It took some time to get my food. I ordered a fish dinner with fries and grits. The fries and fish were served hot but the grits were not hot and were just warm as if they had been sitting for a while. Overall the food was good. read more

This was our second visit. The staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. I had the croissant breakfast sandwich, and the hub had the shrimp and grits. Unfortunately, there was an inspection at the time we visited, which slowed down the service and payment. That didn't deter us, though. We will be back. read more

This was my first time visiting Nzinga's and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was even more exciting that on Thursdays the shrimp and grits are half off. I ordered takeout and I felt that it was prepared in a sufficient amount of time (about a 10 min wait). The food was hot, well seasoned, and good. The menu had so many items that looked good and I definitely have to come back to visit. The staff was very nice and kind. The restaurant is very clean. Walked in about 9am on a Saturday and early 2000's Music was pumping !! Normally I wouldn't like this but something about hearing Nelly made it okay with me. Overall, Food was good. Bottom of the French toast Bread was hard. Both my sister and I experienced the toughness of the bread. 3 sandwiches came up to be 32.00. Service was prompt. My partner and I were visiting from out of town, were looking for a Black owned breakfast spot, and came across Nzinga's. When I say we were blown away, it's not an understatement. As soon as you walk in, the space is lively with music and plenty of people picking up and ordering food. One of the co-owners, Freddy, helped us with recommendations and he did not disappoint. We ordered the French toast combo and a Belgian waffle combo + candied yams, home style potatoes, and cabbage (they were sadly out of Mac n cheese at the time). To keep it short, every single thing was a HIT. Please make sure you order the cabbage, it's not your aunties cabbage, made in the style of Zimbabwe cooking. You won't be disappointed! Candied yams and salmon cake were on point and the even though he doesn't like French toast said this is the only French toast he would ever come back for. This is not my first time eating Nzinga's. The wings are decent and the chicken tenders are okay. I just ordered the pancake combo and they were burnt and inedible. The food here fails to provide a wow factor. They have a two for 6.99 breakfast sandwich deal, which can include a coffee for an extra dollar. However, almost every time I've ordered the coffee, it was never delivered and I had to get money back. It's to the point, where I just stopped ordering the coffee. I do keep in mind that I have only received food through delivery, but the service and food quality should not differ simply because I don't eat in person. This is by far one of the best restaurants I have eaten at in a while, and I have traveled to states over the past few months. I ordered the fish and grits and yams. The fish was fried to perfection which reminded me of New Orleans and the grits were cooked to perfection. They offer cajun and cheese grits. I tried both, and they were both delicious. It was a hard pick but I went with the cajun only because it had onions in it which added to the flavor and texture. The service was great and ambiance was simple. I went here on an early Saturday and have not stopped thinking about it. I got the fried fish and Cajun grits and it may have been the best fried fish I have ever had. Crispy outside but hot and steamy inside. Their grits were savory with good Cajun spicing. The strawberry lemonade was so good, we bought extras. Every person walking through the door got some sort of "How's your momma? How's your brother?" from the cook. The restaurant has a mom and pop's old school feel, but it's very clean. My food was made fresh. The shrimp and grits were a little too salty and spicy for me. I got them half off for a special but likely won't get them again. The quesadilla was great! I requested extra ranch on the side and it tasted like a chipotle ranch which I really enjoyed. The fish was whiting and it was good until I started eating scales which kind of ruined it for me. Overall not a bad spot. Not sure if I'd return but I do recommend trying if you haven't. read more

Returned today, 11/16, from Maryland to visit my daughter, and of course I had to introduce her to my favorite spot to eat. The food is okay, but poor service and kitchen staff. The two times I've been there the food (one complete meal) was never served at the same time. I may have ordered eggs with bacon and potatoes. They'd serve the eggs and bacon, but by the time the potatoes came I'd finished the eggs and bacon. The other time I was with a group of maybe 16 people. Again, complete meals not served at the same time and it took some time for the food to come to the table. read more

Walked in on a Thursday morning, Thursday's they have a half off special for shrimp and grits, you can get it Cajun and cheesy for no extra cost. I'm a big back so I also got the breakfast special with scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and toast. Lemonades and teas are homemade, I got the strawberry lemonade, it was fire. Only 2 people working midweek so you can order online or order at the kiosk inside. Only about a 15 min wait, pretty good considering the customer flow and just 2 ladies working. Had the shrimp po' boy with fries. You can alternatively get it with coleslaw or other sides. I bought a po' boy in New Orleans recently that was not as good as this one. Really flavorful and generous. The bread was a dense crumb that didn't fall apart, the shrimp was tender with a crisp outside, the tomatoes were juicy and the sauce was just a little bit spicy. There are other sauce options for the wings and the combo comes with two sides. I do wish there were more vegetarian menu options, especially for the sides. Let me tell you this food is so good. It's like eating at your grandma's house when you were younger on a sunday morning. I ate every INCH of that food, I even had to tell the girl at the register that the food was amazing. The restaurant was very clean and I love how spaced out the tables are. No matter where you sit you are not too close to your neighbor. All the food comes in takeout trays which I like because it's an easy cleanup and I don't have to ask for a box! It's a brunch place and soul food place, me and my partner got brunch. We both got the breakfast combo with french toast, beef bacon (I got turkey sausage), and fries. You can pick the side we just happen to be in the mood for some fries! We didn't even talk while eating, honestly 10 out of 10 spot and we will definitely come back. Nzinga's Kitchen was a great spot for authentic Creole / Southern food, tucked away in the historic Hayti region of Durham. I ordered the Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich Combo with french fries. A lot of times when a dish has a "sweet + spicy" type sauce it's really just one or the other, but I thought this sauce was perfect with both spice and honey flavors coming through. The chicken was crispy and cooked well too. It's a bit of a hidden gem in a strip mall that's easy to miss, so I'm glad to have this on my map and will definitely be coming back to try the brunch or the Wednesday wings deal. read more

It was literally seasoned to perfection. My fish had a perfect crunch to it-so yummy. The grits were a perfect consistency-not too runny and not too thick. Perfect consistency. Also this was a to go order and it was ready when I got there. I actually got a notification it was ready when I was a few minutes away-impressive. I haven't been to Nzinga's in about 6-7 years and the food is still amazingly delicious. You can order at counter, online, or via screen inside door. I got the cajun shrimp and grits and despite some photos online that made it seem like a pool of grease, MY personal experience was contrary to that. The flavor was consistent and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. I only didn't like random onions and tomatoes garnish as I am super sensitive, not allergic, to onions. The customer service was good and the food was ready quickly. I got some of their famous banana pudding but I have to say that it was just okay. If you like straight pudding mix and vanilla wafers then you may love it. I prefer actual bananas and banana flavor. Overall great food and will definitely come get takeout more often. read more

Food was delicious and portions were large. Oh, and the strawberry lemonade is still amazing. They are still doing to-go only, and they don't have the full compliment of Cajun food they've had in the past, but just keep an eye on this place. I have my favorite soul food places in Durham. Never tried Nzingas til this morning. Got the Cajun grits, yams, collards, whiting. It was all seasoned perfectly. Grits were FIRE. They forgot my Mac and cheese and i was so excited about trying :( but still 5 stars. They were so friendly inside also so great customer service. But tbh one of the HUGE things that set Nzinga apart from Let's Eat, V's, Vittles, etc is that they open at 9 and serve breakfast AND lunch items. Nzinga I came on on a Wednesday for brunch at around 10:30am. Because it's in a shopping center, there was plenty of parking. It was pretty empty inside and I ordered the Griddle combo (Red velvet waffle, bacon and 2 eggs sunny side up). The food came out in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately the eggs completely undercooked- the egg white was still mostly raw. I was so thrown off that I forgot to take a picture of the food. The Red Velvet Waffles has the texture of cake and overall was delicious. The cost came to around $12. I gave it a 3 star because of the overall quality of the food and the cost. read more
