I used to like this place about 6 years ago, but I feel like the food here isn't as good anymore. Maybe it's because I've discovered other good sandwich/breakfast places that have more varieties and that have better quality food. The egg, cheese, and turkey sausage biscuit I got was great and they have such a diverse menu! Unfortunately the chef forgot our order so we waited for way too long. I am a Nosh regular, and not just because of the food. The service here is great - the people are always friendly and work very fast and hard. They really make Nosh a special place. The food is great (though I wish the prices were a little lower). I'm a particular fan of the classic breakfast items (including the Duke Slammer). 7AM or 2PM breakfast, Excellent! I heart the cheesy grits, sausage gravy biscuit, and the blueberry flapjacks! Daily lunch and dinner specials rotate a variety of favorites for me, especially the veggie pot pie, lamb stew, asparagus soup, and zucchini parm soup! I have not had a single non-delectable dish at Nosh. I have not had a single bad service day at Nosh, either dine in or take out! The staff are outgoing, efficient, personable, and I and my fellow party members have never waited over 10 minutes for our food, including burgers cooked to order. The salads are full of local veggies, fresh as can be; the sandwiches have good portions of meat and greens where appropriate, no skimping! The Rocket coffee is brewed poifectly! Baked goods are well loved by cohorts on the run at work, especially the banana chocolate muffins and brownies! When I need to meet someone locally for an informal meal and discuss our work, or meet friends as a large group, or go single, I pick Nosh. Hands down! Brought a large group in here last month and they were top notch! After we called ahead they reserved a space for us to all sit together. At first I thought the menu might be limited, but everyone found something and enjoyed why the ordered. Having the board games in house provided something to do while we waited. Nosh is one of my favorite places for lunch in Durham and my absolute favorite sandwich place. The food is amazing, always fresh and yummy, even when they provide boxed lunches for catering. The specials are always good and add some variety to the already awesome menu selection. The are two other things about nosh that are tied for the best part - the pastries and the staff. This review pertains only to the Nosh located in Duke Medical School. They grill outside on Fridays. The line is QUITE long, but the smell lures you in: be prepared to spend at least a half hour of your lunch break on line. I recommend bringing a friend that you love to talk to, to pass the time. Otherwise, the food is worth the wait. Tasty angus burgers, great barbecue, wonderful portobellos. The toppings are amazing: bacon ketchup, pesto mayo, and blueberry mustard -- WOW! This place does a really good job of offering a variety of options that are all tasty. I've been here for lunch and breakfast, and have been satisfied every time. It has a cozy atmosphere with boardgames and booths. The coffee is decent but not incredible. There is always a nice little offering of yummy baked goods. But what really blew my mind on our last visit here was the biscuits and gravy special. First off, their biscuit is downright incredible. The employee taking our order mentioned being really proud of their biscuits, and I can really understand why. It may be the best biscuit I've ever had, even considering the biscuits from Loveless in Nashville. The Nosh biscuits are super flavorful and have just the perfect amount of crop on the edge when you bite in. It is simply everything you could want in terms of flavor in a buttery biscuit. I'm sure it's not healthy for you. The sausage gravy was full of flavorful sausage, and it was served piping hot. It was probably my favorite experience with biscuits and gravy, and I've had quite a few. Their salads are great, egg dishes are fulfilling, and I'm dying to try what look like yummy pizzas the next time I go. read more

I've tried Nosh twice and I wasn't impressed. The first time I had the P.W.'s pepperoni pizza. It was cold and the sauce wad too sweet. The crust was really thin tasteless and burnt on the bottom. I'd rather buy a Tombstone from the grocery store. The next time I tried the Paula Rocks wrap hoping it would be better than the pizza. It wasn't. The wrap had no taste. NONE! The kettle chips also didn't have any flavor. The bottom line is the food left me disappointed but the sweets were really good. The fudge brownie almost explodes with flavor in your mouth. It is a little pricey but as an occasional treat it's worth it. read more

Really terribly disappointing. If it weren't for the location, I think this would go out of business. Because I work nearby, I've worked my way through the menu. The best I can say is that the ham and cheese sandwich is decent, but that is damning with faint praise. I went with a group for Sunday breakfast at around 10 am. The place was packed, and since prices were reasonable, most were Duke students. Took quite a while to order, possibly 30 minutes but food came quickly. By the time I sat down, the place was buzzing louder than most clubs I have been to. With nothing to absorb sound, I could not hear the person next to me or across from me. That is no pleasurable experience. The other problem is that like most cheap places, they think salt is a main course. I don't go back to places where the cooks are under 20 and ten minutes after leaving, I am frantic for gallons of water. Not a good sign. read more

I came here for lunch with friends and we all enjoyed our meals. Food is ordered at the counter and brought out to your table. It was a beautiful day outside so we sat on the patio. There was more than sufficient seating for the whole establishment. I ordered the crunchy chicken sandwich. The chicken breast was butteflied, deliciously seasoned, and pan fried. It was not greasy or breaded. The meat itself was still moist and well cooked. On top of the sandwich, the Dijon mustard sauce and vegetable slaw adds a nice sweet/tangy/crunchy flavor. It's all served on a pretty standard bun. My side was potato salad - average but had a nice curry flavor without tons of mayo. The rest of my company ordered salads -- they come in a large bowl and everyone seemed happy with their food. I sampled a smoothie (I think it was called the black and blue? It had yogurt and cranberry juice) and I had some food envy. As I was dining I thought it would be a nice place to take my parents for lunch after showing them the duke campus. read more

Perfect fast late lunch near Duke University. I had a very good egg salad sandwich, my wife went for the roast turkey sandwich. Both were served on a very nice whole grain bread. We both liked the couscous served on the side instead of chips. A hot coffee and an iced filled out the meal. Not very adventurous but it filled the bill if you're down that way. Great Food! My family likes to eat out on Tuesday nights and this was our night out. We are a large group (15 that night), the food was great and the atmosphere friendly. We had a good sampling of a lot of food due to many different taste. My niece is a very picky eater due to a medical condition and she even found something to eat! The soup and grilled cheese sandwich was a hit, the soup that night was smoked ghouda she ordered two bowls. It is just nice to find a family friendly restaurant where you find a good value for your dollar. We will be back! read more

My wife and I stumbled on this place while looking for a coffee shop that had apparently closed. We came during lunch, and I wasn't expecting much but was very surprised. I've been in many places that looked exactly like this and the food was always over priced and boring. Although I've seen much better menus the food that we did get was ALL very good. The chips are house made and the sandwiches had lots of flavor. the curried potatoes and curried couscous as side items were great. I'm not sure I've ever had anything here that I was displeased with. Their salads are great (I get the Rocket salad most often). Their brunch is fantastic. Their soups (especially any kind of chili) and daily specials are often awesome. Even the sides (like the curried cous cous) are really good. At one point, they did $1 drinks for Duke employees. When the weather allows, sit outside! Tasty! Came here for brunch with my girlfriends. Very chill environment and very good food. The grits were amazing!!! The cinnamon raisin bagel was good too. There's an odd shape to the whole place and too many big tables. When a bunch of couples and trios are in they have to share tables- awkward. Go before noon or after 2 to avoid crowds. read more

Nosh is my favorite place to eat near Duke medical campus on Erwin Rd. since I started to work there in 2010. I really enjoy their burgers, Reuben and wraps. I am glad they opened a 2nd branch on the medical campus ( Medical library). The new location has a more limited menu option but excellent soups and the same good quality. So when my mother came to durham for a visit I decided to take her to the restaurant on Erwin for breakfast. We both got Rocket's breakfast (2 scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuit & taters) ok the eggs & sausage were good but the taters were horrible!!! They were yellow & tasted like they had curry or saffron seasoning on them??? Idk but they were not what I was expecting at all... Ugh!!! I should have just got a sausage egg & cheese biscuit!!
