I've always been a fan of Mellow Mushroom, specifically this location. Plenty of parking since it's in the ATC, lots of seating, and they used to have that fun magician who came around to peoples' tables. Most recently I enjoyed a lovely dinner there before a DPAC show. It wasn't as crowded as I feared it might be, and the server we had was absolutely wonderful. Checking in on yelp got me a free greek salad, which was huge! Two of us split it. The restaurant is also very accommodating to dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free, vegan, etc. I actually ended up ordering the house pizza but leaving off the pork (so no ham, pepperoni, sausage or bacon). Why did I order the house pizza if I didn't want many of the ingredients? Because I did want the ground beef, red sauce, and all the veggies! So delicious, and a better deal than building my own. My dining companion had a build your own burger and she got exactly what she wanted, plus our server kindly brought her even more pickles, since she'd mentioned that she loves pickles. To me The supreme combo at Sam's Club or Costco pizza is just as good for less than half the price. My boyfriend disagrees though because he can't taste the difference and think it's worth it to try a more expensive pizza from time to time. When you check and you do get a free salad which is nice and also a pretzel for your birthday. The pretzel was mediocre I didn't really like that dough. A huge restaurant with tasty options for a vegetarian! I sat down at a table near the bar and had attentive service. I tried the mushroom soup and it's very creamy and cheesy, if you like that sort of thing. I got the vegetarian tofu hoagie on a white bread which was very tasty. The bread was super soft. If you want a heartier sandwich, I'd go with the wheat bread. You can get a half or a whole size and a half is a nice light bite option. The pick up time was very quick and efficient. As soon as I got home I realized that my pizza was missing the dried tomatoes and the pesto. I called them to let them know that was missing. They insisted they make me a new pizza! I thought that was very sweet of them to do. For the ability to meet the needs of a local, Mellow Mushroom is doing it right. This local chain gives off a hippie theme, with their mushroom sculptures and relaxed vibe. They've recently added on additional outdoor, patio seating, which makes for a great option pre-Bulls games. Come in on a Monday or Tuesday night, when select pints are $3.50 and order a salad and small pizza between you and your date. The Greek salad (hold the mushrooms) is a great option and I personally prefer their more basic pizzas. I find the fancier the pizza here, the more "off" the flavors are; for example, the chicken BBQ is really to sweet. They cook their pizzas perfectly here, so simple can be delightful. Overall, Mellow Mushroom makes for a good backup option when you're looking for get out of the house, get a good meal and a solid pizza/salad for a decent price. P.S. I love this chain. All the restaurants are a little different but a fun atmosphere. This is the first place my son took us to eat when we came for a visit. Loved the floating Shroom. The service was great and fast. I have had Cal zones and Pizza's here. My Gran-daughter even likes it here , she got allot of attention from the staff. She is only 9 months old. Whenever I go to a Durham Bulls game I pass by here and the pizza smell is fantastic. I always say, next time lets just eat here and skip the ballpark food! I've yet to do that! Once the season ended we made our way over there and ended up getting seated near the door that leads to the outdoor area. I do NOT recommend this! Every time the servers went in & out, which is quite often, the door slams very loudly and hard. I was getting a headache very quickly. I was looking forward to one of those fantastic smelling pizzas and sadly the waitress misunderstood my order and it came out wrong. To her credit she tried to make good when I confessed what was lacking and it sounded like she was going to bring me another pizza. Instead she brought the missing ingredients in a cup for me to add onto the pizza. It just didn't work out too well. Ten whole dollars. So i ordered a medium with extra meat and someone i was with ordered a small. This is where i was extremely let down. We got the pizzas. His pizza was all the way to the crust. You could take his small pie, place it on top of mine, and cover where the all the toppings on mine were. So disappointing. And extra chicken means average of 4 pieces of chicken per slice. For an extra 2.05. I thought they maybe forgot. I asked the server why there was a 2 inch crust on my pizza while my friend had it all the way to the crust. He responded by offering to remake it, but we were on a time crunch to make an event so i just ate it. You would think they would change some kind of charge. But nope. I didnt want to make a big stink about it. You win some, you lose some. They lost me and anyone else who i tell about this if im asked about it. I get that it was busy, but to put this quality of food out and charge an extra $12+ is absurd when i could have just ordered a small. So i left unsatisfied and not full. I have yet to be disappointed by a Mellow Mushroom restaraunt. I have been to the Asheville NC location once, Jacksonville FL once, and this location twice. My only tiny complaint is the pretzel bite appetizer wasn't quite as good as the last time I was here. The rest of the food, as well as our waitress performance, were both on point. I unfortunately don't remember her name but she was super polite and exceptionally efficient with keeping our drinks full. The pizza was a standard large pepperoni and was wonderful. Slightly spicy sauce, fresh cheese, and that unique pretzel-esque crust that you just can't beat. I don't drive up to the Raleigh or Durham areas very often, but I always try to stop here if I can. read more

This is a pizza chain. Never been a huge fan of the pizza from Mellow Mushroom. Independent pizza is almost always better. My office would do catering from here. That's when the office vultures come out from their cubicles smelling the scent of the dough, searching for free food, planning their attack and boom, a mere few minutes later all slices are gone and all that is left is a dirty opened up box with a sad slice of onion hanging on one side of the box and half a black olive stuck to the top of the lid. You know how to paint the picture Matt G, you used to be one of those office pizza vultures. Well, You snooze you lose. While I never say no to pizza, there is better out there. The base isn't great. This was a nice find right across from the Bulls stadium. The decor is pretty psychedelic and fun to look at. Between that and the pizza smells, my husband and I were drawn in. We got free pretzel bites for checking in. They're not quite pretzels since they lack the signature brown skin. The inside texture seemed right though. They were covered in Parmesan and served with cheese and marinara sauce. They were pretty good and we kept the dipping sauces for the pizza crust later (thanks to our server for suggesting it!). The Pacific Rim pizza was AMAZING. The combo of Canadian bacon, pineapple, lovely smoked bacon, and jalapeños was just so good together! The bottom was thin, making it feel like a fork and knife kind of pizza. The crust was chewy, lightly dusted with Parmesan, and not dry or boring like some other pizzas I've had. We stopped in here for lunch and we're not disappointed. We were quickly seated and the service was good. My son and his best friend can be demanding as they are preschoolers, the waitress was pleasant and patient. We sat on the enclosed patio which was quieter than inside. The fan helped to cool the area. The food was delivered pretty quickly and was tasty. My son split the gluten free pizza with his friend and ate three slices. It's pretty much all been said; Mellow Mushroom is a chain, it's a family friendly restaurant. For the Durham location, it's one of the many choices to visit before a Bulls Game. The pizza is fresh and crust is uniquely Mellow Mushroom, plus there are options other than pizza. The oven roasted chicken wings are great, and the salads are fantastic! You could certainly split a large salad if you're eating light or also enjoying pizza, or eat it as your meal alone. Dressings are house made and Esperanza is my favorite! Some decent drink options and full bar; semi-outdoor seating for nice days. The variable here is the service. Sometimes its great; other times its completely disastrous. For me, that's enough to make me choose another establishment when I have a working lunch. I do think this restaurant is appropriate to the area and will do well no matter the variable in service. read more

I didn't know this establishment was actually a chain. It's quite dim for my liking. The family across from our table was using their flashlight on their phones to read the menu! But I really like their pizza dough. You can taste the freshness of their crust. However, the pricing for the pizza is quite odd. The small ranges from 10-12 dollars and the medium pizzas DOUBLE in price. It's not even an exaggeration. It would be understandable if the size was significantly larger... but it's not-- It's 10" to 14" I would personally order 2 smalls instead of a single medium pizza for the same price. I also recommend the buffalo chicken. That was delicious. The other pizza we ordered was the prime rib pizza, which was just okay.
