. If you like spiciness, definitely get the spicy garlic. If you fear spice, the soy garlic ones are also delicious. We also tried the fried zucchini sticks (fully encased in batter, so on the heavy side) and bulgogi bibimbap. Both were tasty enough but not standout. The wings were the real star, and they're what will bring us back again. The only downside is that the wings are fried to order, and the (regular, not just soft open) menu notes that they'll take 35 minutes. Maybe once they get going and everyone realizes how great the wings are, they'll be able to have them a bit more ready made? If not, they do offer takeout, or you can hangout and watch KPop on their TV while you wait. read more
Highly recommend the onion fried chicken! It's not something you find that often in a small town in the US. The chicken is really crunchy and the onion sauce is addicting. Pro tip: the service is not great but if you order ahead they are pretty good at getting your order out on time. read more

I loved the food here! My frisnds and I camecin for lunch Saturday as a grouo of 4 and ordered the seafood pancake, mozarella sticks, and a half chicken in soy garlic and half sweet and mild with picked radish as the sides. We also got an entree of Tteokbokki with cheese to share. Everything as amazing! The chicken was crispy and full of flavor and the rice cakes were delicious and chewy. The seafood pancake was so full of flavor, best one I've had! The wait was not too long as we went in at 12 when they opened. I will definitely come back to try other entrees! read more
