The food is average. Some days really good. Other days just meh. I've had a few burgers overcooked and sweet potato fries raw and not cooked. It's a hassle to return anything because hey, I'm on a lunch break and don't have all day. If you get a table where you can watch what goes on behind the counter, that's where the true nature of this place comes thru. The owner is a woman and uh, let's say she appears to need medication. I chat with the service staff from time to time and they have some great stories about how manic she is. Like, she makes everyone bring in their own cup if they want anything to drink. WTF!!! It's actually in the employee handbook. Oh, and if you speak any language other than English at work, you get fired. Oh, and she goes through staff like water. Can we say wack-a-doodle? I kinda started phasing Nosh out because it really does matter how you treat your employees. Most Duke people are so privileged they simply don't get that. Oh well. read more

I am definitely a fan of Nosh. When dining in, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I love the supply of board games - they come in handy if they're busy and you have to wait a bit for your order. As for the food, I have not had a disappointing meal yet. Primarily, Nosh is my local go-to for catering. I live next door and eat here a lot. It is a little hidden gem in the first floor of an office building. It gets a little crowded on weekend mornings but is worth the wait. They have great breakfast, sandwiches and smoothies. I love the crispy chicken. read more

I couldn't contact Nosh by email to let them know that, this past weekend, at the Coalition to Unchain Dogs concert in Durham they wrote "Veggie Dogs" on the menu board, but served 100% beef hot dogs. I am a vegetarian I know the difference. This was definitely meat. This was the only hot dog choice on the menu, and they insisted when asked, that these were veggie dogs. They said they had gotten at Whole Foods. While I just handed it to my husband to eat, I think that many, many people would have been very upset about this. It was pretty funny in a way that they wouldn't know te difference. On the other hand, they probably lost business since not a lot of people eat veggie dogs and that was all they served. read more

Nosh is a great place for breakfast or lunch (probably dinner too, but I haven't made it there in the evening yet). I love breakfast in general, and their breakfast is really pretty amazing. I usually get either Shoaf's Toast or the Breakfast Pizza, and both are hits in my book. Shoaf's Toast is french toast-banana-peanut buttery goodness (though if you don't have a huge sweet tooth, you might want to stay away, with syrup and honey, this dish is incredibly sweet--I usually have to get the syrup on the side) and the Breakfast Pizza is a great combination of eggs, cheese, bread, and bacon...and it's huge! Lunchtime is also wonderful with many good sandwich options, some burgers, and some more pizzas. It can be nice to embrace your inner child while you wait for your meal by playing one of the board games in the dining area. The staff there has always been very friendly. The only reason they don't get that final star from me is that I wish they had a few more options of sides and some of the sandwich offerings could have a little more pizazz. read more

I work across the street at Duke so I would love for Nosh to be my standby lunch joint, but it doesn't cut it. It's very hit or miss, some things are well prepared and tasty, others pretty bland. Overall the prices are high for the amount of food you get. Last time service was very slow and confused. The coffee is usually good but quite overpriced. My sister got the breakfast pizza, which was also huge, but she loved it as well. She also got a chai latte, which she also enjoyed. My mom got a burger and loved it. When you tell the cashier taking your order that you're allergic to red pepper, and she recommends a side of potato chips that comes out covered in spice mix that is bright red from the red pepper in it, that is negligent. Don't eat here if you have food allergies. read more

Have eaten here several times, and yes, the decor is nice and the dishes are usually tasty, enough perhaps to offset the pricey and modest portions. But the food service execution is barely adequate and not improving. Too many times one's plate arrives in this small eatery having obviously sat under a heat lamp (fruit included) or after absurdly long and avoidable waits. The service was efficient, the server was friendly and helpful... I was there right around lunch time this place was crowded but nothing I'm not use too when the food is great!! Nosh has been on "Man vs. Food" and isn't really a "secret" from what I can tell, but it's a very nice casual eatery that is the definition of "elevated" casual dining. I had the special which was the fried green tomato sandwich, and while it wasn't earth-shattering, it was unusual, well-made, and delicious. I also had the Brunswick Stew which was quite hearty. The gentleman at the cash register was friendly, but very slow and not very helpful: when I asked him about the stew (a daily special), he hesitated before describing it as "a soup with meat." I had to then ask him to specify what KIND of meat (beef). My companion had the potato curry soup which she said was very good. The decor is kind of funky though not terribly consistent (lots of Duke sport stuff and modified "junk" like benches made from old skis), and there are some games like Jenga and other available to play while you wait for your food, which is a nice touch. I wasn't in the mood for the desert, a peanut butter pie which looked delicious. Also, the price range here can vary - if you get a sandwich and soup it's probably $$ and not $. read more

What a nice treat after long day at Duke Hospital. I called ahead from hospital and picked up on way home. I got the hamburger and turkey burgers for my family. I've been here a few times, and the service hasn't been too friendly. My last order from Nosh was a call in order. I ordered my food and went to pick up in 10 mins (as the person on the phone instructed me to do). I saw my order waiting for me in the takeout container, but the employee who would seem to be responsible for taking my payment never addressed me. He was on the phone for a few minutes, and I patiently waited (right in front of him) until he finished his telephone conversation. He then walked away without acknowledging me at all! The other employees also acted as if they did not see me as well. However, another customer walked in the door, and they helped her right away. Nosh is the superlative of eclectic and approachable food. My all time favorite to grab and go is their maple-nut granola. If a sandwich is in order I must have their burgers. The flavor profile takes me back to an old-fashioned soda fountain counter from my childhood. I normally avoid buns, but not at Nosh. It is brioche heavenliness. If you are meeting a friend, mother-in-law, or dining solo Nosh will offer whatever anyone is craving. I came here on a Sunday hoping for a tasty brunch. Great day outside and there was plenty of outside seating which was a plus. The line wasn't too long but it took an inordinate amount of time to get our orders taken when only 7 or 8 people were in front of us (it's cafe style). The food came out quick enough, although it wasn't really busy at the moment. However, the most important part, the food, left a lot to be desired. I got the special "Devil's Scramble". It was comprised of tater tots, scrambled eggs, peppers, sausage bits. You'd have to imagine it'd be hard to do badly with a dish such as this. However, the tater tots were overcooked, leaving the appropriate level of crunchiness amiss. Also, the grease of the dish was excessive, visibly pooled on the bottom of the plate. Overall, the food was disappointing considering how simple the dish is to cook. This was a second visit and left me leaving underwhelmed for a second straight time. I read online that if you want a really good breakfast, make your way to Nosh.... Don't believe everything you read online! My wife and I ordered breakfast with eggs, bacon, taters, and a biscuit with "butter" and jelly. The margarine was okay and the jelly was pretty good. Everything else...not so much. My scrambled eggs came out with some strange texture going on, unlike any eggs I have ever had, and the taste was even stranger. I can't put my finger on the flavor, other than to say "not good." My wife ordered her eggs fried, and while they were well prepared, she stated that her's had an unusual taste as well. The biscuits were huge, but quite old and stale. The bacon, while visually attractive, was just okay to taste. The real caper of the meal was the "taters." When our plates were brought out, we both looked at each other with a quizzical look and sorta leaned over our plates, sniffing. The taters were apparently fried with or topped with what smelled, and unfortunately tasted, to be curry powder. Sometimes I cook with curry powder, so it is not unknown to me, but for the life of me I can't think of a single reason to cook potatoes with curry powder for a breakfast meal. Every bite was a different look of surprise on our faces, trying to ponder the thinking behind those taters. Nearly an entire bottle of ketchup later, and with enough salt to make a dead man have high blood pressure, we finally finished our cold curried potatoes and my clay-like scrambled eggs. As I stated, the margarine and jelly were not bad and my wife stated that her Coke was very good. Other than that I can't recommend Nosh for their breakfast. Their other items may be wonderful, but as for us, we will not risk it next time! read more
